    I am actually glad, most of the characters in this movie were quite smart and made relatively good, yet realistic, choices. It was a refreshing change to the usual decisions made by characters in survival films.

      Yeah it was pretty good they still did make many mistakes but it was better than seeing people only makin mistakes in these kinds of scenarios. Though I think there best scenario idea would have been to keep the red door Hidden. They should have just hidden the door from outside and should have had another exit prepared, with seperate food supplies.

    All I can say is that I recall this film didn't do well with audiences, because the marketing all played up the angle of a concrete, physical "it", like a monster or something, that would come in the night, bringing now-standard action-horror.
    Instead we got a fairly obvious metaphorical "it"; human fear and paranoia being the primary threat, putting the virus as a secondary issue.

    • @enotsnavdier6867
      @enotsnavdier6867 3 ปีที่แล้ว +220

      There is a background presense of a possible "It" monster at several points in the movie, but that's a very minor thematic device. It sucks that the marketing (which is out of the filmmakers control) decided to heavily play that up. Because this movie is incredible and it has been review bombed because of that marketing decision.

      @@enotsnavdier6867 yeah, but the only indication of that is the kid's drawings. the faceless, shadowy figures in the trees. It never really goes further than that. There's Paul's while thing about not going out at night, but that's never really expanded on about WHY. They burn Bud's corpse, and we never hear or see any sign of a monster. All we know is that Stanley the dog sensed something, ran off after it, was suddenly silenced, and later returns (or is returned?) badly injured, dying,, and clearly infected with the disease the humans are hiding out from. We don't know if the dead revive as zombies or whatever other possible nature the disease might have. Clearly the rule about not going out at night isn't absolute, since several times the characters do go outside at night, and even spend the whole night outdoors, so it's not a guaranteed death sentence, like "there are things roaming around at night that'll kill you if you're outside, but they sleep during the day, so it's safe" or anything like that.

    • @chukita374
      @chukita374 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Uh, guys? The "It" is the symptoms of the disease. Every night he had dreams of infected people infecting him, the flesh sores only come out at night, and that's the only time his eyes do the thing. The "it" are the symptoms. The reason no one leaves at night is because that's when the disease is most infectious. It's not some metaphor for fear

    One small detail about Paul’s prepping: his beard and gas mask. If he want to get a proper seal and effective protection with a gas mask, he needs to shave it regularly. Travis is a young man who would have started growing facial hair at this point, and appears clean shaven throughout the film. Paul would have had the same access to shaving supplies. Alright, so I know the easiest answer is that Travis got infected by bringing in Stanley. But there's actually a lot of problems with that answer. The most pressing one for me is how did he manage to not get blood on himself while transporting Stanley? Why not wear a gas mask, why would he leave the door unlocked? Did he sneak back into his parents room to return the key, then go back to his room, lay down, get back up, find Andrew, return him to his parents, and then go downstairs? Also, remember that Will got into hand to hand combat, and could have become infected easily.
    I've seen it's implied that a side effect of the disease is sleep walking. And remember how Andrew was found in the middle of the hall? So was Andrew actually infected beforehand, possibly by Will who got into hand to hand combat? Maybe he infected Travis when Travis taught him how to color? Idk, I think the fact that no one actually knows what happened, yet people blame Travis is a big mistake. As pointed out, maybe older people get sick quicker, so maybe the reason Travis kept dreaming of Bud is because Bud infected him before the movie even started.

      There are some facts that we can be sure of. Sorry for my english, it's not my first language.
      First - Who gets infected, already shows clear symptoms in 24 hours.
      Reason: Paul leaves Will tethered around this time in the tree to confirm the infection.
      Second: The Dog was brought into the room.
      Reason: When Will breaks into the house at the beginning of the movie we can clearly see that there is another door after the red door.
      Third - No one was infected until the dog showed up infected.
      Reason: Will had been in the house for days after touching the blood of the two men who attacked them.
      Fourth - The only way to open the door is from the inside, and with the key.
      Reason: It was said and we all saw it several times during the movie.
      The questions that will solve these mysteries are the following:
      Who had the motivation or innocence to want to go out at night and drag an infected dog into the house?
      Who could open the doors?
      Who had access to the keys?
      And last and foremost, who got infected first at the end of the movie?
      All answers point to Travis.

