To be honest with you, personally, it's a letdown from Ableton for me. When you compare it to the free updates you receive in FL Studio, this seems like a joke. I believe everyone needs to decide for themselves what they want from their DAW, but as a professional who has been using Ableton for 10 years, the new version doesn't offer enough to justify the upgrade cost. There's nothing groundbreaking, and it looks almost identical to version 11. FL Studio alone introduced several impressive features in a free update, including AI Stem extraction, a Mastering option during song export, customizable piano roll scripts that the community can write on their own, text-to-chords functionality, and more. This is coming from an Ableton power user, and I must admit, it's a bit disappointing in comparison.
I agree on all the comments! There is still a lack of updating the sampler to the harmor vst level! There is a lack of the ability to make colored markers in the arrangement window!

Still not being able to freeze groups is pretty awkward, the greatest advantage of grouping stuff is saving cpu. But then if you put too many plugins in the chain you end up regretting not processing each thing individually and then freezing each. Sometimes it is even worth having mostly similar chains for multiple channels just so you can freeze them
It is actually possible to freeze groups. Through a little Workaround though. Just set up a Compressor preset where the DRY/WET is set to zero, and the Filter section is turned OFF. Load this Compressor on a new empty MIDI track. Set the group you want to Freeze as Sidechain Input of the Compressor. Now draw a Midi clip on that track for the length you want to freeze. As a long term user of Ableton coming over from FL studio a few years back, I hope they can get close to the workflow in the piano roll on FL, but I doubt it will still get there even with these awesome updates, unfortunately.
New Fl Studio user, after I used Ableton Live 8, you can’t beat free upgrades for life, ngl Ableton has some really, really cool stuff (dividing midi notes is one of those features) unfortunately you will need a powerful laptop to run Ableton with plugins like Reaktor, (I love Reaktor despite what Native Instruments has become)
I have to ask, besides chord stamps (which you get with LES), what else is missing in Abletons piano roll now compared to FL? I thought they closed the gap considerably with this update. They pretty much took out a lot of Max4Live devices and workarounds I had in place to get close to FLs piano roll.
@@Maxion0090 I agree, they've closed the gap for the most part on the piano roll. As an Ableton user I'm satisfied. The one thing that will always make FL Studio faster than Ableton though for Hip Hop Producers is the Channel Rack for laying down drums. Its faster than the Drum Rack by far because you can just click in patterns so quickly. Even after seeing all this I still think the FL Studio Piano Roll menu is more extensive.
Not sure if the changes justify a major release. Different example: Studio one just released a huge update with full Dolby Athmos Producing, Mixing and Mastering. Including a gui overhaul to support that. New effects, devices and major overhaul of features. I mean check the 6.5 changelog. And it’s a minor update free for everyone owning S1 v6 already. Ableton implemented some randomization and a couple effects…wow. Still waiting for the much needed updates to make Push 3 standalone a device that at least feels like a beta version. Not speaking of a device with the money. Anyway. Nice feature overview and some true words.
I love the chord progression function (stacks)!! Thank you for this insight Alice ❤ P.S.: also your recommendation regarding the new features (being able to lock notes while auto-generating new patterns) is great! You should work for Ableton 😊💜✨
Have they finally fixed the atrocious MIDI clock/external instrument issues which makes recording hardware with consistent and accurate timing completely impossible? When I emailed them about this they literally told me "its a bug, sorry". Really hope this bug was fixed because its my main DAW, and constantly having to readjust these settings has been really driving me insane for years.
Bitwig s developer are from Ableton core team...looks like thay compensate that now and come up with fresh ideas and good copys of Bitwig features.. competition helps.. but hey are fare behind even V12..
Curious if the piano roll transformations can have an LFO or any other kind of automations. Could make some interesting tunes or even percussion loop generation.
Ableton user here. There is some good stuff for this release but I don't think it will convince the Hip Hop producers on FL Studio to migrate to Ableton. They already have the slice feature, strum feature, and their channel rack makes it faster to lay down drums than Ableton STILL (unless there is something similar to the channel rack but I don't see it here).
I always wanted to open multiple projects in tabs like a normal browser, so I can navigate from one to another and drag & drop stuff from a project to another..
AI could be dangerous for music production. If implemented, Music generating AI could produce similar ideas to someone using Ableton in another part of the world.
We need AI to stay away from music production. it hasn't and will never have that human emotion and touch. plus it's all about learning. i feel if your not willing to learn about notes and chords yourself thene you shouldn't produce. having a random generative tool is fine as its not AI.
Yeeess, I was waiting for an improved browser! I feel like they actually added a few features from the ableton redesign by nenad milosevic and I am all for it! All ableton now needs is hybrid tracks and bounce in place.
what abt the performance?? i think it’s something everyone have been asking for since ableton 10 and the most important thing bc with all of this improvements seems you’ll quite good cpu power
I got from the telling, that people can create m4l as midi transformers/modulators. This is the place to add AI and i guess there will be a lot of ideas from the community.
