I built a server that allows me to game anywhere in the world I want! It isn't perfect and definitely has a few prerequisites, but so far I've been able to play any Steam game on devices like my iPhone, Macbook, Mac Studio, and other off-site desktops!

My favorite combo is Sunshine for the host and Moonlight on the client, it works even outside home with a better performance than Steam Link.

Have you run this on an android device? I've been frustrated trying to figure out how to do so with Moonlight. Mouse movement and clicking are a lot less responsive then Parsec, but Parsec drops connections frequently.
@jacelawler1694 I use Moonlight on my Galaxy Tab S7+ at the tablets native res. Mouse input feels a bit off but there's no alternative unless you want to pay $25 to $50 for VirtualHere.
VirtualHere Server turns a device into a server that allows VirtualHere Client devices to use the Server's USB devices over the network. It feels awesome, it's smooth responsive and very low latency.
However the VirtualHere Server is Licensed for only one device and the license can't be transferred to other devices. That's the reason why I haven't bought it.
I still haven't switched to sunshine as geforce experience still works and is a no brainer. Moonlight as a client is the way for sure though.
100% this, but it has limits (limits that will affect Greg) Moonlight on IOS is limited to local network only (this is the case on ipad)

Parsec is the best way. All you need really is about 10 mb connection with very low latency, quality at 10mb isnt great but SO much better then Steam
The Parsec app has almost no delay; I'm surprised they offer such a service for free.

@@GregSalazar Is awesome indeed, I feel like building a pc is always the better option especially if the knowledge is there cause I think i saved hundreds compared to buying a prebuilt cause i think they add quite a bit on for labour, dont think i'll ever buy a prebuilt again, the only thing i struggle with when building pcs is the front panel connectors but i heard some cases actually have the front panel connectors as one connector which sounds cool so that'd prob be a case i would go with for my next build, overall keep up the good work with the videos, very interesting :D

I've been doing this for years. Parsec goes up to 4k 240hz and comes with a virtual monitor driver for headless setups. All I have on my desk is a laptop and the gaming rig is in a rack in the garage.
Do you have a guide if someone else was to do this?
This is one of the best case uses for a home server.
This video came in perfect timing as I am trying to do this but don't feel safe to keep my PC on while I'm outside my house. Anyways wonderful video Greg.

I use my Steam Deck to remote play at my living room PC. Works pretty well for the most part. A dedicated 8bitdo controller does wonders to make it feel like a console experience. Would be interested to see your implementation of a Steam Deck or ROG Ally. I would recommend an OLED Steam Deck if you do look into them due to the Wi-Fi 6e over Wi-Fi 5.

I just sold my PS5 but I do want to occasionally game on a big TV but also don't want to buy or build a completely new gaming rig. Now I can just reuse old hardware or old laptops I have laying around.

Nice one. Maybe network boot with Auto-start Steam might work, too? This way you wouldn't need to let the main system run all the time sucking dust and using power.
Ahh Greg you have totally immersed me into the pc building hobby. Built my own, dismantled mine and rebuilt with new parts and built my friend one with the leftovers and then rebuilt myself a retro PC and now building my grandmother one next week (that she will probably be annoyed with because of how fast everything moves and loads 😂).
I'll give it a try.
Steam remote play is great! I have used it in the past to play games of my pc on the couch using just a Chromecast with Google TV and a controller.

1) the server need high end hardware?
2) is possible playing the games on the TV then? I have 55" LG oled 120hz and i wish use them for gaminfg without a PS5/X-Box.

i dont use team viewr, i use vnc viewer, can have multiple computers setup for it and very convinient , just pullup the viiewer and double click on the computer you want to control and it connects
One cool use for a high end gaming server would be using other devices as thin clients to provide gaming without requiring multiple PCs for multiple people. Craft Computing was experimenting with this recently and seems to be the go-to guy for that sort of subject although his setup uses NVIDIA Tesla cards instead.

I just did something similar once I got gig fiber installed. I use Moonlight on my remote devices which uses Nvidia’s software to stream the games. I’ve tested everything from 1080 144hz to 4k 120hz. Flawless experience

Hi Greg, would you happen to know how to install the ReSizeable Bar, in the BIOS of an Asus Strix X99 Gaming motherboard? I just recently bought an RX7600 XT and wanted to utilize AMD's Smart Access Memory if I can. My motherboard, though old and no issue of sort having 6900K cpu, has an option Above 4G Decoding in its BIOS but no ReSizeable Bar menu. Thank you for the informative yet entertaining videos you create.
Does the nVidia GPU support GPU virtualisation so you can pass it though to all your VMs Greg?

I'll recommend as well, like someone else already did in the comments, Sunshine server and Moonlight client. Works from anywhere as long as the internet connection is good.
I also noticed you didn't enable HEVC video in steam link, which is basically H.265 video compression. It's better than the default H.264. Gives you better image quality on the client at lower bitrate/bandwidth cost.
I toggled this on and off several times and noticed compression issues in playback with 265. Not sure why.

