The delightfully incongruous & somewhat ramshackle ‘Cafe Cairo’ coffee stall out front of the Victorian station building has long been one of my favourite features of this charming station.
There’s a hilarious Google review on the legendary institution which states:
“The fact I walked nearly 2 miles to what I thort was a cafe and turnt up with it being closed and to top it all of it's not even a shop it's a poxy coffee stand just wanted to say thanks for the wasted journey ITS NOT A CAFE DUMMY'S” 😂

I moved to London about 2 years ago, Woodside Park (just happened to be) my nearest tube and I’ve used almost every day since; it’s never got old, the charm of that old dilapidated signal box (bit of a signalling enthusiast), beautifully preserved canopies, simple platforms with a charming waiting room (and one can’t forget the almost always open toilets, a very welcome facility) just all work- it’s a lovely little station and I’m so glad to be able to share my appreciation of it. ❤

I've already posted this somewhere else but Spike Milligan paid to have the station painted red, white and blue because he thought it too drab and it needed cheering up. I can remember it still being in these colours in 1975. I'm adding a red ,white and blue repaint to the list of things I would do to/for the Northern line should I ever win the lottery. Another thing I would do is pay to have that dreadful cladding and canopy replaced at the Oval with something in white Portland stone and a more Victorian looking canopy. Is there anyone else out there in Hazzard land that thinks the outside of Oval Station could look better.

I just loved it there and over the years I graduated to actually buying a ticket to the next station and eventually all the way to Oxford Circus. I would have been 8 or 9 years old in shorts and sandals (see Famous Five)......The red 1938 stock trains used to make a strange tinkling sound on the rails as they approached and they had wooden floors and Metro-Cammel cast into the door cills. I'm glad to see it still has that country station atmosphere. Thanks Jago.

I noticed that the buildings are built with typical London yellow brick, like the buildings that used to be on mainline platforms of Watford Junction. Those bricks were also used to build many buildings from the late nineteenth century until the mid twentieth....cheaper and easier to make, than the better quality red bricks, which incidentally made up the gone buildings of Watford Junction suburban platforms. Nowadays it's unstaffed tin hovels with no toilets and help points that don't answer, or nothing. And they have to open at least a year behind schedule and cost upwards of £5,000,000 apiece.

JAGO: In a previous video, you featured the charming, and delightful station at WEST FINCHLEY; would you say that it ranks nearly as high on the list of “most Victorian” stations as Woodside Park? Regardless, both stations retain a sense of authenticity.

There is a Woodside Station on the Long Island Railroad that connects with the # 7 Line of the IRT Subway System which can take you to Grand Central, Times Square and many other places that you may want to go. Also, it can take you to Citi-Field ware you can watch a Baseball game that you Brits may appreciate. It's a little like Cricket but much better.

@@edwardsadler7515 Baseball happens to be a very complected game to those who understand it. It's not only two teams which compete against each other but the managers as well. The game is not only played on the field but also in the mind. It's very much a thinking mans game. In baseball a game can be won or lost on just one play.

However, since my visit, the Victorian ambience of the station and it's surroundings has been ruined by that monstrosity of a building erected since I last used the station. Such a shame.

Going back to the economics of the railway for a moment, this video tells you quite a bit. Railway company invests money to build a railway. This makes land along its route more valuable for housing. Landowner sees increase and sells making a packet. Railway gets zero of that unearned uplift. It's a positive externality. It is also a prime argument for land value tax.
