    As a body guy myself, painting is 90% prep and 10% actual painting... All the over spray and masking is totally preventable. Proper masking doesn't take any more time to do it right than having the vehicle come back for a repaint because of an unhappy customer. But going to Maaco instead of an actual body shop is like going to McDonalds and excepting the food to be home style like the mom and pop café, you get what you pay for.

      yea but a 3500$ CVPI is the poster child for a Maaco special , its not a vintage Mustang.

    For Maaco jobs, you really get what you pay for. On a personal note, I spent a month meticulously sanding and prepping my car and painted it myself. In the end, I spent roughly 1000 dollars between paint, guns, a paint booth, chemicals, sandpaper, masking and bags, and essentially only got a "Maaco quality" paint job. It is difficult for a business that offers cheap paint jobs to be meticulous with your car and to prep each and every part of your car. With so many seams edges and trim pieces, it's difficult to mask every corner and work tape into all of the cracks. Take it from me, I spent much much longer than maaco would spend prepping my car, and still ran into a fair bit of problems. I am surprised at the overall quality of Maaco paint jobs given the price honestly.

      They didnt even take the time to take my license plate off or cover up my exhaust tip lol. Some very simple things could have been prevented.

    For the rims you need to get 06+ 17's those look so much nicer,My last 2 2003's i did the rim swap and was very happy with the look.

    I just picked up a 2001, merc grand marquis precision Trac (that's the welfare edition), original paint, but fading at hood, and fenders. thought about getting it painted cheap, but changed my mind. because i had I had bad experience before, almost no clear coat, paint over trim.
    I'm probably going to compound, wax and take it from there

    I understand that you got the same factory color but next time you should ask what type of clear brand they will use on your car. I get the feeling that it's something cheap like omni which costs $70-90 dollars a gallon depending on where you get it and this is ok if you are planning on selling your car and you just want to make it look good but if you gonna keep it for some years it usually lasts a couple of years on an average so my suggestion is to be on a safe side keep on waxing it often to preserve your paint job for as long as possible cause a good quality clear it's like several hundred dollars a gallon plus hardner etc. and a place like macco their goal is to spend as little as possible on the materials so if you think about it just the cost of a good quality materials can cost $500+ dollars to paint a car especially this size look if they don't even do a good job masking a car you think they will use good quality materials on it? To paint a car at macco it is good to know someone who works there that you know and trust that will do a good job otherwise it's like getting served at McDonald's you know what the experience is like most of the time. There's no difference between one and the other they both ask what would you like you tell them this or that after you pay and check what is in your bag and what you hoped to get is two different things and a good quality auto body place is like a fancy restaurant lets say you get what you pay for. Good luck 👍

    Thank you for this review. My Crown vic has the peelformance white that needs to be redone. I was thinking of taking it to Maaco but after this I am going to a body shop with the hops of getting a really good paint job done.

    you can use acetone, or fingernail polish remover same thing
    but use a
    folded paper towell for a crisp edge
    a tiny bit at a time
    but be extreamly careful not to touch your paint job, and keep the remover far away from your car,
    if it splashes onto your car, it will littrrally eat your paint, and if you try to wipe it,
    that will only make it worse,
    do not try to take paint off of paint,
    that does not work
    take your time, no hurry ànd as soon as the paper is saturated with paint, get it away from your car and start
    with a fresh paper towell
    use a whole roll if you have to, they cost nothing
    go very slowly and carefully,
    I used to paint, body work, and detail my own
    Muscle-cars
    more than 30 years ago, also you can take paint off the rubber, and chrome, first it will be vert sticky, then it will begin to wipe off,
    don't worry all the black is just oxidation, of the rubber no harm done,
    but it stains, so don't spread it your paint especialy white
    good luck
    best wishes

    I think it depends on where you go and the level of skill in the people who do the work. I reviewed yelp in my area and one macco place was ranked at a one because of things like in this video. However I went to another macco one town over and my 3k paint job on my Vic was outstanding. They even called me during the process to discuss how it was going. Also from the beginning they told me not to take my car back unless I was full satisfied in the job done. I found one area that wasn't perfect near my trunk and the manager saw it and was really upset. He fixed it and then painted the inside of my trunk and under the hood for free because of this. Just depends on where you go. That job they did on your car is totally unacceptable.

    It's a typical Maaco job, but that's about appropriate for an old cop car. You can get most of the over-spray off yourself. Get some decent rims for it, cutouts for the exhaust and run the shit out of it.

    Going to Maaco seems to be like opening a box of chocolates... I recently dropped my 07 CVPI in awesome quality Ford peelformace white at a local Maaco and your video scares me because it reinforces the stereotypes about Maaco. I did get a chance to look at some of their other work and it was decent so I'm just gonna keep my fingers crossed for now. I know all their shops are independently owned and operated. I did not need any body work and the total was $1150. Should be ready within a week. I wish I had taken off all the lights and grille now though.

      The first time I went there I had a pretty decent experience, but this last time was so bad I will never go again. I also went to a different one the second time as well, so maybe it was just the MAACO I went to. Good luck with it

    it just shows how much time (which = $$) it takes to do a proper masking up.
    my only advice is next time,get some 2" masking tape and do all the rubbers and light yourself.
    as for the aerial bungs,you should have popped them out,mask under the hole in the trunk and source new white ones.

