I was raised on a beef cattle farm, parents still raising them. I stopped eating red meat at age 10 when they butchered my favorite cow. Gradually since then, I’ve been changing my eating habits to now being 98% vegan. I will be 50 this year so it’s been a long slow process. I’m so grateful for so many vegan TH-cam channels, vegan cookbooks, recipes on Pinterest, etc. It’s so easy to make vegan food and it’s also less expensive than buying meat.
I bought The Cookbook Which Shall Not Be Named in 2017 when i switched to WFPB after watching What the Health one weekend. It was my go to book for years when i worked at the office. Since i ate like a typical Midwestern person, Toni's book seemed exotic with berebere, miso and jackfruit. I still love the miso pea soup, sweet potato chili and Ethiopian lentil stew!
I love the recipes because I had most of the ingredients but could slowly increase variety in my spices and pantry. This was such an interesting interview and update, thank you!
Great chat! Do you know how many people I see in drive thrus. Here in Ontario, 2 combos is $25+ . That's a alot of beans and rice. Make your beans from scratch. Cheap solution. Carrots, peas, frozen vegs....can make several meals for $25.
It was really nice to hear Toni's many thoughts and ideas. Add silken tofu to your morning oatmeal for more protein. I don't like protein powders, or even the idea of them. As you already mentioned, adding white beans to oatmeal is another way. Also, you can make a lovely hummus from red lentils as a change from hummus made with chickpeas. We use hummus in so many ways: as a spread on the plate before adding roasted vegetables; as a thick spread in sandwiches/wraps; as a dip/snack; as a base for some salad dressings; and so on. I hope that helps.
Hi Jeremy and Toni, sorry I missed this Live! I enjoyed watching the replay very much. It was very interesting to learn about the process of cookbook writing and recipe development. Toni, you are a lovely person. I’ve watched the review of your cookbook video too. I’m so glad Jeremy brought you to his channel! I borrowed your cookbooks online from my library but didn’t have a chance to cook from them yet. Will borrow them again and maybe pick one up on Amazon. Thanks to everyone for all you do! ❤
Oh, also, I ❤ that she shopped at Walmart, all too often influencers and cookbook people shop at Whole foods and Sprouts, which are pricey for some. Walmart does have a huge selection of stuff wfpb cooks use everyday!
thanks so much for having Toni on your show! Love her Plant Based on a Budget Quick and Easy - and your review of it! I recently made the Pasta Alfredo which was amazing.
I love Toni! Thanks for doing this interview! It was really interesting to hear about the progress that Toni went through as a cookbook author and her story as a person who eats plant based. You mentioned wanting to eat more protein. I would love to see a review of no meat athlete (if you have time, Jeremy) I'm not sure what he eats or is about, but I think that book might be key for my husband. I have a hold on it through our library.
I also loved the better than bullion jars but recently found out they’re not gluten free! It’s amazing how many things I’ve had to and continue to have to give up!!
Toni was wonderful-open, unassuming and just lovely- it was a great interview with lots of topics covered! My bugaboo is the GMO in non organic tofu and the spraying of beans and lentils as a drying agent-especially with kiddos eating them. Jeffrey Smith’s documentary “ Genetic Roulette & I think also “Secret Ingredient” were horrifying to me. I know nothing is truly organic any longer but I hate paying to be poisoned ever so slightly😮. Organic Matters in BC has bulk organic dry goods (free shipping over $150). Online Organics in Ontario also but they’re pricier. If you follow the dirty dozen/clean fifteen it’s more affordable-we’re a family of 6! I’m trying to grow basic veg then freeze/dehydrate lots and shop summer markets for what I can’t grow easily- and process their stuff-haha. So many solutions like drying summer herbs for the winter etc…Freeze Fresh is a great book, pickling is easier than canning. Groceries are nuts now so I have to get frugal and inventive😊
Thanks for the great interview. I hadn't heard of Toni before and so glad to "meet" her. She has so many great ideas. Do you know if her recipe book(s) have instant pot recipes?
You mentioned you have a notebook with your recipes in it. I've been trying to find a way to organize all my recipes. Please do a show on that. Whenever I want a specific recipe I'm going through piles of papers. First I start in the file folders then I have to go to the pile I haven't refiled. Help!
There are protein calculator’s online that are very helpful. Many plant based doctors I’ve heard say you should not add extra protein to your foods, not sure what to think about it. Should we add protein or not - I’m not sure. Why do we need to add protein? Thanks for all your tips and ideas for cooking and saving money. Love all you do.
