I gotta give it to ya Sam, you never fail to impress.
When I saw the thumbnail with the Mallard and the G2A, I lost it.
The G2A was my most favorite to look at with the LNER B12 in second, the J94 in third, and the list goes on.
The unique engines are the most interesting to me and I loved it along with the attempted recreations you did.
Brings back a lot of nostalgia, good show Sam.

Hi Sam, autocoaches were used as follows-
    autocoach - engine
    autocoach - engine - autocoach
autocoach - non corridor coach - engine
autocoach - non corridor coach - engine - autocoach
If more coaches were needed a second engine had to be added to the end furthest away from the other engine, and that second engine was used to drag the whole train in the opposite direction to the autotrain and was not connected to the autotrain controls. 2 engines, 2 drivers, 2 firemen and 1 guard to transport a few passengers a couple of stops, bonkers and losing money every trip.
On GWR they were used to reduce the turn round time at terminus stations as no engine run round was required.
I watched 3 videos about this earlier today and made notes, I'm not a nerd, I am a precise enthusiast, honest.
    Great video

Hi Sam. The second sequence was shot between Redditch & Evesham at Broom Junction & Salford priors. BR closed the section between the tunnel at Redditch & Evesham on 6th July 1964. The tunnel at Redditch and the fact that they had negligently run the track bed down contributed to their ability to justify this despite the fact that a New Town was planned between Redditch & Studley.

  • @zachehlers6695

    Hi Sam,
A few notes regarding Autocoaches. First, the throttle linkages which connected the coaches and engines were handed, To connect to the engine and operate correctly, the coaches always had to be coupled to the engine with the driving cab on the coach always facing away. The linkage could not be made up with the cab facing the engine. It did not matter which end of the engine the coach was coupled to.
Also to identify the odd looking Autocoach in the Roundabout film, that was a standard GWR non-corridor Brake 3rd converted to an Autocoach by GWR or BR (depending on the specific diagram). More often then not these were used in Wales.
    Thanks,
    Zach

Here are the trains for 1960:
1 (Axminster Lyme Regis): LSWR 415 class №. 30583 (the preserved №. 488) pulls a single coach. In the background, a rebuilt Merchant Navy pulls the Atlantic Coast Express, and a West Country pulls another express train.
2 (Tavistock): Several LSWR T9s pull passenger trains. Another Bulleid Pacific pulls the Atlantic Coast Express.
3 (Barmouth): Two GWR 3200 class locomotives, or "Dukedogs," double head a train in Wales. They pass the Talyllyn Railway, where №. 4 Edward Thomas pulls a passenger train, before two class 4 4-6-0's take over. Both Dukedogs go "light" back to Barmouth.
4 (Perth): Pat and John went to Perth to film two Caledonian Railway Class 72 locomotives (also called the "Caley Bogies" or the "Dunalastair V"), the last 4-4-0 locomotives built for that railway. Good luck finding a model of the class 72 :p. Other locomotives that appear include several Black Fives; an LNER Class V2 (not 60800 Green Arrow); Thompson B1 61244; an NBR class S (LNER J37); a Midland 4F; a Caledonian class 439; an Ivatt Class 4 Mogul; and an LNER K4.
5 (to Aviemore): The Class 72's pull a double header to Aviemore on the ex-Highland line. A mail coach is at the front of the train.
6 (Spey River Line): GNSR Class F Gordon Highlander pulls two coaches.
    7 (Newcastle): at the ex-NER locale a parade of LNER locomotives can be seen, including several J72's; a J21; a Thompson A2/2; an A3; a J39; and a J27.
8 (York): More LNER locos along with several designs in the National Railway Museum. Among them, there is an A4 (but not 60022 Mallard); a Peppercorn A1; another J72; a Standard 9F (probably not 92220); and the ubiquitous Thompson K1.
9 (Cromford and High Peak Railway): a former LNWR line with J94s picking up loaded wagons of limestone while "empties" make their way up. An LMS Kitson 0F and an NLR Class 75 can also be seen.

I have the DVD with the episodes of railway roundabout on it. Its a great watch especially the part when they show trains going up the steep hill at Bromsgrove in Worcestershire with a banking engine.
I have another DVD on steam locomotives that show Bewdley station on the Severn Valley Railway in the early 1960's before they decided to close the line. Its amazing to see how much hasn't changed at the station and the Bewdley town itself.

2:25 due to slack in the throttle coupling, the lead coach could only be the 2nd vehicle from the engine. Hence sandwich arrangements with 3 or more coaches. Chris Eden-Green went into a lot of detail on this.

    That one was quite nice!
I’m pretty sure the pannier tank was hauling a different train. The colours of the coaches differ.
Engines were overhauled about every 3 months or so just to check aal the bearings and the boiler and such. I’m pretty sure there’s a film called “general repair” which takes you through the process.
That “industrious plant” was probably a coaling station, where locomotives would get coaled up in the morning.

The issue with old footage like railway roundabout is it rarely shows the whole train, particularly with freight trains. This if this wasn't the case it would be even more useful to modellers as a primary source. 8:45 is a good exception.

The Fort William recreation looks great 👌 the locomotive is a 'K2', derived from Gresleys K1 with a larger boiler. Peppercorn K1s were used on this route later so it makes a good substitute!

One thing Sam....those old Lima BR MK1's with LMS on the side aren't really accurate for any period...Also you need to get some ex Stanier coaches...both Bachmann and Hornby produce excellent versions. Their MK1's are also fantastic!

There’s 1990s rereleases of the railway roundabout by the national railway museum. They did programs of express passenger locomotives of both the big fours, and the British Railways, and one solely on the British Railways locomotives. Don’t know how long they’ll be up before the copyright claims take them down. Gotta take advantage of it as long as possible.

In short : I do not like it, I LOVE it ! Reconstructing scenes from the past with today's model trains, that's really what I like. Especially by you.
One idea : recreating barry's scrapyard with the Heljan Tango and the 1361...

You may not have been very accurate in recreating Railway Roundabout steam trains from 1959, but I liked it. Just be careful that wind turbine doesn't interfere with turntable movements, or James the Red Engine could get spun round like a top. Like he did in the Thomas & Friends story Tenders & Turntables, that is. I was trying not to utter two certain words, but I can't hold back any longer. Curse you, Sam! Thanks to you and your Resolven Grange engine, I've wound up finding the exact same engine and Overton Grange (pristine) in Chester Model Shop. They've been put aside so I can buy them. Plus, don't let this make your mouth water, a 00 scale Fish & Chips Shop is due to be bought by me. Fancy sharing some with me? Lol.

I do like the passenger train with the fish vans
I also how you tried to re-create shots of engines moving about sheds
11:36 I believe the engine in the film was a V1 tank engine
13:03 that shot looks amazing! you should put the camera there more often
I actually tried to re-create a shot I filmed myself in Colorado with my HO scale trains. There was a steam engine on display, and a BNSF diesel passing it
