@@SpyderTracksThey're very overpriced laptops. And they're not even the best. Asus and Lenovo overtook them in premium flagships. Acer and HP overtook in mid to budget. Nobody buys Alienware anymore.
Old alienware have swapable gpu and ram, so they were more futureproof. This one has soldered everything, and also, it's heavy, so only cons remain... plus that cpu there should be i9 or 12+ cores ryzen. Also, design looks like dell no longer alienware. This is an expensive dell laptop. If you want something better looking, go buy anything else with the exception of MSI. MSI and Dell are only brands that make laptops that look like toys even when those machines cost 2000+. Other's branded gaming laptops look more like business machines, and I personally like that direction, and sales metrics show that I'm not alone...
Is that alienware's OG motto. IDK wtf this dude rambles too much about. Pretty much he said, I dont like the laptop, not the laptop itself is bad. Objectively speking, is bulky heavy and with a below aceptable screen, with not the top notch most cutting edge technology out there. All the other nonsense are thing HE doesn't like. Alienware has always been the wanna be Apple of the windows-gaming world.
I have my Alienware x15 r2 for a year now. I've never been so happy with a laptop before! Don't expect a gaming laptop of any brand to be freeze cool or lightweight.... people don't realize the power these machines have in such a small space 😊
It looks nice and I have an x16 R2, and I always wanted it as a kid, but... It's simply not that special. It's a top laptop, and the cherrymx keyboard is maybe the best keyboard ever, but that's about it.
Same with Dell in general, though apparently even their more recent monitor offerings are a bit crap from a number of reviews I've seen. They used to be my go to for colour accurate stuff with the UltraSharp range but they've been on the decline in the last few years.
Knowing the parent company they probably tweaked either top or bottom, but the mold for the other half was left the same. That bad fitment at 1:44, while minor, is honestly unacceptable at this price point.
@@ctrl_x1770 oh so youre one of those enthusiasts that STANS a title that needs vram or run VR, or a multimonitor racing sim XD....or are you simply an ADVOCATE
@@anhiirr Why are you so adamant at defending literally the richest tech company in the world? What benefit does it bring to you except worse products?
@TheIndulgers dell has been a force in the business world for many years now. Most brands are good, it's just like some models can be better than others in every brand. Dell has had great years and some lean years, but they're still around.
Give all us a favor and don't buy an Alienware, nor a Dell product for that matter. It's time they learn. They deserve more of a downfall than Intel imo
None of us buying Dell, which kinda doesn't matter anyway. Their main customers are those offices, schools, univs, and orgz. They've successfully kept Dell in business for all these years.
@@fajaradi1223Yep. My work laptop is a Dell, along with the majority of my coworkers. Brand new there were issues with it that turned me off spending my own money on a Dell.
I'm going to be the one to disagree here as I expected all the Alienware hate. Thing is I don't think Alienware is as bad as people say it is, I've owned 4 Alienware laptops at this point. I am a tech reviewer (can see my channel) I haven't really had any failures with them. I've had more issues with MSI and Lenovo Legion and Acer Predator than with Alienware. People say it's expensive but it's actually not if you factor in the coupons that Dell gives out all the time. And even the MSRP price sure it's on the pricey side - but no more so than an Asus ROG or a Aorus or a Razer. Razer in fact are the ones that make very overpriced laptops with minimal ports and have even worse thermal issues due to the thinner profile. I have to say my first laptop with an OLED screen was Alienware (Alienware 13 R3), my first laptop with RGB was Alienware (Alienware 15 R3), my first laptop with a mechanical keyboard was Alienware (Alienware m15 R5). So in terms of innovation they've had it going, believe it or not. Literally the only thing Lenovo, Acer and HP have on Alienware is they are cheaper and that's it. Let me know when they get a low profile Cherry MX switches or OLED displays on their laptops. Only ThinkPads have ever been respectable from Lenovo and even then they have gone down in quality since they also made their laptops low profile and took away power bridge features in 2017. Just like everyone else people jump on the hate train when they see Dell and Alienware. When you actually have a laptop collection like me then you can compare against other brands and its not as bad as people think
I think the main problem with Alienware is they say that their computer will have these numbers of CPU or power or whatever they’re talking about at the time. And that those numbers are inflated because it doesn’t ever reach those numbers. So people get mad that they paid extra for Alienware and then I get the full capacity of what they were told they would get.But as far as it breaking down or anything like that, I don’t think it breaks down too often. I’ve had my 17.3 inch with 4K resolution, alien or laptop for I think at least four years and it still works perfect.
But I do deep dive in famous killings on TV. And after reading David McGowan‘s book , “program to *iLL”. Most of these famous cases, the suspect has been framed. And it’s pretty obvious. But I read the comments and all you see is pure hatred towards these people that didn’t even do the crime, and when I try to stand up for them , all these people start to attack me. Just like Scott Peterson. I told people for years that he was innocent. And finally when the innocent project took it. I was vindicated. Because they don’t have the time or the resources to waste on anybody unless they believe they’re 100% innocent.
You ever actually had to repair one of those? It's a fucking nightmare. You would not be telling us that if you actually worked on your own computer and were maintaining the hardware itself. I've had hundreds of systems over the last 20 odd years... The M16 R1 was my first Alienware. And boy do I regret buying that turd. Dead OS and bad RAM right out of the box. Dead mic in the monitor, so new monitor 3 months later. Dead motherboard less than a month after that. Shitty cooling, shitty layout, shitty design overall. There is a special place reserved in the depths of Hell for the sorry bastards that designed it. Dell has really shit the bed with PC design for decades now.
