I love how Veronica Sawyer is not even in honorable mentions when she has to hit STUPID high notes, and only leaves the stage ONCE in the entirety of the performance. For about 5 minutes.
Skygirl 3000 yeah she deserves to be on the list so does chandler tbh because you have to be able to hold some high notes
Yea, Veronica might just be the hardest female role in musical theatre from this decade, i would say it is. She has the highest belts in all of the show in each song and ofc she is on stage most of the show so you also need to bd constantly on character, your acting and specially your singing (Barret blew her voice by playing Veronica) need to be at their best.
@An Thị Gia Trần I highly respect anyone who can sing Dead Girls Walking every single night. That last "yeah" in Dead Girl Walking is TOUGH as hell. I consider myself a pretty good belter, but I can only hit that note the whole time without my voice cracking 50% of the time I sing that song in my car.
Oof...one of the roles I want to play and maybe could play
Yasssssssssss
Ok but,
*Veronica Sawyer literally carries the entire play tho-*
True
Did you just say *play?*

Sophie Lynne Cool, just wanted to make sure you weren’t one of... those people... 😂
"Evan Hansen is an anxiety ridden high school boy that takes his part in a tragedy a *little* too far"
That's one way to put it-
just a *l i t t l e*
Okay but like Christine has to not only be an incredible singer but a ballerina as well, definitely should have been up higher. Also *Veronica Sawyer*
Veronica is easy as walking for a healthy person compared to Playing Christine, you should listen to how high and long Chirstine has to sing before you say anything, especially things like that.
Veronica literally carries the whole show, she has to be on stage the whole show while belting songs without any rest.
@@urmomdoer2315 I kinda have to disagree with you, yes, Christine is incredibly difficult, but so is Veronica. I am actually working towards playing Christine and as long as you have had some classical training it's not that hard. I'm not saying it's easy, but it's not too too hard. But I would never be able to play Veronica, since her notes are way too difficult for me, since I never learned how to belt. So...it really depends on the person and the type of training they received. but yeah...both should be in the top 3 hardest roles
The thing is, we need to remember there’s a lot of Christine’s material that’s pre recorded, including the entire title song. And it’s the title song that makes the role a pretty difficult sing...if it were sung live on the regular, but it’s not. Vocally, it’s somewhat of a cake walk lately, and many primary Christines have said that while they don’t exactly mind 2 shows off a week, it’s really not necessary like it used to be.
And the role hasn’t actually required the true pointe work in possibly almost 20 years, they all do demi pointe now. The only Christine in any recent memory who did do the full pointe was Sierra and that’s only because it was THE dream role for her and insisted on learning ballet and pointe for this reason, and I daresay...give her an edge over other ladies who couldn’t do the pointe, because most of them can’t.
That said, the ballet required for this role is not exactly strenuous either, it’s maybe two minutes long for only one scene and she’s done for the rest of the show, and I’ve noticed the Christines tend to be placed in the back of the corps. I can’t imagine it isn’t to hide lack of pointe. I’m not saying this as a dig, it’s just reality that most classically inclined singers who are capable of doing this role otherwise, aren’t highly ballet trained and from a casting perspective, it’s not worth an insane search to find someone who CAN do the pointe for one, two minute scene that isn’t super difficult.
@@urmomdoer2315 They're both different parts of your voices..so we actually really can't say anything. But constant belting does require a lot of strain and power and shouldn't be invalidated because of classical singing being hard. It's not about how high you go, it's about how much breath control, strain, pushing and power is required. Both are incredibly taxing.
If Christine came in number 10, God would come in number 1.
Your freaking right
Seriously. The truth.
Honestly tho
@Keanxz - Andrew Lloyd Webber has stated that Gethsemane is the most difficult song he has ever written. That must mean that the role of Jesus Christ in JCS is the hardest role (at least of those he's written) so you might well have been right with your guess for number 1!
Keanxz or Veronica Sawyer...😂😂
Christine needs to be higher up, you really need to be skilled to play the role well.
I mean you have to also pull off being a ballerina.
That VoiCE
Nope. You need to be a fantastic singer and a decent ballerina, but her acting is so shallow. Mama Rose really deserves number 1, I wouldn't even have put Christine on this list. Any soprano who is serious about musical theatre can hit Christine's notes. It's not that hard.
I told my wife there is musicals and opera. Phantom is right in the middle of the two. The range of Christine is operaesque or even touching opera. Range, power and control are needed. Possibly one of the most demanding roles for a female lead on Broadway.
@@bris8133 um excuse me. It took months to get even close to hitting those notes. THISE NOTES ARE WHISTLE TONES!!!!! it takes incredibly skilled vocalists to hit those notes but to hit them well is very challanging
Characters that could/should have been on this list:
Elle Woods - Legally Blonde
Veronica Sawyer - Heathers
Lola/Simon - Kinky Boots
But also if you're gonna mention someone from Hamilton I would say Aaron Burr is harder than Lafayette/Jefferson 🤷♀️
Gun and Ships though. Rapping that fast in a fake accent is crazy
What about DEH?
Andrew Rannells Falsettos the games I play
What about Eliza?
Philipa Soo/Hamilton Eliza
The AUDACITY they have to put Christine Daae in tenth place and evan hanson in second. Christine is not just a WAY harder singing role, but a harder acting role too. Evan hansen's entire character basically relies on ben platt's ability to cry on command.
Also, Christine has to be an incredible ballerina!
Veronica from heathers should be on here, the notes are crazy high and powerful, and she’s in almost every scene except one I believe???
Yeah, and the original actress's voice was significantly damaged after the show closed.
Agreed
Which scene?
Yes!!!! my friend got nodules from singing this part! She still can’t sing without it hurting like hell and she did it like two years ago

