    I had a Full Delkevic system fitted on my 2002 VTEC last weekend.
    On the ride home (10 miles) it showed up a few strange flat spots and general unhappiness in lower rev range plus a lack of power.
    Yesterday I took the flapper hose off, taped the hole and reinserted the hose (closed).
    I unplugged the PAIR and taped the connectors up (for moisture).
    Started it up and higher than normal idle hmmm.
    I looked up the marble in hose mod and I don't have any marbles so I took the hose off and gaffer taped the air box hole and reattached the hose (closed).
    I took it out today and did an overall road test (B roads, fast A roads and a dual carriageway)
    The bike is now running like an absolute dream.
    No flat spots etc and power delivery is fantastic.
    If the mpg is better or worse I really don't care, it's now running like a Honda v4 should.
    Kev, thank you for the video.

      By the way, I didn't take the snorkel out.
      In my opinion I don't think the air flow is restricted that much without the snorkel.

    As the black pipe has a vacuum on it, it night be best to pop an m4 screw in it. The tape won't be air tight.

    Well.. I made the modification with flapper, valve and with and without snorkel. I feel that the removal of the snorkel is not a key element of this modification. IMHO it improves but not a lot. The main change comes from flapper and valve. It is also true that blowing some hot air on the snorkel it gets out quite easily without any risk of damaging the plastic enclosure. Now the bike is much more fluid at low RPM. Recommended. Thanks again for this video lesson. Well appreciated. Cheers.

    I bought a 2009 VFR 3 months ago. I love them bike apart from the jerky throttle response around 5000 rpm. I saw your mod so thought I would try it as if it didn't work as I could easily put it back to stock. I did the flapper and snorkel first and it improved the drivability and the intake noise is amazing! I have now done the pair mod and it is so smooth it is like a different bike. Thanks for the advice

  • @OsianLedger

    When disabling the flapper, simple square inch of electrical tape over flapper pipe and replace the rubber hose, nice neat job. Snorkel removal does nothing to help the bike breath, just changes induction noise slightly, the hole in the snorkel is consistent, it doesn't get smaller at any point

  • @SurlyMechanicTX

    For what it's worth, I did the flapper mod and snorkel removal and my VFR idles so much better and low speed throttle response, i.e. stop and go, are much smoother. Makes it more comfortable to ride at lower speeds in my opinion. Nice video.

    Did the same mods to my 2002 back in 2007. Left the snorkel inplace also disconnected the air box air temp sensor and crossed the terminals with 280 ohm resister, replaced the fuel pressure regulator valve, disconnected the O2 sensor and crossed with a 330 ohm resister (one in each socket). Got the mpg down from 56 to 32 MPG. No more flat spot prior to VTEC engagement and now smiling from ear to ear.

    • @lv0ll9
      @lv0ll9 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you're getting worse milage after the mod or? Thinking about doing this as i hoped it would improve low RPM mileage (since i ride alot of b roads). Dont mind the way the bike runs low RPM stock just was hoping it would make it run a little more frugally.

    • @chris94117
      @chris94117 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lv0ll9 technically yes. worse MPG now but overall much happier with the riding experience after the mods and no regrets. My bike was for the CA market. I believe it was made for a lean CA fuel requirements and Honda did not get it right as far as the VTEC was concerned. The mods I did were aimed at smoothing out the VTEC transition only based on things I read in the VFR forum. As a result of carrying out those mods the side effect was to lower the overall mpg from 56 to 32 mpg but I was totally OK with this as the overall riding experience was so much better. Hope this helps! Good luck.

    • @wirenut3020
      @wirenut3020 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never got more than 42 mpg. I don’t have a CA model and mines unmodified. 56 mpg sounds wildly optimistic! Just saying.

    • @chris94117
      @chris94117 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wirenut3020 Totally understand your skepticism. My model was for CA. An engine that was starved for petrol and air and a complete ignition system designed to reduce emissions (and consequently performance) to meet the CA Smog requirements for that year. On the first (long) ride I did I filled the tank and got on the freeway. (Think M or A road) and remained at a fixed speed over a distance (I no longer remember how far exactly although might have it in my riding log) The next time I filled up I divided the number of miles traveled by gallons consumed and the result was 56MPG. However, as stated in my previous posts, the riding experience was horrible with less power and an extremely rough transition to to VTEC. (So bad in fact that I considered selling the bike) I found the mods on the VFR forum and the bike ran much better with a far smoother transition to VTEC afterwards. To me the riding experience comes first. I would rather have a motorcycle performance that is smooth and predictable, (I now average around 32 -ish) than one that lacks power or predictability at high mpg. I prefer to focus on fun factor and quality of ride over higher mpg.

    i removed even the flap with his plastic sheet from the airbox and now I have a big hole. it's really sounds great, I have more power between 4-5000rpm and the gas from the exhaust does not smells as unburned fuel like it was before.
    Also, I noticed that the water temperature is a little bit cooler now, but at the same time, after a ride I can hear the bike ticking from the hot, and I think the frame is getting wormer.

