    Fascinating video! I loved the bit about never eating the last dumpling. Also a classic British trait to leave a "polite" one (of whatever you're sharing), and force the rest of the table to have it instead! 😆

    Your production value is so amazing I'll have to sharpen up on it for my next video. Thanks for the inspiration. The waiter was happy to be in your video at that one part lol.

    thanks for the tips! i didn't know about tapping the table as a thank you to the waiter. question, i'll be going to london for the first time in my life. and i MUST eat dimsum as it's nonexistent in korea (there's like 1-2 restaurants but can't compare). any restaurant recommendation for cheap eats or decent price?? i'll be staying next to paddington station so hoping not to travel too far. thank you!!

    Excellent video. I've seen other videos on etiquette when eating at a Chinese restaurant but I learned some new things from yours.

    Hi Shu. Came across your content the other day and as a British born chinaman I loved the content
    In fact we are as a family visiting London next week
    Not personally had that noodle dish before but will try
    I normally order crispy noodles with pork, spring onions and bean spouts
    My mums always told us as kids not to point the tea pot at any guest as that would bring them bad luck?
    Were you ever told that?
    I’ve tried most restaurants but would you recommend this one highly?
    Keep up the Good work Shu!
    Alec

    Didn't realise that people turn round their chopsticks as I've almost always eaten with family or wife's family and we never turn them round (Malaysian Chinese and Mainland Chinese). Great video. Really good idea to show this stuff and you've a really nice presenting style.

      Shu Hong Kong is such a fun place! Oh yeah the food cravings are real! I remember the fighting for the bill thing too which was so funny the first time I saw it! X

    Great video! Thanks for the tips - I've always wanted to try dim sum but am put off by not knowing how it works, so this is brilliant :)
    Can you advise - if you were having dim sum for lunch (and weren't having noodles) how many baskets would you order per person?

    • @dejashu
      @dejashu  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Monica! Dim sum is designed to be shared (that way, you can try more than one dumpling/basket!) but if you're ordering for yourself, would probably say around 3 baskets? :)

    • @monicasmalley3336
      @monicasmalley3336 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the reply :) I think next time I walk past a dim sum place I'll feel more confident about going in and trying it

      There is no limit to the number of baskets. You can order as many as you like. 3 baskets are are probably right because it can be very filling.

    Coincidence I just had a $2 bowl of Dim Sum I got from the Chinese restaurant down the block for lunch. Along with two egg rolls. Then by confluence I happen to see this video on the right side while watching another while eating my lunch.

      It’s fate! Hope it was a good lunch - what was inside the bowl?!

      Yes, filled with pork filling and in a tasty, transparent soup.

    Watching this at 12pm when there's no available dim sum for the next 10 hours was a huge mistake. Great video Shu :D Quite interesting though, in New Zealand a lot of people just say Yum Char (heavy emphasis on the r)

    • @dejashu
      @dejashu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daaang - is there any dim sum places in Edinburgh?! All really? We don’t have the “r” when we pronounce it in Cantonese so may be a kiwi thing - interesting!

    • @dejashu
      @dejashu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are there* even - delirious from dim sum

    • @Ed-tm3qc
      @Ed-tm3qc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to emphasis on the r. Infact, the correct phrase is Yum Cha without the r.

    I really need to start practicing eating with chopsticks LOL! I'm going to Vietnam and Cambodia later this year and I currently suck at using chopsticks and don't want to look like a total loser.

    Hi. Interested to see your blog on etiquette. Unfortunately not many people in HK seem to understand its finer points our local restaurants seem to have passed it by but never mind good dim sum is good dim sum. I however must point out one inaccuracy f you want more tea etc or want them to stop pouring you tap the table with the inside of a loose type fist, tap with your finger nails. If you want to know the story behind it let me know. Keep up the good work, I wish I could be as slim as you are and eat the way you do.

    • @dejashu
      @dejashu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks John! Ooh I’ve not heard of that one before - be interested to hear the story about it! ☺️

      Hi many years ago a Chinese emperor liked to escape the restrictions of the court and eat with local people. To do this he disguised himself as a commoner. Unfortunately one night one of his fellow dinners recognised him, but fortunately didn't want to show that he had. To show his reverence he tapped on the table with his open fist as a sign of kowtaoing, every time the Emperor dinned with them again he did the same thing.This is the story behind the etiquette. Who knows if it is true

      Ahh I love that!!! Always cool to find out the origins of why we do the things we do!

      I always thought tapping with your fingers on the table was just to say thanks for pouring the tea like the lady said in the video.

    i am always very curious why does items of dim sum come in 3s instead of 4s! why 3?

    • @dejashu
      @dejashu  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s no particular reason that I know of other than that it depends on sizing and serving! Some dumplings are bigger than others 😅

    • @theUnusualMomma
      @theUnusualMomma 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      4 is a 'bad' 'unfortunate' number in chinese because it sounds like death... but i suspect there is only 3 instead of 4 because that way you will more likely end up ordering 2 orders and more business for the restaurant.
