A smaller Spanish derby is the Galician Derby between the Celta de Vigo and el Deportivo da Coruña, being the teams of the two biggest cities in Galicia (the already mentioned Vigo and A Coruña), which themselves have a long-lasting rivalry. The funny part about the Galician Derby is that it has been basically cancelled since 2018, as the Deportivo has fallen pretty hard into Third Division, while the Celta is still in First Division.
Hilbert!!! First of all, love the football videos keep it up! Second of all, de Friese derby is a very interesting topic if you're looking for suggestions!
It's kinda funny in Germany. When Berlin was split, Hertha BSC and Union Berlin where friends. Both hated the StaSi Club Dynamo. Now Dynamo plays in 4th division and the other two clubs became rivals, devided by East vs West German heritage and socioeconomics (Hertha is more established, Union is more of a workers club. Also Hertha is the Old Lady vs Union has a younger fanbase)
They are, usually those rivalries come about when either 2 clubs are the biggest in the country and both compete for trophies or 2 are from the same location, there are exceptions but that's, for the most part, the rule
@@rogink yes, they are. But they never were supposed to be. Hertha has sunk millions and still relegated. Union has less money but plays Champions League
In Spain we call those "Guerras de campanario", belfry wars, as it does feel like two little towns bickering at each other because they're next to each other, for no reason other than tribalism.
Alcorcon, Leganés, Rayo Majadahonda, Fuenlabrada and Getafe are all from municipalities that are vary close to Madrid and seen as part of Madrid’s metropolitan area, but only Rayo Vallecano (which is mentioned in the video btw) is inside the actual city of Madrid.
Hello Hilbert. You can judge the rivalry by how I got some right stick on comments elsewhere for saying how much Atlético improved whilst I was watching them in the Europa Cup, some years back on terrestrial UK TV. They went on to play Real in the Champions League final a couple of years later. It was not as if I expressed a liking for the club, but it certainly got some people's back up. Interesting to see how they were linked to Athletic Club, who also played well in the Europa Cup, back when I was watching. Next time Celtic v Rangers? I might have understood how this could be controversial to comment on.
I was thinking about the Old Firm when he mentioned how politics decided your team. I guess the Glasgow clubs are all that is left of religious rivalries - at least outside N Ireland - but in the past it determined your support for Liverpool or Everton, Hibs v Hearts, Dundee v Dundee Utd. Fortunately those other clubs seem to have moved on...

You should do a video for the Yugoslav rivalries, there were a lot back then, and now as seperate nations a few have survived( Hajduk-Dinamo, Partizan-Zvezda)
Bernabéu was so based, we should go back to his ways. Also, you just straight up lied about the non-white Atlético team performing better than the fully white Real Madrid team. During the 70s Real Madrid won the league 5 times (6 if you count the 79/80 season) while Atlético won the league 3 times. Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey 3 times (4 times if you count the 79/80 season) while Atlético only won it 2 times. So you're just lying, the lesson is actually that you SHOULD have a fully white team lol. Also, correction, we have not won the Copa del Rey 40 times, we've only won it 20 times. But we have been in the final 40 times.
Wow they called the other team the Indian's because they hired player's who were not white and the other teams fan's embraced the nickname. If this was a story about an American sports team I can only imagine what people from Europe would say in the comments.
Well, to be honest, Real Madrid fans from Madrid are mostly nice people, but those who are fans of it from the rest of Spain, who have no fucking business being fans of a team from the capital and should instead support their regional teams, are in many cases absolutely bonkers and terrible people. Sadly, during the francoist era, the idea that RM was "the representative team of Spain" got so spread that too many people believed it, and now we have what we have. They would not have got their first 6 European Cups if not because Franco would mainline funds from taxes into the team to fulfill his dream of a team uniting Spain (hey, dude, you had, AND HAVE the Spanish national team for that, you know??? A team that takes part in international competitions and which DOES REPRESENT all Spaniards) into one fandom. RM would be a mostly irrelevant team if not for that. The same could be said about FC Barcelona, tbh, because many people, some from outside Catalonia, but mostly from inside Catalonia but not Barcelona, are ardent fans of it for POLITICAL reasons and have been for generations, as the team that represented the struggle against Franco. Both teams developed into the strongest in Spain and that has had a negative effect in the league overall. Imagine a league in which both Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Bilbao had like 3 or 4 teams EACH in the highest tier, like you get in other nations. Sadly, Madrid and Barcelona overshadow any other competitors. It's a miracle that Atletico de Madrid and Espanyol have any degree of relevance.
Unless you support a spanish team, Real Madrid is most peoples favoured team on the big stage. There is something special about winning the greatest trophies simple because you are a winner and not necessarily better than the opposition.
Can you stop insertign the absurd monolitic right/left wing divide to everything? its reductive and an extremely disingenuous way to reccontextualize history.
