Facts! Having the "natural and switch" mindset when you are learning tricks is going to hold you back. This was very prominent when a lot of us started skating back in the 90s and I STILL think of everything this way. Ive become a lot more comfortable doing "switch" tricks but learning some of them I feel like a beginner all over again. Learn everything both ways from the get-go.
when you learn a new trick, its better to learn it on yopur favourite side first and then on your...less favourite or is it better to learn both at once?
The switch/regular point was really interesting. I find this especially relevant for me with topsides - regular soul grinds I prefer to do most of them right footed, but topsides I feel so much more comfortable doing them left footed. It actually makes for some interesting switch-ups and I think you're right that it's psychological and experiential. Put the time in and you can develop that natural feel for 'wrong footed' grinds.
Love the tips mate. The first one resonates so well with me. I used to think "switch" a lot and now I know that my "switch" Mizu is actually stronger than the "regular"
Great tips in this. Knowing when to call it a day is a really important one.. or even just have a break and try some other tricks, so that you can come back to the one you're trying to learn with a fresh mindset. It can make all the difference.
Basic skating! Yes. I’m seeing too many of us older guys trying to get back into it and trying to relearn grinds before getting their skate legs back. Also if you can’t skate, It doesn’t matter what the grind is, it’s going to look like shit
These are all the things I'm retraining my mine around the last couple months. You put what's been going through my head in the driveway perfectly into words. I'm finally moving to switch ups after a couple weeks of saying screw switch. its just is whatever foot I can do it on.
I really liked this episide and how you described all of it, it was also inspiring for me to get that mindset and learn some new tricks again. I'm growing on your channel. Keep it going.
Thanks for the tips very truthful , I started ice skating at 5years old got my first pair of inline Skate at 7 and Started Agressive inline at 30 but the fundamentals of skating were already mastered so yes it makes a big difference and One tip I Would Had when you want a learn a new trick Use protections gear I'm 33 and I don't skate in park Without : Wrist Guard, knee pads and Elbow pad + An helmet all the time and that was the minimum throught the years I had shin guard and gform Short for hips and Butt sometime I even put a motocross chest protector in pool or bowl so I won't break my ribs in worst case scenario, it helps a lot to build your confidence and full commitment when you know that you can fall without having to call it a day I usually used two different pair of wrist guard per summer cause they took the beating 90% of the time
Great break down of the ‘art of learning’ grinds. Your comment about body position is salient, just last night trying to figure out the right frontside balance on the last 5ft of a 30ft coping ledge. Gonna work progressively, doing the curved section, a little into the straight, then combine. Cheers, keep up the great content.
The first tip immediately made me think of Mistrials. A lot of people soul and backslide on the same foot. You need one of each for a Mistrial and you can't do both with the same foot, so one has to be "switch".
Just started skating again last week and did my first (again) grinds last night. Didn’t have the commitment and slid out the first time but I have a mizou and soul 180 out lol. Everyday trying something new or dial something in. I hate that my body doesn’t match my mental capability yet but I’m having a blast🤣❤️
This is a great video! Been thinking about getting back into Rollerblading, as I used to be avid in the sport when I was younger. Also, your Mic is incredible! May need to buy one for my camera! :)
Funny I never thought about normal or switch when I learned tricks I didn't start thinking about what was considered switch to me until I played a game of blade with other skaters. I just figured learn the trick with both feet till its natural either way. I feel like I progress slowly tho with tricks sense im determined to learn them in normal and switch before I move on. Whever I play a game i just say my normal side is whatever side feels the most comfortable to me and switch is the slightly harder side.
Regarding this small adjustments to trick your brain into learning new tricks - this is a good advise. This is exactly how I started learning switch top soul. I am comfortable doing switch soul and from there it's just a small adjustment by basically thinking you are trying to jump on the other side of the obstacle, in terms of locking (if that makes sense).

Thanks for the nice Tutorial! I have to address one thing on your first tip, whereas one should not think of fakie or switch too much. In my class in motion science (I have a master in sports and excercise science) we learned about "cross-learning". Cross-learning something means to learn and improve a movement solely with your right hand, but your left hand will also improve in some extent regardless, wheather you actually ever did that movement with that hand. In short: Your switch improves automatically in some extent, by practicing regular. So in my optinion it was no "mistake" as you put it, but just "cross-learning". You probably couldn't do your tricks switch better, before even learning it to do regular. And I also guess, that you were pretty surprised, when you found out how good and natural it felt to do certain tricks switch. Sorry for beeing a smart-a**.
Thanks. 🙏 And no worries. I didn’t take thisas a smart ass comment. It’s awesome to hear from people who know more about human movement than I do. It’s also nice to know there’s some actual science behind what I was getting at. If skating regular will improve your switch without actually working on it, why not practice both, you know? What you’re saying is definitely what I experienced. Once I started trying things right footed, they came quicker because my brain had already figured out how to do them left footed. Just a matter of mirroring that motion.
I just recently learned to do a frontside. A game changer for me was to think of it as a 90°spin and to turn the same way I usually spin. I kept trying to grind with my right foot in front (dominant foot), but when I do spins i actually spin to the right. So i tried grinding left foot at the front. It took a little bit to get used to mentally, because my brain was telling me to do the opposite, but after that it felt more natural and was easier to commit and lock the grind
I tried to find correlation between boot foot and strong hand. There really is none. But I cant dkate switch for SHIT and I been distinguished since the 90s. But a few of my topside tricks I go topside with the other foot. I appreciate your approach
To grind slide do you need special blades or will regular blades work as well. For instance I own roller blade twister with stock rail mounts or whatever you call um, will that work or do I need special ones like what your blades have
You will want to pick up some dedicated “aggressive” skates if you want to get into grinds. Some grinds can be done on regular skates, but it is far more difficult.
I made a p rail and have just started again after 18 years. It’s way harder and more dangerous than I remember. My h block grinds are way to slippery and my soul grinds just stick. I’m using some ancient Bauer skates and they are a bad design than wedges the soul on the rail...

Not really beyond fully commit. I’m still not consistent with that trick myself, but I find that if I jump higher that I “need” to and make sure I get on top of the ledge rather than next to it, it works out better. Most of the time I just get lazy leg with the soul so I just try to over correct for that and lift it higher than needed.
For the first time in TH-cam, I see and hear what I thought about and what I went through myself applying logic to the development of skating. thank you very much. share your thoughts, I will be happy!
