I am a almost 77 year old [next week] Irish /Maori from Aotearoa NZ. I grew up on a farm I have 2 daughters, 9 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. I have been doing what you are teaching for years and years plus growing my own vegetables & fruit. It is so good to see a young person doing this, it gives me hope for the future. I try to teach my family to live this way with no waste. Tell them to buy a cheap dehydrator to process excess fruit & vegetables into dried snacks that can be easily stored in glass jars. When I was young we used to dry food outside everything from fruit, vegetables, meat, eels & fish. Every night we had to bring it in, then put it back out the next day if it wasn't raining. It is so easy now you just buy a dehydrator all that extra work gone. Lovely. love you work.

So important for people to pass the right things on to younger generations. That's how we move Forward. I appreciate finding this video as well because she didn't just tell us to do these things but explained and detailed its actual significance. We need the whys in order to empower ourselves in knowledge and differentiate the true usefulness of various traditional practices. There are so many things that seem like common sense but one might never think of (like the fact that lettuce needs its moisture absorbed to not wilt) and one might come upon certain "hacks" only by happenstance through experience over time if there's no one there to show you the ropes even though it's been previously discovered and widely known.

I always wondered about the old fashioned way of dehydrating. How did you keep flies and other creepy crawlies away from the food?

@@pamelatorres2219 Pepper we always put pepper on the eels especially, bugs won't touch it , you can brush it off fruit etc after its dry! Simple.

While some may not like cold bananas I have found that keeping them in the refrigerator keeps them longer. I like a more green banana and have found that even after the peel starts turning a bit grey the banana itself is still firm and retains the flavor that I like.

Good advice. Also, if you regularly throw the same foods out, buy smaller packs, or don't buy them at all!
Or, before food starts to go bad, use it to make a meal, like soup, chilli or stew, that can be frozen and used any time, which can save you time & effort when you get home after a busy day at work!

Love your solution to limp scallions and can't wait to see if I can grow some in the fridge!!! I have struggled for years with keeping green onions fresh until I tried another tip I learned: remove them from the plastic bag, give them a good rinse under cool tap water, do not dry them, hold them in a bunch, wrap the bunch up in a couple of paper towels, place them in a sealed baggie, store in fridge. They will stay fresh and crisp for literally weeks!!!

About the honey You have to say... if you keep it away from moisture its shelf life is counted in thousands of years (in Egypt they have 5000years old honey and it is good for consumption. I know Polish bee keepers who kept some types of honey for years in original glass containers.

For centuries salt and sugar were used to preserve food and that food was stored at room temperature. Jams are sugar heavy, mustard, hot sauce, etc is preserved with vinegar, honey has natural antiseptic and have been found in the tombs of Egypt still perfectly preserved. I stored many foods in the refrigerator for years. One day I had an epiphany - wow, as a child we stored many of these food in the cupboard. Why was I wasting space in the frig? Now all my jams, mustards, hot sauces (not salsa), maple syrup, pickles/capers (not relish), steak sauces, peanut butter, tahini, all oils, soy sauce, honey, agave, and so much more.

I do a lot of gardening! They start outside the fridge for freshness, depending on my surplus from the garden, can salsa or tomato sauce, move some to the fridge and/or move some to the freezer for future tomatoes sauce recipes. I also dehydrate most of the scrapes from canning and make tomato powder, which I can make tomato paste out of.

  • @jacqjewel1

I simply read the label suggestions on condiment storage of each bottle.
As for the fridge storage of the seeds i store EVERYTHING in glass jars....no plastic! I soak my own chickpeas in large glass jars not canned (we eat lots of hummus). Then freeze in the jar with 1.5 inchs for expanded air allowance.
Tomatos if they have ripened too quickly i place them in the freezer to add to a future pasta sauce dish or stew!
Bananas we do the same as your method. But we dont ever but plastic wrap. Simply wrap with cut your own muslin cloth ties( fabric shop). Can wrap all veggies in crisper to keep seperate in brown paper bags or muslin cloth. Long green onion, broccolini , beetroot tops and celery can all be stored in the fridge in water jars/vases. Won't wilt.
Thanks for all the other tips. Loved it!

GRAPE TIP: A grape bunch can last longer if you pick a grape from the top of the bunch (close to the main stem) and stick it over the top of the stem. Then you can keep it outside the fridge and it will still last longer! I like eating them cold so I still put them in the fridge. A producer from my farmer's market shared this with me :)

TOMATOES: I've found the more air-flor the better, so Ii always take them out of the plastic, rinse with some baking soda water (then clear water) then pop into a basket with a lot of holes in it and place on a counter or table. I do find though that they ripen quickly in warmer weather and will toss them into the fridge if they're starting to ripen too fast. I'm wondering if the are giving off that same ethylene gas, if putting one of those blue apples might help them too.
CHEESE: I buy my favorite cheese in big blocks and I just make sure to wrap it in paper towels soaked in salt water. Then in a plastic container in the fridge. That keeps it good almost indefintly.

I've been a Vegan for 8 years. I'm not attempting to preach at anyone else but as for me it has changed my life! I have more energy than ever, am 76, take no medicine and the last time I was hospitalized was 1944!!
Food tip. I've been working on time saving. I've found that if I prep. my weekly meals all at once it saves time. I buy 2 cup pyrex bowls with tops and make multiple breakfasts, lunches and diners. Another benefit is that when I take long trips to the big city (I'm a full time Artist and go there often) I have these bowls with me and will eat at regular hours and not be tempted to buy Vegan processed foods which reduces my energy. It is all working out beautifully. More time saving and healthier.
I love your videos and am applying your very practical suggestions and feeling a lot calmer as a result.

When it comes to green onions, keeping them in a glass of water with the intent of harvesting the green parts every now and again isn't going to work for long. Plant them in dirt and use them as a houseplant if you want that. They need nutrients to keep growing. Never tried it as I don't use green onions much, but I do grow plants and they will probably last quite a while if you plant them.

Tomatoes - In Israel we are much warmer. In summer we easily reach 40 ° C in the shade. So in the summer I keep tomatoes in the refrigerator and in the winter I keep them on the countertop. And for that reason, did you know that tomatoes actually change their taste? In the summer they are sweeter and tastier, they respond well to the heat in the crop. And therefore the tomatoes arrive more ripe and juicy in the summer and there is no need to give them time to complete the process and be ready to use, so in the summer they keep them in the refrigerator otherwise they will spoil quickly. On the other hand, in the winter they are more sour and less tasty, especially if kept refrigerated. While when kept out of the refrigerator they become tastier after a few days.

But, I have no choice most of year as I live in a 4 season state. Although, I would prefer them cold as I like to sometimes just eat them by slicing them and eating them by themselves. Perhaps, you could find out for us if refrigerating them just for an hour or two would take from the flavor? First time seeing your video-good stuff!!!!

Aussie here on the South Coast of Ozz.. we get quite muggy humid days here being on the coast & rainforest, so I do as the instructions say & once opened in the fridge, unopened in the pantry (condiments, jams & chutney's ect...) Things like honey, ginger syrup's, trickle & golden syrup in pantry, pickle jar on counter so people can grab one .. keep the butter we use in the butter dish in the pantry (unless super hot day it melts, so then whip the butter dish in the fridge, pull it out a bit before using), & the tomato's on the bench, where we keep most of the fruit too!
The flavour of tomato's at room temp. are better, in the fridge they lose their flavour... same with strawberries & cheese (I take them out a hour or so before serving).
Some egg's I keep out, but most are stored in the fridge.
Love that info on banana's, I never knew that & the spring onions... loving the tidbits in your video, learning a lot!
