The differences in the sound clips between the R8 and the 59 are miniscule.

I fully agree, Tony. In a blind listening test, I would be just as likely to choose the Epiphone and be better off for it. Furthermore, scarf-joints don’t bother me. One-piece headstocks set at a 45-degree angle (hyperbole alert) just looking for an excuse to part company with the neck, do. All things being equal, l’d take a vintage Epiphone LP over a Gibson, almost any day of the week. On Sundays, I would take the Gibson, sell it and, come Monday morning, find the best Epiphone LP example money could buy and play it until l and the cockroaches were the last inhabitants on earth. I shit you not.

I’ve never touched a 58 or 57 so can you tell me, is this epi 59 neck any different that your R8? Seriously, I ask this because my epi 59 has a significantly large neck.

also agree, I'm leaving mine stock too. it's my first Les Paul and I love it. I am considering polishing it though, the satin is just a touch too satiny for me. but I probably won't.

I agree, I'm very happy with the Burst buckers!! I've read that they are unpotted in our 59's. I bet that has a fair bit to do with how responsive and "airy" they sound. It's interesting to note that the original PAF's from the 58-60's Bursts were not potted either......

What a superb series of videos. There are four things I really enjoyed about them. 1. You showed us all your ‘working out’-when you changed the pickups you left in the slow bits and this demonstrated what was fiddly and what wasn’t. 2. The fact that you adjusted your approach as you went along. Again this gave me the feeling I was watching a knowledgeable person actually working things out. 3. Your choice of musical examples and the affection you played them with. Gary and Greeny. What a combo. 4. Your humility, plain-speaking and the general lack of swagger in the videos-no fake astonished looking thumbnails. Just know-how, fun, curiosity and love of music. All brilliant. Thank you.

Okay. I've been with you through the whole thing. Here are my observations. When you went to the nickel-tailpiece, you lost quite a bit of the brilliance and resonance of the steel. However, when you swapped out the burst-buckers for the Monties, you gained it all back, plus a slightly more touch-sensitive dynamic which seems to be most notable during your more subtle bends. Is it a win? I'm not sure. But it's decidedly not a loss. So, this is where your gut's gonna have to cast the deciding vote. You certainly personalized it, to some extent. Either way, it was a blast riding along with you. Take care. It's bedtime on this side. And that's where I'm headed.

Never expected the differences to be so tiny on the upgrade. Just got a dark burst Epi 59 with some nice bold figuring and couldn't be happier. Neck profile is perfect for me. What really amazed me is how different it can sound depending how I play - more than most other guitars I've played, even the Gibson SG I own, and to get those sweet tones I have to soften my picking style a little and mess around with the volume and tones a lot more. I think this guitar is going to really inform how I learn to play going forward, so to me that's a priceless feature that I didn't even know I needed. Your video is a brilliant review of it - great work man (especially the Peter Green track, my absolute favourite guitar player who ever lived).

@@CapableFox64Its fascinating. Prior to you swapping, it was "Close ish " to Jimmy Page #1 Led Zeppelin set ..Because it is UNCONVENTIONAL no mainstream winder makes a set like that with the LOW Wind in the bridge. The "Page Set is : Bridge T Top replica 7.5k Short A5 Magnet : Neck pickup OVERWOUND 8.6k PAF Alnico 2 set REALLY low to balance with bridge . I demo this set on my channel and it nails the Jimmy Page Tone which is impossible with Conventional thinking.

What an excellent, informative and fun (the best part) series. I just picked up a 59 in the cherry burst finish and could not be happier. Plug into my Fender blues junior, click the Tube screamer (sometimes) and have some FUN!! The interview with Matt was the best. He gave all of us a real insight as to why a pick up does what it does and how changing everything at once just isn't the way to go. Many thanks & can't wait to see what you review next!!! I really liked the Faber tailpiece, it provides a nice cheap upgrade option for people. I thought both the burst buckers and the Monty's PAFs sounded amazing. I'm happy after listening to all the sound clips, in all the videos in this set of reviews, that the Epi 59 LP as stock is close enough sound wise to the Gibson and the Epi 59 in the other PU/Bridge configurations, that it isnt worth the time, effort and money to be bothered upgrading it in anyway. The sound differences are there but they are small, and whether one is better than the other is debatable and completely subjective in my opinion. Bottom line is that for £700 you are getting a fantastic looking and sounding Les Paul that's great stock, and IMHO its the best value Epiphone currently in production.

Cool, that is a good wrap up on this fine instrument. I spent all day today playing mine, compared it to my PRS S2 McCarty, and my Epiphone Elite side be side and this 59 sounds great, it has a woody tone and lower gain sound than the two I played it against.
This is a fine guitar to be appreciated and played frequently. The sound quality and tuning stability are outstanding and I can coax all the classic rock sounds I want to hear out of this fine instrument.
I spent the day going over my ZZ Top album collection and playing along while thinking about Dusty Hill and how much he has touched my life and being thankful for the music he helped create.
    RIP Dusty Hill.

personally i couldn't really hear a difference between the burstbuckers and the monty's. and just the slightest difference with the tailpiece. in my opinion the epiphone probably doesnt really need the upgrades. messing about with pickup height and polepieces matching the fretboard radius would probably make a bigger difference. messing about with PU height and polepieces made a world of difference on my guitars.

