Environmental hazards were a legit threat, which could also be used to your advantage. You could eliminate a load of enemy encounters by shooting the heads off any dead bodies you came across. Seriously, if you don’t, they will get up and come after you. Combat was highly satisfying, especially when you could get the environment to do some of the work. The enemy designs were sufficiently off putting. The research vessel and oil drilling platform made for unique settings that oozed atmosphere. Cold Fear was a solid line drive of a game, if a little on the short side.

Cold Fear is part of my "Resident Evil in the boat" collection: RE Dead Aim, Cold Fear and RE Revelations. I just wanted to put this here. It's a cool game, short but solid. Recommend to any survivor horror/action horror/seaside horror fans out there! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
That's funny, I've always called it one of the resident evil games, it's the one on the boat, lol.. for some reason, all the people that are speaking the praises of Revelation seem to just not actually understand what I'm talking about.. But then, these are the same people that think RE4 came up with the over the shoulder camera, and also invented you know the concept of third person action, and fed the hungry and, I don't know save the whales or something.. which turns out was bad idea!
Saw this video of yours show up on my recommendations, and I'm glad it did! It's nice to see some gaming channels out there pay this game the respect it deserves. Sounds like we have a similar history with Cold Fear. I remember seeing a review for it in a spring issue of Game Informer back in 2005. Needless to say, the critics panned it and gave it very low scores. Keep in mind, this was immediately following the release of Resident Evil 4, which obviously blew Cold Fear out of the water (no pun intended). Another interesting fact I remember about that particular issue of Game Informer is that it also featured a review for Haunting Ground, which (if my memory serves me correctly) was also panned by critics and given an awfully low score (kinda ironic, considering Haunting Ground has become a beloved cult classic and highly sought-after PS2 game for survival horror fans). Just like you, I also really got into survival horror at that same time. Once I first played the Silent Hill games in 2004 and started playing the Resident Evil games in 2005, I was chomping at the bit to get my 14-year-old hands on more horror games, and both Cold Fear and Haunting Ground were high on me list, I didn't care what stupid Game Informer reviewers had to say about them, haha. Very glad to still have games like these sitting in my PS2 collection.
The amount of reviews from over the years that have aged like milk is hilarious to me. Jim Sterling giving Vanquish a 5/10 will never not be hilarious to me considering the chronic praise that game gets nowadays and Alien: Isolation is held up as one of the best horror games of the 2010s (which I agree with) but got average-mediocre reviews across the board when it came out lol.
Hey Zombiehobo, while I normally groan at all the extra chat around a game breakdown on these videos, I actually loved your chatter and agree with/was interested in so much of what you had to say with this game and the others you mentioned haha :P. Glad you enjoyed it fam. I agree with a lot of games focusing to hard on the grind. I feel like everyone wants to treat video games like a second job these days lol.
i think this game is absolutely amazing, not perfect but the atmosphere and vibe it gives, it’s like Resident evil 4 gameplay mixed with some fix camera angles here and there… i love it
Cold Fear is one of the best games we had in that era. Sure, nowadays it shows its problems with animations and controls, but back then, I had so much fun with it. I remember almost all of it and for some reason I was excited about the part on the ship's deck which had a destroyed railing and waves would crash on the walls and could even make you fall in the sea and die. I love this game, I still have it somewhere.
Dino Crisis 3 went to Space because it was going to be in A Resident Evil 3 style city but Dino's but when they announced it and haven't started working on it yet, well 9/11 happened and they had to go into an Entirly different direction to not offend anyone. 🤓

