Another song very much associated with Whitney Houston is "I Have Nothing". Sohyang's version at DMC Festival 2015 shows she can be a vocal beast. There are 2 videos of this stunning live performance, which you should review:
      th-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/w-d-xo.html Broadcast version
      th-cam.com/video/CFtRUSPxcas/w-d-xo.html Camera only on Sohyang
BTW, Whitney's former manager saw this and contacted Oprah Winfrey, who in turn, contacted David Foster. They were all amazed. Foster eventually connected with Sohyang, and they performed 8 shows in 4 days at Blue Note Tokyo (Dec 2018).
Foster cowrote the song, and arranged and produced it for Whitney, who sang it for her role in the movie "The Bodyguard".
Since you have found Begin Again Korea (BAK) and you have mentioned Ella Fitzgerald, consider listening to a short jazz cover by Sohyang.
      th-cam.com/video/_ivvpK3UMlw/w-d-xo.html "Misty" (Begin Again Korea)
At 02:22, you may notice a fellow singer crying. Lee Suhyun duets with Sohyang in "My Favorite Things" and "Flashlight". They produced some nice harmonies.
th-cam.com/video/naOx8Ms2QuQ/w-d-xo.html "My Favorite Things" (Begin Again Korea)
      th-cam.com/video/lSzb6a0PkQU/w-d-xo.html "Flashlight" (Begin Again Korea)
An interesting BAK performance by Sohyang features a studio-produced video of her singing, which isn't live. Watch for the surprise.

Add to it that more than likely English is her second language the clarity of her voice, the emotion, I don't think she deserves the title Korean Mariah Carey because I think she's better than Maria Carey is.

Love this stripped down acoustic version of this iconic song. She performed it outside whilst sitting down with minimal instrumentation and yet it was so easy for her, and she sang the sax part for good measure. Stunning rendition from an incredible vocalist. Thanks so much for coming back to this artist! So Hyang is the best female voice on the planet IMO. She can sing anything, and when she isn't battling the effects of pneumonia (which she was here, actually, not long before), she is the most dynamic singer I've heard in a long life of gravitating toward the female voice. Here she is singing sitting down on a dock in the wind. Absolutely unbelievable. What separates her from the very best technical singers on the planet is her sincerity, her genuine delivery. Evidently this is her very much as a human. What a treasure to hear her in America on TH-cam! Just 'Wow'. Oh, and the young lady who's jaw dropped , was surprised, I think, at So Hyang singing the saxophone solo part from Whitney's version. But all of those young musicians are in awe of her. The lady's name is Lee Hi, and she is an incredible singer in her own right. Her song 'Breathe' (in Korean) is worthy of a reaction, either her version or So Hyang's version of that same song. Both are incredibly emotional.

  • @kbar5821
    @kbar5821 2 ปีที่แล้ว +72

For context, this show normally follows well known singers to different countries in street busking situations. This season was filmed during the pandemic entirely in Korea and this particular performance was at Korea's largest steel mill and was the first after So Hyang joined the cast. The cast is typically a bunch of "juniors" who are relatively young/current stars with at least one "senior" who is a veteran that older folks can easily relate to. This is the first time So Hyang performed after joining the cast mid-season and you can see how in awe the Juniors are as she does things with her voice that they never even thought possible, and for the rest of the season they made similar expressions of wonder. She really is a treasure and I hope she recovers from her current bout of Covid soon as the world is a much better place when she's sharing her gift with the rest of us.

@@toni6053 Well, yes. I guess Whitney's fan base is enough different from Dolly's that they never knew where it came from. Lots of giant hits are like that. the person who wrote it or first performed it gets little credit. "Unchained Melody" is an example. A man named Alex North wrote it for a prison movie. Todd Duncan sang it. Who knew?

Hell yeah, thank you, before even listening yet. A for what it's worth...Misty from begin again korea is even better. It's pure bliss. Just read the comments section on it for an idea. Fate from I am singer is beyond them both and just up there near her top... yeah it's just so cool. Finally Breathe from masked singer, as well as Home just below it, are among her best. There is pure head voice magic in those two. Breathe making recent reactors tear up. Fate half the audience. It's sweet you got another one of hers in with this one but don't stop now, cause the best is still out there. I mean she is so special it's not like there's "too much" lol. Plus those there aren't like some and get a bit too much belt time. You can listen to them again and again. The masked singer show of her performances is full of that. Epic different stuff. Mona Lisa will blow your mind too. And she made rap epic in Day Day.

