  • This week we are impressed by the highly affordable Vintage V100 Lemon Drop which punches above it’s weight in the specifications dept… but sadly our attempt at playing a slow blues tribute to Greeny is a bit less impressive!

I have said it but will say it again: I watch a lot of guitar TH-cam channels but yours is by far my favorite. You magically manage to give the viewer the impression that they are sitting in the room with you with a pot of coffee in order to chat hours long about details that only guitar Nerds like us enjoy to debate about. This is pure pleasure to watch! All the best. Yann

    Hi Colin,
I've been looking forward to this one! 😁
Obviously I'm not affiliated with Vintage, JHS or any kind of musical instrument seller or advertiser.
I have always thought that Vintage are brilliant guitars in general and punch well above their weight.
I own a couple of Vintage guitars amongst my 32 (yes I'm a bit of a guitar nutter, but I have been playing for over 50 years!l).
I have one of the original Greeny/Moore Lemon Drops which I bought about 15 years ago and it is one of my absolute favourites to play. Definitely as good as any of the Gibson Les Paul's I have, which include an original Gary Moore Signature Les Paul, a Gary Moore BFG and a 2006 Les Paul Gold Top. I do have smallish hands, so I find the neck profile on the Vintage very comfortable.
Earlier this year, I decided to treat my two sons (both very good guitarists) to a Lemon Drop each. One son is Left handed the other Right handed. I couldn't find a dealer with both in stock, so ordered from different ones.
When the guitars arrived I was very disappointed that they looked very different. On the Right handed guitar the relicing was one of the best I've ever seen, hardware everything. The other, not half as good. (I'm not a huge fan of relicing, but these are based on a specific guitar).
Anyway, after many phone calls to various dealers I ended up calling Vintage (JHS) and actually spoke to the MD Dennis Drumm. He is passionate about guitars and we chatted about guitars and "the old days" 😊. He asked me to send him pictures and then phoned me back and explained that the guitars were made at different factories in different countries.
He then asked me to pack them both up and he would arrange for them to be collected (at no cost to me I might add) and that he would give them to his guitar tech to see what could be done.
After a few weeks two new guitars arrived (again, at no cost to me) absolutely identical in the new, much better relic job. I was very very impressed to say the least and my boys (who didn't know that they were getting them) were over the moon!
It turned out that they had ordered two brand new guitars (including a Left Handed one remember) from the factory that currently make the Right Handed version. Can you honestly think of any Manufacturer that would have gone to such lengths? I doubt it!
The guitars look fantastic and play beautifully.
The set up, workmanship, fret ends everything are impeccable and cannot be faulted.
I'm sorry that this has been such a long comment, but I thought that the story was worth sharing.
Incidentally, looking at your particular guitar, I don't think that it is one of the very latest models. I'm guessing this mainly because the hardware does not look relicted and because of the country of origin.
Thanks for yet another great video
    Kindest regards,
    Cheers, Steve. 😊😎🎸

Thanks Steve, that's a great story and no need to apologise I really appreciate it when people take the time to share their own experiences with these guitars! I will definitely be seeking out more if these and shall not take their name in vain ever again! 😆👍

Picked up an older burst model that I think had been someone’s everyday player. Had some wear but it had been well taken care of. 2 piece body 1 piece neck with a rosewood board. Picked up for about $200. Can’t beat a deal like that.

The first Vintage model I saw in a store many years ago. The magic always happens with both pickups on and the volume and tone controls are very interactive and offer endless tonal variety.

Thank you Colin, it was a surprise and a delight to hear my name mentioned on your video! And yes, I’m happy to share the word “chewy” with you 🤣. Nice sounding guitar actually - quite honky and vintage sounding (no pun intended). But then my eyes popped out their sockets when I saw your amp…. The sight of a Bluesbraker gets me kinda giddy 😊. Great review as usual. Cheers Colin 👍

    • @theguitaristas
      @theguitaristas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Cheers Paul, thanks for dropping in and thanks for the inspiration! Finding the bluesbreaker was one of those happy ‘accidents’ we have from time to time… while trying out a very nice SG Standard in Guitar Guitar Camden I saw this ‘well used bargain’ and thought it would be a good match for the guitar. Yes of course I walked out with both (to be more accurate they delivered the amp… it’s a tad on the heavy side!) no regrets on either front and always nice to find an excuse to plug in to such a beauty… certainly worked a treat with this guitar 😎👍👍

My original run V100 is still my best guitar to this day. In the time I've had and sold an SG, an early 2000s Les Paul, and Epiphone Les Paul. It's the most les Paul sounding Les Paul I've ever played

Interestingly enough, it seems like these guitars vary a lot in terms of the actual parts and aging. I have had two; one had really amazing dark mahogany, all hardware was oxidized… the guitar just felt old etc. the other was a combo of new parts and old parts; the mahogany wood looked white and the aging just looked strange because the guitar was shiny but the chips didn’t look natural etc. So basically, there’s an inconsistency in they production line?
So, my felling is they are great, but they are all a bit different in how they are finished for sale. The one that was aged properly was the one I still have and it’s really impressive
( I did add a lightweight tailpiece and did some final work on it to get it ready for professional use- but I am a believer in these.

