  • Just just Noooo, I think this was a cold seizure. At any rate its back to the drawing board for my Hirth 2704. I had to leave her at another airport and hitch a ride back to my hanger. I will know more about what type of damage I have sustained in the following days.

    Ok fellows, I will now elaborate a little more on this video, but first I'd like to remind everyone that flying and video of TA-1 is just one aspect of my life. Recently my family has had more important things to deal with this past week due to the loss of a family member, so the fact that I even posted this was just me trying to share with the group things we should all be aware of while pursuing our dreams. First this was a real engine out, not practice and I'm sorry if you dont like the background music but I cant please everyone! So I was originally scooting around at 1800' just having a good time enjoying the scenery when I noticed an unrelated compass deviation and attempting an in flight recalibration. At the same time I had reduced my power setting to bleed off altitude to land and visit friends down below. This is why I believe the engine had a cold seize due to a rapid cool down and lack of appropriate lubrication (hindsight). I am not 100% sure how much damage the engine may have sustained as I have not done a thorough inspection yet, the aircraft is still sitting in a friends hanger until I can properly retrieve it later. I will update the group when I get started but these things do take time to sort out, so be patient and refrain with the stupid comments, ya'll know who you are. As for everyone else I thank you for your encouragement, valuable opinions and advice.

    The engine seemed to be fine after a restart. I have had several engine outs with 2 stroke ultralights back in the 80's. Oil fowled plugs were usually a dead stick landing.

    None of us will ever know what we'd do in a situation like that until we're actually in it. Good job keeping your head and flying the plane (under control) the whole way to touch down!

    What happened? You need a follow-up video explaining your experiance.vaporlock? Fear level? How did you get it back to the hanger?

    If there is any damage, I hope it is minor. Please post an update when you know more about what happened. I'm glad you were able to land safely, that's what counts.

    Good save. I'm pleased to see you come through it safely. Like everyone else, I'm curious about the root cause. Thanks very much for sharing the videos with us.

    Sucks to have an engine out... but this is the best place and situation to have one.

    Thanks for sharing and sorry to hear about your loss. Sometimes we just need to fly to get away from it all and I can relate. The outside world stops outside the cockpit. You got it down and all is good. I would probably have needed to change my underwear myself....

    its hard to tell from the video but it doesn't sound like a typical cold seizure, its more common in cold air with liquid cooled engines when the outside of the engine case temperature is drastically different than the piston temperature and causes the piston to rub against the side walls of the case. Hirths are pretty resistant to cold seizures atleast thats what they claim. It sounds like you have a fuel starvation issue but just to be sure I would pull the exhaust and shine a flashlight inside the engine to check for scarring on the piston.

    Is that the standard exhaust/muffler for that engine? Each exhaust/muffler has to be tuned specifically to each engine.

    Looked like the engine was runing the hole time and was driving after he landed so maybe a practice going to idle and gliding what it looked like to me !!

    I flew a phantom ultralight back in the 1980s. It had a Kawasaki 440 engine. I never had an engine failure. Because, It's a Two Stroke. You should see a little Blue Smoke!

    were egts too high on it? i run my engines (rotax) so egts are 800 to 1050 degrees at cruise usually, better to be cool than run them on the edge at 1100 to 1200 degrees, never had an engine out or any issues in the 800 plus hours i have flown behind 2 stroke engines

    • @destroytheilluminati770
      @destroytheilluminati770 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DavidWebb-rz3vi never any issues running egts that cool, better safe than sorry, pushing it to 1,200 is just asking for trouble imo, a long as its running clean/smooth, plugs are dark tan/light brown, thats good enough for me, never had any issues myself but a couple guys local to me ran theirs to close to 1,200 and ended up with scored pistons and stuck rings. Ive ran different brands of Egt gauges and sensors and have found them to be somewhat consistent in their readings in my engines, i go primarily off what my plug looks like along with the egt range its running at to know that i'm in the safe range

      I believe the real debate is 2-stroke or 4-stroke. 103 allows an additional 24 lbs for a parachute. I believe they should consider an allowance of 30 lbs for a 4-stroke engine. It would make the whole class of ultra lights safer.
