    Last year our free-range chickens devoured 18 cabbage plants. All that was left were the ribs sticking up like an open hand. This year, new fencing to keep out the banties has helped.

    We are new to our homestead in MO. In AZ I never had luck growing cabbage. I might go ahead and try to plant it for the fall (as in this weekend because time is short on that!) Hope you have a blessed day! 😊💕

      That’s wonderful! Happy growing! Look into shade options. That might help!

    I’m zone 4b MN, and for the FIRST TIME EVER, I had success with earlianna cabbage. It’s an early variety, but it’s name comes from its developer, a man named Earl. My heads were a bit small, not sure if that was me/my garden, or if that’s what it’s supposed to do. It made great sauerkraut and fried/creamed cabbage and did well in corned beef and cabbage.

      I think those early varieties are the ticket for us! Thanks for the recommendation. I will check it out!

    We did golden Acre cabbages this year and got 6-9lb cabbages. They did great. We are in midwestern mn

    A ziplock filled with salty water poked down in the jar works. Just full enough to keep everything under the juice.

    Hey! I'm in Ohio 6a. I plant megaton as well as other early varieties.

    • @mattsara2802
      @mattsara2802  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! I will have to look into them. Other than being early do you choose them for another reason?

    • @sharriebrown4645
      @sharriebrown4645 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mattsara2802 I like them because they grow fairly large. Typically 8-9 lbs. They also store well.

    Love your videos! I am also in 4b. I try cabbage each year and the cabbage worms get them every year. I even covered them this year and they still found them. What is your secret?

    • @emKmn398
      @emKmn398 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bt! It is a bacteria that paralyzes the digestive tract of the caterpillars that feast on your cabbage (and any other worm/caterpillar that plagues your garden). It comes in dry powder or a spray. Saved my cabbage harvest this year.

      I certainly have used things in the past. This year I just planted them close to my chickens but sacrificed a few cabbages in turn. In the past picking them off has honestly been the most effective.