Another great video man, I love the format, never change!
Re this one having a high fret and too-low action, any guitar I buy these days, regardless of brand and price, I take straight to my guitar tech for a setup. Fretwork from everyone from Gibson to PRS needs work straight out of the box these days, and I find a good setup makes most things great. My 59 Epi was horrid, same with my PRS SE, but once I got them setup they were great. The worst I’ve seen was on my Gibson SG Modern, needed a lot of work to get up to scratch.

Being a gigging musician it’s much more cost effective alternative to the much higher (5x the price) for stage work. The stock Trev Wilkinson pups are a very nice PAF representation.
The long neck tenon also aids in more sustain.

I upgraded to Switchcraft toggle switch and input jack, 50s style wiring, 1 Meg volume pots, 500k tone pots, orange drop caps and removed the out of phase wiring due to it not being so good as the Epiphone version. Just preference. Thanks for the awesome video.

Hi Colin, I am really enjoying your channel.
I actually have one of these Vintage PGM lemondrop guitars (non-relic'd version) which is how I first encountered you reviews and I have been enjoying them since then. For the record, my non-relic'd version ( from the "reissued" range in Vintage-speak) seems very similar to your one. It definitely has the same rats-nest wiring complete with sandwich bag wire closures. The unrelic'd finish is a nice glossy poly. The binding appears perfect to me with no file marks near the frets. The cosmetic fit and finish is excellent. I did find when I got it home that the 3rd or 4th fret was a bit proud and I had the frets levelled by a local luthier. My one sounds great, plays great after its trip to the luthier and has Spinal Tap levels of sustain. Key difference between my one and the one you review is that mine is a whopping 10.5 pounds! Other difference are a slightly different, narrower tuneamatic bridge, its not drilled for a pickguard and it has the oblong (kluson-style?) tuners with greenish tulip knobs (this last is a nice touch as these are the type of tuners that apparently left the holes and marks that you see on the relic'd version)
Very minor point: you mention you don't like the single screw truss rod cover but it does have the advantage that you can rotate it out of the way without even needing to unscrew the screw.
Keep up the great work and looking forward to your weekly reviews!

Yet another good review, Colin! I think they got the "out of phase" sound just right. I've got an old '81 Boat Anchor with it and believe that the magnet was just flipped. Ideally you want to end up with the right tonality of both Pete's "Merry-go-Round" and "Lazy Poker Blues" without putzing around too much... It's 8:30 am here so, forgive any blunders, I'm off to bed.
    All the best, Pete.

My V100PGM (non relic) was a fantastic guitar. If it wasn't for the thin neck, I never would have strayed. Those Wilkinson pickups are still my favorite humbuckers. I bought an Epi Lazarus and immediately swapped in an identical set of Wilkinson WVC pickups and didn't sell off the Vintage until I was satisfied that the Epi sounded identical.

Great review as always, I believe the tuning pegs are copies of Schaller tuners that were fitted to the original guitar when Gary Moore owned it as were the mismatched control knobs. I'd heard comments on the quality of recent Vintage guitars being poor when previously I knew they used to put out good quality knock offs, so a nice review that puts that straight. I do like the out of phase sound, very interesting. This is a very nice guitar except for the relicing. I'm no fan of relicing, although yes some of them look good but this looks comical and puts me right off. I think I'll keep an eye out for a non reliced version and think about getting one. Thanks!

I’m not particularly fond of the amendments Vintage have made to the Les Paul shape but have been thinking about getting one of their models recently, the wine red Les Paul copy with Mini Humbuckers!
It’s the only copy I’m aware of that is fitted with Mini Humbuckers and also because I used to own an 83/84 Les Paul Deluxe in wine red with Mini Humbuckers that got stolen when burgled many years ago!

