So, trans women have an innate advantage over cis women in sports because of a testosterone-driven puberty, but trans men *also* have an advantage over cis men because of... a normal amount of hormones in their systems? Make up your minds before you discriminate, at the very least.

another fun thing about this argument is that there are plenty of cis female athletes with polycystic ovary syndrome (which is often a cause of high testosterone levels) but that's fine. Hormones only become a problem to sports when they're socially unacceptable, it's ridiculous

Same here. It's kind of funny that the first nonbinary people I ever heard of were AMAB. There's another layer to that though, which is when the fantasy of becoming a mythical creature persists well into one's teens and adulthood. I was obsessed with shapeshifters for most of my life, and would identify most with werewolves and other oft vilified shapeshifters in fiction. To me, they're an allegory for freeing oneself from the shackles of society, and living out one's true nature. The constant feelings of wanting to become something else, anything else than what you are, is a strong indication of being trans or nonbinary.
To add, even if it's just a kid playing pretend, parents should always encourage their kids' creativity and imagination. Let them be who they want, dress how they want, and explore who they were meant to be.

I can grow a baby mustache if I leave it (in fact at one point during lockdown I did because I stopped using mirrors so hadn't been plucking, and hadn't noticed), I'm pangendered but biologically female and have had no kind of hormone therapy. Some women just are hairier than men (my legs used to be hairier than me brother's but illness has actually left them 98% smooth), and that's not even allowing for hormone imbalances like PCOS, unfortunately society still has issues with that in cis women, let alone trans.
There seems to be this misunderstanding that if you're trans then you want to embrace the most extreme of that gender (eg very girlie women or very masc men), so ignorant people get confused if a transwoman is more masc presenting or a transman is more feminine presenting. When I was at uni, 20 years ago, I knew a transwoman who would get openly mocked (fortunately nothing worse but that was bad enough), even from withing the lgbtq+ community, just because she wore a dress when her legs were hairy or had stubble on her chin (didn't matter that she had to grow it out to go for permanent removal sessions, people just didn't think), they would say awful stuff like "if you want to be a woman why aren't you feminine" one even asked me to give her essonne on being more womanly...which was laughable considering my clothing style etc has always been fairly androgynous towards masculine, she was more feminine in than I would ever be. Fortunately, it just made her more definiant and intent on being herself. I've never been girly and would point that out, women don't have to be "feminine" to be women regardless of whether they're cis or trans and body hair is not a reflection of how feminine you even are (there are increasingly women models rocking their hairy legs & armpits and I love it).
I'd like to think things have moved on, and maybe most within the community have become more open minded (I'd hope), but it's very dependent on where you live...also The Cis-Hets (tm)...I think they're lagging behind (even is more Liberal areas). There's just a lack of understanding all around when it comes to separating gender and personal expression etc, and it's hard to educate the people who don't want to understand (like most of these people in the posts). So, yeah, I can see how it can get risky for trans woman who are OK with their facial hair. It sucks that you have to deal with that kinda shit just being yourself. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈💜

@@zlcoad1 As a trans masc, 12 is honestly probably a bit early for regular binder use. I'm not an expert and you should do your own research, but binding can absolutely harm the ribs over time especially if you're still growing. Your child's happiness is also very important so there's a lot of factors to consider. If they absolutely must bind, get a gc2b brand, it's the most reputable as far as i know, and buy a size larger than the sizing chart recommends. If they're concerned a size up won't do enough, remind them that they still have some growing to do, and sizing up a binder is how a lot of transmascs can go swimming so it doesn't do nothing. Start with very short periods of time, maybe an hour just in the house at first. Exercising, even something like going up the stairs can cause a lot more stress. Never EVER use ace bandages to bind, it can crack your ribs. The amount of time you use your binder is important as well as the frequency, there needs to be multiple days a week where they don't wear a binder at all. Start small and if there's any difficulty breathing or discomfort, it's time to remove it. Do your research and teach them the risks if binding so they don't push their limits. If they seem upset by not being able to wear a binder all the time it would be a good idea to make sure they have good trans masc role models. Unfortunately there are a lot of trans masc people who think you must wear a binder and never show femininity to be a trans man and hearing those views can be really damaging for young trans people. Trans bodies are beautiful the way they are and while a binder can be a useful tool to alleviate dysphoria, trans mascs are valid no matter what, binder or not.
Sorry this is really long, I wish you and your child luck and it's really great that you're supporting them. If you both decide binding isn't for them, or that they aren't ready yet, there's other ways to hide a chest. Layers are your friend. T shirt with an open button up/flannel over it, hoodies, long sleeve shirt under short sleeve shirt, can all reduce or hide the appearance of a chest, depending on the size/body type. Also if you can, look into puberty blockers! it's not too late for them yet and puberty blockers are very well researched and have been used for about 30 years (I think) for various conditions. They basically pause puberty until they're old enough to either start HRT, or change their mind and go through their AGAB puberty. Puberty blockers can be life savers since you can't get hrt until you're about 16 in most places (with some exceptions but 16 is the general rule)

So it's true that prior to that differentiation, we all have the same anatomy, but it's not so much that everyone's female then, but more like, everyone has both sets of potential anatomy, waiting to be activated.

