The Hazy Legalization of Marijuana in Thailand

  • On June 9, Thailand became the first country in Asia-and only the third in the world, after Canada and Uruguay-to decriminalize cannabis nationwide. The Thai government is pushing for marijuana to become the new cash crop but has insisted that it was not legalizing recreational pot use, However, people like Chokwan “Kitty” Chopaka, a longtime cannabis advocate, who runs a shop in central Bangkok selling cannabis buds and gummies, say the reality is different.
Thailand’s frenzied weed free-for-all has met growing pushback and the lack of clarity in current regulations leaves many businesses and growers unable to plan their next moves. It will also take time for Thai weed producers to become competitive in the global cannabis trade when it comes to quality and pricing.

I have lived in Thailand for about 18 years and what seems to be the biggest problem (again) with the "legalization" of cannabis is the government does not speak with one unified voice, more like many different officials at national, provincial, municipal, district and even down to village level repeatedly contradicting one another, so there is no crystal clear set of policies and regulations. So you might buy a bag of weed in Bangkok and then go to another part of the country and get busted for possession of whatever amount and/or potency. As the title of this video says it's still very hazy.

The contemporary Thai prices - for weed with a decent kick - are absurd (500-800 baht a freakin' gram) especially when seen in the light of the cost in the 70s and 80s of so-called 'Buddha sticks' from the Northeast (some of the finest herb ever): off the street a single stick [weighing anything between 1 and a half to 3 grams] would generally cost you 20 baht (then the equivalent of US$1), and sometimes 15 (in bulk less again of course). Even taking inflation into account the prices charged in Thai 'dispensaries' are totally OTT. Most of this stuff is hydro under lights gear - requiring some serious capital investment Hopefully the situation will change for the better when the outdoor crops (presently being grown nationwide by countless individuals) are ready for harvest in late October - November. There should be a massive glut that should have the authorities scratching their heads wondering where do we go now?
Meanwhile in Australia the price of good shit has remained pretty constant for something like 30 years - roughly 250 baht a gram. That should be the absolute maximum price in Thailand.
And finally, one of the biggest upsides of the 'changes' underway is that the stinky rubbish compressed stuff (from Laos I believe) - around since the 90s - should have no further place in the market.

Trichome development which we use to make concentrated oils separated from the herb plant which is the medicinal part is far more superior and can be controlled much easier using an indoor system . 2. It takes only 60 days of flowering stage to complete and mature for harvest compared to several months. 3. Water usage . It takes only a 1/10 of the water compared to outdoor grows . 3. Security . Plants indoor are locked up in safe and secure setting and not outside for thieves to see . 4. When plants get sick and they do . I’m an indoor setting you able to manage the plants and treat them for sickness and get a much faster response from a plant .

I am currently in Bangkok and a longtime stoner. Ironically I quit smoking weed a month before I came here because I was afraid of the drug laws here. By strange coincidence I then found out that it had just been legalized here. Too late, I already quit and my lungs feel better. When I looked into it however I realized that they are charging $25 a gram and $60 an eighth. These are ridiculous prices similar to 1995 in Ca, USA. In the states when it was legalized we expected prices to go down, however predatory capitalist entities immediately and still charge these ridiculous prices. So it is very sad and counterproductive that Thailand immediately started off with super expensive California style high prices. Get it together more, Thailand👎

Weed is way too expensive in Thailand for what it's actually worth. A gram should be around 100 baht, but its 300+ baht. A minimum wage in Thailand is around 350 baht per DAY (8hours). Labor fee is extremely low here and for some reason these foolish sellers set the price way to high especially in Bangkok.

God I’m jealous they must have such epic amazing legendary Thai Sativas. Here in Maryland and Washington DC unfortunately the legal medical cannabis market is flooded with mostly indica dominant strains because of people being braindead and only wanting to smoke whatever crap their favorite rappers are rapping about which is mostly cookies based indica dominants. There is a horrifically disgusting lack of proper Sativa trains. There are very very few sativas and none of them are pure proper sativas. Unlike in Spain or Amsterdam where the majority is real sativas amazing hazes and tropical landrace sativas that take up to 16 weeks to flower. Like Thai landrace for example. Thailand and many parts of Africa have some of the most legendary and epic sativas. You know you have a real and proper Sativa when the high is very similar to psychedelic substances like lsd and they make your heart race and give you reckless amounts of energy and motivation like drinking psychedelic coffee, the psychedelic Trippy Head high from such strains causes deep levels of introspection which make people better humans more empathetic, more understanding, more social and extremely creative, focused, energized and driven. The opposite of indica strains which are the kind of strains that gave cannabis a bad reputation because such strains make people less goal oriented less driven less successful it makes them content with mediocracy the whole lazy stoner stereotype who sits on the couch all day playing video games.