THEY DONT HAVE BEADLE SWEENEYTODD???? THE ROLE WHERE HE HAS TO HAVE AN INCREDIBLY GOOD FALSETTO???????
Apparently, not a single person at MsMojo has seen Heathers.
Or Legally Blonde, literally both actresses need lots of stamina because they rarely leave the stage. And don't even get me started on the vocal talent required...
Me and my friend made an agreement to watch each other’s fav musicals, so we watched Dear Evan Hansen and then Heathers. YEET they were both rlly good
Or Sweeney Todd
@@WhyAreWeHereJustToSuffer69Same. We watched BMC, then Newsies.
Or Mean Girls. Cady, Janis, Gretchen, Karen and Regina are all super hard roles for young girls aged 10-17. I played Cady when I was younger and it was fun, but really hard to nail.
Veronica sawer gets NO break time and has to hit fairly high notes just saying
AND that role can get really annoying if not the perfect balance of humor and sarcasm which is not easy to do.
Veronica does need more credit, but I don’t know how to watch a broadway musical. Can someone help?

WHO THE HECK DIDNT PUT VERONICA SAWYER ON HERE?!
Views and engagement. About it. They don't put a whole lot of effort into these.
“ben platt makes it look easy but not everyone can pull it off quite so well” personally i don’t think anyone can pull evan off as well as ben did he is a true god in that role
im just biased towards ben cause i've been listening to him in that role since i first downloaded the album, but even without my bias i don't think anyone playing evan can live up to ben
I agree
I know! He cries so hard in his role his stage makeup comes off. I wish I could cry on cue like that like damn
Is that why he's that high?
Sad that musical itself is so bad.
elle woods should definitely be on this list! she carries the show and is almost never off stage, and when she is it's for a quick change. she needs excellent breath support and good range with high belts, as well as show a range of emotions from omigosh you guys to legally blonde.
also christine was ROBBED!
and loads of dancing! Every person who plays Elle is inhuman honestly
Rowena Ravenclaw but a year 9 (13 year old) performed as elle woods at my school last year and did all the original choreography perfectly? they were amazing and i’m not saying it isn’t a difficult role but i think you’re exaggerating
@@claudiathomson3214 omg yes dont even get me STARTED on the choreography
Yes, to this! Having been in Legally Blonde twice, can confirm it’s one of the most high-energy shows that I’ve done (but also LOTS of fun!)
Mimi Is ace and that too... this list is a joke hehehee
Maybe you could do another list for the most difficult roles for child actors? Matilda, Annie, and Billy Elliot all require immense talent from the titular characters/actors, and at such a young age.
Same with Alison from Fun Home
Oliver too
jason from falsettos could be considered hard but not rly
I think the acting talent required for Small Alison in Fun Home makes Annie looks like a cake walk. Just my opinion, though.
@@laurenconrad1799 I am not familiar with Fun Home..I Do that the actress who plays Annie has to be able to sing, act, and dance and she has to learn to train the dog as well
The Phantom Of The Opera should be number one on that list. You should be a literal professional Opera singer to do this role fr.
You definitely do not have to be an Opera singer to do that role by any means. While it certainly is hard (and I disagree with certain roles being on this list) it by no means is harder than many of these other roles. Evita is certainly a harder role than Christine from a technical standpoint when you consider tempo, choreography, and voice leading (just comparing the two ALW roles listed for a sake of ease). All of these roles require classical training, that is for certain. (I am a classically trained singer and music major)
@Mariah Lewiz I mean, deh is my favorite musical, but yeah, I think doing that role is much harder, specially in the singing part
@Mariah Lewiz playing Evan, especially compared to Ben platt, is an extremely hard role. You know how many men have the range for that musical? Not many do. It’s a difficult role to play
Toby or Sweeney himself.
He's harder than Sweeney Todd. Even tho sweeney carries the entire show and phantom is on stage for less than 20 minutes. Not everyone is an old person.
WHEN I SAW
"Dear Evan Hansen" YOU *KNOW* IM WATCHING THIS
Me
HONESTLY SAME

