First I was pretty skeptical about acer and their laptops. After watching x amount reviews I have decide to get it. I own acer predator 17 (one with gtx 980) and after 9 month i couldnt be happier. It runs very smooth and cool. Never had problem with temps or anything else. After few hours of gaming max temp on cpu that I had was around 72C (usualy is around 60-65C. I use it with coolermaster notepal x3) and gpu never went above 58C. Also, it's easy to upgrade, i have put one more 8gb ram in it (bought model with only 8gb) so now I have 16. And I have put better ssd.
Lisa, I just want to say how much I appreciate your reviews and comparisons, and I'd like to draw special attention to how much I appreciate when you finish off with which one you like better or which one you would choose. For people like myself who understand a lot of the differences you explain but don't have as much knowledge, experience, and exposure to so many laptops as someone like yourself does, that final verdict is highly valued. Thank you for your honesty.
You know, for a lady that looks like my second grade teacher, she does the best tech reviews on TH-cam. I've been looking for years for exactly this channel, I just didn't know it would be this channel. Thank you for what y'all do.
i did get the 120hz version. be warned though. the wide angle view screen filter makes lines in the screen. which annoys most people. idk how alienware did their filtering. but with the aorus, even with the TN panel, there is no image quality loss on any steep angle except from below. which no one really looks at on a laptop since below the screen is a keyboard.
Don't feel bad. I got the 120Hz Alienware with a 1080. It lasted 10 days before the motherboard died. I'm now 11 days into a 14 day wait for a replacement motherboard. :(
Kin Fong, the helios is an older model that doesn't offer the same specs as the Predator 17. Generally the Helios is equipped with either the 1050, 960 or 1060 graphics card, which's a generation behind the 1070. That said, the Helios is still a good laptop, just it'll age faster and be limited with its graphical capabilities sooner, then the Predator 15/17. Tip, if you're planning on going the VR HS route, then don't get any computer/laptop with a graphics card weaker then the 1070.
Don't understand all those giving the thumbs down. These reviews are actually some of the rare few that actually can be called reviews... Keep up the good work!
Ended up buying the alienware with a 1070. Mine has a qhd 120hz panel. This thing doesn't even get hot, and is amazing. I definitely recommend this laptop!!
You mention that the Acer has a 4K UHD option with that 95% Adobe RGB coverage, but everywhere only shows the 1080p screen option. The only 4KUHD one I see is last year's 980M, not the new Pascal GPU. Mind linking the one that is this same setup but with 4KUHD and Gsync, preferably with a 7th Gen 7700HQ?
I bought the Alienware 17r4 with the GTX 1060 and couldn't be happier with it. The GPU is good enough to play almost any game at FHD with high or max settings and the chaise is big/thicc enough to allow airflow to cool down everything. Awesome comparison, love your videos!
Happy owner of Alienware R3 15 inches. i7 6820HK overclock is great, from 2,7 to 3,9 ghz works perfectly and temperatures in stress are below 60 degrees. Im very satisfied.
It's impossible only 60 degrees max temperature of CPU. You can tell about max temperature if you enable program Prime95 small ftt mode. You will see around 90 degrees
Ahmad Isa Any problems? I'm thinking about getting it this May. I'm going to get the i7-6700hq and a 1070. I understand that I'm not getting the Kabylake. There's 2 choices for me 1st is a 7700hq with a 1060 or a 6700hq with a 1070 for the same price. I think the 1070 is more worth it, so I'm going with it.
Michael Phillips Tansil yeah, the one i have is 6820 with 1070, I'm a game developer and 3d designer so this is one is very stable and fast that stoped me from thinking of upgrading my desktop, i moved all my work to it, but there are reports of screen bleeding which is something i noticed in my screen but its minor and not bothering me at all, once windows is on it disappears
Ahmad Isa Thanks for replying to my comment. Nice to know you're a 3D designer and game developer. I want to digital art and also play games with the Alienware. I think this is a really nice laptop. I never heard anything about the screen bleeding, but I did hear about the Alienware overheating. I'm pretty sure it's because of the full size desktop GPU. I researched the Alienware for 4 months.