Some of the processes involving instructing the body to lower those into the scrotum sometimes don't work correctly, which is when one ends up stuck fully where it was formed or somewhere midway.
Same with the scrotum: the reason men have that dark, slightly odd looking skin seam at the underside of their penis and balls is because that's where the swelling bodies were repositioned after being destined to be in the labia, and the skin that was layed out to become labia grew together at those places.

Also, the soy milk thing makes me sigh deeply for a variety of reasons. The whole "soy gives you estrogen" idea is scientifically inaccurate, first of all - soy contains plant estrogen, which is basically estrogen for plants, meaning it doesn't do a thing to humans because we are not, in fact, plants. :P Second of all, the idea that estrogen is bad because people don't want to have it in their lattes is a confusing conclusion. I don't want insulin in my latte, either, but that doesn't mean diabetics don't have a medically necessary reason to use it. Luckily it worked via hooks and loops in the front (like bra hooks but a lot more and in the front) and I could unhook the lower 2-3 hooks/loops to breathe easier. If your binder makes you feel about to hurl, either it's the wrong size, or your wearing it wrong. What we need is a trans* apparel shop like Victoria's Secret, where we can get measured for binders like afab preteens are measured for bras, as well as whatever else people need to present as themselves.

I do often feel pressure from my binder specifically in my lower rib cage, around where the diaphragm is, so maybe thats what theyre getting at?? But still I think of it more as "lower ribs" than actually the binder pressing on my diaphragm.

I have an issue calling them trans prior to puberty starting. You can't tell young children apart by sex in the first place, so they literally can't transition, as they have zero reference being either gender. I can claim to be 6th dimensional human, but I don't have any experience that could allow me to even conceptualize how it would feel.
Let them wear whatever because societal norms of clothing are incredibly arbitrary. Plus calling anyone who doesn't follow stereotypical gender norms trans is an almost fundamental Christian level of restrictive normalization

Concerning the trans sports issue I recently saw an interview with a trans woman in sports (can't remember the sport) that had been kicked out of women's competition for being trans. It was the unfair advantage argument because she was male born. She said that actually she has a handicap because she is suppressing T and taking HRT so her muscles have faded but her body was still the size of a mans. Her analogy was to a truck having the V8 taken out and a four cylinder engine put in that now has to pull that big truck. I hadn't considered the reverse. A smaller body now has T powering it. Yet no one is fussing about trans men in sports. Probably due to just not understanding how trans works. I would love to hear more about this aspect, Jamie, if you read this comment.

    • @elliotmydude
      @elliotmydude 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

You didn't ask a specific question so I'll rapid fire some facts: You probably won't be able to start T until you're 16 (if you choose to go on T, it's not for everyone and you don't need it to be valid). Make sure you know all of the effects before you start. (Bottom growth, chanhes in metabolism, hair growth patterns, male pattern baldness etc etc) Your grandfather on your Mothers side usually determines if you will have male pattern baldness and when it will start. Ask him when/if he lost his hair if you're concerned about that.
There's many methods of taking T, if you're scared of injections, the gel works just as fast. There's also patches and i believe pills. These can work a bit slower than injections and gels but talk to the doctor prescribing it to you about what method is best for you.
Binding can be dangerous, opt on the air of caution if you choose to do that. Wear it for short periods (start with an hour) and only a couple days a week. If you have any pain or difficulty breathing, take it off. Never sleep or exercise with it on. You might want to wait a couple years to start binding, or start with a size up from what the sizing chart recommends. At 14 you might have some more growing to do. If you're not out to your family you can usually pass off a binder for a sports bra. If you get a binder get a gc2b, it's the most reputable brand and the racerback design is the most like a sports bra.
I want to reiterate: You do not need to bind to be valid. It always comes with risks no matter how careful you are. Depending on the size of your chest, layers can reduce or hide your chest.
If you're not out and plan on coming out: give your family grace, they will make mistakes no matter how supportive they are.
Depending on where you live you will have to jump through a lot of hoops to get perscribed anything. It will be annoying. You're probably to old for puberty blockers to have any significant effect but ask about it.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask, I'm not on T yet but I've researched and learned about it for about 4 years. I also know a good deal about both top surgery and bottom surgery but remember to do your own research!