@@perona_k I understood that reference (yes I'm also a Marvel fan)
Saaaaaame!
no i don’t agree with your picks at all. Christine requires raw talent. just about any actress can show emotion. but only a select few can’t adhere the TALENT that requires to hit those notes for Christine.
I disagree with all of this. Except that Christine should be higher up. You need training to hit those notes, breathing techniques, posture, round tones, that does not just happen because they're talented. But also, Phantom of the Opera is stupid. The plot is convoluted and Christine is nothing but a damsel in distress. Mama Rose has nuance and passion. And almost every song she sings is a show stopping solo.
nicole byrne YES! This. The voice is just a part of it. Acting WHILE singing is so much harder. I’ll take a mediocre singer who is telling a story over a good singer with no true intentions or motivations ANY DAY
You're mixing talent with training. It's not the same thing. I'm a professional musician and people always say how talented I am and I tell them, it's practice. Always practice. Go and practice.
Yeah, Christine at 10 but Evan Hansen at 2? Evan Hansen belts an A4! That’s it! I sing low and I can almost belt an A4!
Adino M right but Evan is up their mostly bc Even is a very emotionally taxing role. His songs are SO unbelievably emotional and difficult and cries for literally half the show. Even also has a bunch of nervous ticks and fidgets that the actor does to portray how much Even is overcome with anxiety 24/7 that Ben Platt even had to go to therapy after he left the show to get rid of the ticks bc he got so used to doing them and had to fix his back bc Evan has horrid posture
I can't be the only one who thinks Veronica Sawyer should at least be an honorable mention, right?
Your right, she definetly should have gotten at least an honorable mention
she's literally on stage for almost the whole musical so uH
Her and Heather Chandler especially because of the riff in Candy store
I know all the words to the songs and I’m only 12 😂😂 I know loads of lines from the musical and could almost relate any word to the musical
E.G my friend said her fave TV show was Sesame Street and I was like ‘MAYBE SESAME STREET IS ON ‘WOAH’
Yes! Her and definitely Elle Woods!!
THANK YOU. she deserves credit, heathers is a hard musical.
KIM FROM MISS SAIGON!! it’s a craazy part! So much belting and soooo many emotions! To play Kim you need to have a crazy vocal ability and you HAVE to be an amazing actress! I really think that should’ve been in the list!
Yes!
tru
Even though this has been said a lot, Veronica Sawyer really needs to be on this list! She hits some of the most insane notes!
Ikr they should've made her at least an honorable mention!
Billy Elliot the Musical should have made the list. Those kids train for like 9 months to 2 years before they can be Billy. The role requires a kid that can act, sing, do ballet, tap dance, do gymnastics, be able to street dance.
The West End Billy's would stay at a "Billy House" where they would take school lessons in the morning and then in the afternoon until at night (8PM), they would be training for the musical. The Broadway Billy's would go through "Billy School" for at least 9 months before they were ready to audition as Billy. Anyone who has been a Billy has gone through a lot for that role.
Joyce Echessa title says ten
Joyce Echessa like Tom Holland 😍😂
@@maddykosmoski5405 yeah, from what I've read, it was about 2 years for him from his first audition to the time he first played Billy.
Wait, what? They have to train up to two years before they can even _audition?!_ Jesus, that's ridiculous. I mean, of course the kid's auditioning would need a lot of training before being considered for a role but that's a staggering amount of time to put into a very specific role to even have just a chance to be considered. Again, I understand that having a lot of training but I wouldn't pay for all that training unless the role was guaranteed.
I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS EXACT COMMENT

