Sir John Tomlinson is one of the best singers the UK has produced. He's simply the real thing for this material. I only saw him twice in person (Parsifal, and The Minotaur) but his vocal power were totally unforgettable. With a pitch-black tone and incredible resonance his voice alone is a marvel, but his interpretation and stage acting are equally mesmerising. He is simply one of the best of the best. There is something about his voice in person, however, which is difficult to describe. His projection is so good that throughout both operas, when he sang, it sounded like he was sitting next to me. Truly a phenomenal voice and a profoundly skilled performer. I happened to come back to this today and simultaneously looked him up on Wikipedia - it's his birthday today! :D
If ever there was a perfect rendition of this glorious aria this is it. The incomparable Tomlinson in his pomp. Wagner would have been veritably chuffed to hear this version! The Joe Cocker of Wagnerian Opera.

Impressive !!!! Got goose bumps !
Just came from James Morris to this. Tomlinson is much more “honest” in his interpretation. Morris sounds like he’s trying to win a prize.
"Trying to win a prize"
1000% correct 😁😁😁😁
His Hagen is even better
