    Never go to a mechanic and say this needs to be done. You give them a couple of descriptions of the problem and let them do a diagnostic and test drive to let you know whats wrong. Then you go from there.

    • @marleonetti7
      @marleonetti7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      this was a case where the other symptoms could not be detected until the head gasket was repaired . even the other mechanics would not have detected it until the car was running with the new head gasket in place . alot of diagnosis of vehicles cannot even be made until certain repairs are done first . the problem is that the plaintiff did not realize this fact about cars .

      You don't go to a mechanic unless you know what is wrong first. You don't let them tell you what is wrong as they will always pick the most expensive job. If you know nothing about cars, either learn or buy a new car and have the dealer service it under warranty.

    What everyone in the comments is missing here is that when thr head gasket is replaced, the timing chain or belt has ro be removed and reinstalled. This means that if the timing chain or belt dont get reinstalled properly... the timing won't be correct, which means the valves will come in contact with the pistons.
    Long story short, the original mechanic didn't do his job correctly, made the problem worse due to falling to follow correct timing procedure and was 100000% responsible for that damage. Plaintiff should have brought in an expert document.

    • @lucaschambers8209
      @lucaschambers8209 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or bring in a TH-cam video to show proof on that valves and piston sleeves are part of a head gasket job. Dude should have got the cost of the repair to be fixed correctly.

      he said it was a grand am gt so it has a 2.8 or 3.1 V6, no need to remove the timing chain for head gaskets, I think he mixed up the pushrods intake and exhaust are different one is longer than the other, just about 10 mm, just enough for a valve to hit a piston when it warms up

      Yes and no. More than likely the first shop messed up the timing and the valves hit the pistons causing damage. Anyone with basic engine knowledge can see this as the main reason for the sudden engine stopping and valve damage after a head gasket repair....

      He said it was a Grand Am GT so yeah they all came with those shitty 3400 V6's - It was almost always the lower plenum gaskets (intake manifold) - But if you let the problem persist or let the engine overheat then replacing with new gaskets wont fix the problem, hence why he practically had to pay for a rebuilt engine. Car probably wasn't even worth the $750 he originally was going to pay lol.

    • @ryans413
      @ryans413 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Stressless2023 the engine is not garbage it’s a pretty simple basic engine just the gaskets were awful which led to the engines failing. If you replace the gaskets the engine is very reliable if you let the engine overheat from the bad gaskets then it’s garbage.

    • @Stressless2023
      @Stressless2023 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ryans413 Well the way I feel about that is something can't be considered "reliable" if it has catastrophic defects that need to be addressed in order to make it "reliable", which is why I consider them to be garbage engines - I've wrenched on many GM 60 and 90degree pushrod engines with this issue, some savable and some not caught in time, that isn't what a good engine is in my eyes and definitely not to the blindsided and unaware owner who has to yank it out and replace or rebuild it. But to each their own.

    I would bet dollars to donuts the first shop messed up the timing when they reinstalled the head which caused damage to the valves. If the judge knew a little about what is jnvovled with a head gasket job, its evident to see where the problem most likely arised from. Valves just dont bend out of no where unless its out of timing or parts were severely worn. Being a 2004 model year isnt a reason and further shows ignorance. The head had to be removed again [and another head gasket replaced] to replace the bad valve [and a spring {he mentioned} and the push rods and rockers and lifters were not adjusted properly] I can tell simply from the receipt that he had [as a mechanic] that the first guy totally botched the head gasket job [should have found the bad valve when head was off and did not put the lifters/push rods/and rockers in proper adjustment] That is why it was running so poorly AND that is why he was willing to let him have it for just the $400 and not the rest of the 750 just to get it out of there because he knew he messed up the repair. Plaintive probably should have got the whole $400 back. • @Marc-King777
      @Marc-King777 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, the plaintiff did well. He just didn't have the proof in writing from the second shop that indicated that whoever had previously worked on the bad head gaskets (the defendant), had actually caused more damage to the engine than what was there before. And I think the judge would have ruled in his favor had the plaintiff had that in writing, but he didn't, so he lost.
      Furthermore, I think the judge was on the right path when she drilled the defendant about "what motive would the plaintiff have to involve the police to get his car back if the defendant wasn't holding the plaintiff's car for an unreasonable amount of time." I think it's obvious that the defendant was keeping the car because he knew he had messed up because he didn't know what he was doing, and so he kept the car so long in an attempt to fix the damage he had done, but just couldn't. However, for some reason, the judge didn't take this into account in her ruling, when she should have. In short, yes, the kid should have gotten the $3,000.

    It seems to me the defendant mechanic was at fault, and showed signs of guilt.
    Changing the head gasket involves taking the engine apart , and a lot of things are involved when putting it back together.
    The plaintiff should have gotten a definitive statement from the second mechanic that the first repair was not done properly . Not that additional things were needed.
    However , the plaintiff should just get a refund of his deposit , unless there is proof that the engine got damaged because of his repair , in which case the mechanic pay for the additional parts in order to fix the problem he caused.
    Anyways , the car is a piece of junk. I would just scrap it and use the money to get another vehicle. 😊

    When you come to court it's your responsibility to prove your case. If you don't have sufficient evidence that's on you. First mechanic looks at the vehicle and says oh you need a new head gasket and everything will magically be fixed. Goes to the second mechanic and he replaces it's so he should be paid for his services. It's not second mechanics fault that the 2004 vehicle has additional problems. It's a simple contract case and doesn't need to be diluted with all this technical stuff.

  • @lucaschambers8209
    @lucaschambers8209 ปีที่แล้ว

    Should have brought a TH-cam video showing that valves and piston sleeves are part of a completed head gasket job. First mechanic should have to pay for a new head gasket job since he didn't do it correctly.

  • @ilsl04
    @ilsl04 ปีที่แล้ว

    Everything the judge reads can be messed up if you do not put the head back on correctly. If it didn't need a valve job before the head gasket was replaced, then the mechanic did not time the engine correctly after the gasket was replaced

      @DonziGT230 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shadyshinichi2JZAre you serious? Do you understand that with a pushrod engine it doesn't matter if the engine is at top dead center or not? This isn't a 2JZ, or whatever other overhead cam engines you might think you have some knowledge about. The cam is in the block so removing heads has no impact on cam timing. The guy even talked about the pushrods so there's no excuse for not knowing it was a pushrod engine.

    You go to a mechanic and say fix this. They do and you complain because your old car has something else wrong. Maybe it wasn't the head gasket to blame to begin with that was the problem, but that would be on you and not the mechanic! Good call because the mechanic did what he was supposed to...but it was funny because he barely spoke and looked bored through the whole thing!

      That wasn't the point. No, the age of a car is certainly not an excuse for sub-par repair; however, the point is, if you take a very old car in for a repair, more likely than not, there are bond to be other things wrong with it, especially if it's a car you just newly acquired where you don't know its maintenance/repair history.
