Let us know which club works best for your game! Important to remember (as always with these tests) that this wasn't meant to be a definite representation of which club will perform better for an individual. With the data in the video we've shown the differences in ball flight between the two clubs, which will apply at any ball speed. Whether it works for you...you'll have to go out and get fit to find out! 😉

This video came at the perfect time for me and is really quite interesting. I want a club for going into Par 5s in two and I've never been truly comfortable with the hybrids I've owned. For some reason I never considered a 5 wood, but perhaps I should. My UT is my non-driver club off the tee, so a high flying 5 wood might just be what I'm looking for. Thanks, fellas!

I have been using a Cobra 3-4 hybrid at 19 degrees for over a year now and love it both from the tee and in the fairway (to be honest mostly from the rough)

my 2 and 4 iron for sure (of the longer clubs). I don't now why but my misses with irons are usually just short, my woods and hybrids are all over the place. But I think this is just because when I first started playing golf I asked for the 2 hardest clubs to hit, got a 60 degree and a 4 iron, my buddy claimed "when you can hit these, then you can play golf" so I practiced with them until I could hit them OK.
Have to say that it has served me good, my handicap was down to 17 at the end of that same summer :)

  • @sonicpebble

I made the switch from a 5wood to hybrid years ago and never looked back. It had nothing to do with distance/feel as I hit my 5wood extremely well (and loved it). It had to do with those crappy "in the sh*t" lies off the fairway, in a divot, or a bunker 200+ away from the green. I simply would want to hit down harder on the ball for those kind of lies while still getting my consistent distance, the hybrid allowed me to confidently do so knowing I would not break my 5wood shaft (which had happened a few times). The hybrid also allowed me to do a simple chip and run or even putt from off the green in certain odd situations. Off the tee or fairway a 5wood is fantastic, but for me there is just more utility all-round with a hybrid.

I have a 22 ° 7wood and a 22° hybrid (slow swinging lady here) and as you find in the video as well, they both go about the same distance, the wood with a bit more height. The reason I prefer to put the hybrid in the bag usually is that I am way more confident with it out of light rough or even a fairway bunker. I just can't get myself to hit a wood anywhere but on the fairway (or off the tee, of course). Also I find it easier with the hybrid to just hit a shorter lower punch shot out from out under trees and the like.

    • @bitmastermac
      @bitmastermac 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

MissyLaMotte I’m hoping that works for me. I go from a 3 wood lofted as a 4, to a Heavenwood 7 lofted 20-22. The 3 goes straight and long off the deck, but I’m struggling with the 7. I just moved to senior Recoil shafts in all but the 7, so that might be my trouble, but I just bought a 3 hybrid based on my success with 4 and 5 hybrids. I also just ordered a senior Recoil shaft that I’ll cut to 7 wood length for a final comparison.
I haven’t played in 18 years and my swing speed slowed. I went from firm to regular, then realized I needed a lighter flex in the middle of my purchase spree. Only cost me 3 shafts, so I’m not super bummed. Fitters always scared me, or at least the rolling eyes I expect to get. These guys seem like the ones I’d trust with my fragile golf confidence. I’m 65 and fit, with a 20 handicap these days.

Hybrids all the way for me. Being barely 5' 5'', I just feel so much more confident with hybrids. In fact, I have a 2,3 and 4 hybrid in my bag and I use them in all kinds of situations: from the fairway, as a driver, for approach shots, around the green. And I experiment a lot with them when ther's nobody around...

    Last fall I got 917 D2, 15* & 18* F2; Vokey SM6 - 46, 50, 54 V, 58-06 K.
    A month ago, looking to replace 4-9 Irons, I ordered 5-9 718 AP2, AND chose a 21* F2 to replace the 4 Iron.

Thanks again for this tiny video. Great stuff. To be honest I switched to hybrids quite a long time ago and forgot my 5 wood completely. After this video I surely will take the 5 wood again into consideration during my fitting process.

Another great video it’s funny I feel way more confident with my hybrid than any 5 wood I have tested and I feel I can manipulate the flight better with a hybrid. It’s so interesting to see how 2 clubs with the same loft can go the same distance via different routes. It again hammers home the importance of going to a place like TXG to a all through your game to help discern what might be the best club for your game. I really want to see Matt hit a 1 iron for fun lol.

  • @paulhudson2293
    @paulhudson2293 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Really interesting differences to see between the two clubs. I remember my Dad in the late 90s has a huge set of woods from Driver, through, 3, 5, 7, 9 and down to 11. I used to have a 27 degree 7 wood when i was a junior and didn't have the club speed to properly launch a 4 iron.
At the top end of my bag now I have a 3 wood, 19 degree hybrid, and a 2 and 3 MP-H4 iron. I mix and match depending on wind conditions and how confident I've been hitting the hybrid and wood. I find they can snap hook way more than the irons, and because I don't struggle with height, if it's windy, I want to keep the ball lower.

I recently got rid of my 3 wood and 3 hybrid and replaced it with a 5 wood.
    Best choice I ever made.
Easier to hit off the fairway, and easier to hit a more solid shot with a higher launch than a 3 wood.
Feels more comfortable than a hybrid when I'm setting up to the ball. The extreme offset in the hybrids always bothered me.

Great demo to show flight character of these two clubs. I game a 4 hybrid and 5 wood for the option of low flight and shot shaping of the 4h and the 5w for better height and a bit more distance. While these two are somewhat redundant in terms of distance, I think having the options in long approach shots worth carrying both.