@fadingbeleifs ok and which laptop has been easy to repair? You're just singling out your experience with Alienware but Acer, Lenovo, MSI, Razer, Aorus etc are all a pain to repair too. You can't just say Alienware is bad because of your personal experiences with it. You have to look at the AVERAGE of all the laptop brands
People kept praising their increasingly overpriced and lazily rehashed laptops, while Lenovo Legion and Asus ROG continued to innovate. Alienware is the Apple-equivalent of windows gaming laptops. Now the gap is simply too overwhelming to ignore.
Hard disagree about the cherry MX keyboard, it's my favorite laptop keyboard over decades of buying laptops. The complaint that it makes noise is bewildering...if your use case for a laptop is a quiet setting then don't buy it with the mechanical keyboard option? This has nothing to do with AW brand. I feel any rational buyer will choose the correct keyboard option for themselves.
I used to love Alienware , used to dream of having one back in 2018, I got an area 51m with 9900k in 2021 and upgraded to msi gt77 in 2022, I really appreciated the build quality of my a51m but I hated the Alienware command center
same i had my very first one back in '06-'07 before dell even bought them out. it was called the Area 51 m9750. It was a Game Changer at the time being the first laptop to sport DUAL graphic cards in SLI mode; two '512MB GeForce Go 7950 GTX cards' to be exact. Intel Core Duo 2.33GHz. You could also upgrade the screen from a 1440x900 to a 1600x1200. My setup came with blu-ray dvd player, tv tuner, and RAID 0 config for the 2 drives, 4G of ram(which was highest option/amount you could get lol. the base model only came with 1G of ram and started at $2k which also included a slower processor as well). Bottom line they still cost an arm and leg back before Dell even bought them. But the thing was beaut i remember it having a rubber feel coating all throughout the entire laptop, and who could forget the ribbed top lid that truly set off the "area 51" vibe. If havent googled this laptop its a trip to go back and take a look. It even had touch sensitive buttons across the touch row for things like quick email access, internet, pause/play & forward/back while playing music/videos. 13yr's later i too bought another Area 51m. This time the Area 51m r2 (10900k, 2080Super, 330hz 1080p...) and tbh it was an exceptional desktop replacement i had zero problems. Had it overclocked to run 5.1 all core all day everyday. I have since sold it a year ago and been on the hunt for my next "big" laptop purchase. I like to go all out but every time im ready to pull the trigger i keep deciding to just wait it out longer. I was ready to green light this 18m with a 4080, but that screen really urks me(for the price its just not up to par). I know i know it really istn that big of a deal and even with the 4080 wotn be seeing over 165fps anyways. I was even planning on trying to replace the screen myself with a better panel, but why should i have to do that. Ahh who knows i already typed a novel, prob just wait until summer see whats coming...
"While delivering outstanding gaming performance, compromise on other features". This a Gaming laptop, it's specifically designed for gamers, so if you're looking for a notebook that caters to business, creative, or general consumer needs, you might want to explore other types of laptops tailored for those purposes.
There are laptops with similar performance, better designs, less compromise on QC and cost less. Just because it delivers on gaming doesn't mean you should have the backlight and fan issues he mentioned.
@@38jkv56io-u0ltgranted, with thinner laptops like Zephyrus this means you need to compromise on the performance too. Then again it is meant to be a high power versatile laptop and not a gaming focused machine. So the sacrifice to cooling is probably negligible.
This is alienware's ugliest and shittiest generation of gaming laptops design that they have ever had, their newest gaming desktop design is the same shit. I don't know what the heck is wrong with their designers. Did they get some kind of failed brain surgeries or something. The design just always makes me feel that they belong to the toilet because of round edges and the white color using. You shouldn't combine white and the many round edges using, this combination belongs to the toilet utensils. The design gotta be bold, be sharp, be angular and show that you have some personalities just like the 51mr2, m17r4. You can make some new designs based on these two products and alienware will be alive and kicking again.
I bought a x15 r2 and love it until it started having issues. The fan bearings started to go and when I went to have it repaired I had to deal with their horrible tech support. They had me reinstall windows multiple times check drivers and bios… for a fan bearing. Then when they swapped out the heat sink the speakers started acting up and then I had to go through all the “troubleshooting” steps I listed above again. Then the keyboard lighting went out. Then I ran out of the one year warranty on it sooooo I’m stuck with ticking time bomb of failures because the entire laptop is refurbished components.
@5:45 I have Zephyrus G16 and the vent blowing out to the right side of laptop burns my mouse hand when I game... I literally brought that laptop on 1 trip and I'm considering changing it. Alienware's extra chunk of cooling at the back of the laptop looks like a godsend after actually using a laptop to game.
And I always liked this external back, it just looks more like spaceship. My favorite design was 17 R4 7 years ago. Gaming laptop shouldn't be too slim.
@california3527 Having choices are the best for consumers. Ultrabooks, thin gaming laptops and thick performance gaming laptops. Right now most companies are opting for thin gaming laptops and it is nice to see having an option for thick laptops with amazinf cooling.
