The AMAZING So Hyang is a 42 years old, South Korean gospel singer and devout Christian. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After being healed by God, she has made it her goal to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She is not motivated by either money or fame, and has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. She also lectures about singing and vocal technique at a university in South Korea. Vocal coaches agree, her technique is FLAWLESS. So Hyang is also the author of several books. She arranged the majority of her performances, including Bridge Over Troubled Water. In my opinion, this is the BEST version of this song to date. Even when she sings in Korean, it is not necessary to understand the language. So Hyang is BRILLIANT at conveying the meaning/message of the song. BTW, she speaks fluent English. I can guarantee, you will be impressed with EVERY So Hyang performance. Her range is RIDICULOUS, making some people question if she is human. :)

Aside from technical mastery, SoHyang singing and the emotions pouring out of her are always 100% genuine.
She has this magical ability to really, I mean really touches your soul.
Heck yeah I think I was just trying to absorb it all. I don’t tend to talk much during the song if I can help it. Before watching the video, I read in your description the note "Prepare for tears!" I knew you've got the right antenna for Sohyang. The tenderness and warmth in her light mix is so disarming and inviting that we can't help but be taken into the world she prepared for us. Of course when she thunders with her legendary belts, we found ourselves surrender to the the comfort and understanding emitting from her voice. When I first saw her in this rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water", I couldn't quite physically match the saying "cry me a river", but I was surrounded by puddle of tears from the performance. Even today, I still get teary-eyed listening to this, and I've heard this performance more than a hundred times.
I thoroughly enjoy how absorbed you were in the performance so that I could relive my initial reaction alongside you once again.

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: th-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/w-d-xo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on TH-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on TH-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to perform eight concerts together at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018.

In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via TH-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, open and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소 향 (So Hyang) has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today and hers is a quite uncommon name. 소 향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So in retrospect her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick!

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang revealed that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and theological treatist, and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do?
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.

I truly believe, any reaction to a So Hyang video, should be done with the LEAST possible amount of
Interruption. Sometimes, due to copyright issues, it is necessary to pause the video frequently.
In my never to be humble opinion, if you have to edit/chop a So Hyang video, for copyright purposes, DON'T BOTHER TO POST IT. The majority of the time, key moments of her performances are deleted, and the song is ruined.
Yeah that’s why I decided to leave the full version I realised that I was originally gonna cut it and it was just all too good I couldn’t edit it. The copyrights don’t really bother me it’s more when it gets blocked I’m more then happy to let the original artist take the money from my video. But this one didn’t get blocked so glad that happened 🙌

So, if you don't want to cut it or pause it, then you may overlay her performance with other photos (maybe sohyang's one) having high transparency. That is the very common way that other TH-camrs use on Sohayng. Typically, you need to be more careful when it was published by KBS and MBC. They are so brutal in copyright. lol.

It's ok to shed tears. Sohyang did that to me all the time. She is an amazing singer.
She is a devoted Christian and gospel singer. She is a cancer survivor. She doesn't go for wealth and fame but to inspire and comfort people with her singing. She turned down overseas contracts offered to her. She rather serves God. We only get to know her when she joined singing competition like I am Singer Legend/ Immortal songs 2 / king of mask singer. Recently, she joined Begin Again Korea is organised by TV station to go on road show during coronavirus period to comfort people. She is a humble person and an angel.

There are a few vocalists that are head and shoulders above most mainstream vocalists from a technical perspective. There is also less "reward" for being technically better so it's not even fair because these "mainstream" people are in no way even competing. So Hyang has one of the best developed Mix-Head/falsetto voices. Her falsetto can hit most of the 6th octave and some 7th octave notes without thinning into a whistle. 3:23 is usually the sound she achieves in falsetto that is impressive because she has control over notes usually reserved for whistle register and the whistle tones are hard for even the best to control consistently.
This makes her hard to compare with vocalists like Mariah Carey who developed whistles over head voice. Whitney Houston is a better parallel to her technique wise. Morissette Amon is the parallel with Mariah Carey. Which is why they prefer to cover one over the other. Both of them can surpass their role-models which is actually the way it's supposed to be. So Hyang, Morissette Amon, Katrina Velarde need more ears on them. They can do things that no one tries anymore, Which might be why power ballads are almost extinct. /shrug
🤔 this maybe true, I think there is definitely an audience there for it. I don’t think you necessarily need to be main stream to be doing stuff like this, so long as they’re making enough to live comfortable enough, who cares about being mainstream or even massively popular, in someways being more of an underground artist although I wouldn’t even necessarily say they are underground but being a smaller artist gives them more room to experiment and try different things that make them happy on their music career and I’m sure the right people that love that will eventually gravitate towards them, I adore all those names you mentioned but I have always had love for power ballads. I'm in the US so my point of view is actually favoring the idea that the "new mainstream" is not worse than the "old Mainstream". The fan comments from those regions *seem* to want the old mainstream to come and pick up their artist into mainstream heaven. Historically the biggest stars came from the West. @@obe22099 absolutely spot on with those points and I definitely can’t argue with that. Yeah I don’t think they need a mainstream at all thank goodness. I feel like now is a really good time for artists and singers the hardest thing is building an audience to support you, but there are certainly people out there willing to give all different kinds of artists there support, I feel like it’s a big shift in music right now. Just gonna have to sit back and see where it all goes. But it’s exciting to watch, but yeah I don’t think artists really need to be mainstream there will always be the Mariahs and the Celines and Arianas and what have you but you don’t need to be at that level of fame to make a living it sounds like hell anyways, I don’t know how they deal with it.

Imho, you should react to all of Sohyang songs in Immortal Song 2 first as well as DMC Festival. Everyone (pun) is a masterpiece. Good thing you reacted Bridge Over Trouble Water from Immortal Song 2 and not from her other performances.
It seemed that you have reacted to a bunch of awesome Filipino singers. Fyi, 4th Impact covered this song (Sohyang version). You might like to react to it since you are a huge fan of 4th Impact. Do not react to 4th Impact live performance as it isn't good compared to their MV.
I’m pretty sure I have already reacted to that and I loved it and now I know why cuz the version they did was this arrangement 😍 yeah most the singers I have reacted to have all been Filipino because they were the audience that first latched onto my channel I’ve only really just started dabbling in other singers from around the world because I want to diversify my channel more and this was a great way to start so many talented singers around the world and I’ve reacted to a heck of a lot of amazing artists through my channel 😊

@@ignatiuschua5268 yeah they don’t always get me in tears they have got me a few times but I still loved their version very much but I’m sure in the title it said something about being Sohyang arrangement maybe with a few changes I could be wrong... just went and checked and it does say that in the title of there video but yeah I cried in this one and not in the 4th but they have gotten me to tear up in performances as well.

Nice reaction. Well, yeah, she does great job on it. Doing it solo, i guess that is about the pinnacle. 4th Impact might surpass this because they have the power of 4 strong voices but the vote has to remain out on that one until they do a live version for a valid comparison. Can't deny So Hyang's talent and creativity in this super arrangement and strong performance! She puts an amazing amount of passion into the performance but somehow does not completely connect to the emotions. If she could really connect to the emotions it would be unbeatable. But my eyes remained dry, so it is missing something. Anyway, great job.
