I worked in a rock quarry here in the usa. I did everything in house except for the cylinder work. I would pull the cylinder off and send it out for whatever ever it needed. It's good to see the work that goes into quality repairs. I have since retired but still like to watch a person that takes pride in their work.
nice to have a set of electric rolls to get that perfect bead . good to see the pre heat too . i used to repair and build new rams for all kinds . trick is lots of heat. before , during and after the welds are done . once you start welding dont stop till all the lands are full . always try to run a min 330 amps 1.6 mm 11ni flux core . lay those lines like rolling rope onto a drum . never ever weave ! shows up in the x-ray as waves . instant fail
Your customers must bloody love you! You save them a fortune and give them back better than they could have bought. My neighbour here in Dorset UK is an agricultural engineer and he does similar. Its such a cool niche, and everyone wins!
I am a mechanic not a welder, but I truly appreciate watching a craftsman doing his (or her) job with skill and precision. However, Your channel would not be what it is today without the skill of person behind the camera. Your video shots are clear, sharp, and positioned to show the necessary steps without being redundant and are educational. Good video editing is a skill not easily learned and your editor is excellent. I and I am sure many other of your viewers would like to be introduced to the "voice" and maybe some information on the video equipment you use.

Especially as even the mundane change of a chuck is shown in detail here, I get my apprentices to watch your channel so they can see how using the right rods and reels can affect which method they should use to do a task, keep it up and don't stop the outtakes.
My dad was a Korean war vet and used his GI school bill to attend and graduate Voreehs tec in NY, he was a tool and die, guy. I still can smell the machine oil he came home with coming from his clothes. My first year of high school after Junior High exams was a tech High school where I learned mechanical drafting, blueprint reading, and understanding. I remember shop classes (electrical, woodworking, and metal ). I did not pursue this skill but find it extremely valuable in working on my house and building projects I take on...The irony of this is I followed my father into the military ( a hospital corpsman ) and used my GI school bill to become a BA IN Nursing (RN) and an Associate Degree in Computer Science (I build and network computers with LINUX and Widows). Yet the most joy I get is from using tools and building, My Father was right. We need to bring trade schools back to our youth instead of Internet or computer interest.

Retired know, but love to watch a fellow craftsman at work, and the end, brilliant. People dont understand the time and effort involved. Clean that up, put some weld on, need it back by tonight. I have said before, your videos are addictive. I don’t have a mechanical background (surveyor) but can tackle the majority of tasks on my motorcycles with the exception of the electronic gizmos on the newest one. I notice when you were welding the end piece on that there was a Jubilee clip around the barrel, what was the purpose? Your engineering skills and your wife’s video skills are well matched, and as for the safety officer, exemplary dismantling skills. Brilliant team. 👏👏👏👏👏
I kinda think Abom went downhill after he opened his new shop. The shaper refurbishing was at the tail end of his interest for me. I’m missing ToT’s old output. I’m not even completely up to date on ToT this year yet. And Mathias Wandel has fallen out of my algorithm too. CEE and Hal’s Heavy have filled my heavier machining itch recently. Throw in some Blondihacks for some light work/instruction. I miss working in the farm shop with my brother and dad.

Always take measurements from the original and measure to size before tack welding the end onto the barrel. Yeah we rarely show the measuring stuff because it's pretty boring 🤣
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering this was kind of my question as well. Because you're removing material and creating a beveled edge and then a counter beveled edge are you not losing a few cm/inches in the process? Heck even using the grinder you lost about 1/4-1/2 inch if material.

I'm curious how you maintained the original length of the cylinder. I imagine it would be possible to remove or add a couple mm during this process and I would think that would affect the cylinder install and function (perhaps allow over-travel).
i imagine he measured out the punch holes and used them for both alignment and length and has the manufacturer specification. it is curious though seeing him machine both ends and seemingly butt the ends together.
I have been a master tech, welder and fabricator for over 40 years. This is a class 1 repair. Done the correct way. If someone has a problem with this repair, well then you must have a degree in rocket science and you'll be happy to tell me how it should have been done. I won't hold my breath because this is how it is done. Go ahead and hang it out there and school is all. I mean hell, most young people nowadays can't start a lawnmower so go ahead I'm waiting.
Hey mate I can see why you'd think that. The barrel length didn't change, it was the previous weld I was machining off and the original spigot was long enough we kept at correct length and filled with weld 😎👍

Getting my hydraulic cylinders for my tow truck repaired and these people are taking a "Lifetime" I honestly believe sending both of these cylinders to Australia having you repair them and send them back would have been less time consuming. They are very slow over here in Utah
As a regular viewer of your repairs, (and the outtakes at the end), each and every one is a master class in knowledge, skill and quality at every level. To digress a tad, the close-ups of the lathe machining leaves me amazed at the cutting tools hardness and ability to chip and hone steel..

I love the end when you try to start your welding and it just burns back and your getting tiffed. Its such a common thing, seems to me when I take a break from a lot of welding and come back the darn thing is not having it with welding. Lol. Great repair job. How do you know you've got the length right when completed, I've never seen any dimensions taken, cheers
Always take measurements from the original and measure to size before tack welding the end onto the barrel. Yeah we rarely show the measuring stuff because it's pretty boring 🤣

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering this was kind of my question as well. Because you're removing material and creating a beveled edge and then a counter beveled edge are you not losing a few cm/inches in the process?
Heck even using the grinder you lost about 1/4-1/2 inch if material.

I'm curious how you maintained the original length of the cylinder. I imagine it would be possible to remove or add a couple mm during this process and I would think that would affect the cylinder install and function (perhaps allow over-travel).

i imagine he measured out the punch holes and used them for both alignment and length and has the manufacturer specification. it is curious though seeing him machine both ends and seemingly butt the ends together.

I have been a master tech, welder and fabricator for over 40 years. This is a class 1 repair. Done the correct way. If someone has a problem with this repair, well then you must have a degree in rocket science and you'll be happy to tell me how it should have been done. I won't hold my breath because this is how it is done. Go ahead and hang it out there and school is all. I mean hell, most young people nowadays can't start a lawnmower so go ahead I'm waiting.
Will it matter that the length was reduced by a few centimeters when truing up both ends?
typically not, the rod end on the shaft should have some adjustment if it needs it.

Hey mate I can see why you'd think that. The barrel length didn't change, it was the previous weld I was machining off and the original spigot was long enough we kept at correct length and filled with weld 😎👍

Getting my hydraulic cylinders for my tow truck repaired and these people are taking a "Lifetime" I honestly believe sending both of these cylinders to Australia having you repair them and send them back would have been less time consuming. They are very slow over here in Utah
As a regular viewer of your repairs, (and the outtakes at the end), each and every one is a master class in knowledge, skill and quality at every level. To digress a tad, the close-ups of the lathe machining leaves me amazed at the cutting tools hardness and ability to chip and hone steel..

That weld setup was what I was using, Lincoln wire and gas, get the setup right and the flux just peels off behind you. Another great video mate 😎😎
I love the end when you try to start your welding and it just burns back and your getting tiffed. Its such a common thing, seems to me when I take a break from a lot of welding and come back the darn thing is not having it with welding. Lol. Great repair job. I've been doing excavator bucket corners and about to do another.