@~heather~ Why is this my favourite thing ever?
on my way to get the lawyer-
I think heathers didn't get mentioned because it isn't a Broadway musical, it it's considered an off-Broadway musical.
Bell X Vlog yeah but the titles isn’t broadway musicals. It’s just musicals.
The title doesn't even say Broadway, tho. Just "Musicals".
It was also on west end last year so it shouldn’t have been excluded
True
It's West End not Broadway
Wow if 10 is Christine who the hell is number 1
so tru
Agreed. The vocal part is so demanding that the role is alternated between two performers.
Mama Rose
Mama Rose, I actually agree. Mama Rose is an insanely difficult role to sing and act.
@Asa Nestlehutt no its true my friend was an orchestrator for it
Evan Hansen shouldn't be so high. However, the fact that the actor playing him has to go to ridiculous amounts of therapy to keep themselves from sinking too far into the role should have been mentioned as the reason for him being on the list.
I guess it may be that and that the actor has to have a bunch of emotional break downs while singing... Idk I do agree
Wait... the actor has to go to therapy? Oh my goodness I’m concerned now.
Patrick Cortis Yes! The show in general has a therapist to to help both the casts with personal issues and also to help them when fans come to cast members with concerning problems. The therapist is also available for anyone else involved with the production such as the crew. (The therapist helps both the Broadway and touring productions.)
If you can't handle it maybe you aren't ready for that part. I've seen actors perform maids and they didn't need therapy to sink into those roles. That show is much freakier in terms of mental issues than DEH could ever accomplish. And when I asked those actresses how they can play such characters and not take that home with them they said that they have to leave everything out on the stage, if even one moment is not the peak at which they could perform they would feel the traits of the characters still in them. almost like sucking the poison out of a wound, leaving any in could cause a serious problem. This is not me saying that it isn't a hard role to play, just that maybe people like it because it talks about teen suicide and brings the talk of teens mental health to the forefront, which I am all for, but this show isn't a hard show to pull off compared to many others. Playing Judas, Jesus, Elphaba, Glinda, Roger and Maureen from rent, Judy from nine to five, Ti Moune, Dewey from school of rock, and many more could easily be argued as being harder to perform than Evan
The book is one of my favorite.
Just because no ones mentioned it, Even Hansens role is super impressive to be able to do well, Ben is quite literally crying to the extent that his makeup is coming off, and that turmoil mixed with how many dynamics go into each song makes him an incredible role. I once listened to a song and marked where each shadow vowel would have to go to be coherent while crying, I found 18 in 8 measures of music. It’s fantastic
This countdown is a whole mess
who else came here thinking Christine was gonna be #1?
can we talk about how well Patti Lupone has played at least 3 of the characters on this list
B Spitz she is amazing
She is fantastic!!
I actually saw her in Anything Goes in '87 I think it was?
Amazing.
Yellow diamond
She is a legend! A LEGEND. They should start a Broadway hall of fame!
please fudging tell me how Christine is ten like please explain
Yeah, I'm not saying she should have been in the top 3, but she deserved a higher placement. This role is not only very vocally complex, and requires a wide range to sing, but it is also a very complex role to play well. This character has been through A LOT, and is grappling with very complex emotions that even she herself doesn't understand sometimes. To play this role well and convincingly requires excellent vocal and acting chops, and people fail to realize this sometimes.
Bro friggin there’s:

@@Ventenna it was on Broadway and the West end.
@@Ventenna it's not good. it's not worth watching. The only good part about it is that Sutton Foster is in it.
I think you just took the most popular ones and picked what SOUNDED hard. Because half of these high schoolers do, Phantom should have been 1 because they have actual OPERA music in it.
People think that all popular roles on Broadway are hard they miss the actually incredibly hard roles from older Broadways. I know that Christie is pretty hard but it is only vocal labor rather than roles like Mister Mistofolees in Cats where he might not really sing but he has alot of harder technical dance choreography.
And Jekyll and hyde has the Confrontation in it which is like so impossible to do
FOR REAL, that last note she hits in phantom of the opera isn't even anywhere near the staff
Literally any high soprano can do it.
Kim - Miss Saigon?
Actress basically carries the whole show, it is very vocally demanding, the acting is very complex and most actresses who play her are very young.