Revisited this video as I've rebuilt my entire bag (3 wedges, PW-5iron, 22 & 18 Hybrids, 3W, D) and after fighting with my Epic #2 18 degree Hybrid for a while (loved it off the tee but too inconsistent and not enough hight off the fairway for a 230 club), I decided to go with an 18 degree Rogue Subzero 5 wood - and I love it. Every single thing about the club is a better fit for me: ease of consistent shot shape, ease of launch off fairway, & peak height for carries into Par 5s. After making the switch, I adjusted the loft on my 4 hybrid to 21 degrees from 22 for a gapping tweak and as a byproduct have hit it off of tees on short or tight Par 4s for a 220 accurate shot off the tee - something I never did before.

I put in a 7w head at a hybrid shaft length. Feel that I'm getting the forgiveness & sharper descent of a fairway wood and the usability of a hybrid length.

3 years ago and I've watched this plenty of times over the 3 years. The gap between 3 wood and 4 iron has been up for grabs more times than any other club in my bag. Have played 5 wood, 3 hybrid and 2 iron on and off and never seem to settle. Finally settled on an Epic Flash Sub Zero 5 wood with heavy weight forward. Gives me great height but not crazy high spin. Is great because it matches my 3 wood which I love. Always have the 2 iron available for linksy courses or windy days. Reintroduction of a 5 wood as my main gamer has been a game changer

You guys ever try an 11 Wood ? I bought a Callaway Rogue 11 Wood last season. Love it.

Fantastic segment guys. I recently found myself trying to create a solution for some longer 3 pars that I wasn't confidently hitting w/ irons, and started messing around with what I had on hand: a shortened shaft 5W and a lofted up 4H, looking for a solution that could stick the landing. Opposite of Matt, my shorter 5W actually ran on me quite a bit, but the loft-jacked hybrid seems to do the trick, and I think that may be my near future answer to the problem. I'm now on the search to see if I can't find a used 7W to see if it may not be an even better fit.

You forgot a very significant difference in your assessment regarding height

This is the part of my bag i really want to get dialed in. I've had a 5 wood in the past and loved it, currently use a 3 hybrid and it's a little love/hate. I've played around with 3 irons also but there is times where it just lacks a little hight compared to others. Hybrid is a great option to be the middle of the lot and versatility but not sold on it

Great vid thanks guys. I struggle to carry my 3 hybrid further than my 4 hybrid, I think a 5 Wood could help me get the ball up in the air for the extra carry instead of my 3 hybrid.

Really enjoyed this analysis...... 3 years ago I bought a Titleist Driver; 3; 5 wood plus Hybrid, 5 irons down to 9 to add to my existing Taylormade 7 wood (old favourite) plus my Mizuno PW; 52 and 56 wedges. This was all accidental in some ways but I love this combination. I get the same or similar distance with my 5 wood and hybrid I do get that additional height with the 5 wood, which you need at time.. I’m an old guy so don’t get the distances but, I can agree that the results are very similar

I play on a championship links with very tight lies so I have found that the hybrid is really fantastic. It is also great in the semi rough. I wish that I had one years ago.

Excellent video, how would this affect a golfer with a slower swing speed, I have the yips when it comes to hitting fairway woods but hit my hybrid pretty good.

I used to play a 5 wood but most the courses in my area stay a bit wet so it would either plug or not move. So I ended up going with a 2 iron a lot less height so I would get the lower flight and enjoy it

    Great video
What about hitting from the rough. Would you guys recommend hybrid instead of 5 wood because of smaller head and less grass interaction.

In all seriousness though, this is why I carry the old RBZ stage 2 19*. The bigger headed hybrid gives me the best of both worlds in that I can hit it higher/lower and even off the tee occasionally on short par 4’s. I know it’s not the most forgiving model but it was a very affordable option that covers what I need.

I am definitely a 5 wood guy. I will use it both off the tee and into greens. If my life depended on me hitting one club, my 5 wood is what I’m pulling. It’s an older Callaway X Hot.
As for pros, on the LPGA, Michelle Wie carries 3,5,7, and 9 woods.

As someone who just doesn't get along with hybrids, this definitely opened my eyes to bagging a 5w, or maybe even something in the 22* loft area to cover the distance between my 3w and 4i. Currently playing a more forgiving 3i, and while it is great off the tee, the forgiveness isn't as great off of the fairway.

Enjoyed the vid. I've always gone with a 3/5 wd combo althought the 3 lately has been a 16.5 degree wood. Because hybrids are typically easier out of heavier rough, I am going with a slightly larger hybrid for confidence and believe that I will not lose yardage. Even though the shaft difference 42 v 40, is great, I may obtain better contact with the shorter shaft. We will see.

My 5 wood is one of the most useful clubs in my bag; I use it for anything from 260-230, and it is a steel-shafted (X100 @42.5") monster^^ I went to steel since I couldn't find a graphite shaft heavy enough that I liked. As for hybrids, I like them, but since I started carrying a 64* wedge I have to decide between the hybrid and 4 iron...the 4 iron usually wins out. Before the 64 came along, I used to carry two 5 woods (one for tee shots and another smaller one for the fairway), which was no problem since I don't carrying a 3 wood. So, it is nice to see that at least one of my clubs can keep up with Matt ;~)

With all of the options today for hybrids, driving irons, woods, wedges and putters, at last count my bag now has 27 clubs. I need to get a bigger bag soon.