    • @theguitaristas
      @theguitaristas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thanks man, yes agreed.. in fact we did set the pickup and polepiece heights in part 2 and I also did same for the Monty's after fitting... but this not to say they were in the ideal positions of course, so definitely worth experimenting with these before spending cash. Cheers!

I think it is unnecessary for non-professional players to "throw" money for a Gibson. Because you showed how an 780 euro guitar sounds, nearly Gibson ( I think it sounds like some normal Gibson guitar ). There is no quality gap, just a detail gap. And don't forget with what guitar epiphone is compared to and how much that guitar costs (huuuughe money ratio). Thank you for awesome videos :)

You have put your videos up in a really honest way including bits that others would of edited out to look perfection.

I did the Faber AB1M bridge conversion with the brass posts and thumbwheel as well as the aluminum stop tail and the ACOUSTIC sound was dramatically different!! I still have the stock BB's in it but the difference was so clear and obvious, the pickups sounded 10x better to me. Honestly, I'm happy with my set. 8.2k in the neck and 8.7k in the bridge and I radiused the screws and got the perfect height adjustment. All the caps and pots are well within spec so I didn't feel any need to upgrade there either. Overall, I'm happy with the 59 Epiphone I got and actually think it's a better quality guitar than a lot of Gibson many times the price in terms of QC, fretwork, etc. One thing I'll say about switching to the Faber bridge, is that it's so well engineered, the bridge fits onto the posts very tightly and there's not even a trade of wiggle. Not only is the bridge essentially locked into the posts (turn it upside down and jiggle all you want) but they use tiny c-clips to keep the saddles in the bridge. They don't fall out either. Unfortunately the stop tail does not lock. But the sustain was already impressive with the Epiphone bridge but was even better with the Faber.

I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. I enjoyed your entertainment, honesty, so much, that I just got home a couple hours ago from buying the exact color you presented. I literally did not even plug it in at Guitar Center, I just felt how she resonated, and said I'll take it. I think I checked it out unplugged for maybe 5 minutes. Once I got home, I could not stop playing it, even though it has not been set up yet; That will be tonight's project.

    Good day Colin,
Greetings from Brisbane here is Aus. I found your TH-cam channel because I was looking at buying the Epiphone 59 Les Paul which I have now ordered and am expecting by the end of the month. It has been a few years since I was seriously playing the guitar as after my band went our separate ways I moved on playing less by the day. After finding your videos it reignited my passion for music again. I really enjoy your content, I haven’t enjoyed a channel this much since watching Rob Chapman and Andersons of a few years ago. Keep on making great videos.

Great series. I'm a Strat guy, I just bought #7 a few days ago, a 2016 Fender Road Worn 50's Strat. The RW's are Fender's attempt to get the Custom Shop experience to more players; they've got nitro finishes, Tex Mex pickups, and a small amount of relicing. Even though I just got one I've always wanted one and have a few friends who own them (one has the 50's, one has the new '60's Vintera RW) so I played them often. When I heard about the Epiphone 1959 Les Paul's features I thought it sounded very similar to the Fender Road Worn in spirit. Epi's way of getting the R9 experience into more hands, they have a satin "vintage" finish look, US pickups and remain true to the '59 template.
I bought one about 3 months ago and it's been brilliant. Now that I have a Fender RW the similarities between it & the Epi 59LP are there in spades. Both give vintage feel & appearance with US made professional pups for under a grand. You can't lose with either...

Definitely need a follow up to this spectacular video! A shootout between the stock pickups in the Epi 59 vs the Epi with Custombucker vs the Gibson custom shop Les Paul with Custombucker and the Gibson with Burstbucker from the Epi ! Always great videos! Love to see what if any difference there is. If time is compressed I would love to see Epi with Custombucker vs Gibson with Custombucker. Wonderful video as always! I have loved this series and buying the Epi 59 as a result and leaving the pickups alone. Going with locking tuners and possibly the bridge/tailpiece, but in that order.

I have just purchased one of these guitars even though not looking to buy any guitars, but when i saw all the demos of this I was very impressed and just had to have one. I bought this one from Andertons in Guildford but i had to return it as unable to plug the cable into the output jack, so they replaced it. So now i have got it and its a corker. My only gripe was the finish on the maple top and it bugged me. So took the plunge and buffed it up by hand with the aid of a famous brand scratch remover, and it was a complete success, and the colour popped right out. Happy days.

I was looking for a birth year guitar and quickly found out most if not all (BRANDED) guitars were out of my price range. After many reviews on TH-cam, the algorithm directed me to your channel. Very impressed with your down to earth yet educated observations that lined up with mine. Watched all videos in the series and they convinced me that my GAS instincts were correct, I gotta have this guitar! The turning point was when I missed three out of four listening demo’s were I choose the R8 when actually they were the 59. Only got the last one right but would have expected that tone quality from a $3700 guitar. Rang the bell and cannot wait to watch your other videos! Cheers mate from the newbie from Memphis TN. P.S. I’m leaving now to pick up the cherry burst🎸.

Somewhere along the line while discussing the tuners on this guitar, you asked which tuners we had. A few months ago, as the result of watching this series, I bought my May 2022 Epi '59, from a Russian engineer who was leaving New Zealand. The guitar is so close to new, I consider this one of my best guitar purchases ever. I'm not sure how much of a surprise this is, however the tuners are engraved WILKINSON DELUXE. They hold accurate tuning very well, even after two days in the case.