Michael Phillips Tansil been an Alienware R2, R3 and R4 user for years, Haven't had any overheating, the new R4 has an amazing cooling system, maybe it's True in some cases but i doubt it, I'm happy to help, you're welcome
This is a great comparison, thank you. Acer wasn't even on my radar, but now it is. I didn't realize the AW was missing the SD reader. This is a true desktop replacement for me, so having an SD reader is important. There was something else I liked too and didn't like about the AW that I hadn't realized (in addition to the 4 ram slots, wow). I just wish Acer would drop the Transformer motif, but oh well :D
thank you (Lisa Gade) for all your reviews on alienware and other gaming laptop products. Ive watched nearly every review available and i felt like yours were the best (and there are a bunch of great ones out there!). you've been instrumental in helping me pick my 17 r4, i can't wait to see many more of ur reviews !!
Really great well spoken review. Just bought a second hand predator 15 with a 1060 in it for $1200 aud. Love it so far. So we'll built. Highly recommend the predator
I used Apple Computers for now over 20 years and was looking for an upgradable Book that is able to be used for gaming and other things that take use of the built in hardware. For Apple not offering anything like this I decided to look for a gaming laptop with Windows and today I choosed the Predator 17" G9 with 1070 and Intel 7700HQ. It will need one week till I get my Predator and I am really nervous. Your video lets me hope that my decision was the right one, thank you for this and greetings from Germany.
Iv owned both laptops, and got rid of the Alienware and kept the predator. The predator runs every game at about 20 fps more than the Alienware, and the predators keyboard is so so much nicer!
Just sold my Predator 15 have actually replaced with an Alienware 17 R4 haha! Good points of the Predator - Crisp display, runs cool (for a laptop) and offers really good value all round. However, I hated how it looked, so tacky, while it also had the weight and bulk of a baby Elephant. I think Alienware definitely wins the build quality contest, although as a previous owner of an Alienware I will say that I prefer the feel of the Preds keyboard.
I have the Alienware 17R4. Thinking of selling it now. Watching reviews of new laptops and everyone seemed totally unfazed talking about CPU temps hitting 95-100 degrees in benchmarks which just seems normal in newer laptops? I could never remember mine ever getting that hot and so started to wonder if my CPU wasn't pulling the right wattage. But, here, she confirms that these were what temps these systems were running. TDPs seem similar from now to then, what's with all the extra heat!?
Hey Lisa, just want to add that if you purchase from Best Buy you may save a bit, but will sacrifice the on site warranty and will have to ship the unit to Dell for warranty issues. I found this out on my Alienware 17r3 as the first one i purchased was defective.
I ended up getting an MSI, cus I've had bad after sales service with Dell, and the Acer just looks too Gamery imo . Great comparison, and great content as always ! Looking forward to your next video :)
Arman Talwar The Stealth Pro, very nice. I have my eye on this. The thermals have me hesitant however. I sure like everything else it has. Do you like it?
Bob Of All Trades the 17 incher has better thermals than the smaller one . You'll need an hour to set it up, as the speakers are atrocious out of the box, and need to be tweaked to ones liking with the given drivers. You'll have to remove some minor bloat ware also like norton and the steel series engine which aren't needed. The included MSI dragon software is all you need to alter everything . I absolutely love my laptop. Thermals are awesome, (since My ambient temp is 40-45 degrees, on extreme long sessions is see 90 degrees occasionally, but never throttling, and if your ambient temp is 20 degrees or so, you'll never see any 90* temps at all.. ) performance is top notch, looks are stellar.. and overall I don't think I'd have gone for anything else . All ultra 1920x1080 every game ever over 60 FPs easy. Battlefield all ultra 100 plus frames . The 120hz screen makes the experience great too. Let me know f you want to know or ask about anything specific. I'd be glad to help!
