  • Joe Buck mentions that former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson was "as hard assed as they come". Aikman agrees, but then gives his two cents on what made Johnson a great and successful coach at the NFL level.

Had Jimmy Johnson stayed on as head coach, I truly believe that the Cowboys would have won 4 Super Bowls in a row.

What made Jimmy so great was that even though he got the Herschel Walker trade, you got to draft the right players which Jimmy did. With Emmitt Smith and getting the right players especially with Darren Woodson, Alvin Harper, Russell Maryland, Kevin Smith, and even drafted Jimmy Smith who would later be a legend in Jacksonville. Jimmy also knew what buttons to push to motivate players. He made it terrible if you lost but let you be yourself as long as you performed. That's why Troy loved Jimmy because he got the other players in shape and disciplined. With Barry, he wasn't like that. He basically told the players you are men and can look after yourselves. This isn't college anymore. Sadly, there were most on that team that needed that discipline that Barry never gave that Jimmy would have done.

Psychology majors usually pick a direction. They either break folks down and pick them apart or they master positive psychology. Either way can be effective depending on the person. Jimmy Johnson was a model for other coaches to follow. He was great for people and great for PR. He left a great legacy and his mark on the game was real and it was raw.

@@Supermanfan99 Marino retired the same year he did. He could have got a QB and carried on but he went to the booth. The Minnesota trade set Jimmy up and changed the face of the NFL for years. Jimmy never even made it out of the divisional round when he left Dallas. For him to leave after he ran the players into the ground in Miami and losing 62 to 7 to Jacksonville is sad. Coughlin won 2 Super Bowls over possibly the greatest dynasty and greatest QB ever and is NOT in the Hall of Fame and Jimmy is. Gimme a break.

Jerry Jones's ego fked us Cowboy fans - Jimmy Johnson could have been the lifetime coach for the Cowboys, maybe still coaching them and they would have had more Super Bowl wins than NE. Just like Troy said, Jimmy knew how to get the best out of his players, and he didn't tolerate any BS, he knew how to motivate and win and make you a better person and player.