    When I get my crown vic repainted I'm going to take off all the lights and rear reflector panel. Any thing I don't want the potential for paint to get on its cumming off. And I will flat bed it to the paint shop. And I will do a lot of masking myself.

  • @christophermorris2635
    @christophermorris2635 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why didnt you remove the lights, trim, grille, rear facia panel, etc...that wouldve made the difference and even save you money ...the taillight alone is held in place by 3 nuts...thanks for the review but doing your own prep work/removal is an absolute must!!

    @Nikluse 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you're going to get a paint job at maaco take the headlights, grille, corner lights, also the rear lights and trim off, trust me I had the same exact shit work done on my old crown Vic, even overspray the engine and it really bothered me because I could have taken those things off but I didn't know they were that lazy with their prep work.

    • @silverridgeramblin3066
      @silverridgeramblin3066  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Originally I was just getting the one side painted but since my car had been painted before I got it in some special Pearlescent 3 stage paint it was cheaper doing the whole thing back to factory white, so I never really considered taking everything off. The first time I went there it was actually decent. This time holy shit.

    I painted my Vic with Tremclad spray cans, and honestly, I did a way better job at masking than they did. It helps if it's your car, I just don't trust many people working on my car.
    You might be able to take some of that over spray off with a rag dipped in acetone or paint thinner.

    Bring it back and have them fix the quarter panel and if you want the paint to last long as possible then claybar and wax it through the summer and wash it often in the winter so salt doesn't build up and eat away the clear coat

    That is one of the crappiest paint jobs I've ever seen. At least they painted it. I have a 2006 Crown Vic P71, and the original white paint was flaking off. Apparently that was a factory defect with the white paint. Maaco told me it would cost over $4000 to repaint it because they would have to remove ALL the old paint, because if they painted over it, it would still peel off. I did some research on it, and apparently they were telling me the truth, Ford did mess up on the paint. So now I'm looking at selling the car. I saw some things on your car I would have done differently. I would have removed the rear door side trim, so it matched the front doors. I would have also removed all the rubber plugs from the antenna holes, and replaced them with new ones after it was painted. The plastic rocker panel covers are a soft textured finish, with the color molded in. It was not designed to be painted, and the black paint they put on it will peel off. You can clean the paint off the exhaust, and touch up under the fenders when you get the wheels off. If I were going to take a car in to be painted, I would remove everything that was removable, and I would carefully go over the car with a notepad and make notes about such things as no paint under the fenders, no paint on the exhaust, no paint on plastic rocker panels, no paint on tires, and anything specific to the car, and I would give them the list, and go over it with them. If they tried to blow me off, I'd go somewhere else. I'd rather go to a more reputable paint shop and pay more for a decent job than end up with a mess like that. I did have Maaco paint my old '79 Chevy pickup, it came out about the same as your car, but it still looked 100 times better than it did to begin with. The blue paint had almost completely burned off.

    MAACO Sucks at painting cars!Back in 1989 I had a 73 Dodge pickup painted at MAACO in Tempe, AZ and when I got it back, they didnt even spray the rockers. They stopped at the top of them, and they didn't even take out the taillights. I had the rest of the truck stripped and all that was left was the glass and taillights. Within a month, the paint around the vent window flaked off down to the primer. Don't use MAACO

      Thanks man appreciate it. It wasnt painted too bad it just the fact that they did some things that were so beyond stupid that anything that was decent doesnt even matter.

      Wraps only last like 5 years. 1700 for 10 years or 2000 for 5 lol. Wraps are more for protecting paint anyways.

      The annoying noise through the whole video? Why, that would be the whining sissy half-a-man narrating what a fucked-up paint job he got from Maaco. Man-up and handle your business, bro. Go back to Maaco and demand they fix that atrocity. If not, it looks like you're gonna have to do a TON more chores around your parents' house to earn enough dough to get that shit fixed properly. And yes, hugeCRSfan69... VERY IRRITATING indeed.

    It's getting so good at 15:24. I am so sorry but I laughed so hard at the narration. You sound just like me man. A fucking cup. I have to disagree with every single persons post on this video bashing MAACO when they are supposed to be the top dog #1 automotive body restoration shop in the country. Do your damn job right! You charged the man $1,400! At that point it is not his fault because "Oh, you went to MAACO." My local shop in Lake Norman quoted me $350 for a once over with the necessary Bondo and sanding work done. Not bad but I will NOT get that done. This is a perfect example of very poor craftsmanship from MAACO. This is where I will be going and this will be the video that I show them that I do NOT want done to my car. Thank you SilverRidgeRamblin for your accurate video. Hopefully your pain helps others like me. You paid almost top dollar for body restoration and that is what you deserve. Take that bullshit right back to the shop man and ream them a new asshole. I'll show my local shop this video before they work on my shit. That's for sure. You don't deserve this for $1,400. That's ridiculous. Good work my man. Very helpful. I hope you get your proper bodywork done by these fuckheads. See ya.

      i agree 100% with you adam, these morons on here are bashing maaco and bashing this poor guy for complaining. they are getting paid to do a job, they better do it right! theyre lazy. if maaco was so bad they wouldnt have like 1000 shops nationwide, they are capable of doing perfect paint jobs ive seen them. the particular group that worked on this guy's car really screwed up though.