Arman Talwar my new 15" R3 Kaby Lake with GTX 1070 CPU has never exceeded 80c playing Witcher 2 and the GPU never went over 63c.... pretty good thermals for a 15" so I would say WRONG!
Hi, is there any chance you could do a review on the IPS version of Alienware 13 r3? There are quite a number of reviews for the OLED version available on different sites but review for the IPS version is almost non-existent. Thank you.
Alienware is more future proof. I bought the Predator and then I realized that the graphics amplifier will make the AW come out on top for future proofing so before I even opened up the Acer I shipped it back and exchanged it for the Alienware. I think Acer should offer some sort of graphics box/amplifier for the gaming line.
I own the last model of the Predator, but have seen the Alienware at the office. The Predator can use more memory, 64GB instead of 32GB, important for me because I run virtualisations on it. The keyboard of the Predator is better. The Alienware has better screen and I particularly like the WHD, which is perfect for this screen size. I also perceive the sound of the Alienware to be better.
I had both the predator and the Alienware... took both back and bought the new Kaby Lake 15" R3 Alienware... with the 120khz screen... the 17" inch laptops are like carrying an illegal Alien on you back!
Hi There Lisa!, could you review the msi ge62vr? i would like to know how good the display and color accuracy on it because right now i'm in needed of a good gaming laptop with great enough color accuracy display for video and photo editing but not sure if the msi ge62vr would make the cut. thanks for the help!
I love my Alienware because I can run (and am currently running) a full sized 1080 FTW (thank God for graphics amplifier) as well as run my Oculus on it
love your channel was wondering how is the backlighting on the keyboard on the predator in comparison to the alienware? ((is there color options for each key? and how is the brightness of the backlighting specifically?)) did not notice that come into play in the review less i accidentally skimmed over it and are the red accents removable to re-paint or just not use at all? honestly do not like the red accents acer seems to go with with everything, wish they offer all black variants instead of the "gamer aesthetic" style
I have an Alienware 17 R1 (R5). I purchased it after the R2 came out so that I could upgrade the graphics card once prices came down and after the warranty ran out. Dell's being a pain about honoring the extended warranty: offering the GTX 980M over the phone as a replacement to the discontinued GTX880M (And good riddance), then retracting that offer because it's "incompatible with my motherboard" and insisting that they have to replace the entire laptop. (I think they don't have modular spare parts and they don't want to admit it). My question: on the Acer, can you still remove the graphics card and CPU to swap with new ones? Or are they permanently integrated (soldered) into the motherboard? That right there will be the deciding factor, for me, on what laptops I look at in the future.
Just returned an Alienware 17R4. Dell came out to replace the screen due to light bleed. The replacement screen was good however it would constantly stutter. Updated bios and all drivers still did not fix it. Best Buy guy said theirs did it as well, but the bios update fixed theirs.
When it comes to screen quality the alienware wins but when it comes to build quality and overclockable gpu and cpu the predator wins... the reason i give the build quality to the predator its because it has excellent thermal performance and it stays cool. Yeah the alienware has carbon fiber ( i think ) but i dont usually look at the design and durability.
I've been browsing around for a new laptop and I've noticed that many now seem to have two hardrives!: a primary solid state hard drive, and a secondary "laser disk" hard drive... can someone explain why this is common these days? I thought "laser disk" storage was on the way out!
untwerf basically solid states are much faster, more efficient and run cooler than standard hard drives. which is why its better to have the computer os installed on the ssd and store all ur stuff on the bigger hard drive. ive had a computer with only a hard drive and one with only an ssd and let me tell you, the difference in speed and efficiency is amazing. hope this helps
Hey, I have this alienware 17. Love it, but when I look up my 17r4 the model i see looks different camera and faceplate, so how do I distinguish the two in my search for replacement parts
Hi Guys, Isn't MSI GT 72 dominator pro better in terms of cooling , affordable price for technology with 1070 and it has G-sync. What are your thoughts
Waiting for this one too. No news on next gen Surface book other than the performance base model which I think uses a 965M. Cant imagine its long before they switch to KabyLake and a 1050 or 1060.