I just stumbled onto this video in my recommendations and I also didn’t know this game’s existence until today so I went on Wikipedia to find out a little more about this game and I found that reportedly back in 2006 there was originally supposed to be a movie adaptation that some film studio co-purchased the rights for a film adaptation but it was probably cancelled because there’s been no developments on it so I thought I might share it here.
Yeah, back at that period pretty much every game was getting some kind of movie deal or spec script/treatment written for it but pretty much all of them ended up in development hell and the ones that came out were garbage.
Bought this about 2 decades ago at a bargain bin in Game Stop, when they used to sell pc games. Enjoyed it immensely and played it a few more times as i thought the setting was pretty original, killing zombies while slipping and sliding on the deck was something else, lol. Still got the disc, a bit scratched up but in my closet somewhere. Think i'll look for it for old times sake....
1:05 Yeah, the algorithm is weird like that. The more successful a video does, the more likely others are to be shown to people. That's how I stumbled across this one. Good stuff so far. Subscribed, hit the bell, and am making this comment to appease the algorithm Gods so that they may bless this channel. Haha
Ubisoft, like Activision, EA, THQ, used to hire lot of external studios (just like a film distributor) during PS1, PS2 and early PS3 era. Because it was easier to develop and take risk/be creative to do something new. Now the budgets are blown out of proportion, you very rarely see innovative, creative stuff coming from AAA spaces.
Well investors are starting to pull out of the industry entirely which means all the money to make these giant fuckfests is drying up so who knows what'll happen to the industry now lol.
This is easily one of my all time favourite games! It’s a very flawed game that could really do with a remake but there’s just so much to love about this game. Music is easily one of its best aspects.
I was impressed with the wind blowing flamethrower bursts back into your face and damaging you if you were dumb enough to fire into it, because I had never played a game that did that up to that point
@@snesbagel I think it was mentioned either when you first picked up the flamethrower, or as a hint not to fire into the wind. I can't remember which, I haven't played it in a hot minute. That engine was something else!
I'm surprised you didn't mention The Thing, now that was one of the best survival games of the era. It's so good night dive Studios is remastering it. I was hoping for a remake.
It's a shame this game went nowhere. Cold Fear sounds like it would've been Ubisoft's Resident Evil in the sense that the creatures are spawned from a bio-contamination + the presence of shady organizations wanting the weapons that created them.
Lol, for some reason I remember something like a manual save system.. like a manual checkpoint system maybe? Like it wasn't quick savey or anything... But I also remember not having the kind of problems of only a single save file nonsense.. and I would have had those problems lol. It's funny though nowadays, if you don't have auto saves, kids these days don't even comprehend the idea of manual saving.. I mean shit even the PCs, they've taken away most of the keyboard lol.. somehow we've managed to go so far backwards in the peripheral department that even the keyboard has lost the ease of mechanical quick-saving lol.. But of course the important thing is that it makes a lot with noise when you hit a key, and vomits rainbow Skittles at you at all times in random iteratives.
Oh yes, this game brings back the memories. I know they just came out with “Still Wakes The Deep,” but I still think this game should be re-made. Definitely should be made _better_ but re-made nonetheless.
I'm glad I've had the opportunity to play this game as a teenager. Back then it seemed pretty good, had some interesting mechanics, but still not better than RE.
12:48 This is a very true point! I recently got Incursion Red River and while the game is pretty and whatnot, the experience suffers because the framerate isn't stable. It feels like modern games try to be really pretty, however utterly throw most people not on top notch systems under the bus, due to going about it by using expensive rendering techniques and stuff.
@@snesbagel I love RE5 but 6 took everything that I enjoyed in that game and turned it up to 11. After more than a decade of build-up it's like the most coked-out, balls-to-the-wall, no-fucks-given action movie coda to the series imaginable and I love every minute of its glorious insanity.
@@CanadianPale I didn't really mind the action parts of it so much as I just didn't mesh with the game's shooting mechanics. I liked Leon's and Ada's campaigns, thought Chris' was okay, and kind of hated Jake's lol.
I remember really enjoying this game until I hit a dead end. Some door wouldn't open for me and I couldn't progress through the game any more. It was a shame as it's a good game.

"By the power of Cold Fear's awesomeness, I, Gunther Galipot, wipe this planet out of existence!!!"
-The original WTF Boom
1:05 Yeah, the algorithm is weird like that. The more successful a video does, the more likely others are to be shown to people. That's how I stumbled across this one. Good stuff so far. Subscribed, hit the bell, and am making this comment to appease the algorithm Gods so that they may bless this channel. Haha
Thnx man, I really appreciate it!
I find this genre super interesting, I played Signalis and thought it was great
I still need to get Signalis, it looks amazing.
Cold Fear is great. It’s still available on PC.
Yep, that's where I played it! Lol.
This is easily one of my all time favourite games! It’s a very flawed game that could really do with a remake but there’s just so much to love about this game. Music is easily one of its best aspects.
Yeah, I didn't mention it in the video but the soundtrack is pretty baller.
god damn, so happy to see you pop off!!!!!!
Thnx fam, it's been pretty awesome.
I was impressed with the wind blowing flamethrower bursts back into your face and damaging you if you were dumb enough to fire into it, because I had never played a game that did that up to that point
I didn't even know that could happen. That's really impressive.
@@snesbagel I think it was mentioned either when you first picked up the flamethrower, or as a hint not to fire into the wind. I can't remember which, I haven't played it in a hot minute. That engine was something else!
@@radicalthestral8210 For real. Sucks it never got used for anything else.
this channel freakin rocks!
absolute quality content
"this mandate no longer exists" lmfao! that was the moment where I subscribed lol!
I'm surprised you didn't mention The Thing, now that was one of the best survival games of the era. It's so good night dive Studios is remastering it. I was hoping for a remake.
i literally watch your vids for game recommendations thanks , i had never heard of this ....time to play
Glad you like the vids and I hope you enjoy the game!
It was an amazing horror game, the ship listing physics were amazing.
It's a shame this game went nowhere. Cold Fear sounds like it would've been Ubisoft's Resident Evil in the sense that the creatures are spawned from a bio-contamination + the presence of shady organizations wanting the weapons that created them.
Thanks for reminding me about this game! Totally going to emulate this on the Steam Deck
Great video, glad I found this channel, liked and subscribed
Not enough games are set on boats / at sea. It has a unique vibe imo
As someone who suffers from severe sea sickness, this game looks like mynown personal hell.
One thing that sucks about this game is the fact that there are no manual saves.
Checkpoints only, that's a bummer in 2024.....
My friend had this game for the Xbox we played this for hours staying up late good times.
Wait I totally remember this! This unlocked a forgotten memory!
Wow this one went under my radar, its funny how resident evil revelations came out 7 years later after this with a similar aquatic theme.
Look at that! The waist high water guy has to go in and save the Navy Seals. Figures
We need a Cold Fear Remaster, maybe a Remake even though I’m all for Originality and a proper follow up.
Great video! Your voice is very pleasant to listen to.
Thanks fam, glad you enjoyed it!
Cold Fear was actually a really good game!.
It was peak Ubisoft back then..
Yeah, it's a trend that's been getting on my nerves for awhile now.
_Resident Evil 6_ was the logical culmination of everything that had come before it in the series. And it was _glorious..._
I prefer RE5 but that's just me.
I love to see this again honestly
I had this game, it was pretty solid from what I remember but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. What was more funny is I had a classmate with the exact same name as the MC and he couldn’t of been more the polar opposite 😂
