one of my personal favorites from avenged sevenfold is Buried Alive. Its a more melodic song and more rock than metal as you said but there music does have an edge to it. A Little Piece of Heaven is another good one that tells a funny story if you follow the lyrics and the video of theirs also shows the story.
This is the short version of the video. There is the long version which I find it better cause it have more things added to the song. This song is from the self titled album released on 2007. The guitarist Synyster Gates it's considered one of the best guitar players of this new century.
Scream from this same album is pretty good. I used to listen to them a bit back in the day, now days I don't find myself searching them out but if they make into a stream or something I don't skip ahead.
There are occasional songs where they sound like rock from Avenged Sevenfold. They are definitely metal though. The album City of Evil is probably their most metal I listen to. And I listen to all of their albums. I would suggest Danger Line as a more metal song
As you said, the vocals on this track were made basically to make the big crowds sing along, which is ok for some aspects, but it makes the song fall into the "mainstream" hahah. Nice solo tho. Maybe the next could be Musical Chairs by Fair to Midland? In my opinion it is a great example of a kinda mainstream song but that still stands out among the others ;)
I've always thought blah about that song, if you want to hear some sick A7X check out "a little piece of heaven" or "beast and the harlot" much better tracks. Also bat country. My favs....
Now that I'm skimming through this album, Unbound is pretty good as well. All kinds of nostalgia, this is probably my favorite song of theirs. Lost too, oh geez. First autotune numetal? The last song on the album Dear God is a nice twangy emoish wind-down.
