ABO Blood Group System:
1. Discovered by Karl Landsteiner in 1901
2. Classified into four main groups:
A
B
AB
O
ABO Blood Group Genetics:
1. Determined by ABO gene on chromosome 9
2. Three alleles: A, B, and O
3. A and B alleles are co-dominant
4. O allele is recessive
ABO Blood Group Characteristics:
1. A antigen (ABO gene): present on red blood cells in A and AB groups
2. B antigen: present on red blood cells in B and AB groups
3. Anti-A and anti-B antibodies: present in plasma of incompatible groups
Blood Group Compatibility:
1. A can receive: A, O
2. B can receive: B, O
3. AB can receive: AB, A, B, O (universal recipient)
4. O can receive: O (universal donor)
Clinical Importance:
