Thanks, I tried to fix this for 10 mins. My phone had 21% whilst I tried to plug it in, it didn't work, it had 19% whilst I tried, it had 18% when the problem solved. Now it's at 24%. Thanks Scott Schiller you are the best at fixing tech.
I made this video about 90 seconds with the hopes people can get the info quickly. Unfortunately, the vinegar approach does take some time to work. Best of luck! 😅
I think for this to be really effective, you need enough liquid to have a drop or two that can stay on the connector long enough to have an effect - like as shown in my video, here.
Thanks man! I was panicking why my iphone charger wasn’t working and it continued until my phone died! When I borrowed my mom’s phone, I watched this video and did everything he said and it worked!
Thanks for this video, because my wife and I were having some problems with charging iPhones. Using several different cords, sometimes not charging at all or sometimes actually losing charge. After a simple Q-tip with white vinegar, simply a few swipes and dry off. The cords are all working. I actually got a jeweler’s magnifying glass, and could see some minor corrosion on the tiny bars. ( can’t see with naked eye) This saved me money, cause I was ready to order new iPhone cords. Great advice.
Another update Feb 2024, still doing the cleaning, the vinegar wasn’t working as well. Still had one contact with dark oxidation on it. I tried a q tip with a drop of Brasso polish. It really seemed to help and didn’t damage the contact. Definitely took off the black oxidation and charges working fine.

Had to come back and check if they even sold me an original charger for that damn price. Nevertheless, took me extremely long but Verified it after a lot of hassle
I didn’t have any alcohol nor vinegar so I used my toothbrush & toothpaste. Voila! Save me from buying yet another cable. Wonder how many corroded cables ended up in land-fill when all they needed was cleaning.
Smart! I hope you gave your toothbrush a good rinse afterward, just to be on the safe side. 😅 I imagine toothpaste may work as a mild abrasive for this sort of stuff, too. You may be able to substitute this for baking soda, since I believe it is in many types of toothpaste.
I suggest trying a different charger, see if that makes any difference. If not the power supply, then see if your phone’s port is clogged or dirty. A toothpick or a plastic dental floss pick can work quite well there. For USB-C, I would not recommend vinegar just yet; they are much more complex in terms of their layout and have a lot of smaller connections.
That sounds like a good idea for a longer-term solution. So far, I haven’t had any issues with the ones I’ve fixed - but it is likely they will oxidize.

I only soaked it in vinegar should I clean it with alcohol 1st then soak in vinegar or can I just soak in vinegar? Because I already tried soaking 10 iPhone cords in vinegar only and they still don’t work. Also can I use 70% rubbing alcohol, I don’t have 90%? I can see on all 10 iPhone cords that the 5th pin looks corroded on all 10 cords, should I try cleaning the 5th pin with another tool to get the corrosion off of it? Can you recommend something else I can use to fix the 5th pin, since u said in the video not to scrape it with a sharp tool, what else can I do to fix the 5th pins? It’s so annoying I have a million iPhone cords and non of them work. I’m going broke buying iPhone cords! Please help!
Worth trying: test a known good working power supply, and a lightning device that can take a charge. This will help to isolate the cable as the faulty part.
If you don’t have vinegar, you can try using a bit of lemon juice and a bit of salt dissolved together. Alternately, a Q-tip and a drop or two of isopropyl alcohol, sometimes also called “rubbing alcohol” might work. The lemon juice and salt is acidic like vinegar, and may work better to clean the copper.
I would guess Apple vinegar would work, but it may take more time if not as concentrated as typical 5% vinegar. I would recommend rinsing the connector afterward as well, in case it leaves any apple-type residue. I’m glad you enjoyed the narration, as well. 😆
If your phone doesn’t start charging when plugging in a cable, it may be the cable is dirty, the cable power source is bad, or your phone’s connector is dirty. If a different cable works, chances are the first cable is bad.
