The voice is slightly inspired by the English movie “stranger than fiction” where the protagonist hears a voice. But this one is very original.
The director is my close friend and I am glad that you liked it and wanted to talk to him. It is a great movie and I was wondering if I could recommend his first movie which awarded him 2 national awards last year which was critically acclaimed tamil movie released last year in Netflix due to covid restrictions. This is pure intelligence. These guys are not Indians BUT look at how deeply they have analyzed this story and brought out the beauty of this movie to us. YET our Indians will NOT appreciate the brilliance of such a movie as Maveeran. Thank you guys . I really enjoyed your thoughts and reaction of this brilliant movie. Watch more movies of SK like Doctor...and the other one where he was a female nurse. He actually looked so beautiful as a female. Dig up more movies and watch guys. I think the main problem is tamil literacy. We can't say any words other than a select few words: "nalla iruku" "massa iruku" "semmaya iruku" "hollywood mari iruku" "vera mari pantanga" "veera level" "veeeeeera level".
So when a movie is over, this is how we talk about it. Have we ever used words like 'gentrification' 'conscience' 'great shot' 'quirky music' 'original' 'stereotypical'. We just say first half was good, second half was boring. and think to ourselves we just expressed ourselves.
Did you know 'entertainment' direct translation is 'pozhudhu poku'? the way we use this word is to imply negative things in life, so how would you ever say 'this movie was very entertaining'.

Symbols not discussed:
1. Charlie Chaplin did silent movies. It's a foreboding of the climax.
2. Sathya jumps twice in the movie. The first leap is out of desperation in the start of the movie. Sathya's second jump off the boat is the literal "leap of faith" he needed. He carried the "rock of fear" that had been weighing him down all along, thereby the shot of the rope around his feet breaking, leaving fear behind. Despite his outward cowardliness, the inner "anchor" of value systems he possesses, lifted him up and saved him. All he had to do was to trust in himself.

Also, he got the hearing after a while when his head got hit in the wall first time he slipped.

Maveeran didn't get the love it deserved in the box office. Don't know why a very original concept unseen in Hollywood or anime,tailored with emotional story for the target audience and very well executed.the only flaw would be the love intrest and their relationship taking a sidestep
This is totally new to audience so it will not get great bo numbers like mass masala movies but it will become cult classic for many years
Sadly, many movies barged in after the release and as usual, Tamil suck at marketing outside Tamilnadu (or even in Tamilnadu, I don't know).
And also, few percent of people were disappointed at commercial take down in the second half.
it was collected newrly 90+ crores.. it could have got more than that, but it didn't. still it was profitable movie

Vijay Sethupathi didn't took salary for giving voice-over for this movie. He generously did his part for the friendship he had with the cast and crew . This is called a healthy cinema industry.
If you notice, the film starts with him drawing the comic where the warrior saves the princess (Ilavarasi) ....and the climax is him saving the girl Ilavarasi just like how it's done in the comic. He was writing his story from the beginning ❤

I am from Kerala and watched this movie yesterday and really loved it an unique story which was not done before but l don't understand y it didn't get the hype in theaters.
Sivakarthikeyan started as a mimicry artist. Appeared in small screen for game competitions, became anchor for several TV shows, got his first big break in 2012 and has never looked back ever since. He is a huge Thalaivar Rajni fan❤
34:39 the mom is actress “Sarita”. A very great yesteryear’s actress who doesn’t do much roles now but she is a powerhouse actress.
This journey of this movie is splendid guys. I love how passionately Rick speaks of it . Also , did see Korbin almost tear up when SK was submerged in water He looked at the camera and controlled it
This director is definitely on the watchlist. He won national award for his debut movie and this is his second.
Malayalam has simple yet unique content.
Telugu has over the top cinema but is completely entertaining.
Tamil cinema somehow makes films that appeals to all audiences and its so clever in screenwriting wise.
The fact that you both got emotional about the movie is exactly why you guys are my favourite. This movie is such a gem and am so happy you got most of the nuisances and things the Director did in the movie.. It's an absolute gem..
Very impressive review! Rick your understanding of the nuances and the symbolism was spot on here. Infact watching this with you guys has changed my impression of this movie completely, as I did not think it was all that great during the first watch.
Fun rather sad fact.. SK's dad is a police officer in real life.. and I believe SK's dad died in a shootout ..fighting for the people .. and SK himself became a creative person like in the movie... in a way, this movie feels like an Omage to his dad.. tearing up right now..
SK`s dad is an honest Jail suprentendent . He died while he is working because of high pressures given by his co workers and certain officers due to some issues that he is too honest & strict in his job( evidence from interview by TADA RAHIM)
Yeah he died by heart attack due to tremendous form all corners in an important case I heard... He was a very honest and upright police... Well brought up by his mom and sister...the women of his house...now his wife and daughter. proper family man.
I watched it in ott and missed the ending scene after credits😬.. Just now realised it😅
Being a guilty coward... This movie hit me hard! When the heroine said everyone's climax is death it blew my mind.... I knew it all along but... The sk character trying to not get into trouble was so me... He connected with me... I was totally blown when she said that.... I guess maaveeran character resonated with so many people who go about their everyday family life, work, sleep etc.,not bothered to question things... Thinking that is "practical".... This movie kindled my conscience.

Now that was not a stupid reaction.... That was a precise, concise summary of how I felt after watching the movie, a true original story of a superhero, and how movies should speak about corruption and reality of the society.
A true superhero is one who listens to his inner conscience and shuts all the other voices down, believes in himself, and fights for what is right.

Guys, i agree with everything you expressed for Maaveran (and Jawan). One of my all time favorites for sure. THANK GOD they didn't go extra with the "love" angle .. thank you Madone and Chandru. PLease watch Madone's MANDELA (won Indian National Award, and few other awards).

When I saw this movie the first time I thought it was just an average film. But now, after seeing ur video I finally get all the connections and the beautiful message the movie has delivered.. and as an audience I feel guilty to not have given the movie the recognition it deserves. Thanks a lot for the in depth explanation. And the final touch in the movie was amazing❤
Athu thaa namba...masala movie ku thaa importance kodupoom
The level of foreshadowing in this movie is freaking crazy. The ending (building crumbling scene) mirrored the opening scene where the magician/wizard destroys the palace (he destroyed the building due to his greed) and him ending up saving the princess (ilavarasi in Tamil translates to princess) using a long line of cloth (which Sathya did so to save ilavarasi, the little girl). And secondly, when Satya runs off to the roof before he (attempts to) commits suicide he utters "He (Maaveeran) then tore off the face of the engineer (the one who misbehaved with his sister) with glasses (or something along this lines)" while scribbling over Maaveeran's portrait on the terrace wall (which he says from the narrator's perspective and the same words are uttered by the narrator later in the movie), which literally happens the same way not once but twice in the movie.
This ties back to what Nila(Satya's love interest) said to Satya before Satya realised that the building is gonna collapse. Nila said that his power is his voice and it has always been him who was the narrator in his mind, which lines up with Satya ended up doing what his consciousness wanted him to do. It is a superpower? Yes. But if you think about it, it was his subconscious which he had suppressed all along until his death gave way for it to (kind of) take over. This film is pure genius.

This should have been the biggest blockbuster of the year. The messaging flew right over the head of majority audience was quite disappointing.

a quick info, Sivakarthikeyan, also known as SK the movie's actor, is one big star in Kollywood, he is not as huge as Rajnikanth, Kamal hassan, Thalapathy Vijay but is getting there. he started his career as a shows anchor and then got into acting in comedy movies and now he's turnng into an action star with this movie. Do check out his other movie, he has a lot of great rom-com movies like Remo.
The actress in this movie, Aditi Shankar, is the verywell-knownn indian director Shankar's daughter and this is her second film. There's a song in this movie, the love songsungg by both SK and Aditi Shankar.
Sivakarthikeyan and Vijay Sethupathy are the new generation actors and the fans often compare both of them just like how they do with Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan, Thalapathy Vijay and Thala Ajith. So that is why Vijay Sethupathy agreed to give his voice-over to this movie as he wants to shut the fans from calling them both rivals. Fun fact, he didn't receive any penny for this movie, he did it out of generosity and love for the director and SK.

I mean... the two are super well known even in the North. Super impressive considering many Vadakkans barely know who Ajith is.

