While I'm not crazy about CSX as a railroad, I do think they have some of the coolest spec locomotives. I love how the ES44AH and CW44AH have GE's "steerable" trucks and HTE / high tractive effort. That put with GE AC traction makes a fine unit.
He has a valid point. Its like those fricken yellow lights on highway maintenance vehicles, every body uses the yellow flashing lights now and now no one takes any notice of them!
Aw yeah! Personally, I don't really enjoy seeing GEVO's from the outside (not a fan of the sound of 4-stroke V12's or the blah GE body design), but from the inside that's completely beast, and comfortable too (it looks like)!
I love this loco... I guess all engineers around america agreed, i remembered when the dash-9 came out it looked like the best modern loco that would replace the sd's or gp's but i always hated the controls change i've never had the chance to be an engineer things happen, but i can tell that im not an idiot when i dreemed long time ago that i wanted the look of the dash with the controls of the sd's tada!!! Welcome the ES's.
In my opinion nothing beats a dash 9 wide cab especially Norfolk southern they look great and oh have the best sounding horns love to hear them especially going away from you
Rod Williams is quite an authority when it comes to locomotives, especially the old EDM's. When you come down to Oz, pop round to Cowan Bank for some real action. You'll love it.
I actually kinda agree with you. You are so right, people tune it out because they hear it so much. Same with, like someone else said, yellow flashing lights on the highway. We see it so much we dont care anymore. Ive seen it so many times, blowing the horn, nobody cares.
@CSX2665 that must be why quiet zones are being introduced in some areas. I'll say it again. The more you hear it the less notice you take of it because it becomes every day background noise.
I am on track (get it?) to become an engineer for Amtrak. I agree with what Rod Williams said "blow it when it's needed and it might get heeded". I don't think I'll have a choice once I get into the seat. In the middle of the night when there's no one around it just seems senseless but rules are rules and if I want to keep my job so be it.
I know I'm a "little late" in commenting but hope you read this. I read a comment by a long time railroader about the mandatory rules, like blowing for every grade crossing even "if no one is around." He said that "each and every rule is written in blood," meaning the rule was written because someone was killed. I'm a railFAN, not a railroader but when the rules make sense to a "know nothing" old sailor like me then I recommend blowing the horn. Our "rulebooks" were written for much the same reason.
You have a point, but sometimes if you don't blow the horn, idiots will thinks there is no train coming and just drive around the gates and wind up getting themselves killed.
I drove locomotives for 35 years so I must be dumb. None of you get it do you. The more you sound that horn the less effective it becomes. People start tuning it out as background noise and that 's when they get hit. If we only used it when it was clearly required it would be far more effective. I know that it's too hard for most of you to grasp so keep telling me I'm an idiot, I'll live with it.
@CSX2665 I've only been in 2 of those lol.... the sports cars of locomotives are SD70AC's, they feel like they weigh 5 tons when they weigh over 400K pounds. (also they are the only locomotive I know of that have odometers)
@MrCraig1930 Ok. I was just making sure lol. I do know what you mean though as EMD is famous for the standard cab control stands. Thats why I love Norfolk Southerns GEs. They have EMD style stands in them. Even their new GEVOs have em. I have applied with them and hopefully I get the job.
I like the sound of the horn air valve, since it's electronic and the fake handle (acting like a button). Is there a small delay between when you engage the horn and it starts emitting and it's late to come off too? Maybe something with the airline going to the horns. PS: i got train horns on my Honda Civic.
@Rocketboy1950 Well The Federal Railroad Adminsitrated Made This A Federal Rule Because So Much Had Been Killed From Trains And Since So Much Had Been Killed It Had Become A Rule To Sound The Horn Four Times At A Cross. 2 Loud Horns And One Short Horn Than One Loud One.
I have a Choo Choo Vision Train Camera to go with my Trackmaster Talking Edward. It’s a nice CSX ES44AH in Cab sound which I recorded the audio and make the Trackmaster train Cab Ride video on iMovie.
Hate to "toot our own horn" but in the United States, trains are not as commonly used as in England, or anywhere in Europe really.. two long blasts a short blast and a final long blast is required at all US grade level crossings EXCEPT areas that are designated "quiet zones", as regulated by state and local gov't. Our trains are bigger and run on more horsepower and are harder to stop than British trains. In the US our trains are loud and proud.. If you dont like US trains... dont watch them!!
As also a engineer horn blowing it's the rule. I'm a Gevo man but don't get me wrong love I love EMDs too but when we first got the Gevo's oh boy. Unlike the Dash 9s and Ac44 the Gevo's came with the convention controlled stand not the desktop. The desktop controls rattled too much but that sound of the Gevo's is a sound like no other GE. When I do blow the horn the Gevo's has a awesome sound but I don't get carried away with it. To you non railroaders that horn that sit on top of locomotive is not there to look cool it's their to save lives even though people still get hit or kill but look at the ones who didn't because I and fellow engineers laid on that horn.
Don't be ridiculous. We blow the horn for exactly the same reasons that you do and in most places it's once about 400 yards from the crossing and once again before the crossing. And if the bloody horn is so effective why are there so many accidents ... because it's background noise that gets heard too often and then gets tuned out like any noise that you get used to hearing.
I wonder if there is anyway to actually go up in the cab of a CSX here in Florida. Bucket list item of mine. Can an engineer do this ? Or is it a huge no no
@MrCraig1930 well, I've heard that a lot of locomotive engineers and brakeman are retiring so they are hiring. That was something I heard a few yrs ago though.
@WhiskeyCentral and of course now you don't have any level crossing accidents any more.........my poiny being that you still do so the whistle/horn has proven to be useless and if as I pointed out was used sparingly would be more effective.
I agree with the safety factor but he's right. America is way over the top with horns at grade crossings. People get so dam used to it they take no notice of it! Its human nature dude, the more you hear or see something, the less notice you take of it.
Let's begin with I love US trains I just think your horn rule is useless. Constant train horns makes them background noise, If the only time they were used was in time of real need they might be heeded more. Ergo, less accidents. Don't tell me about stopping trains, I drove them for 35 years. I'm not British I'm Australian and sorry but with one exception the longest, heaviest trains in the world are right here in Australia. British freight may not be big but it's usually very fast.
The rumble of a GE loco sound great in the cab, but one thing I cannot get over: I could barely stand the blasts of that loud, annoying, and severely discordant K5HL on a whole trip. I wish there was a K5LA up there. I wish the stupid and totally worthless FRA regulations never existed, because damn did they really destroy decent-sounding horns. But I'll quite my bitching and give credit where it's due... seriously great video though. I love the cab night shots.
Rod Williams is dha Oprah Winfrey of locomotives Down Under. Check out TH-cam user Rocketboy1950. He's rockin some damn sexy Oz locos. These things are dirty, noisy, arrogant and stink. But, hot damn they are good.