    I'll never understand VFR800 5th Gen owners choosing to disable the intake flap. I own two 5th Gen VFRs, a '99 and an '01 because I love them so much I had to have one from both halves of the 5th generation. Why on Earth would you disable the intake flap? You don't like the hard sound of the air box hitting resonance at about 7,000 on the long intake track and then, after the flap opens up the short intake track you get to hear it hit hard again at about 10,500? Where does this weird belief come from, this conviction that a random VFR800 owner knows more about matching the volume of of an air box to a motorcycle engine and the computed fluid dynamics of the airflow in that system than a whole Honda engine design team?

    You can use the C spanner and extension from the toolkit to prop the fuel tank up (put one of the bolts back and the extension locates on that to stop it slipping). That works a treat; no need for substitute pieces of wood. Assuming you have the toolkit for the 'bike. Good video; although I don't seem to have the same issues with my 09 plate VFR so will not be doing the mods. Yes; I've checked and they have not been done.

    The Pair valve is open when not controlled by the ecu. Disconnecting the wires means it is now open! Also the purpose is to introduce oxygen so that any unburnt emissions will fully combust. If you were to block the hose off it means that your O2 sensor will read it as rich and will lean out your mixture. Pretty much the opposite of what you said. And the other thing is that your system is engineered around the Pair valve being functional.. The burning of the leftover gasses increases the temperature of your exhaust which is used to heat up the catalytic converter to its temperature of optimal efficiency. More than one VFR owner has put the bike on a dyno before and after these three mods and found a loss of 2-3 hp. Snorkel mod makes it sound good though!

    • @KevsShed
      @KevsShed  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To be fair mate, I did a little research into what you said above and can actually confirm that you are correct about the PAIR valve being in an open condition when not receiving 12V. I'm surprised that I didn't come across this little snippet of info when I was doing the research for the video! However the Honda Manual confirms this. I have since tried this mod by adding a tight fitting marble into the hose between the airbox and PAIR valve in order to block the airflow entirely as i have found others have done. I have to be honest that I am a little underwhelmed anyway. I am likely to return the PAIR valve back to stock but I do enjoy the added sound of the snorkel delete as you said. I will upload a video in the near future about my thoughts on these mods as soon as I get the opportunity. Thanks for your constructive comment though Tim. Stay tuned!

    • @ASadP1ckle
      @ASadP1ckle 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Difference here though, is that the bike is running rich with the pair valve, removing it causes the engine to run leaner, resulting in better fuel mileage and a ratio closer to the golden 12:1 for optimal power. This is why you should have the bike tuned after this mod, to make sure it is in the golden ratio and is making good power. Big power mods though are the snorkel and the flapper, allowing quintuple the airflow into the engine, meaning more air, more gas, more power overall

    • @performingartist
      @performingartist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ASadP1ckle That's nonsense. The area of the opening to the airbox with and without the the snorkel is the same. It does not increase airflow. At low RPM the flapper closes because the engine needs fewer CFM. Closing the size of the opening does NOT decrease the amount of air available to the engine since the amount of CFM is easily achievable with either the larger or smaller openings. What it does is increase the velocity of the incoming stream. It's just physics. The resulting higher inertial velocity of the airstream increases efficiency at low RPM. And really I have not found a single person that can show you a dyno run before and after these mods who can show you a power increase.

    • @ASadP1ckle
      @ASadP1ckle 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Have you pulled a snorkel from these bikes? I have. The intake area has greatly increased with it's removal. Do the math, you take out the restriction, airflow increases

    • @performingartist
      @performingartist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ASadP1ckle yes. I have a 98 5th gen. The snorkel removal increased the sound level. But the opening is still the same size. The same amount of air will enter either way.

    Coming to this comments section late to the party and being a bit of a debbie downer, but the purpose of removing unburnt hydrocarbons from the exhaust isn't to save the polar bears, it's to avoid producing toxic/carcinogenic emissions. It's not so much the polar bears it's helping, more yourself and those around you. Climate change and pollution aren't the same thing! Anyway, happy riding, I'm looking at getting a VFR of some sort and your maintenance videos are very informative.

    • @KevsShed
      @KevsShed  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@andyjamestf Fair question! Your right, I didn't bother and the reason for that is that the valve is essentially a reed valve which is operated via a solenoid. If the solenoid doesn't operate then neither does the reed valve. There is no way for air to leave the air box and enter the exhaust with the solenoid deactivated. Each to their own though. I won't tell someone they are wrong if they wish to do that! I just don't feel it is necessary.

    Hi Kev, i bought a 2003 vfr the other month , and finally got it on the road a couple of weeks ago.
    I did my first long ride with attention to fuel usage. Filled it up as i left , topped up the used when i returned. 60 miles , 12£ of fuel. Seems a tad high to me. ( even me and my b...pillion. )
    Easter weekend, i got the tank up and found that the snorkel mod and flapper mod had been done.
    Ive jammed the flapper closed for now because i cant get the plastic T connector of the vacuum to the tiny pipe that comes off the electric actuator. Right down between the frame and engine. Any suggestion how i could plug that in ?
    I learned that the PAIR sends extra air into the exhaust and so the EFI delivers more fuel... was that my high guel usage cause ...no. it was also disconnected.
    Will me blocking (and later restoring) the flapper bring my MPG to normal levels?
    Or could it be something else?
    Any insight or help will be appreciated.

At £75 for a non-performance part I was leaning towards removing the PAIR valve as so many have done. However, I the problem turned out to be that the (very fine) trigger and earth wires had broken away from the feed plug, which is the same as disconnecting the plug as in your vid.
