To all surf fishermen!! #1 tip for better distance is to just use LIGHT LINE. 10 lb braid is PLENTY for a 5/8 oz lucky craft or whatever plug you are using, up to about an ounce. I know it seems scary to fling your precious lures out on such light line but as long as you use line that has a true LB test rating you will completely fine. I've landed fish up to #30 on 10lb braid so it is completely sufficient for most striped bass and any size surfperch you could ever hope to hook in to. Enough ranting for now, tight lines everyone!

Wouldn't try it in a howling wind,at night or false dawn and twilight.Do as you please however.
Have you ever tried pulling with the bottom hand instead of pushing with the top hand? Your right/top hand being the fulcrum and the rod becomes a lever when you pull with bottom/left hand. I am 60 years old and if I come over the top like you appear to be doing, my arm will start to hurt rather quickly. The rod tip moves faster with less effort using the rod as a lever.

Imagine a swivel point between both hands, the axle of the casting action.
That is how I look at it.
I sometimes practice casting without a reel on a rod, if I don't go fishing for a time. Also with only casting arm movements.
I find it keeps me used to it, muscle memory is what I've heard people say of things,!
Plenty of practice and one will feel more confident when going fishing,!
The stance is important too, both feet on the sand or ground from start to completion of casts,!

I need a new rod, old one broke, I fish walleyes ,most are 5 lbs. or less, how long would you recommend for boat casting in Minnesota, lures up to 3/4 oz, thanks and enjoy your channel, except the sharks,you wouldn't catch me out there lol
I am new to fishing but I noticed u opened the bail arm, once u throw the bait wouldn't the line all come undone??

🎣 if you overfull the grinder reel spool, up to the rim, then the line flowing out as you cast will pull a lot of line coils off the spool, making a bunch,! ...
He was casting with a lure, usually a weight is not required, but a sliding sinker can be used on the main line, to cast further, 🎣

best way to cast out far... use a *Tall long cast 35mm- 45mm shallow spool reels " Long Cast Surf reels" that has slow oscillation when retrieving as well .......

I usually do a pretty long leader using the fg knot that goes inside the guides.. is that gunna shorten my cast ?
How far did you cast with your setup on average? Any tips on reading the water would be good. There isn't very many easy to understand videos on how to read where there are trenches in the water. If you use a fish finder on your kayak a video on how to read that or technique to find fishing spots would be helpful all the videos I see shows what fish look like on a fish finder but not really how to read the bottom and what to look for when out on the water.

Thanks, these are really good tips, (letting some line out at the tip, using the rod fspring and whipping the rod. I could never cast very far. I've been fishing as a kid and was never taught how to fish. My uncles were really good fishermen and had boats, (they were poor and my granfatherhad a boat and was a fisherman). Too bad I get seasick, (3 for 3 times, although I do surf, with no problems). They also used conventional reels. I am now picking it up again, (I'm 67, post covid and retiring and live in Hawaii) I want to downsize and trying to live off the land and sea, (being a vegan/pescatarian helps. I got a free Kayak, and will look at your other videos!

Umm, no, not exactly. "Thumper" overhead casts will never allow long distances; lots of wasted energy that never gets into the rod, line and payload. Revolving spool reels will render the longest casting distance, but spinners can be made to gain distance as well. Most rod payload ratings are "generous" - do not rely on the labeled rod info! - and each rod will probably have a very narrow payload "sweet spot" that can only be discovered with testing weights over grass first. Longer rods will allow more line to hang off the rod tip prior to casting, which in turn will allow longer casting distance *IF* a *GOOD* casting technique is employed, no matter if the reel is a spinner or revolver. It's *ALL* about casting technique! Read that again. That's numero uno for really long casts. After that it's about the rod, then the reel and line. A proper OTG (off the ground cast) is the best and easiest cast type to learn and accomplish first, and can add 25 to 50 yards to any current overhead "thumper" cast that wastes energy and distance. I would highly recommend viewing Tommy Farmer and John Holden youtube videos ... and ... Practice!
Rod ratings are for loading the rod to get the proper action out them an over loaded rod will eventually break. I broke a ($39.99) 9' 4 -20 lbs Ugly stik like this, because it's lure rating was only up 5/8ths of an once. I was using a two once weight on it. On the pole itself it does not have a lure rating, only their website shows the lure rating for their GX2 rods. I have much cheaper ($14.99) 6' 6" 6-14lbs Diawa rod that regular push 25% past it's 3/4 once weight rating. When I use a 1 once bottom bouncer. I'm just wondering when it will probably crack or break from it.
Maybe try lighter braid to your mono leader using an fg knot or another connection. Attach your lure to your mono via a swivel and split ring connection.

So at 3:16 when you hold the line with your finger, I’m having an issue where the line gets caught on my finger/Slices my finger when I cast. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong because the line does in fact go far but I keep getting my finger with the line. Any help on what I’m doing wrong?
🎣 I hope by now you have fitted a casting trigger on your rod, opposite of spool, out to the side a little, in position, for your (front) finger to grip onto,!
They help with casting and protect the finger.
Or a finger glove can help too, 🎣

When you cast is the non dominant hand pushing down or is it more the dominant hand? Also how can I apply this to casting crab snares? That’s my weak spot. Thanks DH
Use the dominant hand below the reel, lock your elbow in place for entire cast.. Non-dominant had is at end of rod, and when are casting ..non-dominant is pulling down sharp and hard as you need to, for the distance needed. Will work same for crab snares, just tape or protect finger at bail.
Thanks for the tips, wondering if you have heard this but I heard that when you are catching fish and releasing them that upon release the fish lets out a chemical marker warning the other fish to either not bite, or swim away fron the area, what do you think or what have if anything have you heard of this? That is something that is very overlooked when it comes to distance casting, how much line you have hanging from the rod tip. With at least two feet of line hanging you reduce the startup speed of the spool when using a baitcaster or conventional reel. This leads to a reduced chance of backlashes and of course longer distance casts. Tight lines out there!
Opposite for me. I struggle badly to cast with that much line loose. I never have more than like 4 inches of line hanging
Hey Die Hard, question bro. My casts come out hot, then baloon and the just die out. Does that mean I'm releasing too early or it's too windy. I ended up releasing passed 90° and it comes out like a bullet (But a bit farther). Thx man
Cant answer for him but I learned the casting motion by pulling down on the left hand which leads up the rod, meaning the tip is flexing and not moving as much when you start the cast. This comes from starting a little slower and increasing speed up to the point of release. I think your cast is more of a flick by either your wrists or starting too quick. Try starting slower and feel for the rod getting heavy in your first half of the cast motion. You will know it when you find it but does take some practice. I had an advantage from learning golf before casting, similar concepts.

@@Ronsgongolfing , yes, if you hear in the video, he gets that swoosh and maybe if he could post a slow motion you can see how the rod loads just like a golf club does.

How about a vid on swapping out trebles on those tiny split rings. I have shakey hands and bad eyesight, so it takes me 30-45 min to swap 1 hook. Very frustrating getting old. Thanks

How about a video on reel maintenance .I recently started fishing again after about 14 years of absence and one of my reels is really hard to crank so i just bought another one but i would like to get my oldie but goodie back in the game again!
Can be tricky as each has a little bit of difference to take apart/assemble. Main thing is once home from beach Rinse that thing reel and rod with hose/clean water. Towel drying is ok but not necessary...dry cool and no sunlight is main concern. Might even want to protect rod with a bit of car wax.
