I hate to break it to you but Jesus basically taught what this guy derisively calls moralistic therapeutic deism.
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him."
Jesus' simple love ethic has been replaced by man's systematic theology. Jesus simple teachings to love God and love your neighbor as yourself have been obliterated by high minded cosmic theology, namely penal substitutionary atonement. It's as if Jesus entire teaching ministry really doesn't matter, only the last 3 hours of his life matters.
Paul took Jesus's death and made that the gospel. But Jesus came to teach the kingdom of God, not penal substitutionary atonement.. the kingdom is within you.

    Don't you mean historic Paulianity?
Are you really saying that Jesus' teachings on loving your neighbor (i.e.sermon on the mount) is just a "byproduct"?

Listen to yourself. Not one reference to Jesus' own words here!

And you think penal substitutionary atonement, a doctrine based on vengeance, retribution and punishment is superior to Jesus' simple love ethic? How about a sermon on Jesus' teaching to go the extra mile for your worst enemy? To love your enemies? To forgive to the point of death as he did? Churches rarely teach this anymore. Churches largely teach churchianity and Paulianity. And Jesus is sprinkled in as a cosmic Christ whose entire teaching ministry is obliterated by the doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement. And here you are sidelining the teaching ministry of Jesus by naming it "moralistic therapeutic deism."
"He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him."
But you call it "moralistic therapeutic deism."

““Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.”
      ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭10‬:‭34‬ ‭NIV‬‬
“So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.”
      ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭2‬:‭22‬-‭23‬ ‭NIV‬‬
““Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.”
      ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭22‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭NIV‬‬
These are the words of Jesus. How do you reconcile this with the progressive view that Jesus is all love and no judgment/punishment? If we as image bearers were given an edict by God to institute justice systems that punish wrongdoers, why would we assume that God would do the opposite?
I promise there is beauty in the true gospel-which does include penal substitutionary atonement. God the Father and Jesus Christ are ONE (and of course the Holy Spirit). In acknowledging that, this means that God HIMSELF sacrificed HIMSELF and absorbed His own wrath so that we could be given new life in Christ. It was not an instance of “cosmic child abuse” but rather of self sacrifice in its truest form.
Saying this in love…but if you believe Jesus doesn’t carry the attributes of justice and wrath, then you have cancelled the fullness of His deity and are worshipping a different Jesus than the one revealed in scripture.
I know many people have been burned by legalistic Christians, so I understand the desire to find a different version of Christianity. But once you understand the true gospel, that’s when the real fruit of salvation comes forth and you can live freely within His grace, pursuing that which is righteous and good.
Much love, my friend ❤ I will pray for you!

So this guy is apparently too good, too smart and too theologically gifted to appreciate, let alone teach the SIMPLE moral teachings of Jesus. Why aren't you teaching what Jesus taught? Love your neighbor. Do good to those who spitefully use you. Forgive. Visit prisoners. Feed the hungry. Give to the poor. This is what you call moralistic therapeutic deism or works righteousness or whatever other derogatory term. You nullify Jesus love ethic and replace it with systematic theology and a cosmic Christ. Jesus came to teach us about the loving, non retributive, nature of God. If we want to live as sons of God we MUST practice and teach Jesus moral precepts.
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
