Holy crap, the people who came up with this concept should be given some kind of royalty in the Groove Kingdom. This was a brilliant concept, and St. Petersburg deserves credit for a contest I doubt we'd ever see here in the US!
Great explanation I agree Purdie had the first half.....As it progresses Purdie pretty much has no answer other than subdividing the Purdie shuffle....Tony on the other hand could have sat on that kit for another two hours and gave a different pocket groove each time.....Purdie has a better overall feel for Western musical taste yet I have yet to encounter a drummer who has come up with as many signature pocket grooves as Tony Allen. That said I believe any drummer who wants to be a great musician should learn from these two masters....time and feel not technically impossible chops with no soul Just my two cents
Afrobeat is not play as you want.. you play as Fela want.. u start stop break in and lead out the Choir.. massive 30+ people doing their things.. U SMOKE IGBO
He uses B8pro crash all the time when he plays live... some ppl just like the right sound for what they do... you don't need fucking AAX dark thin crash or crazy shit like that. trust me. iv'e owned the expensive stuff.. expensive Hi hats do matter, and Ride cymbals matter for quality yes... but the rest is all preference. Paiste overall have the best hi hats... and SAbian make the best ride cymbals... Sabian's jojo mayer signature hi hats are similar to the high end dark PAiste hats. but paiste just have more options.
He could probably have whatever he wants. There's usually a drum shop/sponsor supplying them. They all do different things, of course. That's why every drummer has about 4 snares, and 3 rides. And then some, lol. I personally am partial to very bright cymbals that CUT. Although, sometimes you have to be careful. I find those "jellybeans" the Paiste 900 series (are the tones different with each color?? I have bronze). wow. Those'll blow your ears off, lol. Then there's 17 2002 hats, that are a very nice tone. They're light, so sitting on very light Sakae hardware has never been a detriment. Tho I put the AAX, which are really heavy for their size, on light PDP hardware, too. I've yet to break anything. Some of my favorite rides are the 24 Giant Beat. I got it because I LOVED the idea of a huge, thin ride acting as a crash in Art Blakey's "Pensavita." I can't think of another song that's done. And you'll easily get a good 5+ tones out of it with a nice bell. Thicker rides don't play as a crash well, to my ear. How does one clean all this stuff? You'll never guess. The best cleaner, hands-down is friggin Vaseline! Easy to use and work with (doesn't hurt your hands scrubbing away like an idiot), cheap, and EVERYONE has some at home! It won't ruin labels, although I ALWAYS avoid them. (it destroys the value of the cymbals without a logo). Removes dirt and stick marks easily. I think it helps avoid fingerprints, too. I leave a light sheen so they physically can't corrode. Best cleaner I've ever used. I've bought them all. Ask Vic's. as for cost: that depends. I buy based on the sound I want. I don't haunt the price tags til I figure that out. This has never steered me wrong. I was already a singer, so I just took those ears and expanded their capabilities to include drum stuff. I'm the only one who noticed "Oh, Sherrie" by Steve Perry has a hand clap trigger combined with a 10 Paiste signature splash in chorus. :) Some of my favorites are a bent 10 Paiste signature. Makes a great China turned upside down on a crash. The bend shortens the decay by a lot. And a high hat set, badly corroded and unbadged (I didn't do either). I separated them and use one as a small China/crash. It sounds like a trash can lid, but damn if it doesn't work. Since this was on my drum coach's 47 year old Tama Imperialstar (1971), I'm guessing they weren't horribly expensive, either. That kick, filthy POC kick was (when it was gifted to me) with the trashy hats (A shop-vac was literally necessary) is one of my favorite kicks ever. And I have a 26 Ludwig! The dog and I fight over if her bed (she has about 5 of them) is a drum muffle or a dog bed (she goes over, wipes her face on it, and pulls it out during band practice). Throw on an Evan's hydraulic, stuff a pillow in just right (no resonant head, no idea where the hoop and hardware even are, lol), and it's a surprisingly boomy, yet focused and highly responsive kick. For free, on what wasn't that exotic to start with, I'm guessing. jmo. I still kinda stink at drums, but I have great ears and a decent singing voice (started a Journey/Perry tribute). I'm in my awkward teen years on drums.
Yeah, the bass player really didn't give Tony anything to work with. Around the 22 minute mark the bass player just keeps playing the same 5 notes over and over and over. Absolutely terrible.
Winners: Tony & Bernard
Losers: whoever tried to make it a competition

I don't care about the winner/loser here, though. This was a brilliant concept, and St. Petersburg deserves credit for a contest I doubt we'd ever see here in the US!
Great explanation
I agree Purdie had the first half.....As it progresses Purdie pretty much has no answer other than subdividing the Purdie shuffle....Tony on the other hand could have sat on that kit for another two hours and gave a different pocket groove each time.....Purdie has a better overall feel for Western musical taste yet I have yet to encounter a drummer who has come up with as many signature pocket grooves as Tony Allen.
That said I believe any drummer who wants to be a great musician should learn from these two masters....time and feel not technically impossible chops with no soul
Just my two cents
Afrobeat is not play as you want.. you play as Fela want.. u start stop break in and lead out the Choir.. massive 30+ people doing their things.. U SMOKE IGBO
Nice show of differing styles.
They put B8's in front of this man?! What the heck?!
eternallyminded7 ain’t matter what he got, this legend can make anything sound good
He uses B8pro crash all the time when he plays live... some ppl just like the right sound for what they do... you don't need fucking AAX dark thin crash or crazy shit like that. trust me. iv'e owned the expensive stuff.. expensive Hi hats do matter, and Ride cymbals matter for quality yes... but the rest is all preference.
Some of my favorites are a bent 10 Paiste signature.
Tony's bass player kinda sucks tbh.
TissuePaper 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That dude needs to throw away his bass
TissuePaper Tony playing is that great as well
@Mark Gibson At least on the Allen side. They just weren't synced up like Purdy and Co.
Yeah, the bass player really didn't give Tony anything to work with. Around the 22 minute mark the bass player just keeps playing the same 5 notes over and over and over. Absolutely terrible.
6:15 upper right corner Kurt's banging to the groove
These guys are here to make this video from Russia to teach all of the American TH-camr "chops only" drummers how to groove. 😀
Everybody wins
