    I just got a Gotha from my local antique shop, but its be this company called Aurora, in 1/48 scale, and I'm pretty sure the company is out of business. And it gave me the option to paint it like you did yours, but I was like "Nah, I'd have to buy too many colors I'd never use again". But this video is what convinced me to try it out. I hope it works, lol.

    Every video I watch Tom, is just fantastic. Almost jewel like builds.
    One question if I may. When you are almost ready to join the fuselage halves together, there looks to be a plastic film or glaze that goes between the framing.
    What is that?

    • @TomGrigat
      @TomGrigat  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for your kind words ;-) I assume you're talking about the little decals I placed over the inner structure of the fuselage. These are shaped parts of wood decals by "Uschi van der Rosten". The glaze appearance is the water not dried by taking the pictures. For this scale the decals are very useful to create the look ...

      War ein großer Decal-Bogen aus dem man die verschiedenen Flächen ausschneiden musste. Habe mit Alufolie die notwendigen Teile ermittelt und dann auf den Bogen übertragen. Einzeln ausgeschnitten auf die Bauteile aufgebracht - mit viel Softer so bearbeitet, dass sich die Decals an die Oberfläche anschmiegen konnten. Der aktuelle Rodenbausatz hat m.E. die Decals bereits in Form gebracht...

    I have always wanted to build this kit, but I have heard it's pretty challenging. I have done quite a few airplanes (Fokkers, Albatros, Sopwith Camels, even a big R.E. 8) but this kit for some reason has me worried.

    • @TomGrigat
      @TomGrigat  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you're right, there are some difficulties even by mounting the struts which weren't constructed in the right size - f.e. under the engines. But with some sort of tweaking and a lot of patience it worked for me. The rubber thread from Uschi van der Rosten helped a lot. The kit is a bit tricky but worth giving a try...

    Wieder einmal der pure Wahnsinn was du da für ein Kunstwerk geschaffen hast. Sei es Videotechnisch oder Modellbautechnisch.
    Das die bunten Flecken Decals sind, wurde ja schon in einem anderen Kommentar beantwortet. Trotzdem stelle ich mir das als sehr aufwendig vor. Das müssen ja hunderte gewesen sein ;-)
    Eine Frage hätte ich aber noch: Was hast du da im inneren verklebt, was dann wie Holz aussieht? War das eine Folie, die dann später mit einem Wash behandelt wird?

    • @TomGrigat

      Sorry zammpie, hab ich erst jetzt gesehen: es sind Decals von Uschi van der Rosten, die eben das Holzdecor simulieren.

    I'm new to model making and building this, how do I get those wing supports to stay straight while drying and not fall over?

    • @TomGrigat
      @TomGrigat  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nathan Radich Best you place the aircraft head down over a box with the front edges of the bottom wings fixed in the right position on the box rim. There you have a guide for positioning the upper wing after mounting the struts on the bottom wing. It's a good idea doing the mounting procedure when the struts are still a little flexible and not totally fixed. After placing the parts and gluing give it enough time to be fixed. Then start the rigging process - if you're totally new regarding the rigging I recommend not to start with such a complex structure like the Gotha has. I personally had lots of problems with this bird although was familiar with rigging purposes...

      The camouflage is called the lozenge pattern present on German WW1 aircraft. It can be painted but it's a nightmare to do so.

      +Tom Grigat I double checked with the original Five Armies mp3 and those sounds aren't there. I recognize those as audio compression glitches because Sony Vegas gave me trouble depending on the compression settings or the format I used. Also converting a video game OST from flac to mp3, the same thing happened.

    • @TomGrigat
      @TomGrigat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Es befand sich ein großer Muster-Decalbogen im kit, der auf die Größe der Einzelteile zugeschnitten werden musste. Das war die eigentliche Arbeit. Der Rest war Wasser und Decalsofter. Ich war sehr froh das Muster nicht malen zu müssen...

    How did you accomplish lozenge camo?

    • @TomGrigat
      @TomGrigat  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roden delivered two sheets of full printed lozenge decals with the kit. I had to detect the shapes of the different parts. For this procedure I used alu foil to get the needed shape by pressing it at the edges. Than I fixed it over the decal sheet and cut it with scissors. At last I fixed the decals as usual and put a lot of softener on it to get the needed surface. But I think Roden has changed their decal set: the decals are already in the needed shape now. So the "alu-thing" is not necessary any more... ;-)

    • @emi9294

    How do you even create that camouflage design on the plane?

    • @TomGrigat
      @TomGrigat  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The lozenge camouflage is cut out of a preprinted decal sheet. I worked with an older kit were I had to cut out the needed shapes by myself. I think the current Roden kits are supportet with already shaped decals. With a lot of softener, the mounting works very well ;-)

    • @lukebremner1959
      @lukebremner1959 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great! Im glad I don't have to airbrush that whole design! What kind of softener would you recommend?

    • @TomGrigat
      @TomGrigat  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally use Mr. Mark Softer from Mr. Hobby. But I think the brand isn't that relevant - you have to test which suits you best regarding the specific formula. Some of the softener products are bit more aggressive than others... You have to test it before anyway.

    Sir i take my hat off to you. I am close to throwing it out the window. First i made the mistake of deciding to remove the piece as instructed. Stupid of me. The piece given is double in thickness so items dont fit. Instructions (step 13) are wrong for certain pieces. Looked at your video and in step 14 are correct. Piece for feet of pilot is big and does not allow steering bar to be placed correctly. Steering too big if placed straight plus since replacement too thick another problem..... My God. I build ships and never had so many problems. I also noticed that you did not cut part of the lower wings but you placed the engines on top. Mine is the gotha iv box