If you ever get to the Dolly version you kinda have to look at the full version of course but the bit she sings in The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas REALLY drives home the meaning. You really feel it almost like she is holding back tears. Other people may possibly be "better" singers than her but very few singers really make you feel it like she does.

    • @BrianRRenfro

@@BrianRRenfro No, she didn't allow Elvis to cover it because his manager, the crook "Colonel" Tom Parker, insisted that she would have to sign over the rights to the song. Dolly was & is a LOT more savvy than Parker gave her credit for. She allowed Whitney Houston to cover it without signing away her ownership of the copyright & made a literal fortune in royalties.

So Hyang joined these young gifted musicians in 2020 after doing the King of Mask Competition in 2017 (edited comment to correct the dates) while still suffering the effects of pneumonia as part of her goal to bring comfort to those going through difficult times, (as she, herself was doing). She travelled, to this pier on a giant steel mill which could not shut down during the Covid-19 restrictions, so the workers really needed a lift, with a nebulizer to help her sing during her recovery. So her breath control here is even more amazing, and this was the last song of the set they performed for them. I think they performed another set that evening, testing her stamina even more. So, even at less than full strength, So Hyang produced some her most epic performances. We are so fortunate that these performances were recorded so well! Thanks for your heartfelt reaction!

I was just re-watching all your Sohyang reactions, in the order that you made them & as this was your last one I realised just how long ago we last heard this wonderful woman on your channel.
I could name any Sohyang performance, 100% confident she would blow you away again but I have 2 particular performances, that are very different, in mind that I really hope you find the time, with all the other things you have to do, to react to at least one, hopefully both, at some time please, please, please X 1,000,000 🙏
The first performance is again from this ‘Begin again’ series but at a different venue/day. The performance in question is her rendition of Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Misty’ (originally by Johnny Mathis) & I ask for this because I would like your thoughts on yet another genre of music being tackled by Sohyang. I personally think that jazz is really difficult to sing well compared to most other genre’s, it seems to have its own rules!
Secondly, a duet, which you haven’t done before, her performance of ‘wildflower’ with a very nice baritone (I think!!) who’s name I can never remember. It is very different to ‘Misty’, not just in genre, but it is back to the ‘immortal songs’ series for TV with an orchestra etc, as the majority of your previous reactions have been, but bang up to date. I have seen numerous duets involving Sohyang & I’m always amazed that although it’s obvious that she is vocally superior, I never get the feeling that she’s trying to outshine her partner ( who I have also seen performing on their own in most cases) & more like she is enhancing their performance & I would just like your opinion, afterall you’re the expert.
I think the time is now right for you to have another, hopefully 2, new Sohyang reactions on your channel, afterall, surely you can never have too much sohyang in your life & I know for sure that I am not your only subscriber that’s feels as I do.
I wait in hope. Keep up all your good work, you make a difference.

Dolly Parton is a miraculous human. I like to think that Porter Wagoner ultimately realized the significance of having this stunning expression of love and respect written for him. The setting of this performance provides a surreal reflection on the industrial-strength, global impact of Sohyang's utter commitment to the moment. It would have somehow felt different if it had been filmed at Carnegie Hall, or a mega-sporting/entertainment/political event. I'm fascinated by the audience-and their stories-almost as much as by the sublime talent of 김소향, and the love that shines toward her from her fellow performers. I've never seen anything like it!

In the magic department they smoke this one. She has some kinda meh ones that get recommended a lot...power of love... amazing grace....there are just a few I hope don't get in the way of experiencing those three mentioned asap. And Home for that matter. Watch the original singer of Home and how cool that song is and imagine what Sohyang does to it. That's the thing some songs just ain't going to showcase her or as much and I Will Always Love You actually doesn't in a way. Yet it's still as good as it is.