Kudos to Siva Karthikeyan to trust his director, he is known for providing suggestions in the story and screenplay but he completely surrendered to this director because he saw HUGE potential in Madonne Ashwin.
Interesting Titbit: Both Siva Karthikeyan and Vijay Sethupathi started at the same time and were gaining popularity. In Tamil Industry there has always been competition between two top actors. Fans split between these actors. Its MGR Vs Sivaji then Rajini Vs Kamal then Vijay Vs Ajith... So, the media started pitching these two against each other SK and VJS... they almost succeeded, but these two being very mature people never took it serious and had mutual respect for each other.... In fact, the director said he wanted VJS as the voice, So SK was not sure if VJS would agree to this. But, VJS took it with both hands and showed great attitude. SK did acknowledge this in the movie related interview. I'm a fan of both the actors... FYI, just like SRK... SK came from TV, his comic sense is just BRILLIANT.
CALL THE DIRECTOR FOR DISCUSSION, I FEEL HE WILL OBLIJE. He is a promising star from Tamil film Industry.
The movie did very well in the box office... but not a Blockbuster... Critics think it could have been appreciated a bit better. I hope this effort gets recognized at least now.

I watched this movie on my birthday in a fully packed theatre. I will never forget that experience for my whole life. ❤ I have watched this already 4 times by now. Every time it gets me emotional in the climax 🥹

This proves that majority of Indians need full slomo hype fights with big heroes where as less people appreciate original work.Jawan best bits and pieces of all commercial movies put together does record breaking views whereas this original concept film .The film director really wanted us to think instead of some directors who make us look stupid with same old scenes songs then scenes then item song and a grand place for climax. Rick is a real cinema critic who can find the film's real worth. A true analyst and we are lucky he turned towards Indian Cinema all these years. Thankyou Rick and Korbin.

Mandela is this director's first film. And guess what, Yogi babu is the hero in that.... you guys will enjoy that movie a lot.... its similar to this movie... except that's not a super hero movie... its also available in OTT
Collection wise this movie did great. Madonne Ashwin (director) did a great work on script and narration. Tamil audience proved that strong script will be valued even it is not a Mega star film.

I'm equally mad about Jawan, Rick 😅 we just expect better from a SRK and Atlee film lol . But yeah politics ( I've been told there were some jabs being taken at local politicians, I'm not exactly sure who and why) aside Maveeran objectively is definitely a unique superhero film , like minnal murali , bhavesh Joshi and thank goodness for that!

I think him looking upto the sky and smiling was him finally being satisfied with the life he has been living, and not afraid of imoending doom anymore, becauss he knows he did the right thing, amd doesnt have to live in fear of anything anymore. I mean, there are so many things it could mean, the movie was so artistically sound while being appealing to the masses as well.
2 Tamil films which are my lifetime best are 1.Oh My Kadavule, 2. Vinodhya Sidhan - To be defenitely watched in our lifetime. Dont miss those.

You guys should definitely check out Mandela. It is also a film by this director. The lead in this movie is Yogi Babu (the comedian from Maveeran) so it was great to see him take on a lead/serious role and kill it. The movie is a must-watch about India's caste system

The actress who played as mother of the hero in the movie is Sarita. Sarita is great actress, at least in my opinion. Tamil Director K. Balachander, who introduced Sarita to film industry with his film 'Maro Charitra' (kamalahasan as hero), said once that I cannot keep camera running focused on any actor in close shot for nearly 3 to 5 mts, except Sarita ( he didn't mention even about Kamalahasan though K.Balachander considers Kamalahasan as great actor). So Sarita is the best Indian Actress. You should watch her acting. Her films: 1. Angi Sakshi (wherein she portrayed as schizophrenia patient and which got her that comment from K. Balachander). 2. Thaneer Thaneer, 3. Thappu Thaalangal (with Rajinikanth). Particularly ladies should watch her in these movies and should appreciate. I think they are available on TH-cam freely.

if you liked Maaveeran, then you guys should definitelty watch mandela, the director's first film with yogi babu as the lead. I'm sure you guys will love it more than maaveeran. It's less massy and more artistic than maaveeran

Although I watched only your cutup version on TH-cam, I loved what I saw. Great movie. So original, and now that Rick pointed out the Charlie Chaplin reference, what an intelligent writer-director. I am glad it was profitable, even though such movies should be juggernauts at the B.O., so we can get more such movies.
You guys picked up on the symbolism and cues so well; with your "intelligent" comments, the movie was much more enjoyable.
