    In January 2020, an emergency alert was broadcast in Ontario Canada stating there was a “nuclear incident” at one of the power plants. It took a couple of hours before they admitted it was supposed to be a test and not a real message to go out. Scared the heck out of me when it went off.

    I remember I had a radio alert when I was in a car with my parents.
    So we were on a highway headed home and it was raining really hard,the alert came up and I counted how many times it came up. I counted about 10 or maybe 11 alerts. I think I saw a car slip but gain back its balance when we were almost home,but I wasn't scared to death. And it was at night as well,we don't get many alerts here in Texas besides Amber Alerts,which mostly happen on weekends where I'm from. I remember the 2019 tornado,I heard the alert and it was when I was trying to fall asleep. I stayed up until 10,when the storm ended. My dad kept going out the front door the look for the tornado,it said on channel 5 (In my city) it was on the street ACROSS from my house. We didn't have a basement so I hid in the hallway,it scared me a bit but I remember those times very well.

    I remember having at least 5 EAS tests a year when I was between the ages of 5 and 8 for some reason and a few were weather related and amber alerts but most of them were random tests that didn’t mention anything deadly or alert-worthy. I just remember being traumatized by the loud sound and bawling so hard cause it would get so quiet and my shows would turn off. I always went to my mom when the tests happened who just sat still through it and acted all chill about it and I got so angry about the fact that I couldn’t sit still through it like she could so I began to make the assumption that the government was doing the tests on purpose to scare me cause at the time I didn’t know what they were really for and that everyone in the area got one 😂

    The voice over the FEMA test is Sean Hannity, a conservative radio talk show host that's big on conspiracy theories and whatnot of the like. I work at a radio station so I can explain how his program got crossed over with the television signal.
    EAS systems are set so that if you trigger one station, you trigger all of them within the assigned area. So if you trigger a local radio station's signal, the receivers at the local TV station will pick up the trigger and sent out the alert simultaneously. What probably happened here though was the result of broadcast delay, so it was possible the that radio station that was relaying Mr. Hannity's program at the time had already completed its test and had returned to regular programming and the TV picked that up instead. Most alerts you hear actually originate from radio stations so sometimes you might hear your local radio broadcaster underneath an alert kr over it altogether. Hence is the fun of broadcasting!

  • @SpaceboyYT
    @SpaceboyYT ปีที่แล้ว +20

    The Scariest Emergency Broadcast was #1. The least scariest was the EBS on the 1992 LA Riots.
    The EBS (Emergency Broadcast System) was a system mainly used for National/Statewide Emergencies only. Because of this, the EBS only used the attention tone to warn people. In 1997 (I think), the EAS (Emergency Alert System) was introduced. This system played 3 scary tones, and in most times, the attention tone. Some Civil Authorities (who use the Dave Text To Speech voice) won’t use the attention tone because it’s not required. It’s just there to grab your attention. The first 3 tones you hear are not meant to scare you. These are S.A.M.E. headers, and with special EAS equipment, broadcasters can use those S.A.M.E headers to send warnings to the public.
    Example #1: ZCZC-PEP-EAN
    ZCZC: I don’t know what that means
    PEP: Primary Entry Point System
    EAN: Emergency Action Notification
    Example #2: ZCZC-WXR-TOR
    WXR: This is used for National Weather Service issued warnings.
    TOR: Tornado Warning
    The voice has been another scary factor. When the EAS was used in the 1990s and early 2000s, they used a voice called “Imperfect Paul” which kinda sounded like old school Microsoft Sam.
    Eventually, in 2002 they replaced Imperfect Paul with a voice that was once known as Craig (now AT&T Mike).
    From 2003-2016, the Speechify Tom Text To Speech voice was used for Warnings and Watches with the Console Replacement System (CRS). Everyone in the EAS community liked it, mainly for effectively grabbing peoples attention and giving them nightmares. Tom’s voice was capable of being altered to adjust the urgency of his speech. Along with Tom, Donna (now AT&T Crystal), was used for Watches, Advisories, and sometimes warnings on the NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards Network. The Imperfect Paul voice was still there, but only talking during the Station ID’s.
    In 2016, the CRS was replaced with the Basic Messaging Handler (BMH) due to the computers that the NWS was using were nearing the end of their lifecycle. Instead of transferring Tom’s voice to a newer software, the National Weather Service brings out the new VoiceText Paul voice. Although some people hated the voice due to not grabbing peoples attention. The Warning sound on my Midland Weather Radio does that for me already. The voice was also impacting the NOAA Weather Radio Network. Paul speaks slower than Tom did (although other states sped up his voice and not Colorado or San Diego), making it hard to get around the daily weather forecast. The CRS had a 2 minute 30 second limit for speaking on emergency alerts. However, the BMH reduced that to 2 minutes. Tom will most likely never come back, unless they make the voice a part of the SAGE Digital ENDEC Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) or Digital Alert System’s Digital Encoder-Decoder (DASDEC).