Lea Solonga was awesome in that. (She was later the singing voice of Princess Jasmine.)
@@lisakaz35 yes, and Eva Noblezada was excellent as well

So...I love wicked, but why is elphaba higher than Christine???
I don’t know much about opera, but I’ve heard that it’s not too hard for an opera singer.
Alex Ramirez Christine doesn’t go through a lot of change. She doesn’t dance and all she really does is sing high notes. With anyone can sing christens songs with basic soprano or opera training. You don’t need to be a gifted dancer and actor in order to be Christine.
because of the broom toss
@@lindseysmith9019 good point
Elphaba uses a "belt" voice, in a mid-soprano range. She has to go from chest voice to head voice and back again dozens of times, smoothly. For a first soprano, Christine is not hard because it's ALL high.
How in God's name did Lafayette/Jefferson NOT make the list? Guns and Ships is literally the fastest lyrics ever sung/rapped on Broadway. AND he's gotta do it with a noticeable French accent.
J my personal opinion is that guns and ships isn’t that difficult, I can do it faster than the actual song. But this could just be me
@@cherrysilver966 make a cover on your channel if you can! I want to hear it!
Guns and Ships may be fast and a bit difficult but Getting Married Today from Company is more difficult. The song requires exceptional breath support to be able to properly execute the phrasing needed for each and every word and it basically banks on enunciation while still doing the song fast. Not to mention the amount of emotion you have to put into the performance balancing between insanity, desperateness, and nervousness.

I’ve seen Hamilton twice- once with a main cast and once with like the Z Team- and from experience, Lafayette/Jefferson should actually make the list. 1) You don’t realize how effortless Daveed Diggs makes singing in French sound until you hear someone trying and failing at it and 2) I mean, come on, “Guns and Ships” alone
I’m sure they wouldn’t have casted Daveed Diggs if he couldn’t do a French accent and rap fast. Every broadway actor has to have training to do their roles, but these roles on the list were probably much more tough to train to be. Daveed diggs wasn’t on stage as much as these other roles, as well as he wasn’t dancing a lot.
Except you know there are other musicals that deserved it 100x more to be on the list. I.E Miss Saigon, Legally Blonde, Candide, Flower Drum Song, Bonnie and Clyde, etc. His role isn’t as hard as it is made out to be in comparison to countless other productions.
Grotty he didn’t originally know how to do a french accent though. if you listen to the workshop version you can hear how he was still developing it and learning how to sing quickly while keeping the accent strong. it’s really difficult to rap in a completely different accent to your natural one
Adam Kaplan Me while reading this: Yeh, Daveed does make it sound so effortless..heh! Yeah I do always fail! *starts laughing out of failure then that evolves into crying*
Falling-Out-Trees 101 Again, every role needs training. Casting directors look for someone who have a basic foundation of the skills they need and see if the actor is willing to work hard to get what the casting directors are looking for. There are many actors who’ve had to do exactly what Diggs did, sing/rap in another voice/accent. It isn’t exactly fresh water in the theatre world. Lafayette/Thomas isn’t a hard role compared to many other roles like Elle Woods from Legally Blonde, Wicked roles, and Les Miserable.
The Color Purple though... I got full body shivers, insane!!!!
Right! And that one beautiful note from Constantine's Jekyll
Same! It was so good!
Lol I got goosebumps too.
I saw it on Broadway 3 years ago. ITS SO GOOD!
I always do anytime Cynthia sings to be honest
Miss Saigon: “I’d give my life for you” should definitely be on the list!!

Okay but *can we talk about that choreography thO* like I know they were only walking but the way they just walked in between each other like that was satisfying and just idk
Kim from Miss Saigon should be here. Her character started innocent, then she had to mature after all the emotional turmoil. The emotion needed to give justice to this role while remaining innocent is difficult
한빈모나 Plus the total onstage time is exhausting.
I wrote the same comment before I saw yours. TOTALLY AGREE! The only reason I can think of for Kim's omission, sadly, is "because ... Asian".
Especially when she gets beat by Thuy's soldiers, when she confronts and shoots Thuy, the nightmare scene, and her confrontation with Ellen. Whew, I'm tired just thinking about it!

#10 Christine
ONLY TEN???
Surprised that Kim from Miss Saigon is not part of this list.
I literally scrolled Thru the entire comments section just to find a miss Saigon comment
Yes! That is an extremely difficult role.
Same dude, same
Kim of Miss Saigon should be in this list.

Cats is amazing
hello, Cats the MUSICAL is good
I wasn’t saying it was bad. I was saying that the premise of a musical written from the viewpoint of cats is more of like a “messing around” type of idea. Also like I don’t like cats that much 🤷🏻♀️ but that’s just me and I appreciate the work put into it.
Cats is adorable!
CATS the musical is absolutely amazing when you see it live especially. The 2019 movie was an entirely different thing and a joke.

