The fridge shelves, that are at eye level, or are easyest to see, are the ones with leftovers and ready to eat foods. The lower (in my case) shelves are for things that need to be cooked or prepared. That way we reduce the "i didn't know we still had that" line :)
I got so tired of slimy greens that I just learned to grow them indoors in pots. I start a new pot of kale, spinach, and arugula every few weeks to keep the greens going. You can grow them all in one big pot and snip what you need when they have nice size leaves.
Melissa I wanted to also mention about your microfiber cloths. I bought them beginning of the last year. I have to tell you they are best microfiber cloths that I have ever used! I still use the cheap ones but only for like things that you can't get out like something with the car grease etc. Yours I use strictly for house cleaning. I'm so blessed watching you for 10 years now. I've pre-ordered your book and cloths, your tips, your diy cleaning products. Everything and I mean everything I done from what you provided and tried and true methods have never failed. Thank you and Chad so much for providing your experience to us. I learned so much 🙂❤️
Great tips, I buy cheese in a large block and grate it in my food processor and freeze it in bags, great for cooking or chucking on a pizza and I don't have to grate small amounts by hand and wash up a grater!
Souper Cubes on Amazon! Each tray has 4 1 cup cubes, PERFECT for food prep. Yes, they're designed to freeze portions of soup/chili, but I use them to portion pastas, burrito/fajita bowls, etc before vacuum sealing. Definitely worth investing in!
When I buy herbs by the bunch, I always put what I don't need now in a small vase with water (just so the stalks are in the water), and put it in the fridge. It'll keep fresh for up to a week (depending on the herb), especially when I replace the water daily and pick out slimy leaves.
I buy a lot of kale at once; when I get home, I wash, cut, and sauté all of it right away with some oil and garlic. I store it in a big container in the fridge, and it's ready to go whenever I want to cook with it! Save a lot of time during busy weeknights :)
I know where to put things in the fridge. But now that I am vegan, I'm wondering if its the same for the alternativ products. Should vegan cheese be put on the same shelf as the normal cheese? What about the plant based meat? Does it depend on the plants they are made of?
Recently, with the replacement of my old fridge, I came across a tip that seems to be working. I used to line the bottom of my vegetable crisper drawer with several layers of paper towel, but I still ended up with decayed veg-sludge in the bottom, which of course hastened the decay of ALL the veggies stored in there. The tip is to line the bottom with dry sponges. So I ordered in a bunch of cheap scrubbie-type sponges (the ones with a scouring pad affixed to one side, but a good 1/2-inch or so of non-cellulose sponge with some give in it). I laid them in the drawer scouring-side down, allowing the veggies to sit on the softer sponge side. Any liquid is absorbed by the sponges and gravity pulls the damp away from the veggies, so there is no wet, no rot, no smell. So far, after a month, it seems to be working.
I used to do lettuce same but found it last even longer if you get leaves apart, wash, shake a bit then lay in a line on tea towel and roll, put in a zip lock bag. Experimenting with spinach suggest that absolutely not washing it before putting into frige and do same as you with paper towel in a box(not a bag cos cause more bruse and damage) I lay thin layers of spinach and papar tower in between two three times-really helps. Last thing parsley- plastic container with lid and a little bit of water on the bottom-no more wilted herb!
I do that as well.. I put all the veg 4 a multi veg soup ie ( carrot, celery, onion & parsnip ) blanche & chop all & put into the same freezer bag so when I want to make that soup mix, I just pull that bag out & throw into the pot & the same goes for smoothie mixes..
Hi Melissa & Chad just wanted to say that I've been using the 1st wave tidy, then working clockwise top to bottom system and it's made my cleaning SO much better. Thanks for all the awesome tips!
Yes I’d love to know more! Not sure if it’s quite food storage but I always wash grapes and berries in an Apple cider vinegar soak for 5 minutes. I really believe the berries keep longer.
I love keeping my head lettuce in a damp cloth bag. Keeps for weeks. If the bag dries out and it wilts a bit, just get the bag damp again and crisps right back up.
My favorite food storage is my butter bell on my counter. Takes up the same amount of room as a drinking glass but holds a full stick of butter. Keeps it soft and fresh :) I couldn't live without one now! Also my grandmother taught me to put an apple slice in the container overnight if brown sugar turns into a rock. The next day the brown sugar is soft.
