just before Ronson joined Bowie, he was cutting the grass down my street, he even looked like a rock star then, I was about 9, few months later I saw him on Top of the Pops and was left dumbfounded, I actually met him a few times as I dated a girl who lived a few doors away from his mother, what a lovely guy he was, and an amazing player, very talented man.

Yes. I would consider myself very lucky to have even met Mr. Ronson. Extremely underestimated musician. He could write the whole orchestral score for pretty much any piece of music. Bowie became a household name on his back and never really gave him the credit due. One example that comes to mind is Lou Reeds perfect day which he wrote all the music for (the violins etc. in the background) and conducted the orchestra. A true genius.

Another great and supremely watchable video mate. I had the lemon drop that vintage made and it was a fantastic guitar for the price so I know how good these vintage can be.
I got my epiphone 50s Goldtop a few weeks back and I'm loving it so far.
I think you can get so much enjoyment out of cheaper guitars due to lower expectations personally, and the guitars being made at this price point these days are so much better than those from the 90s and 80s.

I think they're very good guitars at any price point, but I see what you mean. 30 years ago these opportunities did not exist. You either bought the big two brands and made in USA , or you ended up with junk that needed to be tuned after 10 minutes along with a daily truss rod adjustment. 1/2 " high action. ironically, up to 1980 you could buy the big two name brands for a song. Used. Mustangs, Duo Sonics, LP Juniors were beginner guitars and no one wanted them but punk rockers.

I have a lemon drop and I have played it a lot got one of the early models and it is fab.
Your comments are correct the cheaper instruments do not build your expectations up and when they exceed your expectations themselves they do they made you happy.

    • @donge9589
      @donge9589 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@robertdickinson889 I'm glad you agree, I totally regretted selling my lemon drop. It was killer when I dropped seymour Duncan's in it, but I did miss the stock sound as I felt the Wilkinson pickup's were warmer. I my old guitar for sale a year back in my local store for £299, if I had the spare cash id have got it back in an instant, the pickups alone that I put in it were £200 so someone got a decent axe there. They have a great vibe and are great for using as a solid base to upgrade, but are perfectly giggable with stock spec.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!! I can barely play anything on a guitar, but no other instrument gives me the shivers and goosebumps like an electric guitar. Mick Ronson has been so dear to my heart since I was 16. (I'm 65 now.) I most especially love his "I'd Give Anything to See You" from the CD "Just Like This" as well as "Angel #9" from his "Play Don't Worry" album. Such a tragic loss to lose him at only 46. Miss him so very much. Thank you again for this wonderful review and the fantastic music. Best wishes. (New subscriber)

I like your reviews, they're refreshing in that one 'Hears' a good overview of the instrument with all types of tones dialed . It's not just 'distortion on 11' on the treble pickup which is so common on YT resulting in many guitars all sounding the same. As players, we all like different tones from each other and you do an excellent job of capturing the different personalities a particular instrument may possess..Keep up the stellar work.

Thanks Matt that's really appreciated!... I must admit this film was a real labour of love having to try and learn some of those riffs, and I definitely look forward to my next excuse to dig into Ronno's music for some inspiration. A couple of those riffs seem to have stuck and keep creeping into my jams!... I will keep doing this if only in the hope it improves my playing. Cheers brother! 🙂👍🎸

Sounds like a great little guitar and fair play to you, you did a great job getting that Ronson sound. his bending and vibrato are bloody hard to replicate lol. Listened to Lou Reeds transformer album a little while ago just to listen to some of Mick Ronsons influences on it and it's all over the place. Mick played guitar, piano, recorder on the album and did the string arrangements. Incredible talented guy

You take your time, it is pacefull, veeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyy instructive, very clear (very low english flow, very appreciated for "frenglish" speaker like me :)), structured, you give your own opinion, your play is "listen-able" (not a muddy distorted compressed sound that gives the same sound to any guitar), and you make me (us ?) discover new guitars and new brands.

Nice video. I'm pleased to hear Vintage are still churning out decent guitars. I have a VS6 (SG copy) from 2004, when it was still the "right" shape and it's a fantastic guitar. It plays great, sounds fantastic and the only part of it that's been replaced (besides strings of course) is the output, which failed when the guitar was probably about 15 years old or so. My dad paid £120 for it from Andertons due to a small finish blemish inside one of the horn bevels where you really can't see it. At the time, I was after an Epiphone G310, which had a bolt on neck and the cheap crap hardware, generic sealed gear tuners and so on, but this guitar had a set neck, the Wilkinson hardware and Wilkinson pickups, which I massively preferred to the pickups Epiphone used at the time, which always sounded dead and muffled. It was less than half the price, so was terrific value. I think the fact I still have it now, 20 years later, speaks volumes. My only real gripe is the pots are like on off switches so aren't that useable if you ride the volume a lot. I have got some 500k CTS pots to go in it but just keep on finding reasons, many of which are just rehashes of the word "laziness" not to do it. I did also flip the magnet in the neck pickup for the Peter Green out of phase middle position, other than that and the replacement output, it is totally original and still plays beautifully.