    We had drills in school for a nuclear attack from Russia but for some reason I was more scared of the shadows of trees coming through my window at night or thinking something would grab my foot if I put it down on the floor to go pee. So I’d jump away from the bed n run. LOL

    Here’s a story:
    So I remember a severe thunderstorm, my cousins were playing outside my grandma quickly yelled for them to get back inside, she saw it was getting dark along with the clouds looking like they are about to release rain. Then lightning striked on that same spot. I gasped and started recording the tv with my tablet checking for a eas warning. We got an EAS warning on her tv cause she was watching Lauren Lake, it said something like this
    Your local authorities have issued a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for Wayne, Macomb, St. Clair (those are all parts of Michigan) (I don’t remember having my phone yet)So I checked the weather and there was a cloud with a lightning bolt icon. (That meant thunderstorm) I then panicked and showed it to grandma. She was kinda scared too so I went to the window, Me and my cousins watched as the sky slowly turned cloudy grey. (A greenish gray kinda) (I was shocked and I think I still have the footage on my tablet, I need to unlock it.) Now I have another story:
    So I was at my dad’s mom’s apartment (my other grandma’s apartment) And then I checked my LG Stylo 6 and it said an EAS warning. It said: Your local authorities have issued a FLASH FLOOD WARNING for Wayne, New Baltimore, Oakland, (these were also parts of Michigan) I was scared cause we were currently in New Baltimore and most of my brothers lived in Oakland. So I asked her “Grandma, is this real?” Then I gave her my phone and she saw the EAS notification. I panicked and went to go call my auntie out. She said that was definitely real and then grandma put on a movie (I remember it being Suicide Squad, she really loved those type of movies) Then I checked out the window every 30 mins and one time when I checked everything outside was literally waterlogged. I took a picture and I still have it on that exact phone, I still am traumatized from these 2 moments but I may have to reset that phone, I forgot the password
    And that’s the 2 stories of why Michigan’s weather is TOTAL ASS.
    Edit: now i have like 3 more for some reason-
    1. This is not related to weather, thought i'd share it anyways.
    So it was around 10am on a calm morning, just chilling playing video games, then an eas test came on, i jumped 100 feet into the air and started screaming like there was no tomorrow-😂😂 After that ended, i got to enjoy a few seconds of TV until another test came on for some reason, talk about bad luck
    2. I was just watching youtube on my laptop until thunder striked, i got confused, ran back to the bed and started watching the sky Then my mom told me "When i was a kid, my dad would make sure everything was off during bad weather, Any electronics? NOT ANYMORE. Appliances? DUH." Thunder striked again some time after that, and it stopped at dawn.
    3. Not about weather, thought i'd share it anyways.
    It was around 4am in the morning, on my laptop then my mom heard something crash. My mom said "I hope that isnt my car.. Well, it wasnt, BUT IT WAS SOMETHING MORE HORRIBLE... My mom's car wasnt harmed that much but this car was demolished, someone was in it they were rushed to the hospital, and then the sky started flashing blood red. I was worried considering the noise from earlier.. Then 30 minutes later, i went on my laptop and put on my posts "A car literally set on fire near my house, All i know is theres a blue and red party going on.." The blue and red party meaned the police was now there, and by 5am i let everyone know the car was being towed and by sunrise everything was back to normal.

    • @Z4n3yB01
      @Z4n3yB01 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indiana is almost just as bad. we still have coastline along Lake Michigan (granted, easily the shortest of the states that border it, but still), so we get freezing winters, desert summers, rainy springs, and windy falls. oh, and don't forget we are close to Tornado Alley as well, and the upper two thirds of the state is almost completely flat.

    • @THE_funnyalt
      @THE_funnyalt ปีที่แล้ว

      I live in the UK and I don’t think we have drills like this. Also we don’t really have extreme weather, so this has never really happened with me. Worst weather experience was when a really heavy winter rain storm blocked the lower part of my town.
      Edit: ok this is bad timing **stares at the wildfires near my house**

    1:11 actually, the person in charge of these alarms misheard a transmission, and pressed the alert button, solely based on what he had heard. He was very remorseful for the panic he had caused, and obviously never meant any harm. he was just doing what he was told.

    Here’s a story (that literally just happened):
    WARNING: VERY LONG
    I was browsing the internet for fanart being the dummy I am, found a fandom page, and suddenly in wisconsin, (where I was,) a silver alert went off and no, it did NOT sound like any normal usa e.a.s. alarm. It sounded like my smoke alarm went off and I half panicked and half stayed calm. I thought it came from the warning on my fandom page that said ‘warning! the following page contains blood and swearing’ but no. When I realized the house wasn’t burning down or anything, I checked all my devices for some kind of amber alert or something. It went off on my phone, not the device I was using at the time and it said SILVER ALERT IN (CITY)! I knew it would be ok because I lived far away from the city, but it still really freaked me out at the time.