you didn't show the Acer power plug that plugs into the computer on the power cord side, I've heard it janky if it's like other Acer power cords, easily to break because it's too small
So they fixed the Alienware CPU overheating or really hot +92 degrees I read somewhere. I would like to get the Alienware. A Little scared, big money even for a professional thats well emplyeed :p If its not fixed do you know if they hassle for a return within a specified period maybe 30 days?
muhammed yildirim Depends on what you're using it for. This is a comparison, she can't say that Alienware is better or Acer is better. It all depends on what you want, what you need it for and what you're using it for. They're both good, but Alienware has much better build quality than the Acer.
still a bit on the fence as to which one to get, if I were to switch from a Macbook Pro, because Apple has been losing its edge ... been looking for a great comparison like this one, leaning towards the Alienware because you can configure to higher specs
Alien vs Predator
epicmomo Hahaha didn't realize that.
epicmomo Mikasa?
:DDDDDDDDDDD
epicmomo this needs more likes
epicmomo lol omg what a coincidence

i have 1 too but mine is 15 970m running witcher 3 most of the time with stable 60fps gpu max temp is 65C and 5 hours constantly

Thank you Lisa! You're review of Alienware laptops helped me decide on the 17 R4. I love it so far!
I paid $2600 on my aorus x7 with gtx 1070. where the alienware offers gtx 1080 at the exact same price with 120hz screen option. now I feel bad.
Jad Collado
you probably wont tell a difference. unless you are truly looking for it. and there are some exceptions.
docstrange27 I think the 120 Hz will be immediately noticeable. And the 1080 is a decent amount faster, so you'd actually be able to use that 120 Hz
there is a version of the torus x7 to get a 120hz i guess you didn't get that one
i did get the 120hz version. be warned though. the wide angle view screen filter makes lines in the screen. which annoys most people. idk how alienware did their filtering. but with the aorus, even with the TN panel, there is no image quality loss on any steep angle except from below. which no one really looks at on a laptop since below the screen is a keyboard.
Don't feel bad. I got the 120Hz Alienware with a 1080. It lasted 10 days before the motherboard died. I'm now 11 days into a 14 day wait for a replacement motherboard. :(
alien vs predator..
monica geller xD didnt even realize that until u pointed it out
OOOOHHHH MYYYYYY GOOOOOD!!!!
Wait...OHHHHHHHH
Predator always wins. Plus Dell sucks. 😂😂😂😂
XDDDDD
just purchased from Costco the Predator 15 1080p GTX1070 w 32GB Ram 256 SSD + 1TB 5400RPM HDD "on sale" at $1699. felt like a good value.
DH DH where on sale ?
I originally purchased at Costco.com but I dont see they have it any longer
Is it from us or UK?!
Kin Fong, the helios is an older model that doesn't offer the same specs as the Predator 17. Generally the Helios is equipped with either the 1050, 960 or 1060 graphics card, which's a generation behind the 1070.

DH DH is it working fine for you ?
Don't understand all those giving the thumbs down. These reviews are actually some of the rare few that actually can be called reviews... Keep up the good work!
For the Alienware 17 r4, it costs only $25 to upgrade the wifi to killer 1535, not $50
Ended up buying the alienware with a 1070. Mine has a qhd 120hz panel. This thing doesn't even get hot, and is amazing. I definitely recommend this laptop!!
Just ordered mine from Dell Japan today!! 120hz highfive!

but we all know alienware wins

ive always had horrible luck with DELL, i'm really considering the Predator
Really great well spoken review. Just bought a second hand predator 15 with a 1060 in it for $1200 aud. Love it so far. So we'll built. Highly recommend the predator
Liza, pls include time links into video description
Princess Luna yep...
Lot to cover and she did it quickly. I wanted the Acer so was glad she mentioned how noisy the fans are on Alienware as that vetos Alienware
The salesman in me says " No wrinkled shirts!" Otherwise I found you to be knowledgable and enjoyable to listen to. Thank you!

