Thanks for this! I stopped by dollar tree yesterday for about 5 min and for some reason I had never looked in the good section. There's so much! I got chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, broccoli, mushrooms, pinto beans, rice, almond milk, stir fry mix, and two microwaveable bean and rice bowls. A ton of food and only $13.
Budgeting better with my groceries has been on my mind with the rising prices. This kind of video is very helpful for me and I am sure many other people right now. I try to budget best I can but I know I can always learn. I’m making lots of food for my cooking channel so I use a lot of food, so every penny I can save on groceries counts. I hope that we can continue to learn from each other. Never stop learning and growing!
Thank you for this video! I'm thankful that I have many grocery store options around, but as a lower-income vegan, knowing that the dollar tree is there for me to stretch my grocery budget is such a lifesaver. This video convinced me to go check it out sometime this week!
My dollar trees carries vegetable spring rolls that are also vegan and delicious. You get 10 for $1. It's unbelievable. I've also found vegan samosas, battered mushrooms, onion rings, various types of potatoes/fries and a good selection of fruits and vegetables in the frozen section. This video reminds me I need to go back there soon!
In addition to what you mentioned, Dollar Tree also has potato gnocchi that's vegan, but I love the idea of making smoothies with the frozen fruit & soy milk!
This was such a helpful video Toni! I live in a small town in East Texas and I'm trying to showcase how easy and affordable it can be to shop on a plant based diet. This is a great idea for a video I can do!
This is pretty cool, wouldn't have thought of going to Dollar Tree's fridge section, I usually walk in for parchment paper, foil and napkins. Next time I'm there ill be sure to check out their food💚
Wish we had a Dollar Tree in our little town. Instead of Dollar General. You can freeze left over cooked beans. :) And also did you see the new Ninja Foodi? Its a Pressure Cooker and air fryer all in one. And you are suppose to be able to cook beans in 3 minutes. :) Going to try it tomorrow. You can also put beans in that rice and veggies. I just started plant based. :) Great video. :)
Love it! So excited for you! If you ever need any additional resources, I have a ton of free recipes on my blog, plantbasedonabudget.com as well as free meal plans and guides as well. Rooting for you!
gday luv exactly what I wanted I use the fruit as a fruit salad with shredded coconut I love the Veggie patties yum thanks for the fried rice looks good dollar tree has tofu now.
I really enjoyed this video and thank you for the idea of separating the onions from the pepper mix to create a veggie stir-fry - very clever! I would love for you to do a video on plant based shopping/meals at ALDI supermarket. Your videos are helping me to make the transition to plant based eating without feeling overwhelmed.
Thank you for sharing! I had no idea that the Dollar Tree had so many plant-based options. I'm excited to check out my local store. I always have enjoyed watching your videos and using your meal plans on your website. Thanks again!
I am definitely making this lifestyle was waaaay harder than it needs to be. Good grief. I love this idea jist throwing items together to make a great meal. I waste a whole day hunting down recipes, making menus, clipping coupons, and shopping 3 different stores. Sigh. I have so many things in my pantry to use up I could eat for a week in sure. I would love some more like this maybe a video about what's in the fridge amd what to toss in from pantry. Idk. Thats my issue. If I dont have a recipe I have no idea what to make.
Same here! I'm slowly getting better with it though. With a one year old, I'm being forced to come up with recipes on the fly sometimes to make sure she gets a nutritious meal. I'm stressed out though!!
I go to Dollar Tree all the time. I always get frozen fruit and veggies there. I also grab rice and the other day I found some brown rice stir fry noodles. I usually just look around and see what’s plant based and vegan before I go to stores like Aldi and Walmart.
I really liked the concept of this video, but I def think seasonings would have made it soo much better especially since DT does sell onion/garlic powder. I neeeeed salt in my life lol. I always make veggie fried rice with my leftover rice so good!
I buy the beans canned and raw the canned lima beans are yummy canned peaches and pears black olives red cabbage in a jar yum frozen fruit veggie patties feta cheese cheddar cheese cream cheese frozen veggies stir fry my favorite turkey bacon 20.ounce orange juice soy milk spring rolls canned collars greens and tomato corn and okra saltines fig bars cornbread spicy catsup coconut flakes luv this concept hope you continue
Not where I was expecting you to go...when I saw all the spices lined up from garlic powder to basil, I thought pasta sauce! :) I think this is a very cool idea for a series.
I shop at 99 only to get the best vegan food value. I checked out my nearest Dollar Tree when I moved to this area ( San Diego Normal Heights) but did not see any food. I will give it another look having seen this video. Thanks.
Thanks. The idea of sampling different stores is brilliant. I look forward to the 99 cent store (lots fresh vegies )shopping. I have an instant Pot (a gift) and am on a fixed income, so I shop at the 99 store alot. my problem is that I hate to cook!..
I really like them. They are more like a potato pancake type of texture with real veggie chunks inside with good spices. I made them in my air fryer and they turned out the best that way.
They were better than I expected. They have 5 grams of protein, which is less than some of the others, and were made from mostly veggies. The base was potato and it had some cumin, so it reminded me a bit like a vegetable samosa. :)
I have been following you for a while and love your ideas. This one puzzles me though. You never did not mention how the veggie patties tasted after you said they looked suspect. Also those spices had a chemical warning for birth defects so not sure why you showed them. I know you didnt buy them but...
That's your opinion. Others may like them. I consider them to be vegetable fritters, not burgers. They're made with decent ingredients, without any junk ingredients. I serve them with vegan chickpea sauce on top (vegan protein), and garlic bread (starch)on the side, & a fruit for dessert, for a complete meal. Oh, that makes a super filling & cheap meal. The "fritters" are 50 cents each, bread, garlic powder, dried parsley, a can of chickpeas, can of fruit, plant beverage & cornstarch/flour (to make sauce), margarine/butter, can all be gotten at a $1 store, & last several servings, making each meal around $1.
I'm a professional cook, so I have invested, but I don't think the brand of blender matters. And in the video, I give specific instructions for what to do for those who don't have pressure cookers.
Thanks for the suggestion. I admire that you share my passion for helping people eat healthy for very little money. As I mentioned, any blender will do for this recipe, and I have ample instructions (including youtube videos -- you can find the link in my post) on how to boil rice without a pressure cooker, too. Thanks again!
Most people own a blender the brand doesn’t matter and the instant pot has a cult like following so a ton of people own them. Also just because someone shops at DT and budgets their money does not mean they can’t afford anything.
I've done this in a bullet blender and a thrift store rice cooker I got for ten dollars ..... clearly she is a professional and has invested in her tools....let's not be snarky and enjoy the knowledge being passed. Thanks again Toni 🤘you freaking rock

