  • Here is an in-depth tutorial on "how to" learn, practice, and play the Prelude & Fugue in C minor BWV 847, Johann Sebastian Bach.
In this video, I explain step by step each section and give insight into an interpretation of the entire piece.
The first half of the video focuses on the Prelude, and the second half focuses on the Fugue.

Note; You can implement the exercise of the "Presto" section to the entire "Prelude" to improve your playing. (Except "Adagio," of course:)

    Accordion player here!
Performing this at an international contest tomorrow. I absolutely adore your advice on how much pressure shod be used for each note. I also play jazz piano, so the right hand for me is very simple, but the left hand, for the accordion, is quite the challenge. But despite the differences of the two intruments, everything you say is still a miracle of help.
Much love to your channel and you!

I learned the hard way that most people are not connoisseurs of fine things. I am trying to help some youths in my neighborhood (I'm 53) and they are into video game, tic tok and fighting. Not reading, not education, not practicing things that will give them a lifetime of pleasure and appreciation.

@@AECSRQ, I appreciate your kindness! I considered making a video about Bach/Siloti Prelude in B minor a few months ago. But it didn't happen. Emile Gilels was the teacher of one of my piano teachers, Milena Mollova. So, I am a massive fan of his pianism and the recording you mentioned. Hopefully, I will make a video about this Prelude sometime in the future. All the best!

This channel is absolutly amazing! I can't thank you enough for this gift of a channel. I'm actually thinking about paying for some lessons. I started piano at 14, advanced fairly quickly then at 18 took a turn to more modern music. Stopped playing altogether around 25. Now at 35, my interest and passion has come back after finding old sheet music and it feels like an unfinished chapter that i have to fulfill. 2 weeks later I'm practicing everyday and want to really learn the music not just play the notes. This channel has been a godsend for understanding the depth and expression of classical music!

I found your shorts with this prelude & fugue and followed your link in the comments.
Here I found out 32-min video about this composition. Awesome, I thought.
Then I heard your voice. And I almost died of pleasure.
Then I watched this awesome introduction. And I felt life in all its beauty and magnificence, motion and progression.

Not sure exactly what I'm getting into with this, but I've been learning about fugue structures and Bach's life the last year or so, first through An Evening in the Palace of Reason by Gaines and currently through Hofstadter's book on Gödel, Escher and Bach. I began learning how to read sheet music about three years ago and am not proficient yet at it, but there is a very strong appeal to me in the fugue structure. It satisfies something in me. I just printed the sheet music and have begun listening to your instructions. I appreciate your emphasis on body mechanics. As I slowly advance in piano I've begun paying close attention to my wrist movements and voice because the subtleties make an enormous difference. Thank you.

Why in Adagio notes from C to F are not "tenuto"?

Antune. This was amazing! I would love to hear a tutorial on the Rachmaninoff Etude Tableaux Op. 39 No. 9. It has so many differing characters, and is truly a great piece musically and technically.

Thank you for the comment! I love Rachmaninoff's Op.39 as a whole set, and I plan to make videos about some and eventually all of them. Thanks for the suggestion. All the best!

Great tutorial, I think best articulation for the first part (until 25 bar) is non legato. It is very difficult to achieve even sound playing like that and it would be great if it could be discussed in more detail

It is not a tutorial, it's a piece of art.

Glad you liked my teaching! Scriabin Op.42/4 isn’t in my repertoire, unfortunately. Hopefully, sometime in the future, I can cover it. Good luck with the exam!

@@Antune I was gonna say it must be a city in the Netherlands because there were so many bikes. Looks like a great city.

Hello dear music lovers. I have a problem. Is there anyone who can help? I have kawaii kdp90. I am interested in the romantic period and composition. and the beauty of the tone I get from the piano has a positive effect on my work. I only have the opportunity to practice with the grand piano a few days a week. My problem is this: When I record the sound of the piano I practice at home using the record button and listen to it from the piano, I get the same sound as the grand piano. I wanna get that sound while playing, how can I do this? This is a big problem for me, thank you in advance.