I don't know my name 🤣🤣🤣
Its about hard roles, Not roles where you have to sing high. Also they took in Account mit only the singing, but also the acting and the dancing. And lets be honest to Play Christine you dont have to act very difficult and she doesnt dance. The only Thing needed is a really great voice. So yes, she should be in the list, but Not Higher Up.
Nya KO1 she does dance, she’s dancing in the Hannibal opera scene. She was first a foremost a ballerina, then Carlotta threw her hissy fit and left and Christine got the part. Then she has to hit the high note in Phantom of the Opera. And the actor has to portray the emotional struggle she has to go through, especially during the last bit when she has to choose between the man she loves and her mentor/stalker.
I'm just happy that the role of Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson was mentioned. Although, basically every cast member of Hamilton who doesn't show up in one of the two acts plays double roles.
You need to be an absolute speed demon and rap god to do that part well!
Christine is an infamously difficult part to play, I'm surprised she's only ranked #10.
girl the person who played frickin mama rose also played Dolores Umbridge... like what?
Um Imelda Staunton was magnificent in both roles!
Yes ... brilliantly ... the best mama Rose I've seen, and I've seen a few.
She’s also played Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd.
She's reprising the role for Broadway soon. Can't wait!!!
She was also brilliant as Mrs Lovett, and together with Michael Ball, made the best Lovett/Todd coupling I have seen.@@lrspaloss
I was expecting something much better than this. there is hardly ANY justification for the picks. i thought there would be more things like explaining the vocal range required, highlighting difficult intervals, etc.
I realize this is mojo so my expectations shouldn't be very high, but the picks felt pretty arbitrary, even for a mojo list.
Surely *someone* has done this?
Christine Daee has a huge vocal range.
Elphaba is vocally quite challenging (although doesn't require quite the range of Christine).
Jekyll and Hyde covers the duality of good and evil in the same man!
And there was Diana Goodman... I've never seen it, but apparently it's about mental illness! So lots of diversity required there.
As for Les Miserables... I know that Val Jean is the star, but I've always thought that Ja'vert had the more challenging vocals. Of the boys, anyways.
In the professional version Cosette is quite diverse, but Amanda Seyfried played her a bit more sedate in the film... I know she's a good singer, but her range is probably too limited to really open up the way the professional stage Cosette does.

Oh my god I said that the moment that came out of her mouth. I said you are not qualified to make this list
@@thecringest8415 i have same issue as a bass-baritone
@@owenmccord0929 this!! Before I discovered my tenor range and I could only hit up to about F4, I was a baritone and it was extremely difficult to find musical roles that fit my range. I can now reach a B4 and thankfully I can do tenor roles and songs with ease. But lower ranges should be normalized in musical theatre.
Well I am a mezzo so we have Meg
"do you agree with our picks?" Hmmm no? I never watched phantom of the Opera but wow the notes that girl reaches are almost impossible, most of these songs on the list can be sang by a good singer but the ones in phantom of the Opera? Naaah you can be the most skilled singer of all time and you still won't be able to do that.
Most of Christines parts are prerecorded including almost all of the first song which is the song that would make the role extremely difficult had it been sung live regularly, but it wasn’t making the part admittedly a lot easier than you would think (this is not to say it’s an Easy role just not as difficult as it seems at first)
If Lady Gaga did Evita and got award recognition, Madonna's head would probably explode.
hunnerdayEDT the gaggery of the situation
Fingers crossed we get to see her head explode when Gaga wins best original song at the Oscars.
madonna stays unbothered
hunnerdayEDT Gaga would be amazing as Evita.

UMBRIDGE CAN SING? Also wheres my girl veronica Sawyer
Wynter C Oh my gosh I was wondering how I recognised her
IKR
Exactly
At a thespian conference in high school, after we performed on the main stage, we got middle section seats for another high school that performed Jekyll and Hyde. When the lead did the confrontation, I was blown away. Definitely a hard role acting wise and to tap into psychologically!
I know it wasnt released when this video was made but most people would literally go mute if they had to sing Alex Brightman's part in Beetlejuice.
Oh c'mon Veronica Sawyer or Heather Chandler at least deserved a honorable mention bruh what the h e l l
@@iicravedeath7658 well o wouldn't say they carry the musical but they are the two best and hardcore parts of the whole musical
I totally agree. I think the only reason she isn't on this list is because Heather's was off Broadway. But it seems like they missed a lot of talented people smh
Veronica?