I want an all-Black or an all-Aluminum colored Alienware laptop. Not three different colors on the same chassis. That screen is very dim and low contrast for such a high-end laptop. Disappointing Alienware!
I own a M18 R1 Ryzen-Radeon. It's fine. Turbo mode, just press the turbo button, don't touch the FN button, that's for using the Function key function.
No, the real question is What THE HELL HAPPENED TO This Channel. This channel has been nothing but complaining after complaining. Especially after watching this video.
I've been looking to buy a new laptop recently, but I"m not a fan of the AW designs in recent years. My first was an AW17R1 I bought back in 2013 and absolutely loved. After having some issues with the NVIDIA GPU in 2018, I finally upgraded to an AW17R5. Cool design, but a larger footprint. Gone was the internal BlueRay Burner and no SD slot to speak of. I haven't really missed the burner as I load music onto SD cards or stream from my phone now, but as I do a lot of photography and some video editing, an internal and easily accessible SD slot would be nice to have, along with at least one USB port on each side. Not sure why so many laptop manufacturers seem to be stepping away from this.
As an owner of original X17 r1 I spent like $3,000+ on it (i7-11800H, RTX3080, 4K UHD 100% Adobe RGB). I pretty much agree with you. On the good side, the laptop is really thin. The build quality is great, it feels very premium, and it's really really beautiful. However, it's not really small or light The footprint is larger than regular 17.3" because of the rear exhaust. If you think that power brick is large, the original x17 brick doubles that size. It's stupidly large. Dell cheap out and gives you a typical 330W adapter. The one in the Video is an improved version. After 2.5 years or so, The power board died, I sent it to Dell for repair. It came back with a lot of scratches, so I sold it on eBay.
Dell “happened” to Alienware and now it’s just a marketing hype. “Dude, you’re getting a Dell.” was a mocking joke we get the latest OptiPlex. Goodwill and swap meets are littered with Dell machines.
Dell have been using the same chassis's for like 20 years. Probably longer. I'm not sure how their laptops are but knowing them, probably also some ancient design they bought millions of years ago and want to get the most out of because they spent a lot.
Got an Alienware x17 R1 (11th Gen i7 and 3080) and love it. Seen the new ones at Microcenter with this color scheme and first thing I thought was wtf is this. I was looking for a 4k laptop, ended up buying a 4k 120hz screen for a x17 R2 on ebay for like $150 and swapped the 1080p 360hz on my own. Literally a direct fit plug and play. Unfortunately though wont be going AW anymore however for the portable stuff
Yeah, I have the exact same laptop and I bought a red skin on eBay for it that made it look like a red spaceship. Man this thing is so beautiful. I’m actually an apple guy and I have everything up in my house for me and my family. But this laptop is my fun toy. All the lighting up it does and it’s shaped and and me adding an awesome skin on there. I literally just stare at it sometimes because it’s so beautiful. The R2 came out when I was gonna buy this one, but the two didn’t have the lights come up on the finger control. And that was a dealbreaker for me because I had to have those lights on my finger control.
Honestly, Alienware peaked in 2017 with machines like the beautiful AW13R3 OLED. Those machines where amazing, where accessible and lacked in nothing. All they had to do is shrink bezels, upgrade chips and polish. Instead they went banana in the wrong direction. In general, laptops lost a bit of the mobile powerhouse charm for me, but especially alienware is not even a shadow of itself.
Alienware just doesn't offer anything other than the M18 that interests me, and only that one with the Ryzen9-7900M. They're always missing something. i.e. Great specs, but dim display, etc. For gaming laptops, my first pick is Legion, and closely behind that is Asus. Nobody else is really even close to those 2.
@@albertinodebritobarros8041 Razer quality is no different from Alienware. Great designs, let down by poor quality control. Sad to see, because that is another brand I would like to see do better.
idk, i owned two alienware laptops in my life time. both of time broke within 2 years. i now own a lenovo gaming laptop and it's been running 4 years without issue so far, knock on wood. very satisfied with lenovo. cheaper, mroe sensible design. acceptable battery life. useful battery limit function. decent consumer service.
Honestly, I still like the Alienware laptop line. The changes that I would like to see would be to take the cooling protrusion at the back of the chassis and move it so that it is underneath the laptop giving the chassis a slight elevated stance in the back to not only improve air intake but also increase the angle that the keyboard is facing toward like a traditional keyboard. Another change would be a bezel-less screen with the highest picture quality. Along with all of that, I would make sure that the lid, and the the chassis lined up perfectly. Despite all of the drawbacks, I still like the aesthetics of the Alienware laptops. It's clean with some nice RGB accents that don't make it scream "gamer" but also looks like a gaming laptop.
I've been pretty happy with my Alienware 13 for about 7 or so years now. Added more ram, an extra ssd and did a battery swap and it works well apart from running current AAA games. Sadly, I don't see myself buying another when I eventually do upgrade.
I love my m15 r6. The keyboard is great, and the track pad is good. The screen is beautiful at 360hz. I always wanted an Alienware laptop. So in 2020 I decided it was time for me at my age to check something off my bucket list and haven't any regrets what so ever. It has been solid, and Alienware's support as far as driver and especially bios updates is second to none IMHO.
Same experience for me but you must realize that year to year, quality of Alienware drastically shifts. Some models handle heat dissipation fine while others thermal throttles constantly.