thanks for the video! I went with the i7 gtx 1070 predator and am happy with it. $1499.99 at microcenter currently!
nice... in germany for g5 gtx 1060 u pay 1,600 euros :(

Arman Talwar Which model did you buy?
Bob Of All Trades MSI GS73VR
It has a gtx 1060 though but is less than half as thin and half as heavy with a 120hz screen and an all aluminium body.
Arman Talwar The Stealth Pro, very nice. I have my eye on this. The thermals have me hesitant however. I sure like everything else it has. Do you like it?

Let me know f you want to know or ask about anything specific. I'd be glad to help!
Arman Talwar my new 15" R3 Kaby Lake with GTX 1070 CPU has never exceeded 80c playing Witcher 2 and the GPU never went over 63c.... pretty good thermals for a 15" so I would say WRONG!
Hi, is there any chance you could do a review on the IPS version of Alienware 13 r3? There are quite a number of reviews for the OLED version available on different sites but review for the IPS version is almost non-existent. Thank you.
With the significant Alienware heating and video striation issues, the MSI GT73 emerges as the clear winner in this class.
Awesome review, as always! Do you have a review of the new XPS 15 9650 in the pipeline?
Yes indeed!
Alienware is more future proof. Will you make a video for the temps on the Alienware please
Well done, very informative. I am very happy with my Predator. Though, I have yet to play any games on it. I bought for 3D animation and rendering.
Rooting for alienware, i got this one! The 17 r4
Lisa, your reviews are the only ones I trust.
I love my Alienware because I can run (and am currently running) a full sized 1080 FTW (thank God for graphics amplifier) as well as run my Oculus on it
r really want the predator im a acer fan
soo ? who won just say it !!!
yeah
love your channel
was wondering how is the backlighting on the keyboard on the predator in comparison to the alienware?
((is there color options for each key? and how is the brightness of the backlighting specifically?))
did not notice that come into play in the review less i accidentally skimmed over it
and are the red accents removable to re-paint or just not use at all?
honestly do not like the red accents acer seems to go with with everything, wish they offer all black variants instead of the "gamer aesthetic" style
I want an alienware 13 r3 please
What are the basic differences between MSI GT72vr and MSI GE72MVR?
Both of them are i7 7700k with GTX 1070.
Now let's talk about dells tech support. Avoid like the plague.
The only reason I'm questioning the Acer is because of those sexy lights on the edges of the ailienware
Thank you for making this video it really helped
so here we are which is the best of them?.... in terms of price and quality...
What software do you use to measure the srgb and rgb coverage of the display, and where can I download it? Thanks!
Was waiting for this to happen. Finally!
a question tho, does the aeroblade fan turn around every 3 hours automaticly and does it do it on all laptops that have it?
Hi Lisa, is it still good to buy a used Acer Predator 17 in 2022?
Alienware forever
No no
Predator will eat that alien up in one bite ;()
Just returned an Alienware 17R4. Dell came out to replace the screen due to light bleed. The replacement screen was good however it would constantly stutter. Updated bios and all drivers still did not fix it. Best Buy guy said theirs did it as well, but the bios update fixed theirs.
both look good. What are the brightness ratings for their 4K screens?
SkyKingKona at some point she mentioned a little over 300 nits on both
SkyKingKona The displays are 300 nits, unless you get 120hz on alienware, which is 400 nits
When it comes to screen quality the alienware wins but when it comes to build quality and overclockable gpu and cpu the predator wins... the reason i give the build quality to the predator its because it has excellent thermal performance and it stays cool. Yeah the alienware has carbon fiber ( i think ) but i dont usually look at the design and durability.
are you going to do a giveaway for these
Can I swap (in alienware) the HDD with a SSD by myself?
predator frost core actually has substancial influence on cooling when used on full,
does repasting the cpu and gpu on the predator laptops (in america) void the warranty?
i got mine Alienware with AC 1535 on standard choice :D and also 1440p 120hz Display, but i choose GTX 1060 .. wkekw
Does either laptop support dual external monitors? How come no tech review anywhere answers this question?