Glad it's helpful! Let me know how your Dollar Tree trip goes.
I also buy the frozen fruit! The pretzels are really high quality and minimally processed
Frozen fruit is the best!

They also have Cobblestone bread... it's around $2.50-$3.00 a loaf at the grocery store, $1 at DT!

You're so adorable, Toni. Love your vibe (AND your husband!).

I had no clue what I wanted to eat for lunch today, but after seeing your video I decided to have some Veggie fried rice. So good!
Isn't it so easy? I usually have brown rice and frozen veggies onhand and it comes together so effortlessly.

I think any store is always vegan friendly...there's rice and beans pretty much anywhere in the world!
I buy their taco shells, flour tortillas, nuts, olives, hot sauce, canned diced tomatoes, brown rice, red beans....
Good stuff

Very helpful, thanks for making this diet change easy & more affordable for me🐾🐾
Not where I was expecting you to go...when I saw all the spices lined up from garlic powder to basil, I thought pasta sauce! :) I think this is a very cool idea for a series.
That is great how cheap you did all those meals while still being healthy.
Wow!! Thank you so much for these ideas!
Thank you for watching.
Thank you! I love these type of videos. I was curious about the veggie patty, was it good? It looked good.
Aldi’s please. Love your simple ideas ❤

Ooh! Maybe I will do that store next. Thanks for the suggestion!

How were the Veggie Patties?
I really like them. They are more like a potato pancake type of texture with real veggie chunks inside with good spices. I made them in my air fryer and they turned out the best that way.

are the patties vegan? i.e. no regular suger, egg, or dairy
Will you do the .99 store too? I have both in my town. :)
I will definitely put that on the list. Thank you!
Man dollartree better 99 cent store better California yes but I rather do Malibu california
Great presentation
Thank you!
Thank you!!!
Course!
GREAT JOB!!! 🎉
Thanks so much! :)
Thank you
Course! Hope you enjoyed the video :)
How was the vegan burger?
Are you concerned about Organic/Conventional/GMO at all?
Dt has some organic and white rice that is Non GMO.
Garlic powder, soy sauce, siracha, etc @ the dt!!!
I just left Dollar Tree before seeing this video 😩
Next time! :)
You budget well
Those portions looked unrealistically small. No offense meant, maybe it was a trick of the photography that made it look that way.
I have been following you for a while and love your ideas. This one puzzles me though. You never did not mention how the veggie patties tasted after you said they looked suspect. Also those spices had a chemical warning for birth defects so not sure why you showed them. I know you didnt buy them but...
Why not fresh vegetables ?
I think that’s too much plastic 😢
Dollar tree veggie burgers I don't get those they are gross.
That's your opinion. Others may like them. I consider them to be vegetable fritters, not burgers. They're made with decent ingredients, without any junk ingredients. Nice but ain't nothing really that healthy unless it's organic items. Still better than alot of things tho nice lol
Cause everyone who shops at the dollar store can afford a vitamix and a rice cooker like that...
I'm a professional cook, so I have invested, but I don't think the brand of blender matters. And in the video, I give specific instructions for what to do for those who don't have pressure cookers.
Toni Okamoto then why not do a revised version using the tools and techniques that more people are likely to already have available to them?
Thanks for the suggestion. I admire that you share my passion for helping people eat healthy for very little money. As I mentioned, any blender will do for this recipe, and I have ample instructions (including youtube videos -- you can find the link in my post) on how to boil rice without a pressure cooker, too.