To keep them fresher, I store flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and coffee, in the freezer. Also to extend their shelf life I store yeast, batteries, and seeds (planting) in the refrigerator.
Doing all of this now lol!! I TRULY hate wasting food and produce!! I'm trying to learn to save and store food and produce to save on our grocery bill so, thank you so much for sharing!!❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼
I have tried my hardest to stop watching TH-cam all day it's almost as if it's an adiction once i seen this CLEAN MY SPACE from Melissa i completely relapse from my addiction i kept saying to myself it'll be fine just one video . . . Lets just say I'm caught up with clean my space videos! It'll be fine . . . Ooh look i see another video from Melissa i haven't seen
I always toast my bread, once slice a day; so to make it last, before I refrigerate or freeze it, I put a piece of paper towel on the top and piece on the bottom of the loaf to absorb the moisture, but it still keeps it moist without the mould. It always tastes fresh; no freezer burn when I do buy 2-3 loaves at a time.
For hard as rock brown sugar I microwave for 30 seconds then bash it and back in for 30 and bash again. Do this till it's fluffy and soft again. Spinach I put into a zip lock but don't stuff it but fill it enough that when you shake it it moves a wee bit and then blow into it and twist it closed tying it with a twist tie and it will last 2 -3 weeks without becoming slimy. I've done it for yrs and works everytime. Limp celery and carrots leave in cold water for about an hr and they spring back nice and fresh again. I just use the sink. I'd LOVE to learn the ins and outs of a freezer and fridge. Mine usually freezes the eggs, salad or soup on the top shelf.
buying iceberg lettuce 2 at a time when I get home I peel off any rough looking leaves, trim the core bottom and put them in separate plastic zip locks with a dry paper towel. They'll keep nicely for a week in my fridge. Also, before I had a salad spinner I was the salad spinner. I washed all my green leafys, put them in a clean pillowcase, took them outside and twirled them over my head like mad.
Thank you for the temperature tip. That was a good reminder for the summer. I use my fridge as less as possible. I prefer to cook fresh bought organic vegetables. I only store milk products, meat, meat replacements and opened jars in our fridge. A fridge is handy, but it doesn't mean we have to chuck it full with food. With everything that is comfort, it has a downside for your health. Keep that in mind.
Before I head to the grocery store I do what you said about taking inventory in the my cabinets and my freezer and refrigerator. I try to use up whatever I have on hand to make assorted meals before I head out to the grocery store. And it's amazing how many meals I can make when I think I have to go to the grocery store. I try not to throw any food away. I use all my leftovers to make all different kinds of meals and they are delicious
buy your berries in the cardboard containers and wrap then in brown paper bags and they will last a week. Don't clean then until you use them. Hope this helps
Just to clarify if I'm on the same page, is it corrugated cardboard, single "ply" cardboard (like mushrooms are sometimes kept in), or paper pulp like an egg crate?
Great tips, both on your video and in the comments section. If I am not planning on using my Asparagus the same day I purchase it, I trim the ends and store it in the refrigerator standing up in a “beer” mug partially filled with water.
I store sallad in a similar way but I use a clean tea-towel instead of paper :) and you can freeze coffee to make ice coffee (frozen coffee cubes, sugar and milk) later :)
Thank you on the spinach and kale! Both foods I get regularly. I've also started freezing both kale and spinach, which (aside from salads) will defrost into a number of dishes.
When I open up a bottle of spaghetti sauce or a box of soup broth, I immediately freeze the portion I dont use it it's original container. Otherwise it goes bad in the fridge before I need it again. Sometimes I'll let the frozen ones build up for a while and then make a big batch of spaghetti sauce (or a soup with the broth) and freeze individual meals for when I'm too busy to cook
I have a great tip for the fridge inventory! Before I go to the grocery store, I take photos of the fridge contents with my cell phone, so I can check it while shopping.
My Mom was raised in eastern New Mexico and they must have pickled everything....because she did...never threw out dill pickle juice, always saved it "just in case"...we had a wide variety of things to choose from,corn,beets,cauliflower,carrots...everything that had graced our dinner table was a possible "pickled" item....and she was great about not forcing us to eat any of it....in fact she never shared her pickled beets.....great memories....