Wonder if you can use parsec instead of team viewer/ quick assist :) edit: you could try using moonlight/ sunshine or parsec to stream instead. Im genuinely interested to see if you have a better experience outside of home with these :)
Greg, that's an impressive setup, especially for a networking newb. After experimenting with many sorts of server software from bare metal to UnRaid, I settled for a standard Windows 11 box opened up to contact by all my other PCs. I don't run it headless because that would add complexity that I don't want; I just go to the server and do what I need to do (rarely anything) using it as a local machine. It meets my active storage, archival storage, and backup needs. But I'm still fascinated by this series.
I appreciate it! And I feel ya on standard Windows. So much simpler and even a bit of upside for a single client. My goal is to set up a second WVM to tie into the same storage pool and compute resources. Waaaay above my pay grade right now, but a long-term goal for sure :-)
@@GregSalazar I might someday "upgrade" my solution, but for now just being able to store files centrally (with NO cloud) and access them from any machine in the house is sufficient.

You won’t be able to play multiple games directly from the server but with your full game library on the server you set all games to update immediately and then on your other gaming PCs in the house you can install the games directly from the server to the gaming pc that you want to play currently and any updates will pull down from the server and the games can be on older ssd drives because you don’t need to play directly from the server which nulls the 4090 and to be honest I don’t think you need the 4090 for a remotely remote play

I used TrusNas Scale and run a windows vm. Took forever to get the rtx 2080 ti to play nice with a windows vm. Was trying to figuire out if I could use my server as a stream rig and ran into issues with the vm not picking up the capture card correctly and obs detecting the video card.

I did this last year but with my PC and a laptop. Thou I used my phone's hotspot. My current SIM plan is unlimited 100MB/s down and up. I played AC 1 and it didn't stutter at all.

wake-on-lan is disabled.
So you are not bouncing off Steams servers if you have IP sharing enabled. The steam servers are just there for the initial bit to give the client the global IP address of your server and then handle the initial port forwarding. That is the point of IP sharing. To allow you to connect without having to use Steam servers to redirect traffic.

Hey Greg I was wondering if you could help my with an issue I'm having I don't know if you usually help people in the comments like this, but while I'm running games my pc randomly doesn't output audio or picture and I have to restart the system. After I restart I have to reinstall the latest drivers again and it will repeatedly happen after about half an hr, however sometimes it does do it around 2 minutes after starting a game up, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
for me moonlight + sunshine has WAY better quality and input lag than steam/parsec. on local network at 1080P it does need about 120mbit of bandwidth but i can't really tell im playing over the network on a different machine

you cant stream some games from a virtual machine because the game knows that the pc is not an actual one, the anticheat doesn't allow this because hardware bans would not be effective anymore. to my knowledge you can stream these games from a normal windows pc.

Where are your rails to properly mount the server in the rack?
I have rails for most of my servers. Aldebaran rests atop my UPS (which sits on its own beefy rail) and doesn't need one.
Xbox controllers are your friend for most of the titles you showed. Native plug and play (or Bluetooth) on most Android devices.
Parsec also works great as a steam streaming alternative, if you have games in other game libraries.
Xbox and PlayStation controllers also have native support on iOS.

I keep it in my server closet with active ventilation. I don't even notice it in the next room or even while walking by it under load.
wow you have a ultra wide dont even know you can hook up two devices i use my ultra as dual monitors i play my ps5and consoles on one the other is for my streaming rig it amazing me how ya ultra wide owners dont know of the kvm switch build on those bad boys or picture in pcture mode or picture by picture mode does your monitor uses two divices in one monitor ?

You likely missed our older videos where we outfitted the server rack with tons of Ubiquiti hardware (mentioned that in this video as well), including a UDM-SE.
As a truck driver I play my games over my phones connection....not hotspot but my actual phones connection....on my laptop anywhere in the US and dont have an issue. Works for me 90 percent of the time. Unless you just have horrible service in the area.

Useless trivia time: Did you know that Nvidia used to make motherboard chipsets? I have a Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 with an nForce 4 chipset.
Setup up a VPN into the environment, RDP to the actual server. Best way to keep it safe. This is the setup we would do for clients who wanted their server to be 'safe".
The problem with RDP is the response time is not fast enough for gaming. Using a VPN into the environment will also affect the latency experienced while gaming. Wireguard is faster but still not as fast as opening ports on the firewall. But you mentioned secure, a self hosted VPN will always be the most secure because you are opening the least number of ports on your local network, you are correct there.

When we designed this house, we elected for carpet in only one place... my office. MUCH better for sound and eliminates the need for annoying and expensive rugs (which are essentially carpets anyway). It's a non-issue.

I didn't have much of an issue at all with performance _or_ latency outside of cell service gaming.
Seems like I’d rather have the extra 2tb than raid for games that can easily be redownloaded.
I understand the argument - I just don't have a need for 4TB worth of games.
Anyone here using a remote power button? I'm using one to turn on my pc and Parsec to play remotely. Seems good to me.
I feel like there was a core misunderstanding with how this works. You are not using "Steam Servers" if you are not performing a direct connection. All that means is rather than talking directly between the two machines with no hops in between, you are routing the streamed game over the Internet.

You keep it in a house in an open cabinet, surely you're not surprised its dirty , every server cabinet I have ever built, is fully enclosed with plenty of exhaust fans and all four covers on cabinet and locked in a clean room?
It's dirtier in 3 months than any of my other systems that I never turn off, so yes, I was a bit surprised. Even fully enclosed units become very dirty.

I don't understand RAID for games.
I get it. Most folks would prefer the 4TB since there's nothing too sensitive stored that can't be backed up via Steam cloud, etc. I just don't have a real use for a full 4TB. Would rather have the backup just to save time. I don't often play more than a few games ever at a time.