TSM OMG! I died when I heard that 😂😂
Honestly he doesn't even really seem too difficult. Yes you have to belt a lot but really the character isn't too difficult
My dad played Jean Valjean during the one year or so it was released 😁😁
I think there’s a difference between demanding roles and hard roles that is mixed up in the list. I view “hard” as limited people can play them well based on their skillset, you have to be extra talented. Evita is a demanding role, but I feel many people can play it well and do it the justice it deserves. Christine Daie demands someone who has opera training on top of musical theater. Here’s my list:
1.) Jean Valjean (vocal range, carries the show, ages and grows as the show progresses)
2.) Christine Daie (opera training and difficult music, has to be convincing as a ballet dancer)
3.) Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde (vocal range, switches back and forth between believable characters)
4.) Tevye (Fiddler on the Roof)
5.) Elpheba (vocal range, being believable and likeable to the audience)
6.) D’ysquith Family
7.) A lot of roles in Sondheim musicals, like Into the Woods, Sondheim is very hard to sing and requires a lot of musical expertise
8.) Rumplejerry and Rumpleteaser (have to sing well, do ballet, and a cartwheel together on stage)
9.) Starlight Express (dances on roller skates)
10.) Lead roles in 42nd Street and Anything Goes (singers have to be talented tap dancers)
In short, if an average high school can pull off the musical and make it look “good.” Not Broadway quality, but good. Then the roles are not “hard.”
Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar should at the very least be an honorable mention. Not only does he drive the plot while going through an array of complex emotions, his vocals need to be top notch. No faking your way through that role. If you don't sing with proper technique, you won't last 3 performances a week, let alone the 8 shows per week Broadway is known for.
They didn't go back very far though, did they? I don't think there was more than one play mentioned that was performed prior to 1980. That leaves out quite a lot of contenders.
Yeah how was neither Judas nor Jesus on the list these parts are crazy
Gypsy came out in the 50s
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing an Jesus has a tough part too.
And so many Judas' fall short at Superstar. Not far short, but short.
Effie White from dreamgirls should be somewhere. They have three actresses playing her at once because
the role is so vocally demanding that if the actress did it every night for 3 weeks they would have extreme vocal exhaustion and lots of pain.
Chloe Wright Agreed.
Effie is too great to be dawdling on a list. If she were, she would have enough power to take the place of the entire list. Even if the list was the top 1000, Effie would have been easily able to replace all of the list with her strongness
Jennifer, the originator play Effie White 8 shows a week on Broadway! She's in the beginning of the this clip

"low tenor"?? It's called BARITONE!!! Geez. The woman didn't even pronounce Raoul correctly 🙄 Also, how the hell can you not include Company by Sondheim, or the music from The Scarlet Pimpernel?!
I'm pretty sure she was referring to the low notes in the tenor range. Since Jean is a tenor, not a baritone.
Or a G&S musical! :p
That's not at all a baritone role
Eoin Campbell he’s probably a bari-tenor
Elise Quackenbush Yes!!! Amy from Company is nearly impossible to do unless you have the most amazing breath support and diction.
I’m not getting married today is an immensely hard fast tempo song
Ugh I thought we all told watch mojo to stop with the musical theatre lists because they clearly know nothing about them
this one is pretty good stop complaining. it’s free content and if you didn’t want to you shouldn’t have watched it
Psychiatric Fuck And you do?
Falling-Out-Trees 101 its not that great how the fuck is Christine 10?!?!
Agreed, I think Ms Mojo bases the lists off what’s well known.
Asa Nestlehutt i agree and that is another reason why this list sucks. I’m mostly using Christine as an example. She is singing opera onstage for two hours in heavy costumes going through all of her emotions.
But can we talk about the characters in Beetlejuice? Alex Brightman has to produce such a scratchy voice, and sing over half the amount of songs in the whole entire musical as he belts the whole thing! Sophia, who plays Lydia, needs to get some recognition too! She’s a belting character, and she’s only seventeen. She should have been on this list, and Alex should have been here as well.
Agreed. Lydia is such a hard role for a girl aged 10-15.
Kim is damn hard, especially when it comes to acting. And you need a good two-octave range like Lea Salonga to be able to sing Kim well!
Where is Quasimodo? Pulling off the emotion and notes in Made of Stone is ridiculously hard.
And yes, I know it didn't make it to Broadway. But it deserved to.
Not to mention the character voice and posture change that is required
Thank you! I’m glad someone else noticed the lack of him. Nowhere in the title does it specify it has to be Broadway.
Umm. Quazimodo, from Hunchback of Notre Dame has to be number 1.
You have to belt out high notes WHILE HUNCHED OVER with a hump on.
Enough said
THATS WHAT IM SAYING. dont forget how you need a raspy voice too; adding on to the hunched bit, you need to be hunched over for 2.5 hours straight
When something from Hamilton is not here
Hamilton fans:REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Same thing goes for Heather fans-
Oliver Billingsley: yup
Well there's lafayette and thomas jefferson at the end
Clyde Uera true but he is only in honorable mentions
@@ollieh0p yeah I agree with you for Heathers, I couldn't agree in this video's opinion
so glad rose/gypsy are on this list. i feel like i NEVER see gypsy anywhere and it's nice to see it get some recognition :)
Kim from Miss Saigon should definitely be on this list. The amount of tragedy her character experiences every night on top of all the belting seems impossible to me.
valeriafrubio I totally agree
I agree imagine having to fall in love then going through all the heartbreak and tragedy Kim goes through every night, that's really difficult and the fact that she wasn't mentioned breaks my heart