I use it for cooking . If i make a tomato sauce, or fake meat sauce ( I'm vegan ) , i use it in my base stir fry with the rest of ingredients. It gives it a real nice flavor. If u have more left...just drink it! Cheers!!
Plan your menus before shopping tends to save us from throwing food away. I also try to bulk cook and spend a day making sauce, soups, etc. With food in the freezer we are not tempted to order out or eat out when we don't feel like cooking. I love using mason jars for food storage.
I put my grapes in one of those special produce storage containers. Not sure what they're called exactly, but they ventilated and there's a space at the bottom for moisture collect away from the fruit. It definitely makes a difference in how long they keep.
Hi, Melissa i love your all videos and learned so many things and tips so far from your videos. My hack for storing coriander and mint is to store in air tight container with an egg. They fresh upto 3 weeks. And my biggest challenge for storing food was lettuce but i got the tip from your video now :D Thanks to you :) Stay happy. Bye❤️
I'm curious how it works also. I'll have to give a heads up to my adult daughter bc she's very allergic to eggs & would react to the herbs stored with an egg.
I prep my kale and just store it in a salad bowl with a bees wax wrap on top, my kale stays good for more than a week... If it lasts that long. We don't have a lot of food waste because I only buy what we can eat in a week, at it's for perishables. Most of our food waste is from my toddlers doing what toddlers do best, making messes at meal times 😅
For berries and things like spinach, I have these containers from Rubbermaid that were a complete game changer. They are called freshwork containers and they truly work wonders! Especially for strawberries!
I am convinced that I am the Truman show of TH-cam. Washing the pots pans and bowls from the food I just threw away. Yes. Bring the full video thing. BTW...got an email about the sale early today. Bought two. 👍
You asked about tips for the fridge and freezer, that would be great. Also I put my grapes and salad in stay fresh containers.it does help .what do you think of these? Thank you for all the tips ,better than watching tv that’s for sure .keep up the good work.🥰
Put marshmallows in my brown sugar to keep it from getting hard. Add a stick of wrapped spearmint or peppermint gum to my dry pasta container or you can add mint leaves also to keep bugs out
Thanks for these great tips. I freeze my cheese to keep it longer. Veggies are steamed and then frozen. Even fruits. That way we hardly throw out anything
Not a fridge storage item, but we have a lidded basket we use to store potatoes, onions, and garlic. Keeps them in the dark, is breathable, but doesn't let in too much moisture.
I simply your channel.. I have watching older videos every day. Must say your videos are motivating and inspires to keep your home organised. Just to add I am your admirer from India.. Lots of love ❤️❤️
Yes to fridge video also is there anything else you can store in the crisper draws I usually cut up my fruits and veggies can you store anything else in them other then meat and cheese
I use tupperware for storage. Always get 2-3 times longer out of stuff. As for a single person, if you find a special on a roast or even just chicken, making a bulk amount and freezing it in portion sizes works well.
If you wrap celery in tinfoil it lasts longer. Plus your ice cube tray idea would work well for tomato paste. I’ve been using freezer baggies for that. You usually only use a tbsp. or two at a time, and then you have all this tomato paste left over.
My mom put in the freezer parsley and dill also....she washes them , chops them and put them in zip lock bags ....although are frizzed they can be used in cooking soups or sauces ...keeping in mind the extra water they have... She does the same for leaks, carrots, fresh onions....Sometimes I wonder If we have bigger freezer what else she could put there.....!!!!!
Thank You again on a good video. We are a home of two now so it is hard to down size on cooking. I have now a Vac pack machine and it is a miracle and worth every penny it cost. I buy the already bags to use also. Yes a video on the refrigerator and freezer (next on by list to get) would be nice to see. Gas stove cleaning too would be priceless. My big nemesis is bananas browning before finishing them and nats or fruit flys, plus avocados left over from breakfast, would like to use the other half the next day for breakfast again.
We are in a senior apt with a very small fridge & freezer area, with only one overall temp control. Tips to enhance storage space? how to get better temp control over the small areas we have? The appliances come with the apt, so we can’t change the situation.
I wish the sale could go on for longer :( we only get paid once a month and i could only purchase next month. But I'm on the mailing alerts so I shall wait. Thanks for the tips.