Whoa! Loving the ride in the lead engine. Thanks for this perspective. It is very eyeopening.
Nice cab the CSX ES44AH has a good cab and the horn on this locomotive sounds great. Great vid!
He has a valid point. Its like those fricken yellow lights on highway maintenance vehicles, every body uses the yellow flashing lights now and now no one takes any notice of them!
STUNNING
Gotta love an ES44AH with CSX spec
Nice videography 👍
What a beautiful horn!
i m from India.. still i love this horn...
typical EMD horn...
drove BNSF in MSTS...
Aw yeah!
Personally, I don't really enjoy seeing GEVO's from the outside (not a fan of the sound of 4-stroke V12's or the blah GE body design), but from the inside that's completely beast, and comfortable too (it looks like)!

Nice angles. I like the way you filmed the engineer.
This is great! I agree the GEVOs are the cadillac of locomotives.
Such an awesome video to watch. Thank you for sharing this.
In my opinion nothing beats a dash 9 wide cab especially Norfolk southern they look great and oh have the best sounding horns love to hear them especially going away from you
Just started at Norfolk southern and i definitely like new gevos over the old stuff.
Oilfan27 finna get laid off?
One problem with this video...it was too short! Nicely done...enjoyed it. Thanks!
The sharpest, nicest, stuff like that. And I personally agree.
That looks like a cozy interior
I like the panel it keeps the same style as classic models like GP40 or SD45 but equiped with digital technology
Thats a GE

@CSX2665 actually The AC6000CW would be like the 69 Camaro SS with a big block lol
Its a shame that CSX doesn't allow anyone to record their rides from the Cab. That's sad 😭😭😭
@csxcw44ac actually i think the "cadillac" of locomotives is the AC6000CW
CSX2665 I think it’s the Dash 8
When is this ever going to stop, ITS BECAUSE OF THE BLOODY DRIVERS WHO THINK THEY CAN BEAT THE TRAIN, AND THEY DONT.

It isn't that great, believe me. Pays okay, but zero family life...

That's the reason we got quite zones now because engineers are on it way too much.
Sweet video, by looking at the roadnumber on the screen, I believe that is an ES44AC.
Happy new year RKW Productions

Your in Australia, The US is different from Australia, The US blows horns for a reason, Australia only blows like 1 short horn.
Thanks for helping to prove my point......"a car will run it anyway"
@MrCraig1930 Thank you and I will let you know when I get on. It's not a question of if I get on, it's when. Thanks again.
17KC108 style controller -- COOL!!!

Does the ES44AC/H ride like a Cadillac?
I'm a emd type of guy the SD70ACE is cool locomotive just like the regular cab Sd50 & the SD40-2
Awesome video!
@MrCraig1930 This locomotive is a GE, not a EMD lol.
K5HL?

@Rocketboy1950 pretty much i guess but i love the rumbling sound of a train and the horn...its nice and pleasing
What sub is this
I enjoy the horn it's a Early K5HL

@o00o00ozy Yup these ride pretty nice!
Cool that is your opinion, and i respect that. But the GEVO is the cadillac for me.
The es44ac/ah is indeed the cadillac of all locomotives..
Agreed, they are so cool.
I think the sd40 is to me
The F7A.
The EMD 2011-present SD70ACe, specifically the SD70IAC's that NS currently has on order, is the Cadillac of locomotives to me.
Nope, he's from Australia actually.
is that k6hll horn on bnsf or is it ns or up or kcs
It’s either a Norfolk Southern or CSX because of the flashing ditch lights
I wish that thay can let me ride and honk the horn at the crossing
I disagree. I don't think any country has the monopoly on "stupid" when it comes to trains.
Nice Video.
@coborn35 Australia
Thanks!
No it is ES44DC.
good ole bouncy GE unit..
i ment k5hll horn
