Yorkshire Terrier Pros And Cons (SHOCKING)

  • This video is about Yorkshire Terrier Pro's And Cons, the good and the bad.
Even though you will see a dainty dog with a floor-length glossy coat when you come across a Yorkshire Terrier, the heart of this breed still beats with the feistiness of its ancestors.
Yorkies once earned their keep by taking care of the rats that were in the mills and mines of England before they found their way into the laps of Victorian ladies.
This compact, toy-sized pup weighs no more than seven pounds as an adult, featuring a coat that is steel-blue and facial tones that are a golden tan.
Their size can make some people think that these dogs are pushovers, but anyone with some experience working with Yorkies will tell you otherwise.
They are a brave breed, often bossy, and the Yorkshire Terrier exhibits a big attitude that stays wrapped up in a slightly egotistical small package. It is one of the best options to consider as a pet if you live in the city because they adapt well to homes of any size.
Another reason to consider the Yorkshire Terrier is the fact that they are more hypoallergenic than other breeds. Their human-like hair allows the coat to manage its dander more effectively, which means there are fewer contact issues to worry about with Yorkies.
Here are some additional Yorkshire Terrier pros and cons to review as well if you are thinking about bringing a pup home to add to your family.

I had a Yorkie named Teddy
    He was fearless
Unfortunately he died at the age of 3 and a 1/2
My girlfriend found him dead in the yard
I can only speculate how he died
    My heart was broken
I think of him every day
I’d love to get another one but I’m 64 and fighting cancer
I don’t know how much time I’ve got left but I pray to God I’ll see him on the other side when I pass
Every time I see one I want to go talk to the people and ask if I can pick him or her up and hug them to remind myself of my Teddy

I am the owner of a grooming salon, and had been grooming a little Yorkie girl for almost four years. Her mommy moved from out of state when she married. Unfortunately, she passed away in January (from covid, she was a nurse at a senior living facility). Her husband had never had a small dog in the house and had some health issues. He contacted me and asked if I would take her. That is how I became Phoebe's mommy. When he brought her over, he explained that she had little to no training, and had ruined the carpet in his home. My first thought was, "now you tell me!". I have been training and showing dogs since I was a teenager (back in the stone age,LOL). Phoebe will be 5 years old next month, so I figured it would take alot of time and patience. I quickly found that she was extremely intelligent! I've had many people tell me that Yorkies were a difficult breed to train, and I knew that terriers are most always a stubborn breed. I just wasn't expecting things to progress quickly. Phoebe absolutely blew me away, and took away my previous veiw on Yorkies! She learned every command in record time, and I usually only had to repeat each phrase around four or five times! Within two weeks she was completely house trained, and knew sit, stay, wait, leave it, and to come to heel, and keep in step the way that I taught my toy poodles and Chihuahuas for show. I have since trained her to be a service dog when I noticed that she was alerting me before my physical health issues could become a full blown episode. She never leaves my side, and accompanies me every where. I do get some strange reactions when I explain to people that, yes, despite her weighing only six pounds, and that I keep her in full coat, she is indeed a trained service dog. I guess I said all that, to make the point that you don't have to believe a preconceived notion about this breed. I've only ever had two other dogs in my adult life that were more intelligent, one was a Doberman, and the other a miniature Poodle. Dogs of any breed are all individuals, and some are more attentive and easily trained. Phoebe has been a blessing to me, and I am so glad that I took a chance on her. If you are thinking of getting a Yorkie, consider an older rescue dog. Adult or puppy, remember this is a terrier, and you have to be diligent in training, with repetition and reward. I am certain that there are many people who are Yorkie parents, that agree that this breed is not only beautiful and adorable, but are capable of so much more than sitting in laps! Share your experience with your Yorkie kids, and let people know just how intelligent these little furkids are, if you spend the time to work with them.

@@eibteeda3317 I am definitely getting another Yorkie, because my dog, named Anthony died at the end of December at age 13. I have owned two Yorkies in my life that had trained me instead of me training them. Now, I am working at home and have the time to train my next Yorkie. The person who wrote the the comment above obviously had the knowledge and time to train Phoebe. The video wasn't accurate on all points because I adopted a German Shepherd, I named Albert, and later took in a Yorkie named Eddie, and we all were one happy family. However, Eddie ran the whole house. Eddie was originally taken in by someone who rescued him, but had to find another home because her Yorkie was jealous and biting him.

Phoebe was lucky to find a new person who understood her. I have a theory she was stressed by losing her first Mom and for that reason less stubborn and more prone to pleasing her new parent. Dogs are used as service dogs for a variety of maladies because their keen senses pick up on potential dangers their humans are totally unaware of. The people who give you strange looks can just google service animals to learn some new people tricks. May God continue to bless you and Phoebe.