I put a big marshmallow in my brown sugar and stays good. My white sugar stay in it's bag. Lettuce and celery I rinse and store with paper towels. My celery lasts a long time.
Sausages, ham, salami etc. will last you three times longer if you remove them from the vinyl package and transfer them to glass container ^.^ Also I heard that sugar stays good if you keep a marshmallow in the container, but I haven’t tried that one yet.
I have a chalkboard magnet where I list all my leftovers. Then I know what I have to create a ‘bowl’ at the end of the week. I’m also a freak with the paper towels in my fridge drawers, LOL!
Oh, I'm new to trying fresh veggies, organic. Buying online every two wks. so I'm my 3rd order and yes, I've thrown out some food. So, here i am on youtube doing research and I just posted on a video dated 2016 regarding storing bread. Yes, I'm old enough to remember tin bread boxes. Guess, micro-waves work, though I do a lot of reheating so... "oh you kids these days!" : )
The hardest lesson I've learned is how to shop for one person. How to buy just ONE apple, ONE banana...etc etc. After shopping for a family for most of my life learning to be an empty nester has been quite the project. I use that icecube tray trick A LOT, it keeps me from wasting leftover ingredients.
Take a picture of your fridge, freezer, and/or pantry before going food shopping, if you’re in a rush and no time for inventory.
Brie B great tip

@@choux8372 Spread it out on a tray to freeze it, like she did in the video with berries.

I use ice cube trays for leftover tomato paste and for spinach that I put in the blender with a little water and then freeze to use later!
I felt sorry for that lone spinach leaf left out all by itself 😭 6:49

Ok good idea but I thought store bought jars were not always freezer safe (only mason brand.) Could melissa clarify?:)
I have gotten better about food waste. Thanks to your advise and that of others. However, I still need to work on it.
Just grabbed this to binge as I cleaned, and THIS was there! 😬 Okay...will start HERE...
Yes I would love a video about inner workings of fridge and freezer. Thank you!
I love that you're dressed to the 9's and wearing slippers! Loved it! Thanks for the smile and another amazing video! ❤

As for a single person, if you find a special on a roast or even just chicken, making a bulk amount and freezing it in portion sizes works well.
Yes, frig and freezer video. Great idea!
Great video. Yes please a fridge/freezer full tips video.
If you wrap celery in tinfoil it lasts longer. Plus your ice cube tray idea would work well for tomato paste. I’ve been using freezer baggies for that. You usually only use a tbsp. or two at a time, and then you have all this tomato paste left over.
Please may you do a fridge video , thank you so much for all the amazing tips.
Yes.....I would like to know more about using my refrigerator. Some great tips here....thanks.😍
I always put a heel from a loaf of bread on top of my brown sugar and it keeps it perfectly soft!
Thank you for the video I would like to know if you know the best way to keep mushrooms, as I think they only last a few days . Thank you
I vote for this topic, too!
JulzMama Store mushrooms in a brown paper bag.
You should do a team up video with Kinwoven on decorating in a way that's easy to clean
Best
I put a big marshmallow in my brown sugar and stays good. My white sugar stay in it's bag. Lettuce and celery I rinse and store with paper towels. My celery lasts a long time.
Sausages, ham, salami etc. will last you three times longer if you remove them from the vinyl package and transfer them to glass container ^.^ Also I heard that sugar stays good if you keep a marshmallow in the container, but I haven’t tried that one yet.
Thank you! This is so useful.
Thanks for this great tips. I want to know more about freez food like garlic and pesto ... it is possible to freeze individual portions of pesto ?
Yes. Freeze it in icecube trays or pat it flat in a ziplock bag and freeze it. Then you can just break off as much as you want
@@cassieoz1702 wow ! Thank you very much👍i wil do it this week

Extra wine .? 😀😀😀. Seriously...yes yes to the refrigerator and freezer videos !
I'm a first time watcher on your channel and love it! Great tips! I especially like the one about spinach! No more slimy spinach for me!
I have a chalkboard magnet where I list all my leftovers. Then I know what I have to create a ‘bowl’ at the end of the week. I’m also a freak with the paper towels in my fridge drawers, LOL!
Yessssssss love the fridge video idea and where to store stuffffff!!!! Love u guys follow you since 2014!!!!
Great idea for a video! So is the know your fridge better!