@backbaysailor couldn't agree more. All manufacturers/brands have the same thing happening as well. The experience I've had as far as drivers and bios updates is so cool how it's done. I've always been in the past had to manually update manufacturers' drivers and bios. With 👽, you simply use an app and do a scan ,and it will update automatically. It's just that simple. Love it.
I'm so disappointed with the new offerings from Alienware. 2 years ago I bought an M17 R5 which I'm currently using - Ryzen 7 cpu, RTX3070ti, amazing 4k HDR 120hz display and a mechanical keyboard. At the time I bought it there was nothing remotely as good in its price range. Looking at what they offer now is sad, no AMD option for the 18" model and no 4k HDR screen. I regret not spending more at the time and getting one with better GPU as there is nothing that meets my criteria for upgrade at the current market.
Honestly I love the design and size of the x16 r2. Alienware makes their laptops to take full advantage of the gpu's and cpus by designing a cooling system to be able to pump high watts. That's always been their advantage. And compared to previous gens, they actually made it really portable for it, but at the end of the day, they're considered mobile workstations. It's the reason why asus G series laptops had more wattage in their last generations than in their current generations. In order to slim down the laptop, they had to lower the wattage output because their cooling system can't really handle the higher wattages alienware provides due to their slim design. I do understand that sometimes we all wish that a 4090 could fit into a 14 inch and pump full 330w, but physical restraints still exists. It's one of the reasons why I love my m16 R2, for its size, it's able to really provide decent wattage to my 4070. Those new ryzen chips are really promising though!
Well I had that Asus, and oh boy I will take the x16 all day, any day. The g16 was blazing hot to touch after just a couple minutes of gaming not even talking about higher loads and my model had an issue where the laptop would just compeletly power when faced with a higher load. I guess it I should take it as a good thing because it was giving my fingers a break. I mean people tend to shit on dell and alienware but actually the asus software and products in general are also filled with issues. When comparing these two models I would point out that the asus one has a better display, better battery life but a lot worse performance. Asus 4090 is not coming close to that alienware 4080.
I bought an alienware in 2020, because as you said it was my dream laptop as a child. Well despite having 16gb ram and rtx2070 super, it couldn't run much before thermal throttling. Had to put it on a stand to play some games.
After 12 years with Alienware, for the first time i switched to Razer blade, im a fanboy, Alienware couldn't keep. Nothing new anymore, no risk, no innovation! Sad...
Had the AW M17 laptop 15 years ago, was really happy with that. In 2018 bought the M15 R2, not happy with that: Performance was great, then it started lagging. Repair shop said the power ac plug soldering was lose and kept the laptop performing like it was unplugged, then the battery mysteriously completely died (not battery but faulty connection). As if that wasn't enough, the touch pad gave out not long after. That was the worst $2800 I ever spent. So I bought a '15 Legion with an Ryzen 7 three years ago and still using it, while my AW M15 sits in the corner collecting dust. No more Alienware for me.
The form factor suits my needs, I use my laptop plugged in all day in one spot so weight and battery life isn't a concern. I have the rear I/O on my Lenovo LOQ and it's now a must have for me.
X17 was nearly perfect. If only they would increase the height a little bit to add the Numpad on the keyboard it would have been essentially a proper Gaming Laptop.
I mean, one of the main problems, was intel’s meteor lake. This laptop cpu is now just not competitive in gaming laptop with its poor performance compared to Zen 5 or Zen 4 AMD HX processors. I was surprised Alienware did not work with AMD for a new flagship model later this year, presumably because its core latency issue with dedicated graphics. Maybe we can see Alienware “be better” again in next year CES with intel’s HX series cpu and NVIDIA’s 5000 series? I hope it is worth the waiting. (And fix the damned screen for god sake. 300 nits are you joking.)
Design wise I think it is fine. This is not an ultra portable option. To be fair a gaming laptop cannot be both portable and had high-end gpu. This chassis offered the best cooling system which I appreciate from a gaming laptop. But the trackpad, the screen and its intel’s poor cpu performance in meteor lake just did not justify its value at this price range.
I have an X17 from a few years back with the 12800H CPU and 3070ti GPU, it works great. Love the extensive connection ports in the rear. Sad to hear the quality has dropped recently.
I dont know, man. Ive had alienware laptops for 11 years now. Ill tell you a little of my experience. I bought a 970m 17....didnt like it. 980m... I gave it to my mom. She still uses it today. The batrery went bad, and that was it. 1070m....it exploded a violant death... Area 51MR2. I fcking loved that thing. Its only drawback was i had to carry 2 power bricks (570 watts) and dell flat out lied about modularity....go figure. My current model is the 18m R1. I have had zero issues with it outside of fan 4 not responding. A software update fixed that. I would argue that the alienware 51MR2 is the finest laptop dell has ever made but they are still liars and they need to get with the times (oled for example). I also got massive discounts because of my membership and career. I paid $2100 for a 4090 rtx model during a black friday sale and Im a veteran and student. Their 12 month program is nice. Would I recommend other laptop brands? Yes actually, I happen to like MSI and ASUS laptops. I wouldnt recommend falcon or Razer laptops.