My Yorkie is 2 years old and he is the best dog in the whole world. Loving and affectionate to everyone, human or four-legged, energetic, super intelligent, curious and always ready for a new adventure. He is stubborn and can yap, doesn't like being alone but will behave himself and hates grooming (unfortunately for him since grooming is absolutely necessary for a Yorkie). I fell in love with Yorkies years before I ever got my puppy. Now that I have him, I couldn't imagine a better breed of dog.

Pot training went fast with my Yorkie :) i think in 1 week he already knew where to do it :) the shedding is non existent, no hair loss unless he was not brushed for a long time and u pull tangled hairs. It is not a noisy dog, it copies the owners, if they are agitated the dog is the same as them. My dog is quiet all day, we are a chill couple so he never barks unless we play or he plays by himself. Barks at doorbell sometimes and at the food delivery guy or if he hears neighbors walking around in the flat. They can be easily trained to take orders such as "sit" " lay down" "shake (give paw/handshake)" but they are a bit hard headed so they will not always listen and execute , but after 2-3 tries they will eventually do it. Always curious always participating in everything and always making sure the whole family is safe. At night when we go to bed he lays down at the end of the bed facing the door (Guard dog Mode Activated). And he is the most forgiving and loving thing in the world. Also he wants a lot of play time. This breed is very active, but can be lazy if not given enough attention and playtime.

He's also super confident thinking he's the biggest dog ever, he goes after everything (except other dogs, he's really good abt that and usually just ignores them entirely) he thinks he's the king and is very entitled, usually sleeps all day or lays around till I have to do something then he demands I pet him, he's very smart and picks up on context clues very well, but maybe to well because I have to be very careful about what I say when I say it, because if I say something like "whats your favorite color" to my mom before walking him he'll assume that means he's going for a walk whenever I say that again. He can be trained pretty well, he understands stop and no, and sit and stay, and if when he's laying by me and I have to get up ill just tell him and he'll move

She's great with kids, loves the outdoors (but only on her terms), and loves to play all day. I do know that she's a lot more happier when we live with family even though we aren't. She enjoys having alot of people in the house because she knows she's never alone, especially with two retirees around.

We had two yorkshire terriers (they were very gentle, no problems) before, when last one died, I was heartbroken and said to my 4 grown daughters, no more pets. They bought as a surprise a yorkshire, who came from Spain. His parents were 1,5 dad and mum 1,7, he is now 4kilos (castrated, and watch his diet) He is though aggressive with food, and at other times. So much training, pet psychologist! Bit my 3 year old granddaughters (for gently patting his head, while he was lying at our feet awake), my 9 year old grandson, (for running a meter away from him) me masses of times, (mainly food related, if I drop something and try to pick up) Very stressful. He is adorable, in other ways, follows me around, he is rarely left alone, has so munch more than my other two boys had, as I have more time, and not working. Having to resort to a mouth guard when children here. So strange, as he is so intelligent, loves seeing them, knows all their names, but can't be trusted.

Thanks for the video. Our Yorkie is named Cooper and he is 8 years old. He is so handsome and we love his “I am a big dog” airs. Cooper is so intelligent. Overall, he is well behaved but we got him when he was just one years old. Several years ago we did take him to dog training classes to fine tune him. We did not finish the course because Cooper wasn’t really listening anyway. 😂 Fortunately, the breeder had trained him before we got him because he is stubborn. 😂 Cooper is always loving and wonderful!

I have had her for two months now and I walk her 20 to 40 minutes once and sometimes twice a day plus play with throwing a toy she fetches and returns without fatique... Having said this and really experiencing the excessive energy of this breed I find it hard to believe an elderly person with low mobility could properly excercise and care for such a highly energetic breed. I/We have a Father-Son combo males. Dad is your typical Yappy Spoiled Child. His son is very laid back and often tells his dad "Pop can you just be quite, for at least one minute?" Both are great dogs. The father belongs to my son and the son belongs to me. It is funny when we take them to the vet. People look at me and my son, who are huge in size and look like bikers. People expect us to have large dogs. I always tell people; "You can always judge the size of a man by the size of his dog. The bigger the dog, the smaller the man! " LOL! We love our Warrior Dogs!

I have a 15 year old Yorkie and before Minnie, there were two others. First Basil, then Mikey. There are no cons and all have grown up with cats, (Mikey was best friends with our cat Midnight and she mourned his death.) chickens and chicks, ducks and ducklings, and Labradors. Yorkies do act like leaders and will protect your livestock, even going after a bald eagle (Minnie did!!). And don't be folded by their dainty look. Minnie has gone after a stoat, kitten sized farm rats, mice and even a rabbit that is the same size as her. I pray she stays longer with me, but if she doesn't I will be in the market for.....(you guessed it!!!).....another Yorkie.