    Travis seems to have been in the Apocalypse for years. I wanna say Paul probably never allowed Travis to perform with agency in these scenarios. Children who grow up without agency do tend to snatch freedom when given the chance even at stupid moments. Travis, without the proper rearing that reinforces his agency, decision making, upbringing and identity, would probably have settled on smart decisions rather than desperate ones as a teen. I’d say Travis was a time bob set by Paul’s overbearing nature as the paranoid survivalist leader of the pack, but this was the first confrontation they had to probably assess that Paul was not reinforcing Travis in the ways that would help assert a need for independent thought.

    • @enotsnavdier6867
      @enotsnavdier6867 3 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      I'm pretty sure if I remember correctly, the "Apocalypse" of this movie had only been 1 year at the most. None of the characters really ever knew the full scope, or what was truly going on. I don't personally think that Travis was overly dumb, he's not a kid but he's pretty young. I think its reasonable for him to have never truly believed that it was the Apocalypse or that they would be safe. There's also the fact that there's no reason to believe that Travis had ever faced much direct conflict. Paul likely had ample experience with conflict at some point, whether during the crisis or before. I think Travis' lacking in competence can be chalked up to those things, plus the fact that average people aren't generally that competent in the situations he was in.

Whereas you become immediately visible to anyone anywhere near you. That being said I think the best case scenario is to not abandon your defensible house to go waltzing about the woods light or no.

    By the way, I watched the movie today and realized that aspect ratio changes according to Travis's nightmares. These dream sequences are marked by a shift in the aspect ratio to a marginally narrower frame. But later on in the movie the aspect ratio changes once again and remains this way throughout the remainder of the film. This is no longer a nightmare. This is real life. This happens when he realize that he entered the house but didn't close the door, and find out Standley was in the house (In this scene everything was over for everyone in the house tbh.) so he was the one going outside, sleepwalking, having nightmare and showing symptoms. He was going outside by sleepwalking looking for his grandpa and his dog. I think it is one of the symptoms because later on we see Andrew seeing nightmares as well which probably got sick from Travis when they start painting together. So it is not a normal type zombie movie where infection spreads from fluids such as bite or saliva, but it spreads from air showing slow symptoms and infecting as many people as possible. Which is crazy if you ask me.

      If you watch the movie, Travis isn't really that incompetent. Some of the stuff Nerd Explains says, like Travis going looking for his dog, are stated too much like facts in my opinion. That's because it isn't certain that Travis did so. The movie leaves a lot of stuff up to the viewers interpretation, and there are numerous theories about certain parts. A huge theory was that Travis DID open the door, but that he did it while sleep walking. And because it's heavily implied that sleep walking is a symptom of the illness in the movie, one of the most prominent theories was that Travis was infected the entire movie. The movie doesn't answer every question on purpose, to put you in the mindset of the characters. The major theme of the film is what paranoia and fear do to people, and it does an excellent job immersing you in that. I'd wholeheartedly recommend watching it, because it's a phenomenal movie.

Could be another thing. And the movie also kept me wondering if the virus had some kind of zombie mutation or something, because of the dreams with the infected with black eyes. I mean, it's not a zombie virus itself because, for example, Travis didn't become one, he just died. But couldn't be other people that got infected and turned into zombies out there? Maybe one of them did that to the dog. I suppose I made up this part because before seeing the movie I was waiting for some zombies to appear (not that I was disappointed at all), but I don't know, maybe it was more dangerous out there than we (or the characters) know. @@aarons6935 The point is that it's unpredictable, especially with a hard ridged item like a rifle butt. It is not completely, or even near completely, dependent on the amount of force used. A strike with a boxing glove following boxing rules may be mildly predictable, but that is simply not comparable to smashing someone in the head at unawares with what is essentially a heavy, ridged stick.

    Pro tip- its better to have a displaced light like holding one in your hand because when you have a rail mounted light all the assailant has to do is aim right at the light hit you in the face/chest
    But if you are holding it LEO style resting you’re firing arm over your flashlight arm if they shoot for the light it will only hit your shoulder or miss you entirely