Reviewing this laptop's form factor as if it's trying to be a thin and light is silly. Laptop's like this are designed to sit on a desk most of the time, but you can move it around or take it on vacation better than a true desktop PC. Sure, this limits is appeal, but it should be reviewed as what it is. This is like reviewing a chrome book and saying it's terrible because it can't run cyberpunk at 4k 360htz. Don't mistake me as saying this laptop is a good one, I'm just saying it needs reviewed in the right context.
i still say the best one was the m18x r2. i upgraded that thing multiple times including the cpu. i loved the hdmi in and would use it as a monitor when i went to lan parties. two 980m and a 3840 mq cpu was the last configuration i had on there with 3 ssds for additional storage in that thing. it was a beast and i miss laptops that would let you upgrade everything including the cpus
it is, only an uninformed consumer that doesnt know build quality and aesthetics have progressed over the last 10 years...or a KID would think an alienware is brand worth considering equally dependent on their "support" if theyre dumb enough to not know NOT to buy AW im sure they have no idea how to tune or use "suites" for power/load management
Just go my M16 R2, it was a Christmas surprise from the wife. This little laptop rocks. Plays Star Citizen with no issues. Compared to my Asus ROG laptop from 2012 this thing is a beast! Yes I was still using it! Now it's a file server in the mancave with 1000's of movies on it.

It's similar for me, Alienware was my dream laptop growing up. However, I thought you would say that they should go back to their roots instead of slimming down. I would like them to go to their roots and make a new Area 51 like machine with modularization like framework laptops. I would also like them to launch a bigger battery options for home and school(non travel without worrying about compliance). I want a reliable tank which can be upgraded for next 10 years at least.
I started buying Alienware in 2013 and have owned about 4 with my last one being bought in 2021. I probably won’t buy another one unless I see an overwhelmingly positive TH-cam review by you or other reputable reviewers. They always are in “concept” mode it feels. Nothing is ever finished in their software and they change so much of their build design so often that they never truly feel complete. Your x16 does look like it is performing quite well with its respective hardware but in the past, almost all of my alienware laptops have been slower than other brands with the same hardware. Dell would always make these devices hit their max temperatures or hover around them with the cooling system on full blast and they still wouldn’t beat the competition. In 2022 I bought my first Lenovo. I spent approximately $800 less for the legion pro 5 than the comparable Alienware and my god was I happy with the purchase. The legions get the most out of the hardware they pair in their devices giving the absolute best balance in performance. The cooling is second to none with my latest legion 7 pro with the 7945hx and a 4080, gpu temps stay and average around 70degrees while hitting 4070 super desktop performance. The 7945hx is the fastest laptop cpu 2 years running and still cheaper than the intel counterparts. It never thermal throttles even in cinebench stress tests and will score 34000 all day long. In gaming, the processor only uses one ccd and only needs at most 55 watts to push 5.4ghz on multiple cores for the games I am playing. Keeping temps in the mid 80s on the cpu. Truly one of the best built, and priced laptops for its time of release. I don’t think in the future you will see a better year for a laptop price/ and performance.
Picked up a M16 R2 with a 4070-video card and the i7 155h processor for $1,300. Dropped a 4TB SSD $329.00 and upgraded the ram to 32GB for $82.00. I think for the price it was the best thing out there as of 1-5-25
My Assessment and I got them in the last 2 years. 1) Build materials are crap and cheap. The case screws pop out and just fall out. They unscrew themselves. I think that is a feature. 2) Poorly designed cooling, designed to burn itself out in 2 years so you have to buy a new one. Don't expect any of the Alienware laptops to last more than 2 years. 3) Customer Support isn't great. Already got a M18 AMD lemon which was shipped back and forth like 3 times. One was Dells fault as they shipped the repaired laptop back in super flimsy packaging and it got smashed to pieces. I had to sit and argue with the guy WHY I needed a AMD laptop and NO a NVIDIA replacement won't work. He immediately told me I was full of it, and any game will work on NVIDIA that works on AMD. At which point I told the DELL support representative I don't play games. He was totally confused why I bought the laptop after I made that statement. He started speaking in Hindi and I hung up. 4) After destroying repaired laptop they said no more AMD laptops were available so I had to buy one of their replacement NVIDIA laptops. I told them I use ROCm based tool chain for my job and I couldn't use an NVIDIA laptop. They told me to go pound sand. 5) Worst BIOS ever and requires quarterly updates. Ironic that the crappy BIOS is a bright spot, at least they update it to a crappier version. Most laptop vendors don't like you to update anything on a Laptop. 6) Oh and the Liquid Cooling paste they use. Surprise! It leaks! And guess what? If it does it can cause a fire if you leave your laptop on over night. So NEVER EVER leave your alienware laptop on over night. I have one of the machines left that works. I plan on prying it open and getting rid of that crappy liquid metal or whatever they call it before it torches this one, which at least I haven't had any issues with it. Hopefully I don't wreck it. 7) Warranty is BOGUS. Even if DELL honors the warranty your not getting your laptop back. You will get a different one, and in my case a totally useless and pointless one as like I pointed out, if you use AMD toolchains, which who doesn't if your on LINUX. AI toolchains suck as a rule, and as a rule, I expect to have the source code to fix it. You only get that option with a AMD toolchain. Oh God I am up to 7. I better stop there. The M17 AMD laptop I bought 2 years ago, still works. So maybe the M18's are just designed horribly. I have 7 laptops in my closet. All 3 EUROCOM's I bought in the past 2010/2012/2013 STILL work fine. My ACER Predator AMD 500 ate itself, so that is broken. Sadly it lasted 3 years before dying, but I never had a issue with it. A IBM ThinkPAD 760ED. Still works. Runs hot as hell though. But it refuses to die. Sadly you can't do much with Redhat 5.2 these days which I have loaded on the 760.