How did I miss this one? I'm happy that it popped up in my list of suggested vids. TBH, I wasn't in love with the sound at first, then I was blown away by that outro. Well done! I'm surprised that you didn't mention the mis-matched knobs. They're a nice touch, and definately a nod to Mick Ronson's LP Custom.

Hey Colin. Watched your Mick Ronson tribute guitar video again for fun and I have to say you did a great job. I'm the same age as you and got turned onto Ziggy in '72/73. Ronson's tone and Bowie's persona mesmerized me. I don't know if you've heard it but Bowie authorized the 1972 Santa Monica show for cd release on 2008. The second half of the show, after Moonage Daydream, is an incredible array of crunching, fizzing, overheated tone and noize that is pure art. And to think that he would put his Gibson and Marshall thru all that, show after show! Thanks for reminding me with your playout at the end, you're a good man!

Mate….I own 3 different Vintage brand guitars and I love them. I have my local distributor do a 3 step crown, level and polish the frets, change the pots to 500K, and set the intonation to E flat, which is what I prefer.
The good thing about Vintage is that they are their own brand. They’ve done enough different to stay out of court, and they stand on their own.
Think of guitar design like notes in a scale….they’re only 12 notes, and they’ve all been played before….just like guitar design.
    Cheers Colin 🎸🤘

I owned it for 2 years, then traded it for an ESP explorer. Which I totally regret now. The ESP is awesome, but... it doesn't play like the Vintage did. What a really beautiful guitar.....just squint a little when your eyes reach along the neck to the headstock! And produces a nice Ronno like sound. You obviously liked playing it, and played those Ronno inspired licks really well. Just goes to show though what an incredible artist he was (and the guitar being just one of his many talents). I'm not ashamed to say I have a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes just thinking about how cruel it was for him to lose his life at such a young age - I'm 14 years older now than he was when he passed away, and he should be the one sat here jotting down a comment or two, not me. I'm sure that he would have loved this guitar; not only that, the G company would surely have produced their own tribute version if they had anything about them, even though Mick would have so humble in his appreciation! Long live Mick's music, there'll never be another one like him. From being a simple gardener in Hull to being the genius he was always meant to be. Thank you Mick, and thank you David Bowie for bringing Mick's talent to all of us!

For me, Ronno, along with Pagey is my ultimate 'guitar God' (I even named my puppy Ziggy lol). I met him once, back when I was at Uni in Hull in the early 90's. He was a really sweet guy, so down to Earth & didn't seem to mind one bit being accosted by a silly star-struck young, wannabe guitar player, just starting out gigging & playing in bands etc (not to mention coming down big time from the night before's ahem.. chemical indulgences lmao). It was something I'll never forget & I've always wanted a LPC with a natural finish coz of him (& yeah, I get that his was a '68 with a refin but I really don't fancy paying for a black one, to then ruin the value when I can get one stock from the 70's for way less money & with all its' mojo intact). It's kinda my holy grail guitar (along with a '64 335 in cherry, with PAF's & block inlays but let's be honest, my better half, God bless her ain't ever gonna let me blow the kinda cash necessary for one of them lol, so 70's LPC it is). I really dig your tone man. It's fairly similar to mine, only better I'd say

Been a Strat player all my life, apart from a short time I owned a Gibbo V (effing awful). But for some reason I really do like the look of that Vintage. Maybe it's because I'm a Hull lad and "Ronno" is a legend. It sounds pretty good for a "Knockoff". I can't believe I'm actually thinking about going over to the dark side and getting a Les Paul. I can tell you liked that guitar it's hard to fake enjoyment. This was one of your best jams mate, you really got the feel going there.

Trev Wilkinson knows how to make guitars better. Glad you like it. He gave me a italia to try out, it felt like I had been playing it all my life. I now use a Wilkinson prototype, Les paul, knock off if you like with slight cutout for your thumb. Best guitar you could have. I'm not a brand person, couldn't afford in the day. 1st guitar Antoria les paul junior, 2nd was an Aria pro 2. Jimmy page rip off. Both Trev has seen played..

My comment is now 2 years after the fact but I recently bought a Vintage T72 telecaster copy in cherry burst with Wilkinson hardware, Wilkinson mini humbucker in the neck with a single coil in the bridge. The neck is one piece maple the body is ash two piece. It plays great sounds awesome and excellent value for money at $550.00 Australian. Vintage are well made instruments and compare to other brands but cheaper in price range. I really love this guitar as a great alternative to more expensive brands.

I've been a big big Vintage brand guitar fan ever since I bought my V100MRPGM, must be getting on for 15 years ago now. I also have a couple more Vintage Guitars including a VS6V SG with Vibrola (bought in memory of my ex-'68 Gibson of course ☹😥).
Anyway, Vintage Guitars, great guitars for the money. Mine definitely hold up compared to my actual Gibsons. Excellent guitars in my opinion.