@@hrvstmusic Its great and everything But charging people for features other daws had for years is kinda scummy This feels more lika an update than an upgrade
Still waiting to assign a master clip in a track and editing the rest of clips just by editing the master track. Because if you want to make a small adjustment on a clip, you need to edit every single copy of it too one by one. I just don't know like it is the most basic feature.
Ableton is currently training their AI as we speak and this will be available in a future update…the training is an arduous task and they could not wait on this to be done in order to release ableton 12.
I spent two hours toiling with Ableton 11’s piano roll this evening, and after spending years with Cubase, I was reminded why I never committed to it. I’m glad it’s getting some much needed love with version 12.
Thanks for the overview! As for Live 12, I'm a little underwhelmed. The options to view clips and devices simultaneously and the mixer in arrangement view are definitely improvements - and IMHO long over due, because the lack thereof was just blatantly stupid. Apart from that, I don't think I would have use for any of the new features. Too bad.
Hey! Thx for always making great videos. I'd also love it for it to use the same tech they use for similar samples for tagging, but for now my solution has been selecting multiple samples and bulk tagging them. That's the fastest way I've found, I don't rely too much on samples, but I get it. A lot of people have huge libraries. Oh & probably many people are wondering. As far as I've been told if anyone bought L11 if you got it from October 15 on you should be getting a L12 free update. Stay cool! Greetings from Mexico City
It would be nice to have some AI, but you have to remember that AI needs a lot of resources. The most powerful ones work inside giant servers online, not inside users' computers. Plus, it is a really recent technology yet, and it is not so easy to develop or implement.
I agree and let's remember that part of "resources" means musical data that would be taken from actual artists anyway. Even if Live had it I'd turn the bloody thing off.
Imageline is the company that is behind. I've been using FL Studio for 23 years and they have only just recently added volume envelope functionality to audio clips.
Perhaps in 2030 we will be able to see the devices on the mixer too… this daw is creative but when it comes to mixing and mastering, we go for other pro daws.
I just switched to Ableton from FL studio, although these updates are great, FL studio has had all of these piano roll functions. Since I've been using Ableton 11, I installed don't understand why so many simple and useful functions either haven't been implemented yet, or are just now being implemented in 12. With that being said, I love how Ableton sounds, I can't explain it, the way everything comes together for the final output sound, it just feels closer to my style and the types of sounds I want to produce. FL studio sounds more suited towards EDM, trap and Techno, none if which I am into.
The piano roll is actually the reason I switched out of Ableton and went over to Reaper. Cubase and Reaper have solid midi. Odd for a daw who's focus is electronic music.
@AmiliaCaraMia Yeah, the piano roll is primitive in my opinion. If FL studio had the effects and sound engine as Ableton that give it its sound, then we'd be good. My style and sound just couldn't evolve the way I wanted it to. Its gotta be crispy, as of now im not feeling crispy. I've used both Reaper and Cubase years ago, but I might try and get intimate with each of those two again and see if i mesh well with either. I just want to get lost in the sounds and have a party by myself without anything getting in the way when I want to do something. Reason also looks like it'd be interesting to try.
Hi. Thank you for review. You are telling a lot about lack of pattern (melody) generators inbuilt in Ableton. How about to make a review of existing plugin generators from other developers?
I can understand AI as tool for stem separation and other support similar activities. Don't really get why I should rely on it to create chords or other cardinal parts of a song. Chords, melody and rhythm - together with lyrics - are what *make* a song. So if AI does that it's not "my music", it's AI's. As a composer, this is cringe to me. Maybe as a professional who must produce quickly I see how it would have a justification and value. Not for authoring own music, at all.

I don’t want a ml engine in Ableton. I still want it lean for live performances
I am sure they can just make it a setting you can turn on or off.
ableton again cementing itsself as the daw for people that dont know anything about music..cubase has the best midi roll without question.
Thank you for this insight Alice ❤
P.S.: also your recommendation regarding the new features (being able to lock notes while auto-generating new patterns) is great! You should work for Ableton 😊💜✨
Thank you for the review Alice. Even though the new version is pretty much the same... 😅
A.I needs servers, and Ableton never pays for these kind of things..Just wants 159 euros for an Update..
cooool free lifetime updates!!!!! that's awesomeee... wait....no that's 🥭
Wish you merry xmass and happy new year..all the best from Oslo
The Piano Roll is definitely not better than Cubase.
Why?
Dynamic EQ = use Envelope Follower to modulate EQ8's node(s). I know it's a workaround, but it ...works :)
BTW, great video - thanks!!!