Why should I buy that Gucci purse from Alienware, when I can get something cheaper and better. Like my Strix G16 with an i9 13980HX and RTX4080. At least I can upgrade the RAM and 2x SSD. It´s smaller, lighter, not so loud, with a very nice 240Hz 3:2 display, and it rocks in games and serves as a great workstation.
Alienware m15 r6 user here. Same issues! The software and BIOS issues are terrible. I feel like I'm walking on a mined field. If alienware command center stops working it's over. You have to "fix" it by downloading it again and again until it works. Also, the very inadequate cooling leads to 100c on both gpu and cpu. You CAN fix this issue by spending hundreds on PTM and undervolting.
I haven't seen an Alienware video yet on the new Area 51 (16") laptop, so let me post this here: I currently own an M15 R2, and I'm looking to upgrade. The A51 16" seems like the logical choice. I do have some concerns that I'm hoping Alienware have created solutions for already. 1 - Will they have a glossy OLED version (240 Hz and up)? All I'm seeing from Alienware these days are LCDs. 2 - Have they fixed the issue with the rubbed bumper around the screen? It has only been about 4 years, and the rubber parts on my laptop are disintegrating significantly. Maybe a different type of rubber is the solution, or none altogether? 3 - The Heat. My machine used to get soooo hot when gaming. To the point my CPU and GPU were throttling. I had to swap out my fans and cut down on my gaming significantly ( which kinda defeats the purpose of this machine). Hopefully they've solved this issue. 4 - My OLED screen has a random line that appeared horizontally in it, and it glitches in one specific area every time the machine has been idle for a while. Is that why they moved away from OLED? QC issues? Other manufacturers seem to have been able to make them work, why not Alienware too? 5 - What is battery life and battery health like these days for their laptops? It's practically nonexistent in my machine, and has been since about 6 months into ownership. 6 - And finally, what about their chargers? The typical 240W Dell chargers deteriorate significantly from bending near the barrel, and that really shouldn't be the case. My cable is breaking and I have to get a new one, because it has started to supply less power than it should (only 40W according to the computer) I love the brand Alienware, or I wouldn't have spent $3800 USD of my hard earned cash on my device. As someone from the Caribbean, that's a significant sum...I just hope they do better with the next devices....in particular the Area 51 laptops that I saw at CES 2025.
Dell has major quality control issues. I wouldn't recommend it to my enemy. Two of my friends bought G series gaming laptops from Dell. Both developed issues after couple of months. Dell dropped the ball long ago.
It's surprising that so many laptop manufacturers are still even after several years of AMD leading Intel, still prioritizing Intel. They seriously need to get with the program. I'm glad Asus and Razer and HP are at least half way there; the AMD Strix Point based ProArt P16 is quite nice... but I'm hoping for a Strix Halo version for the extra memory and CPU performance, hopefully with two TB4 ports for eGPUs; I'm mainly a Houdini and Nuke user, so there's never really any such thing as too much memory :)
So I have alienware's all way for old m15x. Honestly, they have gotten better. My only issue is that the battery doesn't hold up too long. It's quite hard to carry around. Gets quite warm even when I am not gaming. Does not have the option to upgrade ram.
Got an Alienware for a solid discount back when the 2000 series and Max-Q were a thing. For what i got it it was one of the best laptops on market. But definitely doesnt feel like it for full price, especially now
I had a chance to test the x16R2 recently and it was honestly very solid, but did have some large shortcomings. The RGB on the laptop was the worst I have ever seen. Sure the colors looked vibrant but there was almost to customization and it was so limited to what you can do with it. The screen was just too dark. There is also to real quiet mode. Their mode labeled quiet was quieter than the other modes, but was louder than it should be. If the screen was brighter I may have looked past the other issues and kept it. Maybe next year?
I remember wanting an Alienware before Dell bought them and ended up getting a Dell Inspiron 8600 which came with FarCry 1. Had a Radeon 9600 w/128mb vram at the time. Alienware was still crazy expensive at the time, while they offered good hardware and their own tech support, the added paint job was like $500 alone
I'll be honest, the size, weight and overall design isn't much of a problem depending on your use case. If you're in the market for a thin and light laptop, then you shouldn't really be looking at most gaming laptops anyway, but if you're looking for a desktop replacement, size and weight doesn't really matter nearly as much. I actually speak from experience because while I was in college I carried a laptop in that weight class and it really wasn't that big a deal. What's more important is, does what the laptop have on offer compensate for its size and weight and when it comes to this Alienware laptop, I would argue the answer is honestly no. First of all, a 16" display is nowhere near big enough. There are laptops on the market of that weight class that come with at least 17" displays, so 16" is a joke. So, I'm not really defending Alienware here, just the existence of big chungus laptops. They have a place on the market too.