Great review and upload, resonates with me because I have a 2012 JBM goldtop 57 version...the hardware was ok but not great and has been swapped out in favour of an aluminium stop bar and Faber bridge with brass saddles, the pick ups were great at sounding weak and PAF'esque but didn't ever really clean up, maybe due to the 350k volume pots???I changed the pots for CTS and the PUPs for some SD slash pro 2's but the Wilkinson ones were really nice sounding and now live on a mates 335 copy, I think they were about 7.5k on the neck and 8.8 on the bridge-ish. I had to remove the black satin paint on the body and neck because it was ridiculous, overly thick and toy-like in it's application, I mean really poor with ripples and imperfections all over, I sanded then oiled and polished to reveal a 2 piece body , looks very much like Sapele , lighter and with more reflection in the grain, and a 1 piece Mahogany neck but with a 2 piece heel, has a long neck tenon . The Grover copy tuners were crazy heavy and a terrible ratio so I swapped them out for some locking Klusons which has stopped the G string going out of tune as well...and to finish it was covered in a thick , yellow laquer to make it appear aged...removed it and buffed the gold top to a shine....oh and a bone nut. Now it is an absolute beast...an 11.5 pound beast but an awesome sounding guitar, 3/4mm action at the 12th and practically plays itself. Adding the aluminium stop bar gave it a more honky, LP tone, the CTS pots allow you to clean up really nicely and progressively . I may plug the bridge pin inserts and drill them out for the standard ABR threaded posts. And finally...mine doesn't have the swooping curve shape on the back of the neck/body area...it's the same as a Les Paul.

Very nice review Colin, I really enjoyed watching and especially appreciate you confirming that the bridge and stop bar can be swapped out with Epiphone and other aftermarket brands. That's very good to know. I enjoyed your playing as well and am envious of your Marshall BB! 😄
Totally out of the blue and by freak coincidence - I came home with a used one of these today. Then I hopped on you tube to research it and came here to your video! My guitar shop received it as a consignment instrument and it's much older than the "new" model that you reviewed here. If I'm reading the serial no. correctly, it looks to be a 2008 model (?). It's a factory relic'd version and seems a bit more worn then the "distress" one you have. Truss rod cover is different (very plain) and the pick-ups are just amazing. The neck is very thin. Everything else looks the same spec wise to your review model. I really like it and, like you, am very impressed with the quality and playability of the instrument. So pleased that Vintage can produce something like this at such a good price point.

Another great video!!! That thing sounds pretty sweet but I'll never understand the whole paying someone to vandalize your guitar thing...🤔
I have an old Epiphone Les Paul Plus Top PRO that I flipped the neck pup around in and it sounds as close to Greenie as an Epi is gonna get!!! I think it's more to do with polarity reversal than actual circuitry "phasing" because my tone knobs even act like little wah wah pedals when my pup switch is in the middle position and one volume is slightly rolled back.
Also, a one piece neck on a four piece body is a bit questionable to me. I'm not saying it isn't so, I'm just saying it's odd. Personally I'd rather have the scarf joint...😉
I really enjoy your reviews... can't wait to see what's coming up for next week!!!

Famous for its out of phase sound, I had two early version (2012&13 ) of this model and one had been modded with seymour duncan whole lotta pickup installed both were excellent. The early models had 3 piece necks and also had rosewood boards. My main problem with the guitars and why I got rid of them is because I dont particularly like what JHS have done to the body shape but I understand why they had to do it. Also the half arsed relicking is embarrassing especially those faux headstock tuner holes!

I had budgeted for a Gibson when I walked into a local music store in 2011. walked out of store with a Vintage lemon drop and saved me a few thousand. I recall reading an interview with ace guitar designer Trevor Wilkinson, Seth lover from Gibson had shared with him exact specs of PAF pickups and other key measurements - Trevor replicated specs using cheaper manufacturing locations and some minor compromises. Trevor did say in same interview that lemon drop will favorably compare with many guitars coming out of Nashville Gibson factory. Not sure how quality of vintage lemon drop is today but mine was an absolute beauty 10+ years ago. action did need a minor adjustment but that's it. I still have same guitar and never thought of selling it- (neither did I buy a Gibson)- an old vox amp plays just fine with lemon drop.

I used to have one of these in the late 2010s and early teens and it was great. As a Fender diehard, it was my first “Les Paul” and l loved the weight and the fact the pickups weren’t as fat as a lot of Les Pauls. It looked the part, too, except, obviously, for the pointy horn. It played pretty well, too. In fact the only bad thing l could say about was that top was very thin maple and mine cracked lengthways down behind the control pots. I sold it eventually after finding an even better Les Paul “knockoff” as he puts it, a stunning, if slightly beaten-up 1976 Greco that’s as good as any real Lester I’ve ever played and way better than many.

Vintage guitars are unbelievable bang for your buck, only thing i would say is the wiring and electronics can be horrific, ive had to send 2 back for the pickups cutting out. Upgrade the electronics and you have an epic guitar. I have a v100 in tobacco burst and its a beast! I also have the v6 hendrix signature and its my favourite. If vintage upgraded there electronics these guitars would be unbeatable at this price point, the wilkinson hardware is flawless at keeping the guitar in tune and wilkinson pickups are amazing for there price!!

The middle pickup selection is great but even after all this time I still can't quite figure out the peter green tone. Definitely in the fingers and that old tape recording equipment.
