If you watch the video it is very clear that 70 comes running on the field performing the hand gestures to report him as an eligible receiver. He is running toward the ref while making these hand gestures and you can see the ref is looking at him.

    Great take, fellas. Thank you! Blows my mind that Allen thinks the Lions A) sent the eligible guy to an ineligible spot, B) Sent an ineligible player to an eligible spot, C) Threw to Decker with the entire play clearly focused that way. Allen simply made a poor assumption and wasn't able to or didn't know to correct it.

    • @Gamevet
      @Gamevet 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The Lions didn't need to have 3 offensive lineman showing up, to create confusion on who was the eligible receiver. It was made obvious, when the official announced that #70 was eligible, that 68 was not acknowledged by the officials.

    • @michaeldurkin8659
      @michaeldurkin8659 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's not a great take because it ignores that Decker was not an eligible receiver based upon how he lined up. Even if the ref got the number wrong (which the Lions did nothing to correct, even though they admit that they knew the ref had the wrong number), Decker was still ineligible because of how the the offense lined up. How this is being ignored by the supposedly expert pundits is beyond me. They are not looking at the whole play, just one aspect. Also, the video clearly shows that 70 ran toward the ref and signaled he was the eligible receiver while doing so. The ref clearly saw and believed that or he would not have made the announcement he did. The Lions had multiple penalties on that play, all of them legit and would have resulted in the play coming back with a loss of 5 yards.
      What this take was is a softball take to not get your self on the bad side of the NFL.

      @@andrewambrus6826 Yes. Lots of people who analyzed this quickly missed the lineup. That has been covered by many others. Interestingly, during the broadcast, either Troy or Joe (can't remember which) said at that time that 68 was not lined up legally to catch a pass. Also, you can't change the fact that 70 was announced to the defense and in the stadium, both head coaches acknowledge that they heard that 70 was announced, but yet Detroit did nothing to correct it. umber 70 made the motion while running up to the ref to report that he was going to be eligible. The ref clearly saw that, because that is what he announced and what Detroit told the refs they would be doing before the game. There is a reason that Detroit sent three offensive linemen to the ref to report, but claim that only one did. They were trying to create confusion and they did that successfully. They confused everyone, even themselves because they lined up wrong.

It does appear #68 verbally reports as eligible, sans the physical gesture (hand in air rubbing jersey). It's my understanding that both the verbal and physical gesture is required. And then when he gets three answers, THEN he makes the announcement about eligibility. Brad Allen went too fast, and if he had announced the illegal formation foul also, he would have made things much easier on himself.

    They intentionally ran 3 players at the ref. Campbell has clarified that. The lions knew that the cowboys had been told that 70 was the eligible receiver. The lions heard, along with everyone in the stadium, the announcement on the overhead speakers that it was #70, not #68. In spite of the fact that the clock was stopped, he made no attempt to correct the situation. The cowboys have the right to know who the eligible lineman is, and campbell knew they would throw to a different player than the cowboys had been told was eligible. That is on the lions. Whoever the ref announces, that is the one that is eligible. Campbell thought he could get away with pulling a fast one over on the cowboys. It backfired and bit him in the butt. He got what he deserved. Karma ruled that instance. It was his shenanigans that confused the ref (if indeed 68 reported and 70 didn’t), it was his responsibility to undo the confusion or get a penalty.
    The cowboys have the right to know who the eligible receiver is, and campbell tried to rob them of that right.

    Lions fans are not complaining about the tripping miscall. The Cowboys didn't get two more chances after the miscall.

    its not the job of the ref not to get confused.. Brad Allen is not a pro ref if he cant sort out the crucial situation with game on the line like that..

    When the ref announced 70 Goff knows he cant throw to 68. Why not turn to ref and figure it out. Worst case senerio is you get a delay of game and kick the field goal. Its not fair for Dallas because they covered 70 as they should.

      Then wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume they didn’t actually hear who the ref announced as eligible? Because why would he throw to a play that he knows is ineligible

      @@jc43261jc I agree why? But either way Dallas would have covered 68 if the ref had told them 68 instead of 70. So the issue is with Detroit and the refs so it was the right call

      @@mikelasalvia9548 the play was specifically designed to get 68 open by confusing the defense with 70 coming in despite 68 being declared eligible, and 8 was used on a pick block on two defenders. You can’t simply say that Dallas would have covered and prevented the play from happening because the ref simply messed up his job and made it unfair for both teams. Detroit had no timeouts and was unable to correct the refs as they didn’t notice until after the play, so the correct and appropriate thing to do is to just replay the down, not a penalty

    This is all after Campbell explained it all before the game.

    What's this crap about officials being caught off guard? They're supposedly the best of the best, they've seen it all, and this happened? The whole thing was a cluster, but I think the refs gotta eat this one.