I'm on my 2nd Alieware laptop - I agree with all your negative points. On top (pun intended) the motherboard is reversed which makes repasting a very time consuming job. The provision for only a mini mem card is tone deaf for what most users need. The paint on the keyboard for both my laptops rubbed off within 12 months of purchase. Their Alienware command center is a terrible joke tht works less than 50% of the time. My current Alienware X17 R2 runs at almost constant 100 degrees C on even the most mild tasks. It does give me good performance in some gaming tasks but, for the money, it is not a good choice. This is most likely my last Alienware laptop.

Alienware needs to go back to its roots. The m15x and m18x was peak for me when it came to design for laptops. Yes the laptop was heavy and there were certainly things that could've been improved at the time. But Alienware maintained its distinct identity and unlike most gaming laptops they lasted longer due better airflow. Getting a Alienware meant you were making certain compromises when it came to weight but you got dell warranty, unique Alienware design, and a relatively reliable laptop in the gaming laptop market.
there is one thing i learned over the years with electronics. a compagny that often makes huge rebates, can make great products...but it'S a gamble.. sometimes it fits the bill...sometimes. and also, the resale value is abysmal, unless you sell it to clueless people. but hey i won't complain too much, as i write this from my Dell G15 Ryzen Edition....:P
I bought a Desktop Alienware during the great GPU shortage a few years ago, ended up with a 3080 that also contained a Dell Alienware desktop attached to it. Loud, case straight out of the 90s. Partially my fault, I have the 3rd party fans for the outer case but never installed them. This is what happened to our Alienware dreams of years ago.
*reads title* Dell. Dell happened, and is still happening. When Dell bought them the quality immediately went downhill because Dell started shoving DELL parts into Alienware rigs and the quality was just... bad. Even now it isn't what it could be. As Steve has shown with their secret shopper series the Alienware cases and hardware have design choices that make... no sense, and some choices while literally in the way of the current design - are still there, in the way. Literally throwing money into the wind for things that are not needed other than to be different, or to prevent direct swapping of components. Frankly I would only buy from Falcon Northwest at this point if I wanted a full custom laptop... It's hard to believe they are often cheaper, now, and have better hardware than other options.
This machine sounds downright obnoxious for anyone actually using it as a laptop. A gaming portable only really works if it's still good to use unplugged, in public. I'm pretty sure people at the airport (or meetings, or...) would hate me while I used it.
I have this laptop and I love it. Everyone just compare this laptop with g16 or other thin and light laptop, but that is not its category. It has the best laptop performance and it is not meant to be carried around. This should be compared with other performance oriented laptops instead of thin and light laptops. I used to have a 8 liter sff desktop that is small but is no where near this laptop. People who like sff only cares about size not weight, and this laptop is the ultimate sff.
personally. I love the cherry mx ultra low keys they feel great. its a laptop with gaming in mind. im not taking an Alienware to a coffee shop to write papers. its saying with me at home, on overnight/long term trips where I have a place to set my stuff down . and in the off chance i do take it to class. who cares if the keys a little loud. im not taking notes realistically
i really don't like how a lot of gaming laptops and even some productivity laptops just go with a mini sd card slot...like the mini sd cards are way more prone to failures vs a normal sd card.
Look, I'm sure some people have had an Alienware and never had issues but not me. I purchased a used M15 R5 "Ryzen edition) and that laptop had nothing but software issues, strange performance and the build quality was questionable. What a mess. Well I sold it and purchased an M16 R2 (redesign) and my god, software was STILL a mess. Drivers wouldn't install, Support assist was a mess, ACC was a disaster and ended up returning it. Never again. I recently bought an Acer Nitro V w/ 13620H/ 4060 on sale and man, what do you know, everything just works, thing feels solid too. Drivers install just fine, and Acer software works well. Surprisingly I get better fps in some games at 1080p too. No amount of RGB is worth that headache.
I mean, they got bought by Dell.

It's large, heavy and impractical. That sounds like vintage Alienware to me.

About time somebody stood up for Alienware
Apple at least gives great built quality and performance with their ARM chips

You haven’t seen ASUS ARMOURY CRATE. The definition of slow glitchy bloatware.
same i had my very first one back in '06-'07 before dell even bought them out. it was called the Area 51 m9750.
As an owner of original X17 r1
I spent like $3,000+ on it (i7-11800H, RTX3080, 4K UHD 100% Adobe RGB). I pretty much agree with you. On the good side, the laptop is really thin. The build quality is great, it feels very premium, and it's really really beautiful.
However, it's not really small or light
The footprint is larger than regular 17.3" because of the rear exhaust. If you think that power brick is large, the original x17 brick doubles that size. It's stupidly large. Dell cheap out and gives you a typical 330W adapter. The one in the Video is an improved version.

The power board died, I sent it to Dell for repair.
I think many of the pain points here, come down to Alienware keeping an outdated chassis...
Razer in terms of performance is best but damn they expensive
@@J.Wick. they are missing a LAN port as well
@@albertinodebritobarros8041 Razer quality is no different from Alienware. Great designs, let down by poor quality control. Sad to see, because that is another brand I would like to see do better.
@@stevens1041 agreed.
Razor blades hand down.
idk, i owned two alienware laptops in my life time.
both of time broke within 2 years.
i now own a lenovo gaming laptop and it's been running 4 years without issue so far, knock on wood.
very satisfied with lenovo. cheaper, mroe sensible design. acceptable battery life.
useful battery limit function. decent consumer service.
My $6,000 worth of Alienware laptops were a load of CRAP.
