Had this procedure used for my right anterior THR 4 1/2 months ago. It changed my life and my hip is perfect. And, having a great surgeon doesn't hurt.
Thanks! So I'm clear. The screw if necessary is used to secure the metal cup into the pelvis? Or the artificial hip to the cup? And what determines if a screw is used? Thanks again!@@Lathamhipsurgery
The screw is used to fix the cup to the pelvic bone. The head is held in place by the tension in the soft tissues. This is why you have to be careful when twisting the hip so that the head doesn't dislocate from the socket. I use a screw if the bone is weak or there is a deficiency, such as in dysplasia or when doing revision surgery.@@earlejames8475
Good question. There are no long term data to show that functional outcomes are any different compared to standard surgery. The Mako gives a very robust pre operative plan and helps the surgeon to achieve the desired position of the hip replacement socket. This should reduce errors and lead to reduced complications. Patients who have Mako are more engaged in the process of having surgery and I’m sure that makes them more confident. Time will tell whether or not the outcomes are better.
@@Lathamhipsurgery Hence why the code that surgeons use for this type of navigation is denied by insurance and the extra cost is placed on the patient as an out of pocket cost that doesn't count towards your healthcare Deductible or max out of pocket costs.
There is no simple answer. The best hip for an individual depends on the anatomy, pathology and surgeon’s training and experience. All of the major manufacturers (Stryker, Zimmer, DePuy, S&N) offer similar ranges of implants.

My surgery on rite hip first on May 19 this channel has really helped me understand . But I wouldn't want a robot doing my surgery , much prefer a good surgeon
Thanks for your comment. I’m glad that you find the channel helpful. The mako robot doesn’t do the surgery but is used to help the surgeon place the implants in the pre-planned position. It’s a bit like using GPS navigation 🧭 n your car. Wishing you well for your surgery. It will transform your life!
The robot doesn't do anything , the surgeon controls the arm, not the robot. It just tells the surgeon where to place the cup so you have a better gait or walk. Also, the robot helps get the leg length correct. 😊 it's more computer assistance than a robot.
Hello Doctor, thanks for the video. May I know which is the best material for implant for a 72 yr old female AVN patient? Is Robotic surgery good for old people?
Thanks for your question. For most people I use a stem made of stainless steel or titanium, a cup made from titanium, and the bearing is ceramic on polyethylene. The robot can be useful in complex cases, but it isn't necessary for most people. The most important factor to achieve success is to choose an experienced, careful surgeon who will help you to make the right decision about what is best for you.
Thank you for your comment. The mako technique will give an accurate measurement of the difference in leg length. This will help the surgeon to make sure that it is corrected by placing the components of the hip replacement in the correct position. I hope that answers your question.
@@Lathamhipsurgery I am due to go in for a hip replacement with the robot .how long does it take for the whole operation and they said I am eligible for the epidural and sedation is that the best way to go or a general anaesthetic I would appreciate your comments .thankyou.

Hello sir , i am from India, what is the advantages of robotic thr from patients perspective? Like increase in implants life . I am an avn patient. Planning to do robotic thr by next month. Same machine
Thanks for your question. The advantages are these. Firstly it gives you a very precise pre-operative plan so that you know the sizes of the components that you will use, and the positions into which you will put them. The robot then helps the surgeon to place precisely the components into the planned positions. These factors should reduce the risks of dislocation, leg length differences and in the longer term, hopefully reduced wear.
@@Lathamhipsurgery Very very thanks for quick and detailed reply sir. One more thing i want to know Doctor . Can i sit on the floor after robotic thr without the fear of dislocation. Not for regular use. Sometimes i need to sit on the floor for religious purpose. Thank you

How is the artificial hip secured to the pelvis?
It’s a press fit. The bone grips the rough surface of the cup and grows into it. We use screws when necessary.