Youre talking about sidechain eq. It is not the same as dynamic eq
@@omegalitico No, I'm not. You can run Envelope Follower on the same signal that will further be "equalized".
Have they finally fixed the atrocious MIDI clock/external instrument issues which makes recording hardware with consistent and accurate timing completely impossible? When I emailed them about this they literally told me "its a bug, sorry". Really hope this bug was fixed because its my main DAW, and constantly having to readjust these settings has been really driving me insane for years.
amazing they finaly added a slice tool that exist in FL 20 years!!! ))
I MUCH prefer that it isn't using AI and is just random ❤
MINd blowing !!!! can't wait to use it
I have Ableton 11 suiite and the update is on sale for $183 then it goes up $229! A bit pricey!
Every DAW has stepped up this year and introduced something new
AAAh humanity. Always complaining about what they don't get instead of enjoying what they do. Peace and enjoy! :)
Fl studio smash ableton
It's crazy that Ableton didn't include AI while FL already did..
Looks very underwhelming tbh
Yeeess, I was waiting for an improved browser!
I feel like they actually added a few features from the ableton redesign by nenad milosevic and I am all for it!
All ableton now needs is hybrid tracks and bounce in place.
What are hybrid tracks?
@@jeremyformerlyknownastoken8218 maybe midi and audio same time?
what means bounce in place?
It has a new freeze and flatten function. BIP is
@@jeremyformerlyknownastoken8218 kind of like bitwig has it, midi and audio in the same track
Cool update. Looks like they are listening about what we wanted for a piano roll. The FL Studio Gang will like this update.
Thank you for the overview! Big big fan of your work
I hope they have added a way to seperate the drum rack!!!!!
Im still on ableton live 10 because no money for update :S
what abt the performance?? i think it’s something everyone have been asking for since ableton 10 and the most important thing bc with all of this improvements seems you’ll quite good cpu power
!
ableton & performance and without sandbox stability...😂😅😅😂😅
CPU Spike is the Nr.1 theme on ALive website
I also said that , where is the aiiiiii
Before you said that in video ...
ITS MUST .❤
I got from the telling, that people can create m4l as midi transformers/modulators. This is the place to add AI and i guess there will be a lot of ideas from the community.
Still not even close to FL Studio's piano roll
There are two futures that i want: piano poll with notes, like guitar pro, or cubase and ability to turn audio samples...😢
oh wow i can do all this shit in every other daw too this is great
They tried but its piano roll is still not as good as FL
I prefer logic, ableton looks cheap
I loved all the features, but the new midi implementations is my favorite update
I feel like this update is mostly just midi improvements that are overdue. Dunno if they necessitated a whole ass new version of Live
@@hrvstmusic welcome to capitalism
Welcome to Ableton - don’t question it though
@@hrvstmusic
Its great and everything
But charging people for features other daws had for years is kinda scummy
This feels more lika an update than an upgrade
I have 11 and will wait for 13. For me the new things seems great, but are not something I feel a rush to get 🤷
What kind of mic do you have?
Still waiting to assign a master clip in a track and editing the rest of clips just by editing the master track. Because if you want to make a small adjustment on a clip, you need to edit every single copy of it too one by one. I just don't know like it is the most basic feature.
Ableton is currently training their AI as we speak and this will be available in a future update…the training is an arduous task and they could not wait on this to be done in order to release ableton 12.
Does the find similar function work for drum midi beats?
I spent two hours toiling with Ableton 11’s piano roll this evening, and after spending years with Cubase, I was reminded why I never committed to it. I’m glad it’s getting some much needed love with version 12.
I really hope Ableton will hear your suggestions ❤❤❤
Just curious, if you're using a second window, do you have full flexibility to configure them each independently?
To answer the question, 'NO'!
FL is still the best when it comes to piano rolls. But I feel Logic will takeover someday.
Mixer in arrangement view is a GAME CHANGER. Finally 🎉
This update is pretty mid in comparison to the recent FL Studio update
eh..still years behind FL Studio 21.2
Imageline is the company that is behind.
I've been using FL Studio for 23 years and they have only just recently added volume envelope functionality to audio clips.
Perhaps in 2030 we will be able to see the devices on the mixer too… this daw is creative but when it comes to mixing and mastering, we go for other pro daws.
What’s stupid is there was a hack to show this! So it exists but who knows what the team are doing to not enable it.
sadly the hack doesn't work for me, not showing any third party plugin plus can't open anything, useless@@richertz
@@carlosp.1846 I agree and why should you have to hack it? Well it’s what is. Use different DAW as I do. (I own Live, Pro Tools, and Logic.
🔥🔥Where can I find the Drum loop at Min 03:00?
no mms papito quieres que te haga toda la rola el ai
Purchased Live 11 a few days ago. Website said release of Live 12 will be early 2024. Is it really out now? If so, how can I upgrade?