I'm currently VERY pleased with my two beautiful Fujitsu machines.
@@JagadguruSvamiVegananda you made the same comment so many times. Do you work for Fujitsu or what?
@@stevens1041 The latter. ☝️
Sadly, I don't see myself buying another when I eventually do upgrade.
so technically you're not happy with it😂
I love my m15 r6.
R u dell salesman
Dude, you’re getting a Dell is what happened to them.
The form factor suits my needs, I use my laptop plugged in all day in one spot so weight and battery life isn't a concern. I have the rear I/O on my Lenovo LOQ and it's now a must have for me.
These videos are designed to incite people to complain and get more views.
These videos are unhelpful and unfair.
Not everyone thinks like you.
in my opinion with their X-Series, the peak was with the X14 R1/X15 R2/X17 R2 (2.0 vision)
x17 was excellent
I agree completely. I still have my X15r1 and I use my x15r2 daily. Almost perfect laptops for their time.
X17 was nearly perfect. If only they would increase the height a little bit to add the Numpad on the keyboard it would have been essentially a proper Gaming Laptop.
The 14" is a work of art. It feels like the rest were afterthoughts shoehorned in to fit the design.
Yes 300 nits is a joke.. Similar on hp.. Destroyed omen/voodoo/blackbird... Loving the hdr on my strix
They are missing OLED
Alienware has a lot of issues, but that keyboard is not one of them. The one thing they crush is having an amazing keyboard for typing.
This dude’s sponsor is literally a Television level ad. That was so beautiful 😭
They literally sell backpacks for the laptops and has a fleece sleeve in it to prevent scratches.
Don't mistake me as saying this laptop is a good one, I'm just saying it needs reviewed in the right context.
i still say the best one was the m18x r2. i upgraded that thing multiple times including the cpu. i loved the hdmi in and would use it as a monitor when i went to lan parties. two 980m and a 3840 mq cpu was the last configuration i had on there with 3 ssds for additional storage in that thing. it was a beast and i miss laptops that would let you upgrade everything including the cpus
m17x r4 user here, really similar quality. 2012 lineup were the last great ones
The fit & finish looks like absolute crap.
it is, only an uninformed consumer that doesnt know build quality and aesthetics have progressed over the last 10 years...or a KID would think an alienware is brand worth considering equally dependent on their "support" if theyre dumb enough to not know NOT to buy AW im sure they have no idea how to tune or use "suites" for power/load management
I thought Alienware was a high end Dell. Kind of like Lexus and Toyota.
18 inch models are their flagships
Same im prob same age maybe a lil older than you and growing up i adored Alienware and when i finally got my hands on one it truly was an epic experience/time, maaann if i could just go back to relive those days. So i had my very first one back in '06-'07 before dell even bought them out. it was called the Area 51 m9750.
I think for the price it was the best thing out there as of 1-5-25
Old enough to remember when they were a premium builder to the slop we got today.
"My complaint is that this gaming laptop doesn't resemble a Macbook Air."
"And my complaint is that this banana doesn't taste like an apple."
I haven't seen an Alienware video yet on the new Area 51 (16") laptop, so let me post this here:
I currently own an M15 R2, and I'm looking to upgrade.
My cable is breaking and I have to get a new one, because it has started to supply less power than it should (only 40W according to the computer)
I love the brand Alienware, or I wouldn't have spent $3800 USD of my hard earned cash on my device. As someone from the Caribbean, that's a significant sum...I just hope they do better with the next devices....in particular the Area 51 laptops that I saw at CES 2025.
That backpack wasn't standard sized. Nevermind the laptop, what is bro's beard secrets???
What wristwatch is he wearing? Looks sick with the grey nato strap.
Just beware, liquid metal does need to be replaced and not a lot of places can do the repaste process.
'HA! you cracked me up at "Tesla", only because I own one and you're absolutely right. That thing fun, but put together like a hotwheels car.
Lenovo Legion is where its at. I own a Razer Blade 18 and love it but I also bought an Legion pro 8 and love that even more!
Thank you for contacting Dell Social Media support.Currently we don’t have dedicated support on TH-cam, but don’t worry - you can get 24/7 live Assistance on Twitter: @dellcares
Once they left the aluminum design schemes, their designs have been going downhill fast
A Falcon Northwest or a Voodoo were my dream computers, but I always built and customized my own.
there is one thing i learned over the years with electronics.
a compagny that often makes huge rebates, can make great products...but it'S a gamble.. sometimes it fits the bill...sometimes.
and also, the resale value is abysmal, unless you sell it to clueless people.
but hey i won't complain too much, as i write this from my Dell G15 Ryzen Edition....:P
If you’re in a classroom setting. There will be plenty of people with loud keyboards there.
Hey, what is the name of the watch that you wear?
*reads title*
Dell.
Alienware's laptops are out of this world, literally
They are so out there, that they get thrown in dumpsters.
Those graphs were good but you didn't have to re-order it every time - since it already was a bar graph
i really don't like how a lot of gaming laptops and even some productivity laptops just go with a mini sd card slot...like the mini sd cards are way more prone to failures vs a normal sd card.
Did they fix where the fans fell over time I currently have an MR4 17 in the fans are just almost toast, getting them replaced.
PLEASE list your watch collection 😀
Alienware still makes great laptops. They’re just pricey.