I have a Yorkshire Terrier and everything is about you handle the dog and train them. Mine is super friendly with all size dogs, barely barks however he did try when puppy don’t just don’t encourage them for those behaviours and that’s all. Also some Yorkshire Terrier can come in a larger size due to their ancestors which is a mix of 7 different breed of terriers and they keep up to 5 generations back in their DNA that’s why there are some with white patches.
Amazing dogs! After having Great Danes which are beautiful dogs, my yorkie make me felt totally and madly in love with him.

My yorkie was VERY easy to train, he doesn’t have a problem with other breeds although he is very territorial, he likes rough playing (but rough for his size) and never had any injuries, we also don’t groom him that much and he never had any complications, he also never destroyed anything, even without training (and I mean NEVER)

I've never had a dog and since my military partner wants a dog in the near future, I'd like to start with a well behaved small breed, i used to know one that was named Loki, he was the best boy ever and he nevr barked, he also always loved going for short walks but unfortunately died from a heat stroke when my friends mom left him out in the balcony by accident on a very hot greek day. Loki really changed my perspective in small dogs, i always thought small dogs were horrible due to their yapping and sassy personalities but i realized that it all comes from the owners since many owners get small dog breeds thinking they dont need training and they end up being the sassy, yapping and biting type of really really annoying dogs that one cant stand.

I think my yorkie is broken, she's the opposite of 70% of the facts here. She loves everyone. Cats, dogs, humans (even people I absolutely despise). She's a big coward and a crybaby. She does not bark unless it's playtime or she hears a strange noise at nighttime and I'm asleep ( if I'm awake, she'll let me know something's wrong without barking).
She loves playing rough, gentle games bore her.
She's a piece of art, that's for sure.
This breed's personalities are sooo freaking weird 😂 you never know what you're going to get.
You're absolutely right about checking the liver, mine had a shunt and had to undergo a surgery at 5 months old ( which was a success! ☺️). She's 6 now and currently has other health issues we're trying to get rid of but she's a fighter.

I have 2 Yorkies one is a Parti Yorkie and the other one is a snorkie. They're the best dogs ever! They don't poop or potty on my furniture, beds couch chairs and sleeping area. They're really smart and with consistency and patience they could be well trained. They only bark on certain circumstances such as if they're in their crate and wants to potty or eat. I don't take my Yorkies every because they're with me 90% time of the day. The cons is YOU CANNOT TAKE THEM EVERYWHERE. People only say that because tea cup Yorkies are small, but if you have a regular Yorkie they're not small enough to put in your purse. You can't take them into grocery stores for sanitation reasons. You shouldn't take them in stores anyway especially if they're not potty trained. You can travel with them while on the plane or car riding. When I got my first Yorkie I thought that she wouldn't get that big. She's 7.2lbs and others have stated that their dogs was 10-12lbs max. They're Clingy. This could be a good or bad thing but sometimes clingy pups could be annoying when you're trying to complete a task, do home work or cook. Yorkies demand attention at all times. Lol and if you have 2 that can be a bit of a challenge.

Lol He acts out when I have company which isn't often, and he has some weird quirks that he does. Anytime I'm headed to the sofa he comes towards me barking and runs two laps around the sofa then jumps up on the sofa. Anytime that I go through a door inside or outside he barks and acts wild. He can go through a door by himself and it's not an issue .

Took a whole year just to gain one pound and still remains the same (4 pounds). I thought she would love to cuddle but no...it has be be her way. She’ll sit on my lap but if I pet or rub her she wants to fight me😂 Mom says she owns me and I know Bella thinks that too. She’s my little monster.

My Yorkie cohabitated with other animals in the household very well.
She would have a fit when my son had the parakeet (Killer) out of his cage, but she knew what "don't hurt the birdie" meant. Only problem was the danged bird loved to terrorize her by pulling the hair on the back of her legs and peck her toes if he got the chance.
And she was buddies with my son's pet rabbit. That rabbit was every bit as big as she was, if not a bit bigger. The rabbit would swipe and eat her milk bones, so the she in turn would swipe and eat the rabbits carrots. One day, when my son was careless, the rabbit got out of the yard and went for a "stroll" down the alley. She had a fit and let us know about the problem..... she was trained to not go out of the yard, so she just stood there and craned her next around the gat post looking in the direction the rabbit went. When my son brought the rabbit back into the yard, she pranced around in circles with her tail wagging, that little tongue hanging out of that grinning mouth, barking and wagging, and when the rabbit was set down on the ground, she had to investigate her all over licking her ...... the rabbit just stretched out and let the dog do her thing.
Yes, they can easily be trained to be around and with other animals in the household. It's all in the training ...... and the nature of your dog ...... regardless of breed.
