I've been on some experiment where theyve been adding annotations to TH-cam comments. It's incredibly stupid because they choose the most random arbitrary phrases.
Its a shame Valve is throwing away everything good about the Index for the most generic headset possible. Also, I know they want it to have a consistent layout across their devices, but not having the right touchpad on the Steam Duke be in a spot that is usable for most hands is such garbage.
@@MadMaxGyver Because the main reason, at least for me, for getting Index instead of some other system was the knuckle controllers instead of pushing a trigger button to close the hand. I am thinking of getting Quest 3 for the living room so it's not a completely useless development but unless Valve can match the price of Quest 3 I don't see a reason why I would go with their version, unless there's some really good upsided.
1:14 The base stations don't track anything, they emit laser signals that the headset tracks. Valve's system IS inside-out tracking, the sensors and processing that does the tracking is built into the headset and the controllers, but with specific reference points in the form of the Lighthouses, instead of generic video tracking.
@MadMaxGyver Yes, but it's also just plain wrong, both inside-out and outside-in are umbrella terms that can cover a range of tracking methods. There's granularity there that should be acknowledged, and/or different terms used, something like "fully onboard tracking" or a more sexy sounding term. I don't mind that much when random people do it, but I expect a higher standard from news outlets and people specialized in the field. Similarly I have issues with news outlets and "authorities" using terms like "two times more" when they really mean "twice as many", or gun educators calling the AR-15 system "direct impingement" when it's an internal piston, DI is a different system.
Riley, you should have gotten the narrator from the Stanley Parable Trailers to say Quickbits a thousand times at the end... Stanley, Stanley, Stanley, Stanley, Stanley, Stanley, Stanley, Stanley.....
I have watched a lot of LMG, and to me This channel is new, but now I see it is 6 years old. Soooo now I am amazed at how time operates. FUUUUUCKKKK!!!!
The leaked wide Steam controller would probably be pretty nice, I personally find wide controllers (such as the Wii U Gamepad) to be quite comfortable due to not having bend my arms inwards as much to hold the controller (don’t take that out of context).
I'm not buying another VR headset until we get index-like finger tracking again. Valve and Meta can stick it if they think I'm gonna buy a headset without it. Bonus points if it has camera tracking so it can do foviated rendering and focus pulling without breaking the bank.
3:44 anyone else see that guy running on the far right? He slows up, and suddenly his whole body is reversed coming toward the perspective of the viewer. His arms are the giveaway
Congrats to Riley, of all the suspect choices Linus makes, hiring him and letting do his own thing with the team here has to be one of the most successful business decisions he’s made. An amazing show and style. Never boring and always helpful
Nice change of pace to see linux the man himself deliver the tech news and quickbits! This is like the only Linus channels I watch, so it's nice to see the man who created it all be here 😊
If they release anything even close to what those rendered controllers show, there's going to be a lot of upset VR enthusiasts. Those are clearly not finger tracked. Also, inside-out tracking is far inferior to lighthouse tracking. Valve is obviously prioritizing stand-alone with this headset rather than the "why not both" that people were speculating. Hey Valve! The people who are buying YOUR headsets don't want stand-alone! They want something they can connect to the gaming PCs that they already have! This is going to be a huge step back for the actual VR enthusiasts if you continue down this path.
It's best to wait and see the final product, but I will admit I would be a bit let down if Valve's only new headset entry for a while is just a better Quest 3. Don't get me wrong, I am sure it would be a great Quest competitor, but not having a new enthusiast-level headset after the wait would be a disappointment.
Linus seriously, by your logic, nothing is anything-proof. Put enough energy behind any matter and it will pass through other matter. What are the reasonable expectations of something that claims to be waterproof? In what context is the item being used? I don't think anyone is expecting their Vessi's to stop a hydraulic drill, or even to keep their feet dry while scuba diving. They're waterproof in the context of wearing them while it's raining or while walking through a shallow puddle. That's what they advertise them for, right? Anyway, I love your videos, and WAN show always keeps me company during my commute! Keep being awesome!
Everyone loves to hate on meta, and in many cases rightfully so but the Deckard will use inside out tracking and that controller looks a lot like the quest pro controller....
If valve, a major phone manufacturer, and Qualcomm worked on making linux gaming more viable on ARM, it'd absolutely explode the market. I hope something happens with ARM investment and support by 2026 because the hardware seems to be up to it.
The amount of buttons and even a D Pad on the Valve controllers is very concerning as it demonstrates their head is in the flatscreeen gaming world still where having lots of buttons makes sense, but in VR, the best games are the ones where you interact with things versus pressing buttons. I have never wanted more buttons, just more interactions.
Inside out tracking and no trackpads? No thanks. I'll stick to my index I dont mind a headset having inside out tracking, definitely broadens the viable userbase. But i want my lighthouses aswell. As for the trackpads, they feel far more immersive than button's for some things, and have insane utility for button mapping by developers, you can use a track pad so many ways, and even multiple ways at once

pretty cool that Riley is letting the little guy have some air time.
the index controllers are really good. These look like a step down