Good review. Please review the new Asus G701VI OC Edition with Kaby Lake processor. Thank you.
Is a 6 year old Alien ware laptop still worth buying if it has been refurbished with a new battery
A well done review. Thank you!
I've been browsing around for a new laptop and I've noticed that many now seem to have two hardrives!: a primary solid state hard drive, and a secondary "laser disk" hard drive... can someone explain why this is common these days? I thought "laser disk" storage was on the way out!
untwerf basically solid states are much faster, more efficient and run cooler than standard hard drives. which is why its better to have the computer os installed on the ssd and store all ur stuff on the bigger hard drive. ive had a computer with only a hard drive and one with only an ssd and let me tell you, the difference in speed and efficiency is amazing. hope this helps
untwerf yep what he said, think of SSD as carry on luggage and the HDD as your suit case.
what about the 15 size on the predator ? same specs ? same pros and cons ?
Hey, I have this alienware 17. Love it, but when I look up my 17r4 the model i see looks different camera and faceplate, so how do I distinguish the two in my search for replacement parts
I wonder which one would be better for a game like warframe or battlefield V I'm leaning towards predator tbh but idk
I have the predator17.. so can I just replace the screen to get 4k? Or graphics card will need changing?
hi do you think predator 17 will fit on targus strike backpack? becoz alienware 17 fit but i dunno about predator 17? hope you repy, tnx
could you review the best iron to purchase?
Hi Guys, Isn't MSI GT 72 dominator pro better in terms of cooling , affordable price for technology with 1070 and it has G-sync. What are your thoughts
plz do a video about cheap gaming laptops
100% notafaggot nah bro. We have enough cheap laptop vids.
The best laptop for its price is the acer predator x
If you want cheaper gaming laptop check out the Republic Of Gamers series from Asus.
hey not to be off topic but have ya heard of a release date for the Surface Book 2 & graffics card spec 10 series maybe?
Waiting for this one too. No news on next gen Surface book other than the performance base model which I think uses a 965M. Cant imagine its long before they switch to KabyLake and a 1050 or 1060.
I wish there were 17" ultrabooks -- thin, light, small bezels.
you didn't show the Acer power plug that plugs into the computer on the power cord side, I've heard it janky if it's like other Acer power cords, easily to break because it's too small
It's a big and beefy connector. I can't imagine it breaking easily.
Which one has the faster refresh rate???
Is the New samsung odyssey laptop better ?
So they fixed the Alienware CPU overheating or really hot +92 degrees I read somewhere. I would like to get the Alienware. A Little scared, big money even for a professional thats well emplyeed :p If its not fixed do you know if they hassle for a return within a specified period maybe 30 days?
i have the alienware 17 R5 - works well
Please review 15 inch portable notebooks
as soon as you see a sd rom in the gaming laptop you know you have to pick something else than that
Do a smackdown on MSI GS43VR and Alienware 13 R3
Can you review the Iron you used for your sweatshirt? I am joking Lisa, Thanks for the review, great help
Lol! Alien"ware" VS Predator. Great vid! I personally love my 17 R4, but that Predator does look good. ;)
Finally; Which is better you mean?
muhammed yildirim Depends on what you're using it for. This is a comparison, she can't say that Alienware is better or Acer is better. It all depends on what you want, what you need it for and what you're using it for. They're both good, but Alienware has much better build quality than the Acer.
Hi , is the charger pin same for the both ?
I got one of these for $1300 although it was a rx 570 it was very good
wish you were my mom
The Dark Knight exactly!!
The Dark Knight 😂
But that would mean she would die bruce..
Really:))
still a bit on the fence as to which one to get, if I were to switch from a Macbook Pro, because Apple has been losing its edge ... been looking for a great comparison like this one, leaning towards the Alienware because you can configure to higher specs
which is the best
