My Lincoln dealership does this for their customers. They use either arnott or strutmaster coil springs and new shocks. I used a local family auto shop.
Completed this 2 days ago and really like the conversion. No regrets. Ride is about the same as air springs. Have a 2003 Lincoln Town Car. Saved a lot of money. $ 450 was the total cost. If you need air springs because you tow a boat then the air springs may be needed.

so 160 for brand new air springs is more than 450 for stupid coil springs... gotcha..

I don't know why some would like to convert the suspension. The air springs do provide a superior ride over conventional coil springs. The rear air springs on my 2011 Lincoln Navigator recently failed and needed replacement after 10 years of operation.
The vehicle remains operable with failed air springs, so I ordered new aftermarket air bags from ebay of $80 for the pair, which arrived in 10 days. Quality seems to be equivalent to the OEM products. I followed a TH-cam instruction video to replace them. About 3 hours of not very difficult work in the driveway to install them and the original factory ride is restored.

My right side air spring keeps popping. I replaced twice in 1 week and the third one lasted 1 day. Don’t know why it keeps popping? 03 mercury marauder 125k miles

    • @chrisgraham2904
      @chrisgraham2904 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TEMPERWATTS That is strange. Something must be hitting and puncturing the air bag. Can you determine where on the bag that leak occurs? If you obtained all three from the same source and stock, they could have a defect. Has your supplier warrantied the air bags?

In Canada, the air pump, lines and plugs on top of the air spring itself erodes very fast and becomes an ever increasing issue over time from road salt and whatnot.
This is why some people would want to convert. If I bought new vehicles, probably wouldn't be an issue.
But I like to own my vehicles even if that comes at the cost of buying used vehicles. Used vehicles with air systems are usually on the verge of death or already are. Lol.
      Just my 2 cents 😎🤙🏻

    *attention*
I have done the replacement with the moog coil/shock pack. DONT wast your time with needless continuous replacement of air components. IF THE AIR FAILS THE SUSPENSION FAILS. Socks/struts will never fail.

Will this springs from a spring conversion be able to replace factory coil springs on a grand marquis that did not come with air? I con only seem to find air or coil conversion kits and I wasn’t sure if the spring seats were the same for factory air and factory coil

Go to u pull junk yard. Buy springs from a crown vic. Did it in 1.5 hours and cost me 17 dollars. Rides great and won't fail. You do have to ignore the dash light.

the reason to do this, is that the pumps need replaced frequently and so do the air springs. This sort of air suspension system does not seem to hold up well in wet cold climates, where slush and salt erode them. The air springs are about a hundred dollars each, and the pump can run 300 dollars and upward, If you replace with the conversion kit a little over200 dollars including the shocks, you won't have to pay for pumps anymore. BUT!!!! it is not as easy as this video makes it look, the conversion kit comes with new shocks, so plan to replace those also, (also plan that the old shocks are rusted in solid and you may have to cut the bolts, buy new bolts and save yourself a trip) and the coil spring is almost twice as tall as the air spring. you will not be able to muscle it in the space with out some sort of spring compression device. something like this one, www.lowes.com/pd/K-Tool-International-Automotive-Strut-Spring-Compressor/50376246?cm_mmc=SCE_PLA_ONLY-_-ToolsAndHardware-_-SosAtg-PowerTools-_-50376246:K_Tool_International&CAWELAID=&kpid=50376246&CAGPSPN=pla&k_clickID=8a2d0425-06e6-4080-95a2-960f153881ef&gclid=Cj0KCQjwnqzWBRC_ARIsABSMVTOUrKcvmxUvzLtb8undMadqXGb3dBndSg2enO-fHajuZQRoNL9gTwYaAkUfEALw_wcB Otherwise this video is very helpful. oh yes, also we needed to utilize two jacks, at some points, we used the second jack to keep the spring compressed in its place while we put the shocks back on. putting the jack under the wheel mount. Otherwise the spring will press a the shock downward, pass the point where it mounts on it's bottom bolt. Good luck, doable, pain as all car repairs are. by the way we also like that the rear end sits higher, we were dragging the but on this car on curbs since the day we bought it, but no more.

There's no need to do this job. Replacing the factory suspension parts is so easy; I replaced one of the airbags with a flathead screwdriver and it can be done in about an hour the first time. Once you know what you're doing it could be done in 20 minutes without instructions.

People who say replacing the bags is cheaper than this conversion are delusional. Sure you can get cheap air springs but they won't last you two years, and that's if your lucky. You replace them twice with cheap bags you've spent twice what the conversion kit costs. Or you can buy actual OEM air springs that will last and spend $350+ each. And you still have to worry about the compressor as well. Did you catch the leak right away? Did you drive it for awhile before you replaced the air spring? These compressor aren't made to run constantly the way they have to when there is a leak. Those things are $500+ for OEM. So in the long run you're looking at $1200 dollars for OEM replacements. You can get a Monroe air ditcher kit for $150 bucks and forever be done with it.

To do the air spring job right, you're changing the springs, dryer, and compressor and all the o-rings. The job, done right, will take about 3-4 hours if you're starting with a dirty car that hasn't had any of that maintenance in 100K miles. They all wear out at about the same time. Total cost; about $500-600 without labor. Quality parts will last over 100K miles; sometimes as much as 200K. You can buy lifetime replacement warrantied high quality air springs from arnott for way less than you are quoting above. The ride quality of air springs is superior. The ability to adjust to load is superior. The maintenance is worse than a coil spring; which never fails. Your choice. Coil springs are cheap, and labor is less. Quality of ride is less. Ride height doesn't adjust. You'll probably never have to touch it again as long as you're happy with the result. Better? maybe.

Everyone that see's mine is jealous of my coil springs. I didn't own the vehicle with the air suspension in it. It rides great and drives as straight as it can after my first alignment since I got it. I know air suspension was a nightmare in my 88 98 Oldsmobile Regency. What's funny is seeing all the vehicles around here that are all busted down to the ground as mine sits high and proud.
