  • Hello Everyone,
This is our Mute Swan Nature Diary for the first part of 2024 - documenting the lives of our two Mute Swan pairs that live around here.
We've been following Claude & Maude, Frank & Francine, (and also Snowy & Blanche and Harry & Sally), for the last four years. We have learned so much about the species and the individuals we've followed.
It has been a real privilege and an absolutely wonderful experience.
We've detailed the challenges they face through the years, as they try to maintain their territories and bring up young, in this sometimes harsh and changing climate.
If you haven't watched any of these films, linked below is an update for 2022. If you have the time, maybe watch this 2022 update first.
It's proved to be our most popular film to date
    • The Circle of Life - a...
    Or our 2023 film here
    • A MUTE SWAN DIARY 2023
So how have our pairs fared since last year's update. Are they still around and are they still on the same territories? And have they managed to find nests, as the wettest Spring on record impacts on their nest sites.
Follow along with us from January to April 2024.
Thanks so much for your support and thanks for watching
And as always thanks to our friend Serge Pavkin from Ukraine for the wonderful music.

Hi Mark, yes all is well over here.
      Thanks very much.
Although we have had record levels of rain in March, and so the Swans have really struggled to find dry nesting spots.
We hope that the nests are not too close to the edges of the meres otherwise dogs or predators could mean the nest failing.
But another interesting year in prospect for us.
Hope you're well too mate 👍👍

Yes, the dog owners put me going to the Gravel Pits for a few weeks, I just didn't think it was worth the hastle. Three times it happened 🤦‍♂️, and when I said that the Wildlife Trust byelaws said dogs should be kept under close control I was met with - "well we like breaking the law" and a double two fingered salute. No wonder I haven't seen any Otters lately. 😨

Frank keeps disappearing as always. Every time we visit the nest, he’s no where to be seen. Far more interested in seeing off other swans.
Otters back on the lake, so hopefully the nest will be ok. 🤞

I hope Frank changes his ways and maybe gets a bit more diligent with fatherhood. It sounds like an interesting spring with mean little dogs and equally irritable owners, and the flutist - hope the geese and swans enjoyed the music! Hopefully the swans find good spots to nest with the higher water levels. I agree, spring is wonderful for viewing wildlife of all sorts. Very enjoyable swan vlog!

    Hi Dave and Sue,
Happy Friday to you guys!🎉We always look forward to these Swan diaries, Caught up with this one on the telly last night. We were wondering how the high water levels will affect the swans this year, by the looks of it, quite a lot 😔. We will keep our fingers crossed that there are some successful cygnets raised🤞. Jeez, that heron was way too close 😮, come on Frank!😬 🦢. The flutest was rather strange! However i did learn something new about Pete whilst watching, when he blurted out "i use to play the flute", 21 years we have been together, i didn't know that 😂. We were very sorry to hear about the irresponsible dog owners, honestly, people can be so disrespectful, good on you for speaking up on behalf of the wildlife👍.
Great watch, we look forward to the next update!
    All the best,
    Shell and Pete 😊👍

That's so cool about Pete playing the Flute!! quite a difficult instrument I think. Yes, it was a bit weird at 6am, to hear the the music (of sorts, they didn't sound very good😃) . As long as they don't bring the entire wind section next week 😃
Yes, the water levels have really impacted on the wildlife these last two years. Frank and Francine are back close to where they were three years ago when the nest failed 😨 Let's hope it's a succesful year and Frank steps up in his protective duties. Still need to find Claude and Maude.
Have a lovely weekend guys. 👍👍

Wonderful video Both. Fabulous to follow. We have 3 nesting pairs here. 2 always successful 1 not so. Our local creek is a release spot for swans after being sick or injured. We have up to 100 swans some winters. A small group of us look after them and monitor them. As well as feeding in hard times. Look forward to seeing what happens in the upcoming months. Take Care Both x

Oh that is brilliant Asa- how cool is that.
Absolutely love watching these Mute Swans. It’s been amazing learning about the species and these individuals. We started following them in 2019 and then with the lockdowns it was easy to keep going. Love being out there - every day is so different and there’s always something going on with them. I’ve identified a number of Swans on the lake through their rings - I didn’t realise until a few years back that there was a national database. One of the females here was ringed in Sussex in 2015.
Isn’t it flippin brilliant just being out there.

  • @ArcticNatureExperiences
    @ArcticNatureExperiences 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Mad dogs and flutists - you do experience a lot while following the social life of the mute swans. The only thing missing are Morris Dancers practicing for spring, but I think we can do without them:) As for dogs and owners some simply seems to have no understanding about how they affect wildlife, so it is a problem here in Norway as well. And I wonder how the soggy weather and flooding will affect the swans this year. I guess there is a risk that some nest will be located in more unsuitable places all over the country and not just where you follow the youtube stars. So let us hope that spring and summer will be good for nature this year! All the best, Ant

    • @NBNatureTrailvan
      @NBNatureTrailvan  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks mate. Yes, you’re right. I’ve seen a lot of social media pictures where Swans have had to nest near paths - and councils have put up barriers around them 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️. Some humans are just incredibly stupid! Especially where there are signs asking for dogs to be kept under close control. Maybe they should have one banning musical instruments! What next, an entire wind section 😃😃
Have a good rest of your week Ant, and a great weekend.