I think it would be cool to do videos on how you would modify the things in your own cookbook to improve them or adjust them, and people can take notes in the cookbooks that they own. Just a thought.
Well her for cookbook and you for website. I think it's helpful to see how you all adjust your own recipes over time. Thanks for the great channel. Watching from Wilmington, NC. @@pbwithjeremy
On a bit of a different tack - and it's not just time-saving that's the thing. It's space-saving cooking that's an issue as well - certainly in many British kitchens. It seems as if Americans often have enviable large kitchens. But the size of many British kitchens leaves a lot to be desired. I've got a bigger kitchen than some of us - but I have to squeeze up to get the various gadgets in and enough worksurface space. Our modern detached "executive" type homes are often built with decent size kitchens - but much of our housing has kitchen size issues (you should see how little space there is in one of our 1930's homes for instance if they've not built an extension on the back !!! Small....). Many of our 1960s/1970s kitchens are still the size they were built and the house-owner hasn't added an extension to increase their size either (yep my last one was part of a 1970s extension on a Victorian terrace house. So a lot of us do have the size issue complicating things and meaning we're lucky if we can get in more than the sheer basics of a cooker/smallish fridge and freezer space and that's about our lot...and so I think it would be useful to have a programme specially focused on cooking this way in tiny kitchens (ie as many of us just don't have the room for the various wfpb gadgets).
This almost sounds like it's own TH-cam channel! I do appreciate your challenges. I try to suggest how to make things without the tools when possible. I'll aim to keep this mentality going forward when possible. THank you Eliza!!!
You do not need an Instant pot or Vitamix or air fryer or food processor to eat WFPB and you don’t need expensive vegan items/ products like nutritional yeast, alternate tofus, exotic fruits, cashews and nuts. You can do it with a stove, oven, microwave and a knife to cut veggies. It can be done on a budget and cheaper than eating meat & dairy. Saw some of this live, some later. Thanks!!😊
100% of those items, the Vitamix is the most cost effective and money savings potentially - so if you're going to splurge - that's the one AND like Toni said - you can sometimes find them in Freecycle online groups where people are giving their old ones away, etc....
Absolutely! I didn't have anything high quality in my kitchen for my first 10+ years of being plant-based. :) It sure does make life easier to have knives that cut smoothly and a lid to steam rice, though.
My Vitamix changed my life! I bought a refurbished Vitamix, dropped a spoon and ruined the blade in 1week. They replaced the whole blender for free, 10-year warranty!
Jeremy, you should amend your pitch for your membership site: it’s the about the cost of a BAD cup of coffee. Good coffee at a barista is much more expensive (and not nearly as fun).
Su from Nashville: I cut myself with a very sharp knife putting dishes away. I had 8 stitches, but because it was a clean cut it healed so well you can't see where the cut was. Bled like a stuck pig, though.
The other brands of electric pressure cookers are so much cheaper. I have used my Cuisinart pressure cooker daily for over 10 years. Paid half the cost of instapot
Sorry to hear that - I actually can't control the amount of ads - and it's different for everyone, I think you can adjust your settings on TH-cam to ask for less ads.

No worries! Glad you heard it after :)
Wasn't able to watch live but have caught up now. Toni is a lovely lady and was interesting to hear her story.

Exactly!
People don't know how to cook.
The food pantry can't give away the veggies or dry beans and whole grains. They walk out with white bread and day old doughnuts
It was really nice to hear Toni's many thoughts and ideas.

Yes! I don't know what I didn't think of silken tofu in the moment!!!
I love watch Kelley. She makes delicious dishes and gives us so many tricks of how to do things😀
Toni is great. Thanks for this interview.
My pleasure!!!! I made a new friend :)
Thank you! :) What a sweet thing to say!

If you're trying to gain muscle (as we were discussing) then yes - but if you're just trying to maintain your body then likely not.
For women too much protein can leach calcium from your bones. Be careful.
I think it would be cool to do videos on how you would modify the things in your own cookbook to improve them or adjust them, and people can take notes in the cookbooks that they own. Just a thought.
Just trying to understand this suggestion - was this for Toni or myself?