REGINA GEORGE!!!!!!
HAVE YOU HEARD THE NOTES SHE HITS?!?!?!?!?!
I had no idea the Hasselhoff could sing like that!!
Hasselhoff is popular in europe as a singer, not so much elsewhere

Mary Sue Sagor - OMG, same!! It’s incredible!! I’m gonna try and watch the full performance after this!!
ewkelch - Uhh. I think you mean UMBRIDGE. 😂
Lol same, I knew he did music, didn’t know he did broadway
Quasimodo deserves to be on this list. In fairness, there are a lot of demanding roles in Hunchback, but Quasimodo has to have impressive vocal and emotional range
Plus having to be constantly hunched over (and/or be wearing something on your back) can't be easy for supporting the voice or body. Had a similar problem when I was playing Beggar Woman in Sweeney Todd, except for Quasimodo it's on a much larger scale because he sings multiple songs and is the main character, so he doesn't get much of a break.
And great body language
Garou was fantastic as Quasi. 😍😍😍
I’ve seen Pitch Perfect and I can’t believe that Ben Platt can sing this good in this new musical I’ve never seen before. I’m so wow, I want to see it. From playing Benji in Pitch Perfect to Evan Hansen, that’s awesome.
Rum Tum Tugger from CATS the musical is pretty hard, I'd say, considering the only person to play him well was John Partridge in the 1998 film. 🤷♀️
Idk I think Tyler Hanes was pretty good too, although a slightly different take on it. But yeah people always discredit fun roles as easy when a lot of the time they're just as hard, if not harder, than serious ones
Omggg I just saw Dear Evan Hansen this past fall and it was so so so good!
I agree! That musical is fantastic
Gigi The Waitress I saw it with the original cast and got backstage passes to meet the entire cast. They were so good and really nice when I met them

i’m so exited it’s coming to london in November!! i’m hoping i get to see it before next year
Gigi The Waitress omg you’re so lucky 😯😯
I love Dear Evan Hansn...but even I know it doesn't belong in number 2
PlatinumShiro Well, if you take into consideration how he sings in nearly every song but one, has to keep up this anxious and energetic persona, and his emotional evolution (and the insane amount of crying and simultaneous singing) in the show it makes sense.
@@kodidonahue Ok.. but there are characters like that on this list but more demanding and far more demanding presence.
Also he barely gets off the stage (only gets off like once) and there’s an article from the New York Times about how physically demanding the role was for Ben Platt.
He has to have a literally mental breakdown on stage. He is sobbing for the majority of the show. I think it’s pretty deserving
Carol Tawil Hedwig is one of the MOST physically demanding roles and is not even in the list
I love how they smushed Jefferson and Lafayette into one😂but honestly though he definitely deserve to be on this list ever tried rapping guns and ships
I can't ever imagine how Daveed Diggs feels while he's Laffayete because he has to rap super fast while he has a French accent. Like... HOW?!
Plus when he has to play Jefferson tooo 🤯 Washington on your side smacksss

Daveed Diggs said himself that it was easy once he got it right. He also quoted that faster raps are easier to learn

10. Raoul
9. Glinda
8. Fiyero
7. Evan Hanson
6. Celie
5. The Phantom
4. Veronica Sawyer
3. Mama Rose
2. Christine Daaé
1.Elphaba ( I think the number one spot is actually between Elphaba and Christine depending on if you’re better at opera or belting, for me, I am more gifted at opera but I wanna work on my belting so I can get as high as Elphaba does)
I had no idea that David Hasselhoff was such a talented Broadway performer in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
I know!
He was so good!
Jean Val Jean wasn't written to be so tough vocally but it's how Colm sang it so that's become the standard.
