The Madrid Derby: European Royalty vs “The Jinxed Ones” | Real vs Atletico | Roots of the Rivalry
Spain boasts some of the best football rivalries in the world. El Clasico has become one of the top fixtures in football as of late, but Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid in El Derbi Madrileño at times holds more weight, despite there being less on the line competitively. Claims of favouritism from Francisco Franco and his regime are pointed at each other, with El Pupas (Atletico) constantly underachieving and celebrating their misfortunes, while Real Madrid is synonymous with success - both in Spain, and in Europe. We’ll look at the first Madrid Derby, as well as their recent meetings in the 2014 Champions League final - where Real Madrid won La Decima - and the 2016 Champions League Final. Characters such as Vicente Calderon, Santiago Bernabeu Yeste, Diego Simeone and so many more feature in this video!

That first UCL final when they lost in extra time was heartbreaking for me as a neutral and when Ramos equalized i knew it was over. i kinda developed a soft spot for them even more now after watching this .They should rename their stadium Simeone for what his achieved with very little spending there, also taking the crown from Barca and Real when Leo and Ron were scoring 40-50 games a season isnt no easy feat, the mans a legend.

A detail about Atleti losing to Real in the 2014 UCL final that a lot of people don't know is that they had not conceded all season with the back four and goalkeeper that started that game. I don't exactly remember who was in the defence but I remember that at around the 85th minute, Filipe Luis came off. Then they conceded. If he'd just been left on, I think they would've won.

Oh man... you almost made it sound like Atletico have never won anything. They are the 3rd biggest club in terms of titles and fans in one of the two biggest leagues in the world. They have 10 La Ligas, 10 spanish cups, 4 or 5 spanish supercups, 3 Europa Leagues, 3 european supercups, 1 Cup winners cup and 1 intercontinental cup (yes, they were even world club champions back in 1974). They have also been 3 times runners up in the CL, much like The Netherlands in the WC. They are a HUGE team in europe, theyre just unlucky to be playing in the same league as Real Madrid and Barcelona. Id love to see other big european clubs have these two in their local competitions, its a fucking nightmare, but yet there they are winning titles and competing with them.

I remember seeing my first Madrid Derby. Two years ago Champions League Final, had to stay up for three hours, walking into a break area from time to time. Shots of the crowd between the action on the pitch. A young redhead in Atleti colors watching nervously as the game grinds. She was probably scared from past memories. Carrasco coming close to scoring on one occasion.
I didn’t catch the penalties. I just saw Zidane celebrating on the field with Real. That’s all I had to know.

When i was watching 2014 champions league final. The commentators were kept on saying it was impossible to win champions league by atleti. But till the 92nd minute they some how hung on but they count do it at the last 20 sec. Then i knew it was impossible to win the game. At that day i became atleti , the fight the spirit they showed it was mesmerizing. The moment came again in 2016. But the same thing happened again. I didn't knew about el pupas stuff till we lost in semi finals agains madrid in 2017. But still there is a hope. One day we will win champions league.
I fell in love with Atletico since 2014. The first time I saw them was UCL Final. A team unknown against top teams to get to the final, I was just mesmerized how far they went. Although a tough defeat, their hard work is recognized. One day we will win UCL! Aupa Atleti!!❤️

@@neeleshgoswami6174 you're right, I think we need to move on, the players we have are being restricted because of the defensive football. The attack has been getting worse over the years. Apart from the attack the mentality has been getting worse, in big games we tend to attempt to defend for 90min without attacking, that just doesn't work yet Simeone still does it. Also 2016 we didn't just lose because of Griezmann or juanfran we lost because this very reason, I remember when we equalized , all of a sudden we decided to sit back till penalties.

Ypu said Rodri has been the weak link? really? he has been our best tackling midfielder throughout the season,I think you are underestimating his contribution to the team.Saul on the other hand has been our worst midfielder,he isn't a good tackler or passer, he is invisible in most games. you're right about koke , he has been average but not just this season but for 2 seasons now in my opinion. I would love to see a few more german derbys like the Revierdeby between Dortmund and Schalke or the Hamburger Derby between HSV and St. Pauli currently placed in first and third place of the second division. Next season the Nordderby probably will take place again between HSV and Bremen or the History of 'Der Klassiker' (don't like the name) between BVB and Bayern
Atletico's history is completely heartbreaking, they played two years in 2nd division, they lost three Champions League finals (2 against their biggest rivals Real Madrid) and many other setbacks

You don´t mention that Atlético´s first stadium, the Metropolitano (1924-1966) was in one of the most popular and rich neighbourhoods of Madrid; at that time, Bernabéu was located on the outskirts of the city, on a village called Chamartín de la Rosa. Atlético have won more finals against Real, and 9 of the 10 red and white Cups have been won in their stadium. You get things mixed together and try to tell a narration of: "victory vs failure", that is false, and always has been. If we are failure, the rest of teams in Spain ¿What are they? ¿shit?
The video is in the perspective of the Real vs Atleti, of course Atleti is a great team, one of the best teams in Spain at least, but for an outsider is hard to compare this rivarly without doing special mention to the European competition, and there's where this narrative of "victory vs failure" comes from
Again, that doesn't mean that the Atleti is a bad team, plenty of teams in Europe never won te Champions and that doesn't make them bad teams, but it's easy to see why someone would get that wrong idea of "success vs failure"

@Christian Hernandez Cruz Azul and América are both rivals in Mexico City. Cruz Azul has his golden age in the 70's meanwhile América in the 80's. By now, América is the most champion with 13 titles. Cruz Azul doesn't win a championship since winter 97 and since that has been 2nd place over 10 times (including Concachampions and Copa Libertadores). Cruz Azul it's seems as a loser team with so bad luck that mexican fans take photos with germans, coreans and swedish wearing Cruz Azul's shirts to "sabotage" and give bad luck to the rivals. In 2013 they loose the final vs América after winning the first half and loosing the second at last minute with a goal scored by América's goalkeeper. Then, in last december, Cruz Azul was leader of the rank and was the season in which Cruz Azul return to play as local in Estadio Azteca, sharing the stadium with América. The final was between both and, again, Cruz Azul loose in the second half. Also América it's seem like the more rich team, linked with the principal TV channel in México, which is linked with the government. Cruz Azul, on the other hand, was created by a cooperative of a cement plant, Cementos Cruz Azul, which still exist today. So, I see this simmilarities between América- Cruz Azul and Real-Atleti.
